Every time I try to start Firefox I get"A copy of FF is already open. Only one can be opened at a time" How o I get FF to work?

I can't get Firefox to start up. I've downloaded a new copy several times and keep getting the error message, "A copy of Firefox is already open. Only one copy of Firefox can be open at a time". I do not have Firefox running anywhere.

See [[Firefox is already running but is not responding]], the image shown in that article is the Windows equivalent of the error message that you are receiving, but the information relates to the Mac.

  • When I try to start Firefox, I get a message that it is already running but not responding and I can't run another Firefox at the same time. I uninstalled and reinstalled. No change. Tried various other suggestions. Help!!

When I try to start Firefox, I get a message that it is already running, but not responding and that I should close it before trying to run another Firefox. But I cannot find a way to close Firefox program that is not running as far as I can see. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox, but that did not work. I've tried various other things, but no luck. I thought programs should stop when the computer is turned off, but that didn't work either.

  • When I try to start Firefox, I get a message saying that Firefox is already running and cannot be re-started, so close down and reboot.

Following an upgrade of my OS from XP to Vista, I tried to point the new installation at my old profile. Now when I try to start FF, I get a message saying that it is already running and I should reboot to clear the problem. I've done that but the problem remains. I have uninstalled firefox and reinstalled v4 beta. The problem remains. Any ideas?

OK, I had moved the profile file inside the profile folder which was created when I installed FF, to the main FF folder. I then took the equivalent file which existed under XP before my upgrade to vista, and moved it into the new Profile folder. That's when I hit the problem described in the initial question.
So, what I did following Tony's response was to move the bookmarks password and cookies files into the profile created on the install. I then moved that file into the profile folder and moved the one I'd saved from XP, out to the main FF folder.
Started FF and voila! All working fine. Thanks for your help.

  • When I try to start firefox I get something called ASK

Despite my not asking for, nor as far as I can remember installing it, all of a sudden when Itry to start firefox this ASK browser comes up. I have tried to uninstall it and my O/S said it had but this keeps happening and I can find no trace of this annoying thing anywhere in my system to delete it otherwise. How can I get rid of it.

Ask search and the Ask Toolbar are installed along with some software. You should have seen an option during the installation to NOT install the Ask software; look carefully at each screen during the install process for items that you do not want and un-check those items.

  • Firefox 4 on Mac goes through periods of time where it brings "server not found" or "problem loading page" pages. I have to re-start firefox to get it to work again. Works fine on Safari.

Hi, ever since I was prompted to download the new Firefox 4, I have continuously been having this issue. I will type in a domain name and it will automatically prompt me to "server not found". The websites work fine on Safari and Google Chrome, but not firefox. I have uninstalled and reinstalled firefox about 4 times and I really need a solution!
Also, I have done all of the IPv4, Cache, and other solutions listed in the article on having certain sites not load. I'd appreciate some help! Thanks!

Did you ever fix this, because I am having the same problem

  • New laptop Win7; when I try to start Firefox, I get error mess, "Firefox already running", I uninstalled and reinstalled with same results.

This started after I did a windows easy transfer of some Quickbook files from my old computer to my laptop. I have uninstalled firefox and downloaded the latest version from the website and still get this message. I cannot see where it can be running. Thnx, Bill.

This sounds like it's not the Firefox installation itself that is messed up, but your profile folder (where your personal settings like bookmarks, passwords, etc are stored). You say you used easy transfer, and that might have gone wrong somehow.
To start from scratch again, follow the instructions under "Creating a new profile" here: https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Managing-profiles. Hope this helps!

Whatever this is makes the loading of Firefox very very long and then won't let me go to Google.. I have to go to bookmarks and find a Google one and go that that and then proceed to use Google. I have tried but can't seem to get rid of it. I really need help, this is driving me nuts.

When I start firefox, the previous tabs are there but blank and say new tab, can I restore the tabs?
    how can I do this?

I'm not sure what causes this.
As the first step, I recommend backing up your existing sessionstore files.
Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using
Help > Troubleshooting Information > "Show Folder" button
Scroll down to the files whose names start with sessionstore. You should find at least sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak. If the .js extension does not appear on sessionstore, you should turn off the Windows feature that hides file extensions from you, so that you can work with file names as accurately as possible. This Microsoft support article has the steps: [http://support.microsoft.com/kb/865219].
Make backup copies of all the sessionstore files to somewhere like your Documents folder for possible later restoration.
Next, try one of the data mining techniques in these posts to rescue the URLs from the sessionstore.js or sessionstore.bak file:
    * Using Firefox's Browser Console (formerly known as Error Console): https://support.mozilla.org/questions/969046#answer-471950
    * Using Firefox developer tool "Scratchpad": http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=622036&start=60&p=12098147#p12098147

Every time I TRY to start firefox 18-19 I get an error message : "Firefox has stopped working" - "close the program and check online for a solution" - or - "close the program" this happens TWICE every time I try to start firefox. Eventually after a random number of tries firefox will start normaly. I am useing firefox 19.0.2 now bit I belive it started when I upgraded to firefox 18 but am not sure, it might have been when I upgraded to firefox 19 ... but it has been happening for a very long time and I cannot find any helpfule solutions online.
I have tried a Clean reinstall but it did not help.

    Hello,
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
    * You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''
''When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.''
    Thank you.

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
Please report back to see if this helped you!
