Executable front panel can't be restored, but continues to run

I have an executable that gets in a state where I can't get the front panel window to display.  It was running for a couple of weeks without any problem.  When the problem occurs and I click on the Windows taskbar the focus seems to shift to that executable, but no front panel window comes up.  Also, if I try right clicking on the taskbar I don't get the context menu.  I've tried going into the task manager and switching to this application, but that doesn't work either.  The task was built with Labview 9.01 and is running under Windows XP.
Anyone seen a problem like this?
Cindy

Without seeing your code it is difficult to give you any specific advice. I have given you th emost common things that happen in an application that result in the type of behavior you are describing. Any other suggestions would require seeing the code.
In light of that, is your state machine building arrays dynamically? Are you certain that your state machine itself is correct? Can it be getting into some mode where you no longer process the state that contains the event structure? If you don't call that state you will not process any of the events. I suspect that you are getting into some state that is causing you to stay stuck in one or a very few states without getting out and allowing you to call the state that has your event structure. Check all of your state transitions to make sure they are handling whatever decisions to determine the next state are correct.

  • Hi. I want to build a GUI based on several windows appearing following a certain sequence. How can i create different windows in the same VI? Also, i want the front panel of a subvi to appear when i run, how can i enable this. Thanks

    Having several windows appear ...

    Hi,
You can't create several windows for one VI. But you can use the "Tab Control" and change tab's in the program. Or you can use sub VI's and show ther front panels.
To show the front panel of a sub VI you have to open the VI you want to show and select "File->VI Properties". In the VI Properties window select Category "Window Appearance" and click Customize...
In the Customize Window Appearence window, here you can set a number of attributes for how the window will appear, select "Show front panel when called" and "Close afterwards if originally closed" click OK and OK and save the VI, done.
Now the VI front panel will appear then you use it as a sub VI.

Hi,?Can I have speakers (2.0 Creative I-Trique 2200) and headphones with mic (Sennheiser PC6)?connected at the same time to the back of the card? The question is related to SB X-FI XtremeGamer Fatalty?(without front panel), as I assume with a front panel it wouldn't be an issue. I'm just trying to find out if the connections on the back of the card allow for that? Thanks,

More than possible. Start with plugging the headphones into the front out jack and the speakers in the rear out. Then it is just a matter of changing the speaker settings and a change in CMSS. When using the headphones set it to headphones, and when you want to use the speakers set it to 4., and in the CMSS settings adjust the fron/rear balance to all rear.

I changed my wrt54gs from unsecured to secure by changing the wireless > wireless security > to security mode: WPA personal, the wpa algorithms is set to TKIP, i set up a password in the shared key area and the group key is set to 3600.  I saved the changes and now i can connect with the password with a macbook pro as well as with a ipod touch but i cant connect with a laptop running windows vista.  I would get an error saying unable to connect, funny thing is though  i am connect (and it is the correct router, not a neighbors) but it says connected with limited access. I tried to run diagnostics and repair but to no avail.  Any thoughts on what to door is limited access ok?

    Try this :
Click Start >> Control Panel >> Network and Sharing Center >> Manage Wireless Networks, here remove all the networks present and close the Window...
Click on Connect to a Network and try to re-connect to your Network, it should ask for your Network Key/Password, enter the correct password/network key and click Connect...
It should connect...Once you are connected you should restart the computer, it should connect to Internet...

  • Able to interact with a cRIO remote front panel from one computer but not another

I have a cRIO application that publishes a remote front panel for monitoring and control of the application. From one PC (Win7 & firefox) I can see, interact and control the cRIO through the published remote front panel. From a second PC, also Win7, I can see and monitor the cRIO's state, but the remote panel that is opened does not allow for any interaction and this is true whether I'm using IE, FF or Chrome as the browser. When either PC is connected to the cRIO, it is via a dedicated Ethernet link and only the cRIO and the one PC are on that network. For this two-device private network, the PC is always at address 192.168.1.1 while the cRIO always uses 192.168.84.199 (port 8000).
The firewall rules on both PCs are setup to allow all incoming and outgoing programs/ports/protocols to be used between these two IP addresses.
Both PC's have up-to-date LabVIEW development systems installed on them (which more or less guarantees they have the minimum require LV runtime needed to see and use a remote front panel).
What might be different on the PC that view but cannot interact with the remote panel?

As far as I am aware - only one viewer of the remote front panel can control the panel at any time - the rest can only view.
As I tried to say in my original post, there was only one host physically connected to the private network at any given time (by virtue of the fact that the one Ethernet cable connection to the private network was being moved back & forth between the two hosts) so there was no way both hosts could be trying to control the cRIO at the same time. I even went so far at one point of restarting the cRIO while it was connected to the problem host to see if would render it functional, but it did not.
But I did not know that it was possible to do what you suggested, much less that there was a right-click context menu associated with a remote panel, so I tried it and it worked!    Thank you!

  • How can I create multiple front panels for a single block diagram?

    Hello,
I have developed a VI with multiple controls and indicators that needs to run on computers with screen resolutions ranging from 800x600 to 1680x1050. The problem I'm having is that the front panel does not properly scale for this range of resolutions by checking the options in the "VI properties" option. Is there a way to create multiple front panels of various sizes for my block diagram and programmatically select the appropriate front panel based on the screen resolution?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    See the attached Zip file.
I have two different front panels.  Open either one and run it.  They both call MainCode.vi which takes the references passed to it and register for events.  From there, it does all the work of the code you would have put in your front panel .vi.
This way each front panel can be laid out however you want for each screen resolution.

  • How to lock block diagram alone from editing leaving front panel for editing?

i want to lock block diagram from editing but front panel can be edited for creating controls, moving controls editing properties...

executables will be delivered to customer and they can create new vi and edit frontpanel and link tag through databinding. but i dont want them to open block diagram...
Natasftw is right - you seem confused about the difference.
If the customer can "create a new VI and edit frontpanel" then they have to have LabVIEW Development System.
If you give them an EXE, and they don't have the DevSys, then they can use your VIs, but not edit them or look at the code.
If they have the DevSys, then they can edit your VI and look at the code, UNLESS you protect it.
If you save a VI with protection (VI PROPERTIES - PROTECTION ) then you can LOCK it (user has to explicitly unlock it with an extra step), or you can PASSWORD PROTECT it (user has to explicitly unlock it by giving a password).  Either way requires the DevSys.
There is no situtation where one can edit the front panel without being able to edit the block diagram.

  • What is the most efficient way to have full access to the front panel on RT Labview?

I have a RT machine that needs to do its job and also port the front panel to an external machine over the network. What is the most efficient way to do it? Using as little of the RT time as possible but providing full functionality to the RT front panel.
So far I have been using it directly from Labview - running the VI on a remote (RT) and have the front panel on local Labview (WINDOWS). I know I can do it with also through WWW (not very happy with that though).
    LV2009 SP1.
    Thanks

Running a compiled executable on the RT target, rather than running it within the development environment, is probably slightly more efficient but limits you to the web interface.  If you're running within the LabVIEW environment, I doubt there's a noticeable difference in efficiency from the RT perspective between the web server and the LabVIEW front panel, although that's mostly a guess (I would expect the RT system to send identical data in each case, once the front panel is loaded).  Those are your only options in modern LabVIEW versions.  In LabVIEW 7.1 you could build an executable that acted as the front panel for an RT system, but that feature does not exist in recent versions.  However, a quick search turned up this document with code to approximately duplicate that behavior, perhaps it will work for you?

  • Front Panel Controller SubVI?

Here is the scenario, I have a main VI that uses an event structure to call various other SubVI's depending on what control is pressed and to update the front panel accordingly.  The front panel of the Main VI is a Tab Control with ~25 controls total.  As you can imagine, some controls should not be enabled until other events happen.  For example, I have a menu ring called "Report Type" of which you can choose 'HTML' or 'Send to Printer.'  Next to this ring is a boolean control called "Open in Browser?" , I want to only enable this boolean control only when "Report Type" is set to 'HTML.'   Likewise I want both the "Report Type" and "Open in Browser?" controls to be disabled if the user has not hit the "Download Data" control to get data from the RT Controller (otherwise there would be nothing to report.)
These are just a few examples of what I need to do, I have been adding 'Disabled' property nodes throughout my event cases but it is becoming very unwieldy and making my block diagram quite cluttered and hard to understand.  What I want to do is have a 'Front Panel Controller SubVI' of sorts, of which I define about 10 or so various states the front panel can be in and pass that state to the controller SubVI which in turn disables/enables controlls accordingly.  This idea sounds good but so far the implementation seems pretty bad.  I was hoping I could just make a cluster of control references and pass that into the SubVI but LabVIEW 8.2 doesn't seem to allow me to wrap up references in a cluster.  This has forced me to use VI Server to get the references.   What I've been able to come up with using VI Server works, but I can't believe its the most elegant solution.  Basically, for each of the possible states, I iterate over all the controls in the front panel and have a case structure for their Label Text which determins if that control should be enabled/disabled for the given state passed in.  Also, for some reason it seems that it is not grabbing references to ALL of my controls.  There is a menu ring control on the front panel that isn't in the Controls[] array.  I should mention that this particular Control already has a reference node created for it that gets passed to a SubVI, perhaps this is why its not found in the Controls[] array, but this doesn't seem to be very intuititve, or documetned for that matter.
    <a href="http://tinypic.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i37.tinypic.com/fjgwtv.gif" border="0" alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic"></a>

Thats a very good idea, although I'd probably want to put a case structure around the disable property node and have it only change value when the search array function does *not* return -1, otherwise I'll be disabling things I might want to maintain in an enabled state.
Just before I read your post, another thought came to me and that why use a SubVI, I could just use a parallel loop with queues to send back state information.  Since queues can be blocking, this would not negate my event structure.  I could combine the idea you gave me with this architecture.  Thanks

  • How do I programatically open a LabView Front panel?

I want to use a test stand variable (perhaps a sequence global) to control whether certain VIs open their front panels, and wait for subsequent operator interaction. Can I get there using the API and something like this:  "Step_TSInfoProp.TSInfo_StepAdditions.LVStep_ModulePathProp" ?
I tried passing a boolean to the VI and then having it optionally open its own front panel using the VI Server, but I could not see it because it would always be behind the TestStand Window.

Sean,  The reason for doing this is that the client wants a "debug level" control of some sort. If set below some value, the VIs just do their thing, take their measurements, report, or whatever and go on their way blindly as what we expect a good test sequence to do. However when this value is set above some level (the threshold may be different for various categories of tests) the VI becomes interactive. This would allow an operator to see a measured value, and possibly tinker with the instrument parameters or the UUT, before continuing on. This might be similar to a single step command, but not necessarily pausing at every step. Inside of the VI I can test the value of the variable (either passed in through the connector pane or via the sequence context) and thus decide whether to be interactive or silent. I can also use the VI server to open my front panel or not.  But in doing so, even though I try to make the VI panel frontmost, it is hidden by Teststand. If the VI attribute is "dialog" then it does show up on top of everything else, but unfortunately does so even when I don't tell it to open at all.

  • LV 8.5 opens all sub-VI front panels

    Hello,
Recently I again saw a strange occurrance that has happened to me about 10-12 times over the past year. Here specifically I am using LV 8.5 with the cRIO and FPGA module. When I was running a new RT VI from the developer environment, (deploying to the cRIO) the result looked something like this:
All the sub-VI front panels are opened, and shown in their reserved or running state.
None of these VIs are set to show front panel when called or opened, but all are sub-VIs of the top level VI within the project. It seems to have replicated a "Find all VIs in memory, within the project" and then "Show front panel" Invoke. The troubling thing is that this is not really repeatable, when I have closed all the VIs and run the VI again, it is fine. I have seen the same behavior in LV 8.2, 8.21 as well as when deploying to cFP-2120 or when on a Host computer.
Has anyone else seen this or are there any ideas of what is going on?
    Thanks,
    Mello

Well now that I have seen to image, I recall having seen this myself.
Like you, it was when I was deploying to an RT target and I was not able to recreate this behaviour.
It was either an 8.0 or a 8.2 app.
So all I can do is confirm that you are not alone, but can not offer a solution.

  • Set front panel size to fit different monitor ( 2 monitors-pattern to 1 monitor-pattern)

    Hello, Everybody,
I have here some questions about front panel size.
At first I have create my LabVIEW programs with 2 monitors and run them with 2 monitors, because of this reason I have created a huge front panel with many objects.
But sometimes I will run the program only with 1 monitor, the problem is, the front panel is too big, I can not see the front panel with all objects completely on one monitor! I know, I can scroll aroud it, but I don´t like this way. I would like to set the front panel size automatically to fit the window ( to differenz window sizes or resolutions), how can I do that?
I have tried with "Maintain proportions of window for different monitor resolutions" and "Scale all objects on front panel as the window sizes" to finish that, but they did`t work, I can not see the front panel at once on one monitor;-(
    Can you help me?
    regards,
    Johnny

As noted in the KB article What Is the Difference Between the Options
"Scale All Objects on Panel" and "Maintain Window Proport..., the "Scale All Objects on Panel causes all the objects inside the panel to scale when the panel itself is resized". If the panel isn't resized, the objects arent's scaled. You may also want to read the KB article How Do I Scale All of the Objects of My Front Panel with the Window Size?.

  • Limit Front Panel Bounds programmably

    Hi,
My front panel contains a picture control that fills the panel. I allow the user to resize the window and also apply zoom factors to it. At times, I have to limit the panel size to prevent the panel from being larger than the drawing area of the picture. This is easy to do when the zoom factor is changed, but I'm having trouble finding a good solution when the user reszes the panel.
Currently I am using the "Panel Resize" event to detect when the panel size has changed and if it is too big I use a property node to reset the front panel bounds. This works but is not ideal. Since this is not a filtered event, I can only fix it after it has been moved which means the user can see the front panel background momentarily before I can properly set the size.
Is there a more elegant way to accomplish this task?
Ideally, I'd like to programmably set a limit on the maximum front panel size such that as the user resizes then panel, it just stops at that limit.
    Thanks in advance,
    steve

Thanks for the responses so far,
Here are some examples to better illustrate the issue.
The first  one (res_win)  shows the default behavior with the picture set to fill the panel and to Scale object with pane. The picture control displays a circle that fills the front panel. When you drag the right side of the front panel, first you see some of the background, then the picture is resized and the background is covered.  This is sort of ugly imho plus I only want the customer to see the circle, not the empty space next to it.
The second example (res_win1) uses the Panel Resize event to check for and limit the front panel size, but it still shows the background momentarily which I don't like.
    Thanks again,
