Excel won't import PDFs

I recently updated to Adobe Reader X and suddenly can no longer import PDFs into Excel. This was working fine up until the update this past week, as I do this function weekly for school work.
Any idea why?
When I have Excel open, I use the insert object, create new, adobe acrobat document, click ok, and then excel locks up, I see adobe reader load, then get an error message within Excel: "cannot start the source application for this object"
Adobe Reader then has the error message: "There was an error opening this document. This file cannot be found"
The problem is, I wasn't even prompted to choose the file before Excel locked up.
I've tried making sure Adobe Reader was running and open prior to the insert object function but this doesn't seem to help either.
Any ideas appreciated, this is the only way I can submit my homework!
ETA: Running Win7 32-bit and Office 2007

Since Excel is not an Apple product. You'll get better response if you use a forum dedicated to Microsoft's Mac products such as <http://groups-beta.google.com/group/microsoft.public.mac.office> rather than this one, which is dedicated to using Mac/Windows compatibility.

  • How do i import excel data base into pdf form drop down field

    Hi,
    I have a table of about 2500 rows and three columns that i would like to import into a drop down window on a PDF form to be self populated when item selected rather than entering the data. How can this be done?
    Thanks!
    Richard

    Hi,
    I did not know only two entries for each option item is it. I have manually entered data in the drop down an list boxes. With 2500 lines of data I was hoping there was an easier way other than manually entering the data.
    I have no knowledge of Java Scripting.....
    I was just wondering if there was a way from an Excel spreadsheet to import that data into a PDF form to be selectable to populate PDF fields in a form. It doesn't sound like it.
    Thanks......

  • Using Excel VBA to save PDF file as a text (plain) file?

    I'm using 8.0 Acrobat Pro.
    Third party apps are not an option (I'm restricted from installing anything on my office PC).
    I could simply save each PDF manually, but given the number of files this would not be practical.
    The text it will output does not have to be pretty by any means (and I'm aware it won't be).
    As long as I can get the PDF files in a text file format, there would be no further obstacles for me - because I would then be able to get Excel to gather-import all the data and consolidate-clean-organize everything accordingly at that point.
    What's in these PDF files are simply names, numbers, and email addresses (basic office text type data stuff simple).
    I wish to save them all as text files, and then use Excel to suck all the data from those newly created text files and consolidate-organize them accordingly.
    The VBA module I've seen referrenced around the web is the following beneath; however, I am having no luck with it.
    I keep getting the error message:
    ActiveX component can't create object or  return reference to this object (Error 429)
    I am running Microsoft Office 2010 | Excel (and using Adobe Acrobat Pro 8.0).
    Any help is extremely appreciated.
    Here is the VB code in Excel I'm having trouble with:  What this is supposed to do is simply find the specified PDF file and save it as a Plain Txt File.
    Sub Convert_PDF_To_Text_File()
    Dim AcroXApp As Object
    Dim AcroXAVDoc As Object
    Dim AcroXPDDoc As Object
    Set AcroXApp = CreateObject("AcroExch.App")
    AcroXApp.Hide
    Set AcroXAVDoc = CreateObject("AcroExch.AVDoc")
    AcroXAVDoc.Open strPDFPath, "Acrobat"
    AcroXAVDoc.BringToFront
    Set AcroXPDDoc = AcroXAVDoc.GetPDDoc
    Dim jsObj As Object
    Set jsObj = AcroXPDDoc.GetJSObject
    jsObj.SaveAs strOutputFile, "com.adobe.acrobat.plain-text"
    AcroXAVDoc.Close False
    AcroXApp.Exit
    End Sub

    one other thought is that you can create text files with a batch process inside of acrobat.  Advanced ---> Document Processing ----> Batch Processing.
    Choose new sequence, give it a name
    Step 1: Select Commands ----> Choose "execute javascript", then hit "Add."  Click on "Execute Javascript" that was just added on the right, then hit the edit button and toss in the script below that I grabbed from the javascript samples (also, if your docs have multiple pages you'll need to embed the for loop into another for loop that cycles through each page).  You'd also want to change the name of the saved txt file to the name of pdf you're doing it to.  It shouldn't be that hard, but I'm guessing you're probably alot more familiar with VBA then javascript which is why you're choosing to do it from excel.  I'm kind of in the same boat of having written a bunch of VBA, but not much javascript.  I highly recommend investing some time into learning acrobat scripting b/c VB does have it's limitations when it comes to messing with PDF's.

  • Iphoto won't import photos from Kodak EasyShare Camera

    I have alsways been able to import photos from my canon camera directly into iphoto. I just purchased a Kodak Easyshare Camera. When I hook it up to my computer, it won't import the photos. The camera does come with it's own EasyShare Software - but I really don't want to import it into my computer. I want the photos to import directly into iphoto library. My Canon Camera still imports into the library. Help.

    sunnydays:
    Does System Profiler recognize the camera when it's connected? What version of iPhoto and Quicktime are you at. If not the latest then I suggest you update to 6.0.0 and 7.2 respectively. I'd also update to 10.4.10 via the COMBO updater followed by a repair of disk permissions.
    Do you have iPhoto erase the memory card after each upload? If so, I strongly recommend against it as I've seen too many reports of incomplete uploads and complete erasures. It's safer to have the camera reformat the card after the upload.
    Do you Twango?
    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Importing PDFs

    RH 8, Windows XP, Adobe Acrobat...I've been having some trouble with importing some PDF files - images blow up, text gets moved around, and some of the files (which were not created by me) generate a message that says the files are corrupted or in the wrong format.  Is there a list or a guide somewhere that contains the features and formats that won't import correctly from a PDF file so I can create my files so they'll import more effectively?
    Thanks!

    You seem to feel that we have somehow reacted badly? We are simply advising as to what is and isn't possible as well as advising you how the product installs. Many folks won't like the fact the help installs as an application and doesn't remain in a singular package.
    Sure, Adobe is hoping AIR takes off and becomes as predominant as the Flash player and Acrobat PDF reader. But you must also understand that it too has its own limitations just as any other deployment mechanism does. For example, you cannot customize the skins. You are limited to a very few choices in layout. That's a huge down side to me. It doesn't work the same in the Web based incarnation as it does in the locally installed incarnation.
    So while we love our products, we are also real world users of them. Just because sales may hype something up as being the best thing since sliced bread or peanut butter, we are going to view it with a slightly different, somewhat skeptical and more realistic eye. We also aren't going to blindly hype something.
    And really, when it comes down to brass tacks, wouldn't you rather have honest and open opinions than having folks just blindly lead you down the primrose path? I feel it doesn't do Adobe or you any favor by reacting differently.

  • Importing PDF to robohelp not working

    Anyone know why a PDF file wouldn't import into robohelp 8?  I've tried saving it into different formats, but still no luck.

    Hi there
    In my own experience sometimes PDFs won't import because of the manner in which they have been created. For example, maybe the PDF is protected in some way? I've also seen PDFs that were "too complex" for RoboHelp to import them and I had to fiddle with the different ways of importing the content in order to make them come in.
    In the worst case scenario, you can always leave the content as a PDF and just add it to baggage and create a link to open it up.

  • Excel Spreadsheet Journal Import

    I'm trying to debug an issue related to using the Excel Spreadsheet Journal Import. Where does the validation take place? I'm using Financial 9.0. But what actually happens when you click the import button? It looks like an XML message is sent. Does anyone know if this happens and if so what the name of the message is that is supposed to handle the incoming message??
    Thanks all in advance!!

    Kathleen,
    No, Data Merge won't do. The context of need in this case is placing an Excel spreadsheet into InDesign; with Show Import Options turned on; with the workflow idea of bringing it in unformatted; yet applying a pre-made TableStyle to it.
    It turns out in this case that you have to follow up with selecting the first row (the header row) and clicking on Table > Convert (something or other) and choosing Header, thus turning the header row into a mechanically-repeating row (as in the case of a very long table that flows over more than one page).
    You can do this in advance if it is a Word doc table. That is, it can be set in Word before placing. Apparently you cannont do so in advance in Excel.
    Therefore, upon placing, the TableStyle appears to fail to some degree until you catch up with the Header Row conversion.
    Best to you,
    Mike Witherell in Alexandria, VA
    I'm not sure if this would help:
    * Create the heading row content on the master page, either as literal text in a text frame, or as a text variable.
    * Use Data Merge multiple records per page mode on the body page.
    This creates a pseudo table heading above the merged data on each new page. You'll have to adjust the height, vertical justification, and text wrap when defining the master page text frame text wrap to force the merged data to begin below it on the page.
    If you truly need a table, perhaps because some column content needs to wrap within cells, then "never mind." But if that's not the problem, perhaps nested and GREP styles could manage the formatting you need.

  • IPhoto won't import all photos at once

    I just got iPhoto 08 and also got a new camera. The iPhoto will not import all the photos from the camera (more than 100), but will importa a few selected, seems to accept about 5-6 max. Also, after doing that a couple of times, it won't import any more. It seems that if I start all over, unmount the camera and start all over, it will again allow me to import a few more photos. I still have 96 more to go. This is just awful. With the old iPhoto and the old camera, it was just so easy to import all the photos from my camera at once. I have over 5000 photos on the computer. I am really frustrated. I did not see this question addressed on the discussion board, and I'm wondering what I should do. The camera is a Sony Cybershot DSC-W80.

    Lisa C:
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I don't know of a solution but as a workaround you can use Image Capture, its preferences set which application to open when a camera is connected, to upload to a folder on the Desktop and then import the folder. If you title the folder as you want the Event to be titled it will create the Event with that name.
    I use a card reader to do the same as it will save the camera's ports and battery and avoid possible upload aborts due to low battery and large number of photos to upload.

    All of the other movies on the card download with out a problem. The movie in question is not 'corrupt' as you can watch it in iMovie direct from the SD card but as soon as you try to import it, it  just says 'error'. iIve tried moving the file to an external drive ( and other variations on this theme) then importing but have had no luck.
    Can anyone please help me.

    The mystery remains....
    Thanks for the pointers. The file type is .mts (a proprietry sony one).
    I have now found some video converter software (Wondershare and iSkysoft) at a cost. Either will convert this file for me into .mp4. This I can then import into iMovie without any problems. I've checked this on the trial versions and it worked well but without paying am left with a giant watermark in the video
    The mystery (which I still havent solved) is why did 20 other .mts files import fine and then this one not?
    If you could point me in the direction of some free .mts converter software that would be the cherry on the cake.
    Thanks

  • How come pages won't open PDF files made by Pages?

    How come pages won't open PDF files made by Pages?
    I have files I made with Pages and exported as PDF but I can't open them with pages to edit?
    Also, where are the recent files created by pages located? Can't find those to open either..

    Hi Tom,
    I was delighted when I signed up for Pages. Clunky yes, but it worked. I've been a graphic designer on a Mac for 25 plus years and have logged too many horror stories of "upgrade" wars which cost me massive lost time, data and money forcibly extracted just so I could finish a project.
    When I first used Pages in April of 2012? or there about, I was able to open Word documents exported to .pdf format, emailed to me, which I then dragged into Pages. I could make the changes I needed to make, export as a .pdf, return it back to my client which they could then edit on whatever it was they were using. I'm not a neophyte with this. I've had Original Photoshop as a stand alone, Quark (which locked users out 6 months after I purchased it.) Quark again, Freehand, Pagemaker, Illustrator, Photoshop again, Creative Suite for several upgrades, Acrobat Pro. 2 years ago I lost 6 years of Quicken data and had to and "upgrade" start over. This last go around I  had to "upgrade" my Apple ID - yes I had 2 on purpose, lost my Pandora One and my ability to get into the Tulsa County Library website.
    At this point, I'm retired and feel like what I've paid for in the past should WORK today. I have a 100+ page cookbook in Quark which I was able to export as a .pdf, that I've lost the tags too, Easier to start over. I have artwork that is hundreds of megs in Photoshop. Not the least bit interested in anybody's "cloud".
    Thanks for letting me vent. I'm determined to keep my equipment and software up to date so I can enjoy the skills I've acquired, but I completely cringe at Apple's antics. I truly hate it when I have to respond to some new "tip" or product offer. BooHiss. Happy Turkey Day. Pages is a "turkey" program.
    Best regards, mbd

  • How can I auto export a PDF File using the "Smallest File Size" preset and set the Exported File Name based on information from an Imported PDF?

    Greetings all,
    I am trying to create a script to automate a PDF export process for my company for inDesign. I’m fairly new to inDesign itself and have no previous experience with javascript, although I did take C++ in high school and have found it helpful in putting this code together.
    We have an inDesign template file and then use the Multi-page PDF importer script to import PDF files. We then have to export two version of each file that we import, then delete the imported file and all of the pages to reset the template. This has to be done for nearly 1000 pdf files each month and is quite tedious. I’m working on automating the process as much as possible. I’ve managed to piece together code that will cleanup the file much quicker and am now trying to automate the PDF exports themselves.
    The files are sent to us as “TRUGLY#####_Client” and need to be exported as “POP#####_Client_Date-Range_North/South.pdf”
    For example, TRUGLY12345_Client needs to be exported as POP12345_Client_Mar01-Mar31_North and POP12345_Client_Mar01-Mar31_South.
    There are two templates built into the template file for the north and south file that are toggled easily via layer visibility switches. I need to get a code that can ideally read the #s from the imported Trugly file as well as the Client and input those into variables to use when exporting. The date range is found in the same place in the top right of each pdf file. I am not sure if this can be read somehow or if it will have to be input manually. I can put North or South into the file name based on which template layer is visible.
    I am not sure how to go about doing this. I did find the following code for exporting to PDF with preset but it requires me to select a preset and then type the full file name. How can I set it to automatically use the “Smallest File Size” preset without prompting me to choose and then automatically input some or preferably all of the file name automatically? (If the entire filename is possible then I don’t even want a prompt to appear so it will be fully automated!)
    PDF Export Code (Originally from here: Simple PDF Export with Preset selection | IndiSnip [InDesign® Snippets]):
    var myPresets = app.pdfExportPresets.everyItem().name;
    myPresets.unshift("- Select Preset -");
    var myWin = new Window('dialog', 'PDF Export Presets');
    myWin.orientation = 'row';
    with(myWin){
        myWin.sText = add('statictext', undefined, 'Select PDF Export preset:');
        myWin.myPDFExport = add('dropdownlist',undefined,undefined,{items:myPresets});
        myWin.myPDFExport.selection = 0;
        myWin.btnOK = add('button', undefined, 'OK');
    myWin.center();
    var myWindow = myWin.show();
    if(myWindow == true && myWin.myPDFExport.selection.index != 0){
        var myPreset = app.pdfExportPresets.item(String(myWin.myPDFExport.selection));
        myFile = File(File.saveDialog("Save file with preset: " + myPreset.name,"PDF files: *.pdf"));
        if(myFile != null){
            app.activeDocument.exportFile(ExportFormat.PDF_TYPE, myFile, false, myPreset);
        }else{
            alert("No File selected");
    }else{
        alert("No PDF Preset selected");
    So far my code does the following:
    1) Runs the Multi-Page PDF Import Script
    2) Runs PDF Export Script Above
    3) Toggles the Template
    4) Runs #2 Again
    5) Deletes the imported PDF and all pages and toggles template again.
    It’s close and much better than the original process which was almost 100% manual but I’d like to remove the Preset prompt from the PDF script and have it automatically select the “Smallest File Size” preset. and then if there’s a way to have it auto-fill in the file name so no user input is required at all other than selecting each file to import. (If there’s a way to setup a batch action for the multi-import script that would be even better!)
    Thanks in advance and if there’s anything else I can provide that would help please let me know! Even a nudge in the right direction will be a big help!

    If you hold down the option key, it will typically show the location. Or you can often hit option-return on the file and it will reveal the file in the Finder, instead of opening it.
    Final option is to open it, and just option-click the filename in the toolbar of Preview and it should show you the location.
    It's probably an attachment to an email you've received. If you have Mail set to cache emails and their attachments it'll be stashed in a subdirectory of ~/Library/Mail. Which is fine.

    When trying to merge the files, this file ask for a Password. No password was issued from the setup or mail?

    Good day abrieb93050306,
    I can understand your concern, however can you please let me know that are you able to open both the PDF files ( the one you converted form excel to pdf & the other pdf that was mailed to you ) individually without using any password?
    As it asks for the password, it means that the postal mailed PDF is password protected. You can ask for the password from the sender of the postal mail & then try to combine the files.
    Please follow the steps in the provided KB doc.to combine the files : Combine files into single PDF | Adobe Acrobat DC tutorials
    This will probably resolve your issue.
    Let me know if you still experience any issue.
