My Macbook wont start up! I get a exclamation point folder icon! Can anyone help?
Any more details? My first response, (do not perform until you post more details to the board) would be to install the Leopard install disk and repair permissions via the DVD Install Disk. Did you perform an upgrade to a previous system or purchase it preloaded? Any programs/software recently installed? Any 3rd party utilities? Font packages? Others will not be able to respond without more details. What were you doing right before this happened? Are you using bootcamp? When do you see the exclamation point in the startup process?

I have a 20g Ipod and I am having lots of problems. Whenver I press a button it shows the apple logo followed by an exclamation point and folder icon. It ends with sounds of a clicking or HD whirring. Also, when I plug it into the computer, itunes prompts me with a message saying "Itunes has detected an Ipod in recovery mode. You must restore this Ipod before it can be used with Itunes". When I chose the option to restore it, it begins, but does not finish restoring it. It then gives me a message: "The Ipod "ipod" could not be restored. An unkown error occured (1418)". I also tried to restore by doing the following, but this failed as well:
Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.

Exclamation point and folder and nothing else
Hi... I have an older 20 g iPod. I dropped it (only 3 feet but hard surface) last week and after that it malfunctioned and then stopped functioning. I have tried the reset several times without success. My Mac does not recognize it either in the information about this Mac or the disk utility or the iPod updater. I would love to be able to revive it but had assuimed it dead. I can get an apple on the screen when I do a reset and the battery icon shows that it is charging ... and then the exclamation point with the folder comes up.

3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
For Window computer
Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod

b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.

If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"

You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.

In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. Have I tried this myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

Exclamation Point & Duplicate App Icon - iTunes App Screen
I just did a sync of my iPhone 3G. In iTunes in the Apps screen on my PC some of the App icons have been duplicated and there is an exclamation point in front of them. So:
1) What does this mean?
2) How do I correct it with minimum muss & fuss?
**Please note: due to previous bad encounters with 0S4 I *will not* be installing it, so please don't suggest that. Furthermore, since iTunes 9.2 will not function properly without OS4, I am using iTunes 9.1.1. (See my previous post regarding issues with iTunes 9.2 & my 3G iPhone.)

~TT~Right clicking on the duplicate with the exclamation point brings up a pull down menu that says:
- Get Info
- Show in Windows Explorer
- Delete
Get info = The Application "name of application" could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" It then brings up the location if you continue on.
Meanwhile it now seems that MOST of the duplicate App icons have this duplicate with the !, while a couple just seem to be duplicates.
Again, I'm wondering as to the cause of this & how to correct it without having to do major stuff.

Exclamation point over thumbnail in iPhoto
When I click on a thumbnail to enlarge it, an exclamation point appears over it blacking the photo out. These are photos I have made and imported to iPhoto. How can I get rid of the exclamation point to edit the photos? Thanks for your help.
No, I do not remember doing anything in Finder having to do with iPhoto or photos.
I did try the re-build as you suggested but nothing was changed - I continue to get the ! when I click on a photo.
I do have another iPhoto Library in which I am working and clicking on a photo in that library enlarges it. (I the library I want to use with iPhoto Library Manager.)
So, I think I'll just trash the library that is giving me problems and build on the Library that is working. I have the original photos on disk and it will only take time to do the imports.

Cant seem to restore (exclamation point with folder)
Hopefully someone can help me. A couple days ago I plugged my ipod into my car adapter and all I got was an exclamation point with a folder. I have gone through all the troubleshooting tips and am still stuck. I have tried holding down the menu and select buttons and have tried the select and play buttons but all I can seem to do is get it into disk mode- OK to disconnect. So I then tried to restore it. I downloaded the latest version of ipod updater but when I hook the ipod up to my computer, the updater doesn't recognize it and reads "plug in an ipod to update it"
I am in disk mode when I plug in the ipod but no dice on my computer recognizing it. I tried 2 other USB ports on the back of my computer with no luck as well.
When I plug my ipod into the computer, the ipod goes from ok to disconnect....to....do not disconnect but the computer cant read it. Any help? I believe I have tried all the troubleshooting tips. Red exclamation points over plug ins!
My previously recorded tracks now won't play back and there are little red circles with exclamation points on the plug ins( like the delay and compressor etc. plug ins)? how do I get rid of these? I'm using Logic Pro X HELP

When the iPod is turned on I get the logo for a second then the message "www.apple.com/support/ipod"
The battery is charged.
I tried to restore, after several tries it appeared to complete but no change.
The update option was not even available to try but restore was.
From reading here I was able to do some checks and some things seem wrong if I am seeing it correctly
HDD SCAN REG1 FAIL
KEY TEST FAIL
I don't know what those actually mean or if there are more tests I can do. It's a pia to get to the screen at all.
The iPod was not hooked to the computer during these tests.
Any suggestions? Or is it time to send it to Apple for re-education?
I think I have about90 days left on my warranty and I have not done anything that should void it like dropping or anything.

You may need to plug and unplug your iPod with the computer for several attempts, and switching around Format and Restore, and hope out of sudden, it will get recognized.

“Then I cam across this special Diganostics Mode that you can get to by resetting and then while the Apple is showing pressing the Select and backwards keys simultaneously. It bring up and weird Diagnostic utility witha a abunch of tests. Here is what I did
- I tried the 5in1 test and got and error on Firewire.
- I did the HDD R/W and surprisingly it passed.
- I went on to the HDD scan. This supposedly tkaes acouple of minute so I waited. I think 4-5 dots appeared then nothing. The iPod started to get hot. THe disk was spinning away. After a while the battery got very low. THis test chews up the battery. So I escaped out by resetting and went to connect it to a power source.
My USB was dangling out of my computer and I was too lazy to get the Firewire AC adapter thing going so I connected expecting the whole lockup thing with iTunes. Surprise. IT was recognized immediately and has been working like a champ. So go figure.

10. Let me ask you a question, if an iPod with no iPod software with it. When your connect it with a computer, what would happen?
Yeah, the computer will treat it as a fresh external hard disk, which will get force mounted, the computer will ask you to format the iPod. It does not really matter the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted iPod software on the iPod, after that the computer will recognize it.
Once it has been completed, eject your iPod, open the iPod updater and interestingly, you will able to do the Restore this time.
Base on the above, that's why I suggest Windows users who experience trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac machine or vice versa. PC computer will not recognize a Mac formatted iPod, but it will get mounted in an attempt to format your iPod.
11. Put your iPod in disk mode and plug with a computer, and have a boot of your computer using the Mac OS or XP startup disks, hope that your iPod will be seen on Mac's Disk utility and allow you to do a Erase there. Or, under the XP, you will be able to find your iPod there for you to do a Restore.
But, if none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired. You can arrange for service at the iPod Service Website.
I have just read an interesting solution about the Sad iPod, it does make sense but the warranty will be waived once you open the iPod, I would not do it myself as I am not good on doing this

Red exclamation point on desktop icons
After upgrading to Photoshop CS5 I noticed that many of my desktop icons (jpgs, pdfs) had a red circle with a white exclmation point and the system is running slow. I googled this and the only posts I could find relate to computers that use backup software, which I don't. I am posting it here because I noticed it right after the cS5 upgrade, although I cannot otherwise be sure the two are related. Ever heard of this? I made a little screen grab which follows.

I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.

Folder icon with exclamation point...and updater problems
So here's what has happened to me today:
I plugged my iPod into my computer(this is a computer WITHOUT iPod installed yet) to charge. In the meantime, I downloaded the latest iPod updater and iTunes. The first time I used the updater, it told me that there was an iPod service error. I followed some instructions on the apple support site..and The next time I tried, it told me that one or more applications were using the iPod. I knew this wasn't the case, because the only application open was the updater, and no antivirus software was currently running. So I took my iPod back to my laptop computer(DOES have iPod installed) and it also told me that one or more applications were using the iPod, even though there were no applications open.
So now I have a little folder with an exclamation point that tells me to go to the apple support site, which I have been to numerous times...I can put my iPod into disk mode which really doesn't help anyways...Then

so ive got some major ipod problems. cant get rid of sad ipod so i put into disk mode. then it changed to the exclamation point folder thingy. tried restoring it but my itunes either freezes up or doesnt show my ipod when i plug it in (whether its on disk mode or regular.) PLEASE HELP!!!!!!

4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
For Window computer
Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”

A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.

Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Ok... I am having serious iPod issues. Its an iPod mini 2nd gen, 6 GB. I dropped it while working out, and now all it shows is an icon of a folder and an exclamation point. I have tried everything except a restore, but I can't even get it to show up in iTunes or in Windows Explorer when I connect it to my computer, so I can't force it into disk mode or do a restore. It never had this problem before I dropped it. Is it forever dead? Is there any way to get my music off it even if it won't function anymore? I don't have the songs backed up on my computer. Help!

I'm having the same problems with mine, a 30G iPhoto. I plugged it into my computer and it didn't get recognized at all. I unplugged it and that's when the folder and exclamation point showed up. I have tried just about everything on these forums: reset, hold switch toggle, disc mode and several scans, even the smack on the hard surface (which worked last time I ran into a problem, which that time was the frown face.) The document linked above talks about restoring the iPod, but I can't get it to show up on iTunes, so that doesn't seem to be an option. I can force it into disc mode, but so far no luck with any of the options there.
Any other options? Is it worth taking in to Apple? Thanks for any and all help! -
Ipod keeps resetting itself with folder and exclamation point.
Well, I was listening to some music one day when my ipod just shut off on me.
I reset it because it wont turn back on and it shows me the apple emblem and then a folder with an exclamation point and then shuts off. It will do this as long as I am willing to stand there and keep pushing any button.
At one point and time it would actually make an audible spinning sound and then come to a halt and repeat that over and over again.
I tried charging it and nothing changed.
I tried hooking it up to the computer and the computer does not even recognize it being connected anymore.
Could a bad/corrupted song possibly ruin the ipod? Anything suggestions as to what my problem may be?
