Exasperated

Well after being exasperated so much I finally left BT and went to another provider for an upgrade to FTTC broadband and telephone services.
A final straw was the BT Usage system charging me extra for data that clearly I didn't use. In the last month of being connected I got charged £25 for a huge amount of data that really I couldn't possibly have used.
Now here's the amusing part which might be of interest to others in the same situation.
My BT broadband ADSL connection was removed on 16th June. My line was connected to VDSL FTTC on the same date. This required an Openreach man actually swapping the line over physically.
Yesterday I received an email from BT telling me that I have exceeded my usage for July!!!  So I have no router, no line, no BT broadband since 16th June but according to BT from 1st - 31st July I  have used more than 10Gbyte of data on my old ADSL connection which is not even connected to the  DSLAM..  If you ever wanted incontrovertable proof that BT usage statistics are grossly in error then here it is.
I have no idea how to get my £25 back for  the previous month since BT just say their systems are accurate. Well I'm sorry, but I've worked in IT and telecommunications for 30 years. I was responsible for a comms network connecting hundreds of offices across 40 countries. I monitored my own usage on two routers (I added another one in line just to get a second check)  and it was well well within my allowance. Then there are the many other occasions in the last 12 months where I've been charge £5 for going over when I shouldn't. At least I have some evidence to back up my assertions, unlike BT. I can tell you exactly what data came from where. Can BT ?
I really feel like taking this to court but heck, is that really viable ?
This issue was the primary reason for me moving provider but there were others.  I've worked with BT professionally for years and been a home customer for years. I'm afraid they're just not capable of sensible rational communication - even within the organisation you can sense the frustration between the myriads of departments and groups.

Bernie

  • Disgust and Exasperation with BT "Customer Service...

I am posting this here as really a final attempt to see if anything helpful will actually be done by BT, but I think also as more of a warning to others, as I truly have ben a “victim” of their so called customer service.
To make clear, I don’t really use my landline, the only reason that I even have a landline is for my broadband which I get from another supplier, as I need this for work, it is rather essential, so when there is a problem with the line it causes me great stress as it threatens my ability to work and make money and pay bills etc. Generally the only time I use the phone is if I have to call a free phone number or a number which is chargeable from a mobile.
Over a year ago now, back in July 2011, I had just finished dealing with someone from BT’s head office as I had been forced to go there due to surprise surprise BT not adequately dealing with a complaint, that time due to charges on my bill for calls I hadn’t made. The man I was speaking to, fixed all the problem, re-set up my quarterly direct debits and said if there were ever any issues again to come straight back to him.
Cut to the end of August this year. I happened to pick up the phone to try and call a free phone number when I discovered that the phone could not make outgoing calls. At this point I have had NO communication with BT of ANY kind, calls, emails, texts or letters. Since dealing with their head office the previous year. When I eventually get through to someone, Im informed that the line has been restricted due to non payment of the bill. I asked if there has been a problem with the most recent payment or has a payment bounced and I am informed that in fact BT haven’t taken a payment in a year!!!!! I ask how this is possible, and also how has no one from BT got in contact with me about it, I mean they are supposed to be a Communications company, yet they seem to be severely lacking in communication, as the only reason I knew there was a problem was that I happened to pick up my phone. After speaking to around 3 different people in one of BT’s non English as a first language speaking call centres, various promises of a  callback which funnily enough never happened, and god knows how much cost on my mobile phone bill, I finally managed to speak to a manager to try and figure out what had happened and how we could get this fixed.
I was told by the Manager that they honestly had no idea how firstly they weren’t taking direct debit payments, and secondly how this could have been allowed to run for a year without BT really contacting me about it or even taking any action like restricting the line after the first time they didn’t take a direct debit. I was informed that the balance of the account was over £400. I made the point and the manager agreed that asking a customer to make that kind of payment in one go with no warning, particularly in these circumstances was unacceptable and a solution had to be reached. I said I was happy to pay it off in installments or work something out that way, and the manager also said they would need to check as perhaps some of the bill may have even been supposed to be covered as compensation for part of the previous complaint and due to an oversight may have caused the rest of the year to go untouched, as otherwise she wasn’t really sure how this could have occurred. The Manger then told me that she was going to go away and thoroughly investigate this and speak to the person who had originally set up my direct debit to see if there was any issue there. She told me that she would be looking into this and would then come back to me with the answers to how this happened and also a solution to paying it off. Also while she was looking into this she would restore my line fully, as this was obviously a larger problem at BT’s end. This seemed to be a fair agreement and I told her I looked forward to hearing back from them when they had it sorted out and we could get this cleared up. How foolish I was.
Cut to the end of last month, I had family members in New York and New Jersey on holiday at the time of the hurricane hitting there. One night I picked up the phone to try and get in touch with them to make sure they were okay and I discovered that once again my line had been restricted for outgoing calls. To be clear here, the last time I had any contact with BT was when speaking to the manager at the end of August as described above. As you can imagine, having my line suddenly restricted and considering the circumstances I was particularly angry. I called in the next day, and despite asking what was going on and what had happened to the investigation into my account, instead all I got was a wall of “The account has been restricted due to non payment”. I would respond, yes I get that, but BT were supposed to be resolving the matter and coming back to me with a way to pay off the balance. Again the only response I would be given was “The account has been restricted due to non payment”. No other information, just that statement. I asked to speak to a  manager and was promised a callback from one. It never materialized. I called back in gain, asking for someone to call me about this as I wanted to get it resolved, was promised one but again never received one.
Then last Monday, the  12th of November, I finally called in AGAIN at my expense, and spoke to someone who actually seemed to understand the term “Customer Service”. She took the time to look at the notes, saw that I was supposed to have been called about this but that no one had, and that in fact no one had even bothered to look into my account or even do anything with it. In fact I believe I was told that no one had even accessed my account since the last time I spoke with BT, back in August. I asked her if it should really be this hard for me to set up some sort of payment plan, I mean Im asking a company to let me give them money but they don’t seem to be interested. She apologized and said that she was going to personally pass this to her manager, that she would fully investigate the matter, sort it out and come back to me with the solution so we could resolve the matter and put it to bed. She gave me her word that her manager would be calling me within 48 hours. And guess what? That’s right, I never received any call whatsoever.
So Wednesday this week, 2 days ago, I call back into BT, to ask why this manager hasn’t called me back as promised and what exactly is going on. At this point I get more of the stonewall “The account has been restricted due to non payment”. However also at this point get told that my line is going to be terminated fully this coming Saturday. Again I will point out that no one from BT had communicated this to me in any way, no warning, no letter, text, email or call, from this global telecommunications company. However I am then informed that someone had called and spoke to me the previous Saturday, had given me this information and I had “agreed” with it. I informed the agent that this hadn’t happened, no one from BT had spoke to me on Saturday, and certainly not at the time of 11:30am as it was noted on my account, as I had been out the previous night and had only got in at 8am Saturday morning and went straight to sleep. This didn’t seem to bother them or they just didn’t care as now all that I could get from anyone was “The account has been restricted due to non payment and we are cancelling it on Saturday”. No offer of sorting out to get it paid, no explanation as to what had gone on or why no one had done anything, just  a set response that felt like I was talking to a computer with only one programmed response. I was also informed that my account had now been ring-fenced by a particular department and only they would deal with it and they had no interest in my complaints or issues, they only cared about the bill in full and if not paid then it would be cut of Friday. I pointed out that I had not been given any notification of their action of any kind. The response verbatim I was given was,
“We don’t have to inform you if we are going to restrict or cancel your account, we can just do it”
Also they didn’t seem to care about the fact that someone in their company had blatantly lied and put information on my account saying they had spoke to me about this to inform me of it and I had agreed with it!!!!!! So fraudulent activity by BT and they don’t even seem to care. I asked for the details of the person who had left this note as I wished to complain, but was simply brushed a way with
“Oh we wont give that to you, we will just take care of it internally, you don’t need to worry about it”
I don’t need to worry about false information being put on my account???? I think BT doesn’t really have an understanding of what concerns the average customer, as someone falsifying information on their account is kind of a HUGE deal. At this point I had tried several times by phone and email to contact the person who had dealt with my account last year and had set up the supposed direct debit but surprise surprise, they never responded to one of my attempts, not even a polite message to say they had received it or that someone else might be dealing with it, nothing, not a peep.
At the end of the day with my head ready to explode I finally managed to get a number for a manager in BT’s head office. I called their office line and got to speak to them. I explained the above and they were very sympathetic and apologized, and agreed that the way it had been handled was wrong, and asking someone to pay £400+ without any notification and also when they had previously told me they would be sorting out a payment plan was unacceptable. He then told me he would be passing my information to an executive level complaints operative and that they would call me back the very next day to discuss the problem and get it resolved. Again I pointed out that I didn’t think it would be this much hassle for a person who is trying to set up payments to get it sorted. I then left this call, feeling a lot better as it seemed I was finally going to get this sorted.
However, the next day not only did I not receive a call, but instead I got an email from the person who the matter had been passed to, which simply said, ‘We haven’t had a payment in a year, the direct debits haven’t been taken, we have now sent you duplicate bills so you have a copy of them and you have been informed that the account will cease on Saturday (conveniently leaving out the fact that I was only informed of this the day previously). That was it. I called and left 2 voicemails and responded by email saying that could she please call me as her email has not in any way dealt with any of my issues or even tried to resolve this, and being as one of my biggest issues was that for 3 months I have been constantly calling BT and not one person has been bothered to call me, and the response to my speaking tp a manager at BT’s head office was for her to send me an email that as far as she was concerned I might not even get due to current restrictions on the line. I never received any call from her that day.
That evening I managed to get back in touch with the person from the head office I had spoken to the previous day. I expressed my exasperation that with a major issue where one of the main problems is BT’s seeming inability to call me back when promised, the person who as supposed to be looking into this hadn’t even bothered to call me to find out the issues and what the complaint details were!!!!! I was again promised that he would get her to call me first thing Friday. She did, I spoke with her about an hour ago, and from the fact that I have felt compelled to write this should tell you exactly how helpful she was.
When I answered the phone, the first thing she said to me was, “The only reason for this call is merely a courtesy, it doesn’t matter what you say or what has happened it will not effect the decision to terminate your line tomorrow” If that doesn’t just sum up the entire BT experience for the average customer Im not sure what could. Not only that but she claimed that BT had tried to contact me numerous times in regards to this yet mysteriously could not provide me with a single precise date of any of these supposed communications. I was called a “liar” as she said that I must have noticed that the quarterly direct debits hadn’t come out. This is despite the fact that the entire point of a direct debit is that you don’t have to check it, it just pays it, its how I pay my rent, gas, electricity, broadband, mobile phone and I assumed my phone line. Also if there has ever been an issue, the company involved is usually very quick and good about getting in touch, as its money you owe them/ Not BT though it seems. I said that all I’ve been wanting to do for the last 3 months is get something set up to pay this off. However I’m told that they wont do that that they NEVER allow payment plans (a blatant lie)and that even though I’ve only had 2 days notice and even then nothing in writing, they don’t have to inform me anyway, they can just do what they want.
I tried to point out the effect this would have, I even made it clear that I was perfectly happy that while I was making payments to clear the debt that they could keep the line restricted, but at least still active as otherwise I cant work, I cant make money, I cant pay my rent, I lose my flat, I cant afford to buy food and in essence it royally messes up my life. The response was that they didn’t care and unless the full amount is paid then tough.
However the most disgusting, Blatant and downright underhanded moment (and bear in mind at this point Ive been openly called a liar) came, when I brought up the fact that there is false information on my account, that someone had lied and put fraudulent information on my account. Her response, and I still have trouble accepting this was
“Well I don’t think one of our agents would do that, so Im not even going to look into it”.
Despite the fact that she could confirm that there was no call in under 5 minutes she refused to check it. I asked her to go get the call recording as there wouldn’t be one, and if she wasn’t going to help with my account at least please fix this, someone in BT has put false info on my account and you can check this yourself, it will take you no time, just confirm it. She however again refused to even look into it as she didn’t “THINK” that someone would do that. She also refused to go and listen to or check the calls I had back in August with the manager who had promised to sort out a payment plan and investigate, she refused to check or listen to the call from last Monday where an agent had confirmed that the previous manager was supposed to have done this but hadn’t done anything with it. She refused to do anything in any way that might mean she would have to change the position she had come on the phone to me with and had made clear she didn’t want to change. So in essence this person who is supposed to be trained in customer service and conplaint resolution, didn’t even bother her backside to speak to the customer making a complaint to find out the issues, just decided to check a  few notes, not pay any real attention and sho a complete lack of respect to me. I mean she openly accused me of being a liar on the call and in the same breath refused to go and check if one of BT’s agents had lied themselves about calling me and me “agreeing” to all this. Funny, I was sure one of BT’s slogans was “Its good to talk”
So here I am, Im told my account will be terminated tomorrow and it seems that no one at BT cares, or even wants to solve the problem. Also they don’t care that this is going to have a massive effect on me and my life, without my internet access I cant work, and if I cant do that then I lose my livelihood, my home, the food on my plate and everything I have. Oh and look, just in time for Christmas. I have been asking for 3 months to get this paid off in a sensible way and for 3 months I have been assured they would take care of it, then fobbed off nad forgotten about. And now BT have made it abundantly clear that they really have no interest or concern for their customers in any way.
I write this in the vain hope that someone might be able to help me here, however being as there is less than 12 hours till Saturday I doubt it.  I think to be honest its more so that other people are aware of just how shockingly bad BT’s service really is, and that watch yourselves and not only will they lie, abuse, insult and cause you great trauma, but that they will also refuse to accept any responsibility for their words, their action, their promises, and especially their mistakes and faults, as as far as they are concerned they don’t make any, and wont even look into seeing if they have. Truly a company that doesn’t care

Its quarterly billing, and on direct debit, so the whole point there is it takes care of itself.
It aso didnt hurt that as I said, I had no communication from BT in that year, no calls, emails, texts, letters nothing. They sent me no letter to say that there had been a missed payment, they took no action due to this, still something at this point that no one has been able to explain how that happened. Also the direct debit was set up by someon from their executive level complaints deaprtment, so you would think it would work ok. But apparantly 3 months later they didnt take a payment, and kept not taking payments or getting in touch with me about it, they just did notning. Then after a year, again without any warning or notification restricted my line, which as it turnds out was an automatic process, no one had any clue about what had been going on. Hence why the first manager I spoke to about it said she was going to have to investigate how this happened and obviously work out a repaymnt package. Though as par for the course from that point on I never received a callback from BT at any point, I called them often enough, but they never could be bothered it seemed to get back in touch.
Also my bills arent exaclty large, as I say the only reason I even have a landline is for my internet access for work so its not as if its a huge amount and its every 3 months so not something really on your radar. Again thats the point of DD and what you assume is a professional and capapble company.

  • Copy and paste text from Word for Mac to Mail exasperating!

I'm so exasperated!! I would be grateful for some help.  I have a carefully worded template letter in Word for Mac.  I copied and pasted it into Mail and loads of extra lines are put in that I cannot delete! So I painstakingly copy and paste each line.  I still have to faff about deleting extra lines that magically appear, then press shift+enter to go to next line without having a line space.  It has messed up font size as well.  Surely it should be straightforward to copy and paste simple text from one program to another!  Is there something I should know or do I just have to type everything out afresh each time - ridiculous in this so called easy technology that saves work ha ha.

  • "grayed out" info /can't change tracks (win 7) - exasperated - please help?

I moved my library to a larger external drive and now for 80% or more of my music, I can't change any details or info, genres, etc. I've done a lot of research already but still can't overcome this problem. I'm on Windows 7.
My latest move was to reformat the external my library was on to FAT32 (which has no security interference) because I couldn't get anything done with "allow" user settings when on NTFS. I thought surely I had a security rights problem going on -- but now I'm truly exasperated. Why is iTunes locking me out of my own music?
Anyway--if anyone has any suggestions I can try I'd be eternally grateful.

It sounds as though Windows is not allowing you access to those files. This can be for two reasons:
They are read only, which doesn't seem likley but is worth checking.
The other is your account does not have write access to the folders containing the files. This is likely to happen when folders wre created on another PC or in another account.
Go to the music folder and select Properties>>security tab. You may need to take ownership of the folder and give yourself full control.

  • Exasperation with BT

We write this message in a calm and measured way but in total exasperation with BT; if our experience is a reflection of the level of service it provides then it is an embarrassment to have the name 'British' in its title.
As satisfied customers of Sky we found ourselves in the situation of moving home locally and wanting to retain our telephone number.   Sky could not facilitate us in keeping our number and as a result we turned to BT.
On 26 October 2012 we telephoned BT advised them of our requirements and were reassured that if we moved to BT we would be able to retain our existing telephone number.  Later that day, 21.50 to be precise, we received an e-mail from BT confirming the request and giving us a start date of 12 November.
On the day of moving, 9 November, we contacted BT to check on progress only to be told they had no record whatsoever of our conversation on 26 October (despite us quoting an order number).  From this point on BT caused no end of unnecessary stress in terms of the level of service.  On 9 November we had to put in (what was to us) a second request but the first request recorded by BT.
We were advised there would be no problem and were given a start date for commencement of our service with BT.  Not only did this start date fail but two further dates failed also.  In total it has taken from 26 October to 11 December to transfer our service.  This necessitated numerous telephone calls to BT; each employee we spoke to did not seem to grasp how ridiculous the situation had become.
Not only have we spent an inordinate amount of time contacting BT; having dates for the transfer of service which they miserably failed on, at one point we were speaking to BT and advised them that our land line was unobtainable only to be told by BT that they had given us a new telephone number - notwithstanding the fact that BT had not advised us of this number!
All along the process BT promised compensation.  Well we learned today how much compensation they were prepared to offer us for all our problems - an unbelievable £10.  In all of this time we have never received a letter of apology from anyone within BT's management, this despite us sending a letter by recorded delivery to them towards the end of our probems.
If this is the level of service a company with the brand name British Telecom then we feel ashamed to be a part of this country where the customer comes at the very bottom of a pile and profits are its top priority.

  • HT5167 But does it fix the exasperating problems with spotlight?

Does Lion up-date 10.7.4 address the exasperating problems with spotlight and the finder?

What "exasperating problems", we are not clairvoyant, yet.

  • HT203175 The latest version of iTunes freezes my computer whenever I try to open it. Needless to say, this is infuriating. I have Windows XP, which should support the latest version. I am particularly exasperated, because iTunes compelled me to download.

iTunes compelled me to download the latest version, before I could complete a transaction (which, needless to say, was botched). I have Windows XP, and I cannot open iTunes now without freezing or crashing my computer. This is utterly frustrating, since I can't even play any holiday music, much less update my iPod.
Can I uninstall, and reinstall the older version? I do not need all the bells and whistles, and I detest the new format (even if it were to run on my computer)?
I'd love to be able to access my Xmas playlist someday.

What didn't work?  Removing everything or just the older version of Bonjour?  Did you follow the instructions in the link I provided above to walk you through the process?
Perhaps it would be a better idea to post this in the iTunes forums, since it is an issue with iTunes and your iPod Shuffle.

  • Exasperated after 3 days

How do you get tunes from  itunes to my iphone - and don't talk technically.I have been thru every apple help line- and there is no where that it is spelt out in simple terms
On itunes it says it is sync-ed and is safe to disconnect
But where is there a word /prompt/instruction that says"download to iphone??!!

With your phone connected and iTunes open, click the Music tab.
Check the songs in your library you want to sync to your iPhone
Press the Sync/Apply button and wait until the sync is complete
    Disconnect your iPhone
The songs are then accessed/played using the iPod app on your iPhone.
Do you have an Apple store near you?  If so, sign up for one of their classes.

  • How can I get rid of an exasperating Wikipedia balloon which pops up with a dictionary definition of a random word it chooses? Thanks!

I'm not sure whether or not the cursor activates this problem as it happens to pass over a word that wikipedia is programed to respond to w/ this definition balloon--it happens too fast for me to back track and figure out what i might have done that triggers its appearance. Seems random. No X to close balloon. Sometimes clicking cursor outside the balloon shuts if off...sometimes i can't get rid of it.Random occurrences of balloon but enough to be annoying.NOTE! Just now in hilighting "trouble shooting info" from Help menu, a balloon appeared w/ 4 icons:google, search Wikipedia, search duckduckgo and search surf canyon. This balloon appeared when the cursor went over the hi lighted text...it's like the Wikipedia dictionary definitions balloon i get when i'm reading online text! Connected?

Hello, I had this problem also. In Firefox 7.0.1, go to Options -> General -> Add-ons Manager -> Options -> Fastestfox Options and Uncheck "Show popup bubble" Worked for me and got rid of those annoying bubble.
I don't know if it will work in v 3.16.x
    Good luck

  • Exasperated trying to do a pay pal button, plz help!

I am trying to add a buy button to an image on my website.  Pay pal gave me the code.  But where do I put it?
The image is a rollover image but at this point I'll settle for just getting it up there.  I do want the custom image, not the pay pal logo, which will disturb the site design.
Also, I tried going the route of adding a dreamweaver extension, but could not find "api" information on the paypal site.
    thx in advance.

    Hi  all -
Sorry, I got called away to another task and this is my first chance to get back.  Desperately need to get this page up.
Here's the code to the page.  Here's the line to search for that refers to the image I want to link to a pay pal page:
    <img src="images/cx_paypal_u_NEWEST.jpg" alt="Order with Pay Pal" name="paypal" width="235" height="80" border="0">
Just for a test, when I replaced the button text with the pay pal code, a drop-down box appeared with the test amounts I had set up.
I only want the button to link to the page.  And honestly, I really don't even want drop-down options, just a field where a customer can enter an amount with their credit card.
I'm sort of old school when it comes to privacy and like maintaining my anonymity in the forums. I'd be happy to send a link but could I do it by email?
    Help.
    Thanks.

  • 10gR2 Install Exasperation

From the 10gR2 DB Admin Guide, Chapt 8 - Managing Tablespaces:
"Bigfile tablespaces are supported only for locally managed tablespaces with automatic segment space management, with three exceptions: locally managed undo tablespaces, temporary tablespaces, and the SYSTEM tablespace."
From the 10gR2 SQL Reference - CREATE TABLESPACE:
"Restrictions on Automatic Segment-space Management - This clause is subject to the following restrictions:
    * You can specify this clause only for a permanent, locally managed tablespace.
    * You cannot specify this clause for the SYSTEM tablespace."
These two citations from the Oracle docs suggest that it should be impossible to create a BIGFILE TEMP tablespace, a BIGFILE UNDO tablespace, and especially a BIGFILE SYSTEM tablespace (since its datafile can not have AUTOMATIC SEGMENT SPACE MANAGEMENT).
    Here is my situation –-
I used the Database Creation Assistant (DBCA) in the Oracle Universal Installer (OUI 10.2) to set up a 10gR2 Enterprise Edition custom database. I installed the software, and then I got to the DBCA portion of the install process. It presented the screen that allowed me to change the specifications for the tablespaces to be created in the new database. I was surprised to find that it allowed me to check the BIGFILE checkboxes for the SYSTEM, TEMP, and UNDO tablespaces. I checked them to see what would happen. You would think that I would have gotten an error because of the restrictions placed on BIGFILE tablespaces in the docs. Nope. The DBCA completed without error and my database was created.
Now when I bring up the Oracle Enterprise manager and go to the tablespace maintenance screen, it identifies The SYSTEM, TEMP, and UNDO tablespaces as BIGFILE tablespaces. When I generate the DDL for the tablespace, this is what I find:
    SYSTEM tablespace --
CREATE BIGFILE TABLESPACE "SYSTEM" DATAFILE 'H:\ISS\SYSTEM01.DBF' SIZE 440384K REUSE AUTOEXTEND ON NEXT 1024K MAXSIZE 33546240M LOGGING EXTENT MANAGEMENT LOCAL SEGMENT SPACE MANAGEMENT MANUAL
    TEMP tablespace --
CREATE BIGFILE TEMPORARY TABLESPACE "TEMP" TEMPFILE 'H:\ISS\TEMP01.DBF' SIZE 20544K REUSE AUTOEXTEND ON NEXT 640K MAXSIZE 33546240M EXTENT MANAGEMENT LOCAL UNIFORM SIZE 1024K
ALTER DATABASE DEFAULT TEMPORARY TABLESPACE "TEMP"
    UNDO tablepsace --
CREATE BIGFILE UNDO TABLESPACE "UNDOTBS1" DATAFILE 'H:\ISS\UNDOTBS01.DBF' SIZE 286784K REUSE AUTOEXTEND ON NEXT 5120K MAXSIZE 33546240M
In my next post (Part Two) I will describe my dilemma that relates to this topic.
    Part Two follows:
Note that for all three tablespaces the DDL above says that the underlying datafiles are of type BIGFILE. On top of that, the SYSTEM tablespace was created as type BIGFILE even though it has MANUAL SEGMENT SPACE MANAGEMENT. All this contradicts the documentation in the DB Admin Guide.
I can successfully use the OEM to modify the size of the TEMP and UNDO tablespaces, but when I try to use the OEM to modify the size of the SYSTEM tablespace datafile, I get this error:
    "Validation Error
    Please correct the following error:
bigfiletbs - Bigfile tablespace is supported only for locally managed tablespaces with automatic segment space management as well as undo and temporary tablespaces"
But this error message says that the UNDO and TEMP tablespaces can be of type BIGFILE, which contradicts the quotation from the DB Admin Guide that I reproduced above.
So it seems that the Database Creation Assistant that is run from the Oracle Universal Installer(10.2) will allow you to configure your system tablespace as type BIGFILE and will not generate any errors when it creates your database. But when you try to perform some kind of alteration to the system datafile, only then will you get an error. And the error message will contradict what is stated in the documentation!
Since I cannot change the segment space management of a datafile after it has been created, I am stuck with a SYTEM tablespace that is of an unknown status.
    But that's not all ....
When trying to a 10gR2 Enterprise custom installation, I chose only the Partitioning Option, leaving out the other options for which I have no license. I also leave out the Oracle Programmer option. I confirm my selections when the DBCA lists all the options selected. But when the install completes, a query of the v$option view shows that I have OLAP and Spatial installed. When I bring up the OUI to see the installed products, it also lists Oracle Programmer as being installed.
This is getting me really ticked off. I need to get on with setting up Oracle databases for projects that are pending, but Oracle is fighting me by installing, against my specifications, software options for which I have no license. And it seems to contradict its own documentation when it deals with BIGFILE restrictions on system, undo, and temp tablespaces.
How can a process as basic and fundamental as software installation/database creation still be so confusing and unreliable even when we are in the 10th version of this database product? If Oracle acutally has a Quality Control Department which does basic testing of its software before it's released, then how can such obvious and glaring problems escape them?
Will someone from Oracle please let me know what is going on?

    Hi, sachin20 --
Thanks for your response. If what you say is true, then the quotation from the DB Admin Guide Chap 8 should have been written this way:
"Locally managed undo tablespaces, temporary tablespaces, and the system tablespace are the only tablespaces that can be BIGFILE tablespaces and not have AUTOMATIC SEGMENT SPACE MANAGEMENT. All other tablespaces must have AUTOMATIC SEGMENT SPACE MANAGEMENT (and therefore be permanent and locally managed) in order to be BIGFILE tablespaces."
That would have made it perfectly clear to me.
So, I can see where I am guilty of misinterpretation. However, the documentation could be clearer with regard to this subject. It was written in a way that could easily lead to the misinterpretation that I seemed to have made. My confusion was further deepened by the fact that the DBCA allowed me the option to specifiy appearantly illegal tablespace configurations and created the database without complaint. Only when I later used the OEM to do a legal operation on the system datafile (change its size) did I get an error notifying me of a problem with my system tablespace configuration.
But this still leaves the issue of the error message that OEM sent me (reproduced in my previous post). The message lists the undo and temporary tablespaces but not the system tablespace as eligible to be a BFTs. This omission contradicts exception #1 in your response above. Perhaps it was just a poorly written error message that was put in the code for the OEM. But it's vague and contradicting documentation like this which make me always uncertain and frustrated, not knowing what is correct whenever I perform DBA tasks using new features.
As for the possibility of the unselected options being automatically installed because of dependencies of other installed options: I did not specify any separately licensed "Enterprise Edition" Option other than the Partitioning Option. The "Oracle Programmer" option is not an "Enterprise Edition" Option, but it does require a separate license, so I made sure to unselect it. My installation was very simple and sparse. The DBCA does suggest that you install such standard options as JVM, XMLDB, and InterMedia, which I did. But it does not seem logical that standard options like those would have dependencies causing the OUI to automatically install expensive, separately licensed products that I did not select. The v$option view and the OUI installed products screen indicate that OLAP, Spatial, and Data Mining somehow got installed.
Can I just use the OUI to uninstall these unwanted options that Oracle loaded automatically, or is removal of these options more problematic than that?
    Thanks again for your response!

  • Exasperation

    Hello,
I purchased a Mac Book Pro in May of 2010. It was a gift for college I spent nearly 1,800 and saved up money to purchase it for a long time. I had heard nothing but great reviews from Mac users, and wanted to purchase something that would help me survive college. I was wrong.
I have owned several computers throughout the course of my life; based upon my parent's occupations. NEVER, never have I had more problems with a computer, than I do with my Mac Book Pro. I have taken it in to genius once already for constant kernel panicing, they claimed it was my harddrive malfunction. The hard drive was replaced and my entire computer was wiped. I started at square one. Here I am nearly three weeks later with the same problem, plus about three others.
Also when I took it in to the Apple store, they we're in such a hurry to get me out the door. It was supposed to be completed and ready for pick up on friday. I recieved no call/email or anything for that matter, I drove 45 miles out of the way to get there on saturday. When I was told it would really be ready on Sunday.
I just wanted to make my situation known for other Mac users and ask...Is there hope for it working normally? This situation has left a "bad taste in my mouth" so to speak.
    C

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Sorry to hear about your problems with your new Mac.
If you have any further problems with your Mac, ask to speak to the store manager and tell him or her about what your experience has been with the misdiagnosis and misinformation about when it was supposed to be ready and the technician's inability to diagnose and fix it. The store manager needs to know about things like this, and also has the authority to decide if you have an intrinsically faulty machine and should get a replacement rather than a repair.
In general, it is a very good idea to call Apple and get a box and send your Mac to the repair depot. I've read of problems with having repairs done locally, but not so much of those done at the repair depot. Usually people are thrilled with how fast their machines are returned and how good the repairs are. The only glitch I know of was when my niece sent hers off, and they failed to notice that the sleep magnet had vanished. She sent hers off on a Tuesday evening, and had it back the next Thursday morning. So the turnaround can be very quick.
You can do more than hope that your machine works correctly--you can insist on it. You have every right to have the perfectly working Mac you paid so much for. If the store manager can't help, you can also call Apple directly and ask to speak to Apple Customer Relations, which is a special tier set up to deal with problems that haven't otherwise been able to be resolved.
Apple likes to have happy customers, and will make every effort to help you resolve the problems you have been having with your Mac. It's often a matter of finding the right person to talk to. Geniuses and other employees are somewhat limited in what they can do, so if they can't solve the problem, it's time to turn to someone else. Give the store manager a chance to make things right, and if no joy, appeal directly to Apple.
    Good luck!

  • A rather angry customer of CC venting his exasperation

    Hi,
I know this is a User to user to user forum and all that. But I just want to vent my irritation in a public place where customers of the same products I use come around.
Due to the hacking of a huge amount of data from Adobe, I have had my debit bank card cancelled and my annual payment for CC stopped as the new card hasn't arrived yet and Adobe asks for a new monyhly payment with the old (blocked) card.
Aside from the troubles this is causing me in my non-digital life, I really hope this annoyance does not interfere with my use of CC —that I have been already paying for a year in 2012. I have never had any trouble whatsoever with any bank card up to now, by the way.
My trust in Adobe safeguarding of my data is, to say it softly, badly shaken.
I just wanted to share this with you, folks.
    Gustavo Sánchez (Posting from Madrid)
PS. And that Apple Developper website happened to be off 'due to security matters' for a while not a long time ago —yeah, I am a costumer of that blood place too!— just gives me the creeps with all this issue of trusting my data to big companies.

  • Keyboard & Mouse - exasperating hangup

    When I go to System Preferences/Keyboard & Mouse, I get a message:
*"Preferences Error: Could not load Keyboard & Mouse preference pane."*
As a result, I can't change the settings. When I try to use my LazyMouse prefpane, I get a blank page.
Does anyone know a way to revive Keyboard & Mouse so it can be used again?

Apparently this is an obscure question.
More specifically, what part(s) of the system work with Mouse Preferences? What's the best way to replace them? Are we talking Archive and Install, or a more specific, Pacifist-style restoration?
Has anyone had experience with something like this?
