Examples of Suspected Fraud or Fake Emails

Hey Everybody!
In an effort to make things easier to find and research, I'm going to consolidate as many threads as possible where we have examples of people trying to defraud hard working sellers (Craigslist emails, 'PayPal' emails asking you to send money outside of PayPal, etc).  This will also be used as a master thread for future posts regarding this same situation.
When you post your examples here, please remember to not include last names or contact information of whoever is sending these emails.  There's no way to confirm if that person has been defrauded as well and the name is being used fraudulently.
Thanks for your cooperation and remember, keep the conversation productive, on task, and above all, keep it clean. I know these things can be difficult and frustrating, but bleep filled posts or posts that look like government redacted files will never benefit anyone.

  • Suspected Fraud - Need Help

Greetings Recently I tried to sell my guitar online and put on a free ad in a national website. A potential buyer contacted me und showed interest. What caught my attention at first, was the fact that she was neither well versed in my langauge (which is german) nor in english. We talked a bit about the product. She was easily convinced that my guitar was in a good state and mentioned that it would have to be transported to a different country. She asked me to send her my paypal email adress. I agreed and proceeded to do so. I thought now we could talk business and discuss the details of the transaction. Today I got a few emails. One from her and two from paypal. She initiated a few transactions apparently. For once, one paypal email tries to convince me that she tranfered more money to my paypal account than what we initially talked about. The surplus of money is, at least according to her, there to take care of the transport fee. I am now supposed to pay the transport, with my own money. And only until I have paid, then and only then will I receive my money. Problem: The emails look fake und the transaction seems to entail rather unusual conditions. For once: The paypal emails are riddled with grammar mistakes. It is abundantly obvious that the writer of the email has little experience with the german langauge. Not a single sentence displays coherence. The other major problem: I visited my paypal account on paypal.com and not the slightest semblance of a transaction was noted. Apparently I never received any payment whatsoever, despite her making the claim. Apparently she send me 850 bucks under the condition that I invest 550 bucks in the transport fee. Until then, so the email says, I will have no access to the money. But we only just discussed the price of my product (300 bucks) and never talked about the logistics. For obvious reasons I am suspicious. I am an absolute newbie to online transactions and to paypal, so I need your help. Am I being set up? Should my paypal account note any such transaction? Does the abundance of grammar mistakes in the paypal e-mails imply that ithey are certainly fake? What about the condition, that I have to pay 550 bucks, such that I receive my share of the deal? To the latter point, that is more money then she wants to pay for the product. That alone is strange. Why do you import a cheap guitar, when the transport costs more then the product.  This all looks like fraud and quite frankly I do not know what to do.  Thanks for all the help Edit: I just read a few posts in the Thread 'Examples of suspected Fraud or fake emails' and I read about a case earily similar to mine. I am convinced now that this is a set up. In this case, should I just ignore any e-mails from the person who is trying to rip me off? Should I talk to my lawyer? Should I delete/ deactivate my paypal accont as to ensure, that no transactions are forced upon me, so to speak?

New to PayPal even though I have had it for a while (but havent used in years) but I wanted to know if there was a specific page how a sale is to be conducted and what are flags to be wary of. My current situation: I was contacted by an individual that referred to someone that he knew that was interested in the ad. Contacted him through email and then several days later he confirmed to me that he wants to purchase the motorcycle. So of course, we exchange questions and answers.  He says that he added on $#### to cover transport and MG cost and says this specifically "$$$ will need to be sent to the hauler agent via MG money transfer and the remaining $$ to cover the MG charges. PayPal said they wont release the money into your account until you get back to them with the money gram transfer details with receipt of the transfer and this is done by PayPal to protect both parties". IS THIS ACTUALLY HOW IT WORKS?!?!? I got several email from "Notification from PayPal" but the email address is fundsservicecenter at californiamail.com, not from PayPal!!!  Also got an Email that says:"***MONEY GUARANTEED**TRANSFER FUNDS IMMEDIATELY***" that goes on to say "Send your $### through MoneyGram Money Transfer before we can release the money into your account and this is due to the large increase in the rate of the online scams recorded last year. We will only credit your account as soon as the money has been sent to the bearer and the MoneyGram receipt is been emailed to us for confirmation". I havent received any Email from PayPal saying that I have received payment or that there is a pending transaction in my history! This is killing me because I want to say this is not legit, but I dont know if this an actual process that is used for new sellers on PayPal. I need some help community! And I need some guidance in this! This is on going and would be much appreciated if I could get some quick feedback!  Don't do it, it's a scam.  Sell vehicles by cash and carry only. There should be no exceptions to this.  No PayPal.  Cash is king!

  • Phishing/Fraud/Fake emails

Once again I'm being bombarded with fake emails supposedly from BT. All of this lot are headed "We need to confirm your BT account information."
I know enough about the problem to be able to spot the fakes - there have been dozens of threads on the topic - but what all these have in common is that they are using my email address as the sender.
If ever I need to send myself an email eg to test something I always use a different "From" address so is there NO way that BT can stop these i.e. by stopping those where the To and From email addresses are the same? Surely that possible in practice?
    Is cost the only barrier?

Not a good idea I'm afraid. A lot of people, myself included, Bcc a copy of sent mails to themselves for various reasons. I do it because I have all my devices set up for POP3 but I like to keep a copy of sent mails on my home PC. By sending myself a copy when I email someone  using my phone  means I can keep all my sent mails in one place.

HHow do I change the email to my apple id when I don't remember security questions and its a fake email?

Which email address are you trying to change ?
You won't be able to change the rescue email address until you can answer your security questions, if you can't remember your answers and gave a fake email address for it then you will have to contact Support in your country to get the questions reset.
Contacting Apple about account security : Contact Apple for help with Apple ID account security
If your country isn't on that page then try this form to contact Support : https://www.apple.com/emea/support/itunes/contact.html
When they've been reset you can then change your rescue email address for potential future use : Manage your Apple ID primary, rescue, alternate, and notification email addresses
Or if it's available in your country you could change to 2-step verification : Frequently asked questions about two-step verification for Apple ID
If it's the primary email address that you are trying to change : Change your Apple ID - Apple Support

What's the name of the file you are attempting to open?  Is it "ScreenFlow_4.5.2.dmg"?  If it is the correct name then the message is correct and you are attempting to open a file with DMG files extension and not one with a PDF file extension.  Adobe Reader opens PDF files an not any other file type.

  • Using Maverick, error message: Adobe Reader could not open '***.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).

Receiving error message using current Maverick version: "Adobe Reader could not open '***.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).".  Is fix the same as on previous OS versions?

Back up all data before making any changes. Please take each of the following steps until the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
If Adobe Reader or Acrobat is installed, and the problem is just that you can't print or save PDF's displayed in Safari, you may be able to do so by moving the cursor to the the bottom edge of the page, somewhere near the middle. A black toolbar should appear under the cursor. Click the printer or disk icon.
    Step 2
There should be a setting in its preferences of the Adobe application such as Display PDF in Browser. I don't use those applications myself, so I can't be more precise. Deselect that setting, if it's selected.
    Step 3
If you get a message such as ""Adobe Reader blocked for this website," then from the Safari menu bar, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
    and check the box marked
    Allow Plug-ins
    Then click
    Manage Website Settings...
and make any required changes to the security settings for the Adobe PDF plugin.
    Step 4
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return.
From the folder that opens, move to the Trash any items that have "Adobe" or “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari.
    Step 5
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it, if it's present. The same goes for a plugin called "iGetter," and perhaps others—I don't have a complete list. Don't remove Silverlight if you use the "Netflix" video-streaming service.
    Step 6
Do as in Step 4 with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari.
