Exception Side-loading Metro application to Windows 8.1 Pro tablet
I'm running a Windows 8.1 Pro system in a tablet, I side-loaded a metro application developed with VS 2013 for testing purpose. I was able to do it one time, and everything worked fine, but when the I tried to side-load an update for my application I run
into problems.
When executing the command Show-WindowsDeveloperLicenseRegistration I get the following error message and exception:
You need administrator privileges to acquire or remove a developer license.
At line1 char 1
CategoryInfo : PermissionDenied [Show-WindowsDeveloperLicenseRegistration], UnauthorizedAccessExecution
FullyQualifiedErrorId : NonAdminAccessException, Microsoft.Windows.DeveloperLicense.Commands.WindowsDeveloperLicenseRegistrationCommand
I'm running an admin account, I can log with this account at Microsoft as well. I also run windows validation and it report that my windows is genuine.
I need advice on this.
Thanks.
You need to run PowerShell as Administrator. You should be able to do so by right clicking the PowerShell link and selecting "Run as Administrator" as regularly it will be run with regular user privileges.

Windows 8.1 Metro Applications not functioning over VPN
Has anyone been able to resolve this in a corporate environment? We are not looking for loopback exemptions with fiddler, but rather a secure method to configure metro applications to use a proxy. If we manually set the proxy configuration, it
works fine but of course breaks connectivity off VPN. I've configured a pac file as this >
function FindProxyForURL(url, host)
if ((isPlainHostName(host) ||
dnsDomainIs(host, "corporatewebsite.com")) &&
!localHostOrDomainIs(host, "corporatewebsite1.com") &&
!localHostOrDomainIS(host, "corporatewebsite2.com") &&
!localHostOrDoaminIs(host, "corporatewebsite3.com"))
alert("This connection is going direct.")
return "DIRECT";
else{
alert("This connection is going through proxy.")
return "PROXY proxyaddress.com:9400";
When I configure a pac file under automatic settings in Internet Explorer, websites load correctly both internal and external. When loading metro applications, internet connectivity fails. I've also noticed that
netsh winhttp show shows that I'm still configured direct connection.
If I open fiddler and enable exemptions for Win8 metro apps, they work fine, but of course this 1) blows security 2) makes it very difficult to manage, especially 3rd party apps.
Any ideas? Has anyone solved this? Every post I've looked at has very little response back from Microsoft as to a proper configuration for this. Thanks guys.
RyanHi,
This is a continual problem indeed. As far as I know, there is still no a effective solution with APP network during some VPN connected.
While, Untill now, if you need to set proxy for Store APP separately, you can make setting through Group Policy.

Adobe Acrobat as a component of the application in Windows 8 in Metro Style
Hello
I am making an application under Windows 8 in Metro Style.
I try to include in my application PDF-reader.
How can I use Adobe Reader for this purpose.
If I have to buy a license, I'm ready to do it.Unfortunately, due to limitations of Win8 Metro, you can’t use Adobe Reader in that way.
If you need a PDF viewer/reader component for Win8, you’ll need to license our “Adobe Reader Mobile SDK”. -

The computer is brand new HP.
Windows 8.1 pro with media center
processor Intel i7-4700mq - 12gig ram -64bit
Full windows touch support with 10 touch points
The computer is connecting to a 2012 Server hosted on Microsoft's Azure platform. Trying to access applications hosted by this server with Remote Desktop Web services. The computer can RDP using just the mstsc.exe to other computers and to the server with
no problem.
The computer presents the following msg box Body: Remote Desktop Connection has stopped working. I have tried the following to resolve this and narrow the scope:
-Created a new user account for the computer with admin rights, rebooted and logged in as the new user.
-Tried a different user account for the portal, that does work. The user does not show up as connected.
-All MS updates were loaded.
-Added these changes to the registry to keep alive the connection: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Terminal Server Gateway\Transports\Rpc-----HttpKeepAliveTimeout=dword:00000001
And HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Terminal Server Client----RDGClientTransport=dword:00000001
Loaded this update http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2919394/EN-US
-Removed all printers
-Removed Antivirus
-Added the server to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Terminal Server Client\Default
-Disabled everything in MSCONFIG startup
-Ran sfc /scannow as administrator - no integrity violations
Any suggestions? -

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.
For example:
<configuration>
<system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>
When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

If you only add one file into the excluded files and locations, does this error still appear?
Could you reproduce this error on another system?

JVM will not load completely; application fails to launch.
Hello everyone,
I am facing a rather strange problem -
I am trying to launch a Java (Swing) application installed on a Windows Vista box. When I run the application, nothing happens. Then I tried launching the jar file on the command line using the java -verbose command to see if I could get more info. I could see the files being loaded, e.g
+[Loaded java.lang.Object from shared objects file]+
+[Loaded java.io.Serializable from shared objects file]+
+[Loaded java.lang.Comparable from shared objects file]+
+[Loaded java.lang.CharSequence from shared objects file]+
+[Loaded java.lang.String from shared objects file]+
+[Loaded java.lang.reflect.GenericDeclaration from shared objects file]+
+[Loaded java.lang.reflect.Type from shared objects file]+
+[Loaded java.lang.reflect.AnnotatedElement from shared objects file]+
+[Loaded java.lang.Class from shared objects file]+
+[Loaded java.lang.Cloneable from shared objects file]+
+[Loaded java.lang.ClassLoader from shared objects file]+
+....+
and so on.
The problem is that the VM just stops abruptly after running for a few seconds (with no exceptions), before it actually begins loading any application files.
Has anyone seen this behavior before? Any reason why this is happening?
I appreciate any help on this.
Thanks! :)

You could try pressing Ctrl-Break to print out a stack trace of running threads, and examine or submit it to the application's developers. -
Hi all
I've got a error msg when try to generate a report using Cisco history report tool:

User tried samething on other PC, it working fine.
only on user' own PC and only choose this report, error appears.

then tried https://supportforums.cisco.com/docs/DOC-6209 - doesn't work
attached the log file.
thanks.wenqianyu wrote:From the log file:Looks like you get a Login Window.Error message showed up after username/password be enteredThere is an error in the log: Error happened in comparing UCCX version and HRC versionYou may need to do a clean uninstall, download the Historical report from the server, and install it again on the PC.Does this only happen to one PC or to every PC with this application?Wenqian
I have completely uninstalled the HRC, and download from server install again -- still doesn't work with exactly same error.
this matter only happens on this PC, when user try same thing on other PC, it works.
so i think it not relate to server or account. -

Thing is, I don't think it is a PowerPivot issue because many people in the office use PowerPivot and they all receive the same error message.
We are all running on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit.

Cannot install AIR 2.0.4.13090 sidecar application on Windows 7 64 bit
Our team is experiencing consistent failure to install our AIR-developed application on Windows 7 64 bit. It fails to install, but apparently eventually can be installed only after a complete uninstallation of AIR and subsequent install attempts are made.
The following suggestion from http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/403/kb403150.html has also been tried, but errors persist:
Installing an AIR application displays the error message: "Sorry an error has occurred. The application could not be installed. Try installing it again. If the problem persists, contact the application author." (Windows Vista / Windows 7)
This error may occur during installation if the user has turned off User Account Control (UAC) operating system feature and is a standard or restricted user. From Control Panel, Open UAC and enable it. A reboot maybe required, once complete, re-try the installation.
The error messages are as follows:
Name of Our Application
Sorry, an error has occurred.
An error occurred while updating the application. Try updating it again. If the problem persists, contact the application author.
Error #0
Sorry, an error has occurred.
The application could not be installed because the installer file is damaged. Try obtaining a new installer from the application author.
This is a boxed product which is slated to ship very soon. The QA team is rejecting the builds because of this issue, which puts the entire project in jeopardy. Timely help is appreciated.
Here is a sanitized, excerpted section from the end of the install log (it is extremely long):

Let me restate the issue:
We have a AIR 2.0.4.13090 sidecar application. Installing the application for the very first time seems to work. Any uninstall or update after that runs into issues on the problematic Windows 7 64 bit machine. The installer logs all point the finger to Windows Installer having problems writing to the temp directory.
We've gone through many, many things trying to resolve this, including resetting administrative access to the temp directory and flushing the temp directory out entirely. I'm reporting this news secondhand, so it's not possible for me to directly relate the exact measures taken, step-by-step. The ONLY thing that reliably worked for running and installing updates on this AIR application was the following:
1) Create a new administrative level user.
2) Log in with that user.
3) Disable firewalls.
4) Run the updater.
5) Log back in as normal user, delete temporary user.
if the user account created in step 1 is not deleted in step 5 and is used to attempt a further update or uninstall, it will fail. This seems to tell me that AIR is able to utilize the temp folder via Windows Installer correctly only once. After that, it dirties this directory somehow and is unable to use/write to it, and subsequent uninstalls/updates fail with error 0.
Again, the failure all show msi issues writing to the temp directory. They result in an "Error 0" alert dialog in AIR. -
Saving files for metro apps in Windows 8/8.1 when printing
Hi,
I have a query regarding saving files for metro apps Windows 8/8.1.
Metro apps saves the file automatically to the Document folder when we print.
But I would like to save the files into a recommened folder like C:\users\tmp\
Please suggest me, is there a way to save the files to a particular folder for metro apps in Windows 8/8.1.
Thanks in Advance
Regards
Toshik12As far as I know (and I may be wrong), there's no built-in file saving when printing documents. How are you confirming that?
You can save the file anywhere you want, as long as the user chooses the folder location using the FolderPicker.

If my reply answers your question, please mark this post as answered.
NOTE: If I ask for code, please provide something that I can drop directly into a project and run (including XAML), or an actual application project. I'm trying to help a lot of people, so I don't have time to figure out weird snippets with undefined
objects and unknown namespaces. -
So with three separate builds of WTP I've run the PowerShell command to remove Metro/Modern/Universal/Windows Apps. With each build, it also removes the Start Menu. In the thread below, an MS Support person mentioned that that command was only for Windows
8.x and shouldn't be run on WTP. What? Then why is that command still available? And, why will it remove some Metro/Modern/Universal/Windows Apps, but not others? Are they marked as System required? Why isn't the Start Menu marked as System required? You'd
think that the start menu would be pretty important.

So, with the start menu being an XAML app, how do I safely remove ALL Metro/Modern/Universal/Windows Apps without removing the Start Menu? I have no use for them and don't want them on my computer. Period. There has to be some command like the one we used
in Windows 8.x that will allow use to remove ALL Metro/Modern/Universal/Windows Apps without removing the Start Menu.
Don't give an answer like "just right-click and uninstall". That doesn't work for all of these things, and do you know how long it takes to do that for all of those silly things? Too long! That's also not practical for an Enterprise desktop. It's
also not practical to leave all of that junk on the desktop, so don't suggest that either.
DanThe problem with PowerShell and all of those scripts is that those particular scripts require a lot of typing, or copy and paste, or having to figure out where all of those apps are stored and then insert their convoluted names into the script. For
me, scripting is like programming. I have no desire to be a programmer/developer.
I just want an option in Programs and Features to be able to turn these "features" off. We were able to do it in previous versions of Windows. If we didn't want Internet Games, we uncheck the box. If we don't want our users to be able to print
documents over the Internet, we uncheck the box. And so on down the line for any other "feature" we didn't want our enterprise users to have.
Or, we could turn those features off using the System Image Manager. Now we have to write some convoluted script with even more convoluted commands for even more convoluted names for things we don't want.
The easier script in Windows 8.x was just get-appxpackages -online | remove-appxpackages. That removed the majority of the apps for an individual user. The remove-appxprovisionedpackage command, with the convoluted name of the app, would remove them from
the hard drive - one app at a time, but that doesn't work in Windows 10.
So, they came up with a DISM command, but that doesn't work in Windows 10 either. I should say that with my limited developer skills I haven't found a way to make it work.
Again, I have no desire to be a developer/scripter. They are the same thing in my book. I'm a systems engineer. I do operating systems, not write applications.

So, I guess there is no real answer to this question.
