Excessive fan noise

hello! Does the iMac G5 typically run pretty loud (noisy fan)? Just wondering because a friend has also bought a new iMac and thinks mine is louder. (it's not constantly running a fan, just when applications like iTunes or Garageband are up...)

Richard -
Thanks for the help! However the mystery of the super RPM fan is none of what you mention. First, I don't even have Classic installed! Second, the cpu was running an average of 5% of capacity! Third, the vents seem fine - what gives?!?! Do I have an abnormal cpu that you could fry eggs on? This is ridiculous! It seems insane that the fan would need to cool this G5 when all its running is the Finder.
Within five minutes of starting up from a cold computer (it was off for several hours) the cpu is at around 140 degrees. The fan hovers around 2700rpm. If I open things like System Preferences, the fan can move higher and the cpu can jump 5 degrees or more in a second or two! If I open Safari and play a movie trailer, the cpu goes above 150 degrees and the fan jumps to around 3100 rpm. At this point unless I turn off everything and just let it sit there the fan and cpu sort of stay at 140 degrees + with the fan around 2800 rpm. But what's odd is that with nothing more than regular processes running, it will eventually creep up and up to 4400 rpm for the fan!
Is this cpu abnormally hot? Do I have an inefficient/broken cooling system? Can I change the fan? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

  • Excessive Fan Noise in Mac Pro (Late 2008)

Starting in October of 2009, at about one year of age, my Mac Pro started cycling through periods of excessive fan noise: the fan goes from quiet/inaudible to so loud that I cannot hear talking on the radio in the room.
    Re-set the PRAM.
    Re-set the SMC.
Ran HW Test (Full test) and got the following: 4sns/1/40000000:tcbh -127.500
    Called Apple Support.
Re-ran Hardware Test showed no problem.
Did nothing more. Machine seemed fine.
In January of 2010, the problem returned.
Ran HW test (Full test) and got the following: 4sns/1/40000000:tcbh -127.500
Per instructions from Apple over the phone, I took the Mac Pro to a "Genius" at the local Apple Store "Genius Bar."
The "Genius" booted the Mac Pro on the store network (while I waited) and got the same error message. The "Genius" said he would order some parts and install them.
    Left machine.
Received call one day later from another "Genius." He said the first "Genius" was wrong. They've been running the machine continuously with no error message at all. (BTW, he treated me like an idiot, though he clearly didn't have all the facts in the store's own record about the machine. Typical 20-something IT kid.) After some argument, he agreed to run more tests. Received another call fro yet another "Genius" telling me the machine was OK.
    I picked up the machine.
The fans continue their behavior, BUT HW test (full test) now shows NO error.
At rope's end. Clearly Apple will be of no assistance, despite the warranty I paid for.
The machine cannot be used in the same room as I as I cannot talk on the phone, etc., with the fans running so loud, which they appear to do every 30 to 60 minutes.
    Any ideas?
    Some thoughts:
The problems started not long after installing 10.6. Coincidence?
I am not sure, but I think the fans go nuts whenever I use iTunes or Quicktime. I have not tested this and I could be wrong, but whenever I have those programs closed, the fans seem to settle down.
If no one has any ideas, I'm thinking of selling the machine and getting something else, as it is not useful "as is."

There are reports of the new MacPros having heat issues rendering audio (QuickTime/ iTunes).
Seems to be a hardware configuration issue not a software problem.

  • Excessive fan noise after 10.7 install

After the installation of 10.7 Lion, I am getting excessive fan noise... it keeps turning on, then off.  InterCheck seems to be the cuplrit, what ever that is.

I don't know what InterCheck is, but expect your fans to come on and the system to work hard for 30-60 minutes after the upgrade.  Spotlight will likely re-index your files.
It should calm down after an hour or so.

  • Excessive fan noise when iChatting?

Usually when engaged in multi-party iChat, the fan comes on and makes the audio spotty and/or just causes disruptive background noise.  Does anyone know why?  What can I do to stop it?

    HI,
You could try limiting the bandwidth in iChat.
iChat Menu > Preferences > Video section > Bandwidth Limit drop down.
    Set this to 500kbps
    It has several outcomes.
    1) the Bandwidth os capped and this can smooth out some video with Buddies where the speed of internet is massively different.
    2) It can help if the ISP varies the service a lot
    3) 500kbps is higher than the listed 384kbops Minimum (UP and Download) for 4 way Video Chats
Limiting this to this level will reduce the need to fill the Bandwidth (It's a rough description of what iChat does - it grabs a much as it can, within some limits) and works at a lower rate.
You can notice this in the Connection Doctor (Video Menu) during a  live Chat.
The Bandwidth will be reported as less which will also tend to reduce the Frame Rate  (if your upload is higher then the 500kbps).
The less the computer has to work at producing Video the lower the processor has to work.
At certain points which you cannot control, directly iChat will reduce the number of pixels in a  frame  which also reduces the load (However, strangely, you may see your Frame Rate go up as the Computer can produce smaller pics/Frames more quickly).
    The Max pic size is 640 X 480 in iChat 2 through 5  (4:3 ratio)  (0.3Mp)
The next size down  is 480 X 320
In Lion  (iChat 6) you are using a HD camera at 16:9 ratio
At the highest setting iChat can manage this is in excess of 1.3Mp to a frame.
    Also don't play Host.
Allow rthe person with the fastest Connection Upload and download be Host.
It can also help if all parties use the same Bandwidth Limit.
Some very fast can send you data faster than iChat  and your service can deal with it.
This cause iChat extra work as it drop frames and tries to keep the Audio in Sync.
At certain points it cannot manage the Audio Sync and it will drop the Audio.
It has always done this since iChat 2 but was less noticeable due to a Limit in Quicktime Settings and being 1-1 chats.

  • Cpu fan noise

Hello! Today I installed windows 10, and suddenly my cpu fan is running pretty loud. I also changed my video card from a sapphire amd radeon 6950 to a gigabyte amd radeon r7-240. I installed the graphics card with windows 7 and I did not have this fan noise from my cpu fan, but when I upgraded, I check the temperatures and its running at almost 80 degrees celcius without doing absolutely anything. All my drivers are up to date. what could be the problem? thank you in advance, Edgard

    Hi parikhharsh86,
    Welcome to Sony Community!
We're sad to hear about this. Upgrading to Windows 10 might show issues on your laptop, like in your case it's excessive fan noise, that is why we suggest to the users to wait for Sony to provide the drivers and software for your laptop.
There is no patch for this issue yet and the only solution that i will recommend is to revert back to your previous operating system. Please click on this link for more information abour Windows 10 upgrade.

  • Is it Hardrive Noise or Fan Noise?  How to tell?

I am trying to work out some problems on my desktop G5 iMac. I either have excessive fan noise, or HD noise.
How do I tell the difference? Not certain the difference in their sounds.
    Jon

    Hi DadOfSixJon-
Exactly which iMac do you have?
If the noise is fairly constant and you have an iMac that you can open and you are brave enough to do so you could open it up and disconnect the power lead to the hard drive. Turn it back on and see if you hear the noise with the drive disabled thus.

  • Probook 6360b: Permanent fan noise

    Hi all,
I have bought my Probook 6360b a few days ago and I like the performance and the sturdiness of the body.
However, the constantly buzzing fan is annoying me now already.
    The quick facts:
    - I have disabled 'Fan always on while on AC Power' in the bios (bios version F.03 (27 Apr 2011))
    - CPU usage is <5%, CPU temperature is < 100F / 38C
    - Power consumption is 8-9W (according to 'HP Power Assistent')
    - SSD hard drive (i.e. no hard drive noise)
Basically, the fan is pretty silent; however I am working in a (very) quiet environment where I can constantly hear the permanently buzzing fan, which has become annoying after just a few hours.
Is the permanent low fan noise considered 'normal' for the Probook 6360b?
If so, is it possible to reduce the noise even further or switch off the fan at times of low CPU usage?
Thank you in advance for your help!
    Chris

    Hello RobotWong
Welcome to the HP Forums I hope you enjoy your experience!
I am sorry to hear that the fan in your HP Probook 6360b has become as loud as you have described. I have a couple of ideas to assist with this issue,
First, this is probably the most important part of my post is to ensure you are not overheating. To do this I am posting the HP Support document: Reducing Heat Inside the PC to Prevent Overheating. This document was designed to help prevent overheating, and according to the document one of the symptoms of overheating is "Fans inside the computer become louder because they are spinning faster to remove the heat". Be sure to review this document and ensure this is not the case.
Second, I am providing you with another HP Support document: HP ProBook 6360b Notebook PC Maintenance and Service Guide. If you refer to page 74 you will see the part number for the fan as well as instructions on how to replace the fan. The fan can be ordered from the HP Parts Store. Now I am not saying you need to replace the fan (it is an option), but I would advice cleaning out the Thermal Paste and replacing it with a good quality Thermal Paste. This can get contaminated with dirt and dust and not glide as smoothly over time.
I believe if you follow the advice above you will resolve your excessive fan noise. Thank you for bringing this issue to the HP Forums. Have a great day!
Please click the "Thumbs Up" on the bottom right of this post to say thank you if you appreciate the support I provide!
Also be sure to mark my post as “Accept as Solution" if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others who face the same challenge find the same solution.

  • IMac G4 Fan noise very loud, excessive speed

    any suggestions or solutions?

Hello I just recently bought a imac like a month ago but it's starting to make this fan noise when it starts up..
Please if someone knows what's going or how can I solve this problem tell me!

  • My 2008 Macbook Pro makes a loud fan noise.

    Hello -
I bought my 15" macbook pro back in October 2008. I was very happy with my purchase due to the machine's performance. But over the past year I have noticed an increase in the fan noise. It almost sounds like it's hitting against something at a very high speed, hense this irregular fan noise. The noise also increases drastically when I am working on Photoshop or InDesign. I also partitioned my hard-drive to hold windows so I can work on AutoCad.....noise increases also as I work on my machine.
Why is this happening? Could this loud fan noise damage any internal component to the machine? Should I bring it in to Apple immediately?
    Thank you!

Some of the applications that you mention are somewhat CPU intensive which creates heat and results in fan speed increase and hence additional noise (to state the obvious).  However if you are experiencing excessive noise when CPU loads are modest it could be that your fans are failing as all mechanical devices eventually will or you may have 'schmutz' inside that is the cause of the unwanted noise.
I suggest you open the MBP and see if there is any dust in the fans that may very well be affecting their performance.  After 4 years, this is not an uncommon situation and it could be the solution to the problem.
If not, then you may consider getting replacements from iFixit or Powerbook Medic and replace them your self.  It is not rocket science in this instance.  If you suffer from chronic fingerfumbilitis, then have the Apple store do it for you.
    Ciao.

  • No video, high fan noise on startup, for the THIRD TIME

For the third time in slightly less than three years, I have encountered the same crippling problem with my iBook G4 (1 GHz, June 2004 vintage). In essence, the screen will abruptly go black while in use (not screensaver) and no amount of keyboard/mouse activity will reactivate the display. If I power off by holding down the power button then restart, the screen stays black and the fans come on full speed.
Despite a bit of confusion on the details, this sounds like the problem described on the webpages below. In essence the Danish government has issued a finding that there is a design flaw which allows excessive logic board flexing, which in turn causes logic board failure.
This is, as I said above, the third time I have encountered this failure in less than three years. Worse, they seem to be coming closer together. The first was after about 1.5 years, the second 9 months later, and now seven months after the second repair. Since I didn't get Apple Care, paying for a third repair out of pocket would bring my repair bill up to the cost of a new iBook.
I do not abuse my iBook, and since the second repair I have been very careful with my iBook. Does anyone have any suggestions on getting Apple to acknowlege the problem or who I can appeal to? Apple's website doesn't seem to offer any e-mail tech support options and I'd rather not sit on hold for an age (again) if it can be avoided. While I don't want to abandon my iBook or Apple, I may be forced to if I can't rely on the hardware.
    Thanks
    Mark

iBook G4 1GHz (early 2004)   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   blank screen, high fan noise on start

Well it doesn't sound like the Danish power problem since it will start up.
The ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 4x AGP graphics processor chips in these iBooks have been problematic. Usually it's the reball problem and it can be reballed for ~ $78. I've done 4 this year and they work just great. A cheap way to get nice laptops. If they respond to the "shim fix" then reballing will work.
A more troubling problem is with the 9200 chip itself. My reballer says that this chip is in itself the cause of some of these problems. He knows it since it's also used in IBMs, Compaqs and many other laptops and he's seen a lot of failures. My only failed reball was a 9200. I have a line on a replacement board or finding the chip in a broken PC.

  • My iMac monitor makes a "fan" noise that won't shut off. What is and how do I shut it off

My iMac monitor is making a "fan" noise. What is it and what do I do to shut it off?

Fans run to stablize temperatures on your iMac. The fans cannot be turned off.
If you think the fans run excessively, try Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

  • Why is my Mac Book Pro making a lot of fan noise?

My Mac Book Pro suddenly began making a lot of fan noise, I did not install any software nor have I been using it excessively. I don't know what to do to make it silent again! Please help. Thanks in advance.

Down load from the Internet and install iStat pro.  It will record the internal temperatures and fan speeds of the MBP.  Also open Activity Monitor and set it to show 'All Processes' and '% Cpu' to display values from high to low.  When your MBP makes the noise, take screen shots of both and post them for evaluation.
    ciao.

  • Problems with new Yoga 2 Pro (battery, fan noise, yellow, screen orientation, on-screen keyboard)

I purchased the Yoga Pro 2 on Thursday October 17. I love the computer for so many reasons, (especially since it replaces my 4 year old Compaq that was 6.5lbs!) however, I am also having a few issues with it.
It is the i7/8GB/256GB model from BestBuy. I am experiencing the same yellow issue as is mentioned by many on here. I didn't realize it, though, until reading these forums and then comparing to my old computer and my ipad and iPhone. A little disappointed, though it looks like Lenovo may be working on a solution.
But the real reason I originally came to look at this forum is because of 2 things: my fan and battery.
The fan (on the right side of the keyboard) is always on! I didn't expect this, and am wondering if mine is a lemon or if others are noticing the same thing. It's pretty noticeable, especially in a quiet room. I was showing off my new computer to a friend and the very first thing she said was that it was loud! She was using a MacBook pro, which wasn't making any noise at all.
The second thing is the battery... I am attaching 4 photos all taken within a few minutes of each other. If you cant see them, they are all of the battery meter on my screen. I am listing the time of day (to show how much time passed), percent remaining, and time remaining:
    10:04  (88%)  306 hr 15 min
    10:05  (88%)  8 hr 48 min
    10:09  (86%)  4 hr 54 min
    10:29  (81%)  5 hr 12 min
I feel like my computer just cant make up its mind!!
Another issue I had... I turned on my computer to show it to a friend (same friend who said it was noisy) and the screen image wouldn't flip when in any of the modes. This means I showed her the stand mode with an upside down image. Even in tablet mode I couldn't get it to flip. I turned the computer off and then on again, and luckily it decided to work, but it was frustrating, and I hope it's not something that becomes an issue.
Also, when I have the computer in tablet mode, the keyboard automatically pops up when I click somewhere to type... but this doesn't happen in stand mode or tent mode. Is this normal? I would have thought that the keyboard would appear in any of those modes, since the real keyboard is not accessible in any of them. And of course now that I am testing it out while writing this, none of the modes (including tablet) is having the keyboard come on screen. Of course, I know I can always choose the icon on the task bar to bring up the keyboard, but it would be nice if the computer did it automatically since it knows there is no other keyboard accessible in those modes. Is this an issue anybody else has had?
I really do enjoy using this computer, but some of these issues really need to get worked out if I am going to keep it. I'd love to hear if anyone is experiencing anything similar, and if there are any good fixes!

I just got a Lemontine Yoga 2 Pro i5/8GB/256GB from lenovo.com and the silver one from BestBuy in the same configuraiton.  The silver one has no issues except for the crazy number of hours remaining on the battery which is fine, doesn't bother me.  The fan noise is very quiet, and you can only hear it if you put your ear up to the vents in a quiet room.
Now the Clementine one...It was heating up pretty good.  I put my ear to it on many occasions and can hear nothing at all, the fan is either missing LOL or doesn't work.  I had an issue where I left the thing on for 4 hours, but sleep is configured after 5 hours.  When I tried to use it, it showed me the screen brielfy, then blank.  Tried hard reset, called Support, nothing.  Support says its dead.  Ok, an hour later, it turned on.  I'm guessing it was too hot and was in some mode to protect itself, like a smartphone that is left out in the sun for some time, it won't power on till its cooled down.
I'm still in process of trying to get a hold of Lenovo to swap it, but since they no longer sell this configuration, I doubt they'll be able to get me a new one.
The silver one from BestBuy us solid though, love it, best in class in my opinion...actually got it from Future Shop sorry...from Canada, but they're essentially the same store.
