Exempting directories in TAR backups

Hi all,
Although this is a Unix question, I suppose anyone using user managed backups may have encountered this problem:
Let's suppose I've got a directory /u01 and subdirectories a,b,c....up to Z in that directory (ie.u01). If I need to tar up all directories with the exemption_ of x,y and z, what command do I need to run to achieve this.
Regards
Baffy

Hi Laura,
Thanks for your help so far. If I've got 3 directories to exemp (samples01, samples03, samples03), which of the following would be correct:
a) $ tar -cvf sam.tar * --exclude samples01 samples02 samples03
------or-------
b) $ tar -cvf sam.tar * exclude samples01 exclude samples02 --exclude samples03

  • Should I give myself as exempt or "Subject to backup holdings" in itunes connect tax document???

    HI
I'm a legal alien allowed to work in USA and I've my W2 from my company for taxing purposes.
I've built an iAd based app and want to publish them.
I've paid my tax returns properly for the last 2 years without fail.
Should I register myself as "Exempt" or "Subject to Backup withholding"???
I've registered myself as an "Individual/Sole Proprieter"
    Thanks and Regards

Only if he's going to register his law firm as the company legally selling the app. Otherwise he would use his SSN or apply for an EIN as a sole proprietor.
If he has further questions, he really should contact the developer support people.

  • Restore Tar Backup

    Hi all
can anyone tell me how to restore tar backup (complete procedure) or give url where i can find some pdf or so.
One more q. tar backup is complete os and sap backup or only for os

Tar is used to create archive of files,
for some OS it has additional functionality to do compression .
Detailed options available in your OS can be checked by typing "man tar".
To simply extract file_name.tar to working directory you can use tar xvf file_name.tar
Before doing extraction of any tar files, it is recommended to check the file contents first,
    by using tar tvf file_name.tar
You can backup any 'static' file using tar,
that means you should bring the database down before create the tar of its data files .

  • What is a .tar backup file and can I delete it?

I'm cleaning up files on my iMac and noticed a file in my Documents folder (where I keep applications installation files) that is called "backup-fri-feb-08-15_42_35-2013.tar". This file is over 7 gb so I would like to remove it but I can't find anywhere what it is. I found a wiki page that explains that .tar files are old Unix format but what do I need it for and what program created it?

I use an external drive but I use Carbon Copy Cloner instead of Time Machine and I have TM turned off. I'm wondering if it is a backup file from a program I don't even use any longer. I also use Parallels for 2 Windows programs and I'm finding that some of the Windows programs create backups of stuff I don't need or use. Sounds like it would be safe to delete it.
    Thanks so much.

  • Tar backups to usbdrive...

    Hi,
I'm trying out using tar to backup system files to my usbdrive
    This command
    tar -cvzf /dev/sdd1 -g /backups/etc.snap /etc
backs up /etc to usbdrive & puts a snapshot of files in //backup/etc.snap idea being that I will only have to update changed files or new files
thing is atm it just drops a filename call z in /dev/sdd1 which means nothing lol
Would be nicer to have it named something like etcbackup.taz.gz
    /me looks at manual
Atm I would like a simple cli way of backing up /home /etc [maybe pacman stuff!] :?:

Mr Green wrote:would rather use cli ... rsync never had no luck with it ... KDE!!!! nooooo lol
Now just what in the *hell* do you mean you can't get rsync to work? Its the greatest thing since sliced bread.
    Lem'me show 'ya somethin'!:
    tyler@tungsten ~ $ cat /etc/cron.daily/archbu
    #!/bin/bash
    backupdir="/mnt/hdb5/backup/arch"
    [ ! -f $backupdir ] && mkdir -p $backupdir
    rsync -av --delete /etc /home/tyler $backupdir
Look at that. Just look at it. Exact mirror copy. Beautiful.

    Wow the GUI looks great.
Sadly, it's of no use to me as I personally am satisfied with rsync. But, I am sure others will find it useful.
Edit: By the way, you should put qt qt4 (whichever version you are using (I am blind )), in the PKGBUILD depends array.

  • [solved] udev /run folder and tar backups

    Hi,
I usually make my backups of arch using something like this
    tar -cvpzf /media/root-`date +%d%m%y`.tar.gz --exclude=/{dev,lost+found,mnt,media,proc,sys,tmp}/* / | grep tar:
My restore procedure is simple, extract the tar , chroot + mkinitcpio -p + grub and all go fine.
Now the latest updates (initscripts, udev) create a new folder /run , is safe to exclude this folder in the tar file?
    Thanks in advance.
/run is a tmpfs so I think is safe to exclude. mark as solved.

There are a couple of obvious problems: first, your rule file has to end in .rules (not .rule). See http://www.reactivated.net/writing_udev … tml#syntax
Also, rule files are sorted in lexical order, so you may want to prepend a high number to your rule: 90-logitech-mouse.rules, for example. See http://www.freedesktop.org/software/sys … /udev.html
Finally, if the RUN+= key is blocked, look at using SYSTEMD_WANTS: see `man systemd.device`.

  • How can I add selected directories to windows backup choice

    Hi Joe,
    thanks for your feedback.
These files to be tarred aren't there directly after backup stops with error.
It seems that some process stores data about reports in that file and when trying to
pack these reports via tar they are delete by any cleanup method.
    Does this help.
P.S. Backup usually takes about more than 1hour

    Thanks a lot

Can I backup the Apps tier file directories (using tar) which I need for cloning/copy to another server after I run (perl adpreclone.pl appsTier)Yes, you can (you run pre-clone then you copy the files).
Even if the applications is up and running? It is possible; provided that your OS supports copying the files while it is in use (i.e. Linux/Unix). Windows OS does not let you copy the files (i.e. DLL, EXE files) if it is in use.

IF you need more help with rsync, you should move this discussion into the Unix forum. The guys over there know the command quite well.
Mac's rsync is a little different than the standard Linux flavor, because it makes allowances for the HFS+ format.
Here's the command I use (it runs nightly as a cron job)
    rsync -a -c --exclude-from=/etc/rsyncx/exclude.conf /Users /private/etc /var/mail /var/ldap /Volumes/Backup > ~mainuser/rsyncx.log
This command backs up the Users, etc, var/mail, and var/ldap directories to /Volumes/Backup. Any problems are recorded in rsyncx.log in mainuser's home directory.
I use the exclude.conf file to skip things like cache files and other detritus that doesn't need to be saved. It's just a plain text file with these lines (note the "NoArchive/" -- anytime I have stuff I don't want archived, I just create a folder named "NoArchive" anywhere I want; anything in there won't get backed up):

  • Cisco Works LMS 3.2 backup takes too long time to finish

    Hello guys,
We have problem with scheduled LMS 3.2 backup. It  takes more than 12hours to finish. You can see in log that backup is  scheduled for 18:00h and it waits untill 22:07 to start doing anything.  We can't figure out why is there such a delay. It started to happen  after system reported lack of free space on disk. And we feed up the  space, but then faced this problem with long duration. Before this  problem occured backup used to last for 45 min od 1 hour.
Backup to 'C:/BACKUP' started at: [Mon Apr 11 18:01:26 2011]

Do you have any ideas what went wrong and how to fix it?
    Thanks,
    Marija

This is a catch 22 , you need to apply a patch to fix a backup problem , yet you want to backup before applying a patch.  This is where you will have to assume some risk, and apply the patch w/o a backup.
Go to Common Services -> Device and Credentials -> Device Mgmt and export the entire DCR (All devices) to a CSV file.  Make sure you browse to someplace outside application space, I usually place the file at c:\.  Also make sure you check mark the include credentials box, so you also have all your device passwords.  This is your D/R plan, if things were to fail you will have your device list you can import in an emergency.
Or you can try the suggestion of clearing DFM to mitigate potential loss so you can get a good backup of the rest of LMS.  Just be sure to view your notifications and cut/paste into note pad so they can be rebuilt.  You will lose history and local customizations to Polling and Thresholds and DDV.

  • Deleting an older Backups.backupdb/(hostname) dirs from a Time Machine disk

Last year I replaced my old Xserve-G5 with a new MacPro. The Xserve had an external hard disk it used for Time Machine backups. I didn't format the disk when changing servers on the theory that I'd want to keep a few months of backup history.
Fast forward to today, and the backup disk is starting to get a bit full, and now that I have enough of a backup history, I want to delete the snapshots from the Xserve. If I try to:
    sudo rm -rf /Volumes/Backup/Backups.backupdb/Xserve/
I get a lot of "Operation Not Permitted" errors. Inspecting in "Server Admin" shows that there are ACLs setup on the per-host directories inside of Backups.backupdb set to Deny most activities. Any attempt to remove or change that ACL, or add your own 'Allow' ACLs show the changes get reset back to the single Deny rule immediately.
How do I claim back my space? Formatting would be an option, but would destroy my backup history. I would consider plugging it into an alternate (non-production) machine and booting it off the install DVD, but the drive is a DroboPro, which requires some drivers to work.

Enter Time Machine from the menu bar icon or Dock, select the appropriate backup then click on the gear button at the top of the Finder style window, you will see a delete back up option in the list.
