Excel 2007: file opened by another user

Hi guys. Help me to hunt down a question.
Then I am trying to open or save a spreadsheet in excel 2007 it always shows me a downloading status bar without any progress. After few minutes the file opens or not. Game of chance. When it didn`t open I get this error message "file
opened by another user".
I should notice that I have windows 7, office 2007. I tried to transfer some files to another pc and at first it`s working good, without any troubles, but then still the same problem. Pops up a dialog window with the message. It happens
on network files only. Of course I have tried to run excel in a save mode and in compatibility mode. But nothing change.
Give me please any clue what can it be and how can I fix it?

Try this. Excel Options, click Advanced at the left side of the dialog window. Then make sure that DDE is selected. By this you make enable the Ignore Other Applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange feature.
And also try the following:  open Tools – Folder options. In the list of the file types choose XLS. Then click the Advanced. Select Open. The Application Used to Perform Action box contains the actual command line used to start Excel.
You should add in this field a space followed by "%1". Be sure to include the quotes. And deselect Use DDE. That’s all steps you should do.
Also you can solve this issue with help of third-party program. This is good one, try it -  Recovery Toolbox for Excel

In principle, this is all that i can reccomend.

  • Windows Server 2008 r2 File service and Storage File opened by "another user"

When I was using Windows server 2003 it show files opened by "user's name" but after changing to windows server 2008 r2 it only shows File opened by "another user" this is a hug problem in our organization which has around 200 staff's
sharing files, and dont know who has opened file,
We administrator can see and close opened file from "Manage opened files" but we want users also to see who has opened current file they are using instead of showing opened by another user displaying the user's name of the file opened.
Can anyone help me with this problem,
    Thank you in Advance,

    Hi,
I tried on a Windows 2008 R2 system and here is the result.
Here "2" is a standard domain user so it could be displayed correctly.
I would like to know if the issue specifically occurs on Office files? If so it could be an Office issue instead of system related. You can try one of the following 2 files:

  • Excel 2010 - Can't Save File Becasue It's Opened By Another User

    Hi All,
I'm using excel 2010, I can create an excel doc, update it, save it on the network, then close it. Then go out of the folder its saved in, go back in and open the file but it flags up as read only as its 'opened by another user'.
I can confirm 100% that no one else has this file open.
This affects multiple users, I have a feeling this may be caused by an update but don't have anything solid to back that theory up.
All users who have this problem are running windows 7 Pro machines, all domain joined.
    Can anyone offer any suggestions?

    Hi,
    Please try the following methods:
    Methods1:
Turn off the Details Pane shown at the bottom of Windows Explorer.  Go to Organize -> Layout -> Details Pane.  That fixes the first problem.
Turn off “Show pop-up description for folder and desktop items”  Click on Tools -> Folder Options.  In the box that opens up, click on the View tab.  Scroll down the list to “Show pop-up description for folder and desktop items” and clear
the checkbox and then click OK.  This fixes the second problem.
Turn off Preview Pane.  Go to Organize -> Layout -> Preview Pane. This fixes number 3.
    Methods2:
    Add the following registry keys:
    Key: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{993BE281-6695-4BA5-8A2A-7AACBFAAB69E}
    Name: EnableShareDenyNone
    Type: REG_DWORD
    Value: 1
    Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{993BE281-6695-4BA5-8A2A-7AACBFAAB69E}
    Name: EnableShareDenyNone
    Type: REG_DWORD
    Value: 1

  • Excel 2007 - Files will not open from outside of Excel 2007

    Hello,
I'm a new user of Xcelsius 2008, in fact I just had it installed yesterday.  The issue I've come across ever since the install, is when I attempt to open an Excel 2007 file from My Documents window (i.e Windows Explorer) a new instance of Excel will open, churn for a few seconds and then nothing...the file doesn't open nor is there a new workbook, all I see is a blank Excel screen.
I am however, able to click on Open within Excel, navigate to the appropriate location and open the file that way.
A couple notes: a) yesterday I also had Business Objects XI 3.1 installed yesterday, one of the options is "Enable Office Add-ins" I've tried to open files through Explorer with and without this enabled.  b) When I try to open a file with Explorer, at the bottom of Excel I see: "Opening:EUROTOOL.XLAM" for a brief moment, and again, all I'm left with is a new instance of a blank Excel screen.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!
    Chase K.

    Hi Chase
    Welcome to the forum!
Well its the newbie gotcha!  The behavior is caused by Live Office compatibility mode.  Go to File - Preferences - Excel Behavior and turn it off, disable it,  uncheck it!  Exit Xcelsius and restart.
You'll probably never have to use internal LO mode since the recommended workflow if you're using LO is to do it outside of Xcelsius anyway.
I know its hard to read all the info when you get a new product. But the initial LO compatibility screen you clicked through does warn about this.
And don't forget to update to the latest FP2, it'll save you posting about issues that have already been fixed.

  • Can you notify a user that the file is opened by another user?

Apologies if this is a repeat or redundant question....
Is there a built-in (non-3rd party) way to have a user notified/alerted that the pdf is open by another user when they open the file.  I know the lock message pops up when you go to save a file thats opened elsewhere....but the problem is that the users un-aware of this until after they've done a bunch of work.
I perfer not to get into having to password protect the files, etc....just an initial alert is desirable.  Any inputs are greatly appreciated.

    There isn't such a mechanism in Acrobat/Reader.

  • Opening MS Excel 2007 files + Spotlight

    Hey all,
    A couple of quick questions.
    1. Is there any way to open MS Excel 2007 files? I tried Neooffice and an XML converter (which I now understand can convert only .docx and .pptx files?)
    2. Is there a spotlight widget? So I can run spotlight whilst pulling up my dashboard?
    Please let me know!
    Thanks in advance!
    Cheers,
    Mustan

    Some quick answers:
    1. No. (Unless you count MS Excel 2007 on Windows.) MS is "working on it."
    2. Not that I know of. But I could be wrong.

  • This file is already open by another user or another application-

I am using InDesign CS4 on Mac OS 10.6.4, and sporadically get an error message reading "This file is already open by another user or another application. This file may be stored on a network server and cannot be opened until the other user closes it." This happens when I try to open a saved .indd file. The files are all on my hard drive, I created them, and nobody else has access to them.
So far I've lost a handful of files' worth of work, as I cannot open the file in InDesign as an original or a copy, nor can I copy the file in the Finder (I get "unknown error: -22"), nor can I copy or move it using Terminal, nor can I zip it up. Time Machine doesn't recognize the file, and Apple Support couldn't help.
I tried calling Adobe Support, but after telling me it was $40 for the answer the phone tech sent me back to the website instead of letting me pay!
How do I fix this? I am losing hours of client work every time this happens, and only if I have a pdf version of the file can I recreate the work.
    Many thanks in advance.

The last time it happened I restarted, cleared both the PRAM and NVRAM, and ran both Disk Utility and Disk Warrior. Nothing fixed it. I changed the permissions a number of times and that did not fix it.
It's important to note that it doesn't happen to every file I save from InDesign; if it did I would have re-installed CS3 and dealt with that, because this issue never happened before I upgraded. So there's also no way to know if a possible fix is working or not.
Also, there were no placed images or other artwork in the file this happened to most recently.
I've checked my FontCase prefs, and if it's not running it's disabled, so that's out. I have some fonts that had been converted from Windows PostScript to TrueType, so I've disabled those.
As I mentioned in the original post, I am not on a network beyond my home network, which consists of two computers and two routers. The file is on my computer's hard drive, and I am the only person accessing it. While I do use Dropbox, this file is not in that directory.

  • Want a warning when a pdf doc is open by another user

We have a pdf doc on the network that we need staff to review, sign and comment on.
Problem is when a second user opens the document, there is no warning to say already open by another user.  So only one user can save their changes and the others are lost.
Can we get it to give a warning like word and excel do when the document is open by another user?

No. You should deny the users write access to the file, forcing them to save it locally or under a different name.

  • Problem in Microsoft Excel 2007 when opening XLS from content library

    Hi gurus,
I'm facing the following problem. When we try to open an Excel template that we have in our content library a message appears. The message is: The file you are trying to open " showfile.aspx" is in a different format than specified by the file extension...
it doesn't happen if you open with Microsof Excel 2003. Any idea to solve the problem?

    Hi,
Please follow below steps to remove Excel Add-in from Excel 2007: -
1- Open Excel 2007 and click on icon placed at top left corner and select option 'Excel Options'.
3- Now select option 'Add-In' from left window menu and then click on button 'Go' appears on the bottom of right window. It will open a new window.
4- Please de-select option 'Hyperion Essbase OLAP server DLL' in new window.
    It will disable Excel Add-in.
    Hope it will help you.

  • Unable to save document - Read Only or Open by another user error occurs when PDF is opened from Windows Explorer

Adobe Pro XI  - using Windows 7 Pro OS
When a PDF document is opened from Windows Explorer, and pages are added, deleted, notations made, any type of changes, it cannot be saved until Windows Explorer is fully closed.  If you try to save the document, you receive the following error - "The document could not be saved.  The file may be read-only, or another user may have it opened.  Please save the document with a different name or in a differnt folder. "   I have confirmed the document is not read only, it is not open by another user, and it is not open multiple times.  Once you fully close Windows Explorer, and try to save the document, it saves without a problem.
Are there settings in either Adobe Pro XI or Windows that will allow you to save documents without closing Windows Explorer first?
Thank you for any assistance you can provide.  This error is a frustration since I open all my documents through Windows Explorer.

  • Accessing Excel 2007-file from BO Explorer App

    Hello all,

Accessing this file from the Browser is no problem and accessing the same file saved as excel 2003 is also no problem from the IPad.
Anybody an idea what could be the problem? I have to save some files with excel 2007 because number of rows.
    Thanks in advance!

Additional hint: Always the following error message appears:
It is not possible to retrieve the facets within the Explore tab.
org.xml.sax.SAXParseException:Character reference "&#26" is an invalid XML character.
    Any idea? Thanks!

I do now see that you are correct: there is a difference between Excel 2007 and Excel 2010. Your particular usage is somewhat unusual and there probably isn't anything you can do, except to recognise that you are a beneficiary
of it (although others may be less fortunate).
The type of protection that you are applying protects the workbook against certain types of change; it does not prevent people opening it, and they do not need a password to open it, so, in a sense, it does not need to be
encrypted. In Excel 2007 (and Excel 2003 before it), the workbook was, nonetheless, encrypted, and in Excel 2010 it isn't.
This change means that someone can remove the protection outside Excel (just by deleting that single line of XML), something that couldn't be done before so it is a loss of security.
I'm a Word person, rather than Excel, and I don't know all the details of the different types of 'protection' that can be applied to Workbooks and Sheets.
I have, however, not seen anything about this before and will ask some Excel friends if they know anything. Beyond that I don't think I can help any more.
    Enjoy,
    Tony

  • CS3 File open by two users simultaneously

I work in an office network environment, at a news paper, and we use InDesign CS3 to lay out our paper.
We're having a problem where two users are able to open and work on the same file at the same time, and save it. It's led to work being lost.
If one person has the file open, and another person tries to open the same file, there is no warning saying the file is already open, or message saying you can't open it because it's in use.
How do we change the file permission (or whatever needs to be changed) to ensure we either can't open the file or at least get a warning saying it's already open?

Just found out what my problem may be but don't know how to solve it. When I open a file it's not creating a lock file (.idlk).
I did a search on our network for files with that extension and opened the related original file. Each time I open one of the InDesign pages it deletes the lock file.
It's like it's working in reverse. Instead of creating a lock file when the InDesign page is opened and then auto-deleting it when it's closed, it's doing the opposite.
My question now is how do I fix this?

  • Can't send Excel 2007 File via Send To Email Option after Acrobat Install

Normally, you can send an Excel 2007 file via email to someone by going to the Send option on the Excel file menu and choosing "Email." This will email an actual copy of the Excel 2007 file. However, since installing Adobe Acrobat  9 pro on my computer, this option, as well as the option to send to XPS are gone -- the only email option I have on that menu is to convert the file to a PDF and email it.
It seems to me that Acrobat should ADD options to menus but not remove any! Does anyone know how I can get those missing options (especially the one to email the actual file itself) back? I've tried Googling up a solution, but to no avail so far.
Thanks, in advance, for any help!
    Laura

Thanks for taking the time to respond, Aditya!
I saw that MS support article when I was trying to solve this issue on my own, but the solutions it proposes won't work for me -- I can't set Outlook as my email client (this is a work computer and we use Lotus Notes) and I can't muck around in the registry (again, this is a work computer). I know I can attach the Excel via the attach command in the email client, but the main thing is I don't understand why Acrobat has removed that option from the Excel menu. Also, it removed the Send to XPS option (which I don't really care about, but it bothers me because it shouldn't be deleting anything)!
I even tried adding the Email command to the Quick Access Toolbar in Excel -- it let me add the button, but, when I click it, absolutely nothing happens.
