Excel as default...

I have Excel on my Mac, but Numbers always opens by default when I download spreadsheets.  I'm not really getting on with Numbers and copying data from Numbers to Excel is a real pain.  I love my Mac but I really can't be bothered to learn Numbers when I am familiar with and like Excel.
How can I get Excel to become the default operating programme - or delete Numbers from my Mac?
Many thanks for any help!

Find an Excel file on your drive. Actually, you might need to find one that's XLS and one that is XLSX. Right click on each and Get Info. Change the "Open with" to Excel and click on Change All.

  • Excel export defaults to ".txt"

    Hi Forum,
    I have a question regarding the "Excel" export button on SAP B1.
    Whrn i try to export data clicking the excel button, the window "Save As" defaults to ".txt" extension.... is there a place to change the default to make it ".xls" instead???
    Regards,
    Manuel Roman

    Hi Gordon,
    I had B1 on a pc that anytime that i clicked on the excel button and save it, the document would open in excel right away.
    Now i have a laptop with XP Pro (same configuration as the pc) and everytime i click on save, saves the document and it doesn't open right away.... i have to basically import the txt file into excel....
    The funny thing is that it was opening the file in excel and it was formatted correctly.
    Any Ideas?

  • How to restore Appleworks 6 instead of ExCel as default to read .xls?

    I just loaded Appleworks 6 software from an old eMac applications disk onto my new MacBook because I don't want to buy iWork '08. Appleworks 6 works fine in general on my MacBook, but when I try to open Windows spreadsheets sent to me from a colleague, Appleworks with MacLinkPlus is no longer the default program as it had been on my eMac. Instead, ExCel for Mac now wants to open them by default, but since I refuse to buy iWorks of which ExCel is a part, they don't open. I can still read the spreadsheets in Appleworks 6 by choosing "Open With" from the drop down "File" menu in the Finder, but this is now an extra step. How can I restore Appleworks & MacLinkPlus as the default program to open these spreadsheets and not have go through this extra step?

    HI Spokesman,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions and the AppleWorks forum.
    You wrote: "(S)ince I refuse to buy iWorks of which ExCel is a part, they don't open."
    Microsoft Excel is one of the applications in the MS Office suite, and not a part of iWork (no 's'), made by Apple. The spreadsheet application Numbers was added to the iWork suite with iWork '08.
    To your issue:
    Go to the Finder and locate an Excel file with the file extension .xls). Click on the file (once), then press command-I to Get info.
    In the Get info window, look to the Open with...section (If necessary, click the disclosure triangle to expand the section).
    Use the pull down menu to change the application name from Microsoft Excel to AppleWorks 6. If AW 6 is not in the listed choices, select Other..., navigate to and open the AppleWorks 6 folder, select AppleWorks 6, then click Select (or OK).
    Click the Change all button to apply the change to all files with the .xls extension.
    Close the Get info window.

  • How do I set Excel as default program to open CSV files?

    I am using a program that creates CSV files which I wish to open with Excel. Currently, the CSV files just open as a raw data sheet on my computer. Support folks said I didn't have Excel as my default program to open CSV files; How do I do this?
    Thanks,
    Kevin

    You can only set an automatic download action for CSV to open with Excel is a website sends such a file with a supported MIME type. In other cases you need to select the application to use. You can set the default application via Windows Explorer to make Firefox offer that as first choice (right click a CSV file > Open With).

  • Excel chart default font

    Hi,
    by default new charts in Excel use the  body text font from the selected theme. Is it posible to get the chart to use the theme heading font as default instead? Most of my clients want their heading font for charts instead of the body text font, whitch
    makes it difficult to create a theme that works in both Word and Excel.
    Regards, Åsa

    Hi,
    I'm sorry for my misunderstanding, I wand to confirm your requirement. According to your description, my understanding is that you need to use headings font instand of the body text font in Excel chart.
    Here is two workarounds, please try them:
    1.Customize the Theme in Page layout Tab > Save as template
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/excel-help/change-the-default-theme-HA010204550.aspx
    2.Use a macro. It will help you apply the format after you creating the chart.
    Note:  We need to change the font and size before using it.
    Sub ChartTitleFont()
    'Prevents screen refresh whilst macro executes
    Application.ScreenUpdating = False
    'Run the Error handler "ErrHandler" when an error occurs.
    On Error GoTo Errhandler
    Dim ChartList As Integer
    Dim x As Integer
    ' Variable chartlist stores a count of all embedded charts.
    ChartList = ActiveSheet.ChartObjects.Count
    ' Increments the counter variable 'X' in a loop.
    For x = 1 To ChartList
    ' Selects the chart object.
    ActiveSheet.ChartObjects(x).Select
    ' Makes chart active.
    ActiveSheet.ChartObjects(x).Activate
    ActiveChart.ChartTitle.Select
    Selection.AutoScaleFont = True
    With Selection.Font
    .Name = "Calibri Light (Headings)"
    .FontStyle = "Regular"
    .Size = 20
    End With
    Next
    Errhandler:
    End Sub

  • Excel 2010 missing default suggested file name in Save As dialog box

    I’m using Excel 2010 running on Windows 7 (32 bit).  When I open a certain file which produces the following message: "A file is in a different file format than its extension indicates", and then go to “Save As” (or “Save”) the
    file, the default suggested file name is missing (blank).  This didn't occur in previous versions of Excel.
    In previous versions, Excel would automatically populate the original file name in to the File Name field.
      I have searched all over the net, looking for a way to change Excel so that it will once again populate the file name in this situation.
    To reproduce:
    Create a new blank workbook
    save as type “Web Page”, (i.e. File name:  “Blank Example.html”)
    Close workbook
    In windows, rename file from .html to .xls  (i.e. rename “Blank Example.html” to “Blank Example.xls”)
    In Excel open renamed file (i.e. “Blank Example.xls”) and click “Yes” when prompted with the “A file is in a different file format than its extension indicates” message.
    Do a “Save As” and you will notice that the File Name is blank. In previous versions, this field would contain the current workbook file name
     (i.e. “Blank Example.xls”)
    Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Jaynet,
    In order to re-produce this, you need to answer "yes" to the rename file prompt and then continue with step 5 (above).
    The reason for this is not an exercise in futility - I assure you.  At my work and elsewhere, when web developers have created features to permit the end user to save web data in Excel format, often times the Excel files are saved locally in Excel's
    html format (but with the .xls
    extension).
    (I actually prefer the .xls
    extension, because it is easier to just double-click the file to open in Excel, rather than to select the open-with and then select Excel. a file with the .html extension will default open in your default browser. Now, I could change my default program
    for the .html extension, but that would only solve a part of the problem and would not really address the bigger issue and that being that Microsoft changed a behavior in Excel and may not even be aware that it was a much used feature. )
    To continue, when I go to open the resulting Excel file, I am prompted with the message that the file type does not match the extension (which is fine and not bothersome to me).  It's at this point when I go to save the file that I get really annoyed.
    In previous versions of Excel, the default file name would be pre-filled with the current name of the file and the default file type would state that it is a Web html file.  I would just change the file type to Excel Workbook and hit enter to save.
    I would be prompted with "Are you sure you want to overwrite your existing file?" message and I would click "yes" and that would be that.
    However, in Excel 2010, because the default file name is blank, I then need to re-type the name into the field to save the file.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Can I programmatically force saving an XLTM template to save as an XLSM file in Excel 2010 without defaulting all Excel file types?

    I created an Excel template which includes VB and macros as an EXCEL.XLTM template file (I used a template file to keep users from overwriting the sample template file), but I have noticed that when users save the template, Excel 2010 defaults to saving
    the new file as a XLSX file (removing all the macros).
    I know you can set Excel 2010 to always save as a certain format, but I really would prefer not forcing all Excel files to be macro enabled for the user
    Is there a way to default the Save type to XLSM for this template only?  Like some code that I could put in that when the users saves, it saves as a macro enabled XLSM type only for this template file?
    My users aren't exactly Excel savvy, so I wanted to make it as simple as possible for them.
    Thanks!
    Alan Edwards

    Hi Alan,
    >> Is there a way to default the Save type to XLSM for this template only?  Like some code that I could put in that when the users saves, it saves as a macro enabled XLSM type only for this template file?
    In my option, you could achieve this by adding Application.GetSaveAsFilename Method to the workbook BeforeSave event. Some key code like below:
    Private Sub Workbook_BeforeSave(ByVal SaveAsUI As Boolean, Cancel As Boolean)
    Dim FileNameVal As String
    If SaveAsUI Then
    FileNameVal = Application.GetSaveAsFilename(, "Excel Macro-Enabled Workbook (*.xlsm), *.xlsm")
    Cancel = True
    If FileNameVal = "False" Then 'User pressed cancel
    Exit Sub
    End If
    ThisWorkbook.SaveAs Filename:=FileNameVal & ".xlsm", FileFormat:=xlOpenXMLWorkbookMacroEnabled
    Application.EnableEvents = True
    End If
    End Sub
    But there is a limitation of this workaround, in this workaround, the save as will only support the macro enabled type, other save as types like "xlsx" will be ignored.
    For more information about Application.GetSaveAsFilename Method (Excel), you could turn to the link below:
    #Application.GetSaveAsFilename Method (Excel)

  • Default Excel for Discoverer Desktop

    I have searched through the forum but never really found an answer for changing the defalut excel for Discoverer Desktop. We are using 10.2.2.45.45c. When exporting to excel it defaults to Mircrosolft Excel 5.0/95 Workbook. We need it to default to Excel 2003 or later this year to Mircosoft Excel 2013.
    Is there a registry setting somewhere I can add ?
    We have a several excel files that are produced by command line and this is starting to cause us some grief.

    The administrator is a client-tool, installed from the bi-tools cd. The default url for viewer/plus looks like http://<server>:<port, default 7778>/discoverer/plus or /viewer. When you don't run in applications mode (for Oracle eBS) then you can use db-accounts to logon to Discoverer, in the Administrator logon with the EUL-owner, go to manage->privileges and give certain db-accounts the privilige to query/create workbooks and manage access to one or more business areas.

  • Default export to excel

    We are using Discoverer 10.1.2, we want to customize the export funtionality of Discoverer Viewer in such a way that it would export to Excel by default when the user clicks on export instead of givng him various options. Any suggestions? I assume this has to be with App Server config files.
    Thanks

    This is practically an identical answer I gave on anther thread on this forum right now. Same idea in that you're customizing viewer in a 'non-standard' way.
    Russ
    You would be performing a customization in that it would be a global change in that everyone will have the same limitation using Viewer.
    However, a post on doing nearly this exact thing can be seen at:
    http://oraclebi.blogspot.com
    which is the blog for a couple of Oracle BI Project Managers.
    If you search in the search box for 'UIX' and choose 'search this blog', you'll see some hacks and 'How To Customize The Export Formats List in Viewer' is the one that may interest you.
    Now ... if I don't say it ... someone else will (although maybe not so humously), so ...
    1. Oracle doesn't support this
    2. Oracle will say it voids all sorts of stuff
    3. You wife will leave you, the kids will join a punk rock band, the dog will relieve itself in the house, and the car won't start (well at least it will seem that way with all the warnings you'll get for this kind of thing)
    4. If you're an adult now, then treat it like an adult would (ie: back up all the UIX files to a directory first, don't touch that backup upon penalty of death, and only restore back from that area if you screw up your UIX hack). If you just treat it like altering an Oracle Apps Form (ie: you don't play with Oracle's original one, you make a copy, work on the copy and link the copy in as the new one right), then you'll be okay
    On a sidenote, I could resist mentioning something funny (well I thought it was funny) as I always state all these warnings, and still people miss them. Hopefully the message has now gone so far down in the list that you won't want to see it (and the author isn't on this forum), but recently on the BI forum here, someone was asking where they could get a copy of the UIX files. Makes me think ...
    I guess his wife left him, the kids joined a punk rock band ... you get the idea.

  • Report from SQL Query -Excel format only show the first page

    Hi,
    I have some Reports from SQL Query. In the display options, I choose Excel as default format. The Excel documents only show the first page. If I choose HTML as default format, it shows every rows.
    Please advise on how to have a complete Excel document as HTML format does.
    Thanks a lot.
    Lina Han

    I beleive when you export Oracle reports to Excel it is the Data that is transferred along with Column Names.
    You cannot export the variables defined on the report.
    Hence you will not be able to export the Footer to excel. (Still looking into it will let you know if i find anything interesting)

  • EXCEL output logo issues in  XML Publisher

    Hi,
    We are using XML Publisher API to generate PDF,EXCEL outputs using Template. While adding image to the template its showing in the pdf output. But not showing in the Excel output. Then i added url:{/Image} in the alt text of the image in template and submitted the report again now able to see the image in excel output. Can you please tell me why its not showing the image in excel by default which is right happening in case of PDF. Iam getting the same issue for HTML outputs generation also. Please tell me what i can do to get the image by default same as the way i am getting in PDF.
    Thanks
    Satya

    Hi Alex,
    Thanks for your suggession.
    I have two OAF versions and i found the xml publisher version from the below java file
    $OA_JAVA/oracle/apps/xdo/common/MetaInfo.class
    in both 11.5.10 and 12.1.1 OAF versions i am seeing the below line of code
    public static final String VERSION = "Oracle XML Publisher 5.6.3";
    when i login to the application and went to the About this page option available there
    in 11.5.10 i got to see that the version
    is XML Oracle XDK Java 9.0.4.0.0 Production
    in 12.1.1 version
    XML Oracle XML Developers Kit 10.1.3.130 - Production
    But as per your seggession from the MOS document 736897.1, i came to know that it is an issue in 5.6.3
    Can you please tell me how to find out my xml publisher version in different EBS versions.
    I am using Office 2007.
    Finally,
    in the document i can see that
    Applies to:
    *BI Publisher (formerly XML Publisher) - Version 11.5 to 12.1 [Release 11.5 to 12.1]*
    Information in this document applies to any platform.
    Means this issue is not fixed even in 12.1.3.
    To resolve this issue,do we need to do the manual image setup like the way menioned in the document 736897.1?
    Thanks

  • Microsoft Excel Mac Issues - Print Format

    I have Microsoft Office Mac 2008 and just purchased Microsoft Office Mac2011.
    There is a formatting issue with printing spreadsheets as Excel defaults to Portrait and 100% Scaling. I save the Excel worksheets formatted as Landscape and 60% Scaling in order to fit each worksheet on one page. However, when I then reopen a spreadsheet and attempt to print, Excel frequently defaults to Portrait and 100% scale, so the worksheet may then take four pages to print.
    This is very frustrating and unprofessional when I send the spreadsheet to a third party. It appears as if I don't know how to format the Print function.
    I spent more than an hour with Mac technical support, but they could not resolve the issue. We uninstalled Office, including all of the Libraries, several times, but the problem persists.
    I hoped that Microsoft Office Mac 2011 would resolve the issue, but it is still a problem.
    Has anyone else encountered this problem? Does anyone have a solution?
    Thank you very much.
