Experience with Content Management SDK?

We are considering using the SDK for storage of files, particularly Web assets. We want basick versioning, fast search, and integration with Intmedia so we can store images, video, and audio files.
We are already running App. Server and DB.....and we are a Java shop.
What has been the experience of people with the SDK? Is it fully baked? Flexible? Stable.

Good to hear that CMSDK has been stable. Here is what I am trying to do :
1. I want to store files / retrieve files / manage retention policies for the documents/ objects available.
2. I want to do all the above using Java. After my walkthrough of the components available I understood that I need to install URM with Content Server for me to set up the server environment. After further anaylsis I installed URMAgent also into the Content Server.
Now I am stuck on identifying the SDK needed for me to access the Content Server with URM and URMAgent installed. Can you please advice me on the same ?

I think there is some thing missing in my configurations. Can you please tell how to deploy and run a hibernate application. I would say that there are pro's and con's to both arguments. If you want to make use of iFS with ID, Web Cache etc then you're going to need a copy of 9iAS anyway and as iFS becomes more integrated with various applications then you can see where Oracle is coming from.
If you are a software house developing solutions based on iFS then this makes the licensing issue much cleaner and simpler for clients to understand (something which we have come up against as iFS is availabe in 9iDB and 9iAS). It also means that iFS should receive greater exposure within Oracle as the account managers are more likely to do something with it as it is a revenue generator.
Naturally the other side is if you are developing an application or just using iFS in house then having to purchase 9iAS can seem like unwanted overhead. I think over the coming months we are likely to see iFS more tightly integrated with iAS so eventually to make use of that additional functionality you will need a copy of iAS. I guess it depends what you are doing with it as the API is likely to be packaged in a similar way as other dev kits.

Creating Users in Content Management SDK Manager

I´ve installed Content Management SDK , now i want to create users trough the manager, when im filling the fields for the user creation, there is a field named (Credential Manger or Gestor de Credenciales in Spanish) but in this field there isnt values to select, so i cant select Ifs as credential manager, anyone knows why??

goto admin applet -> user admin --> Add --->enter deatils of User like name/full name/password/corm password/e mail addrsss(This is for the workflow purpose).Suer local automatically selected either Local/ Global .
Then goto next TAB ROles in which you have select the roles (Admin/Contributor/guest/reviewer/sysmanager) select any one of the roles. if you select the admin you would get the adminstartion tab in the left navigation. So basing on the role you have selected you would get the permission to access content server.
Finish close that window open the new window http://server ip/idc
give the username/password
i think this would solve your problem.

Content management with FrameMaker

The company I work for has had a customized EDD built for structured FrameMaker. A template was developed from the EDD and the authors make technical manuals with this template. Our manuals are printed in pdf and on hard copy. We do not have any current plans to publish on the web. We are currently using FrameMaker 7.2 and will soon go to version 8.0.....anyway, the "powers that be" are looking into a Content Management system for us. A portion of our company is using XMetal with the content management system. Is it possible, with the use of DITA, to continue to use FrameMaker with content management, in conjunction with an XMetal system? We DO NOT want to lose the WYSIWYG capability. On the other hand, are there any suggestions of how to build a type of data/content management system with elements in Structured FrameMaker? It really depends on the CMS and how it integrates with the authoring tools. There's no problem sharing DITA files between Frame and XMetaL, but the CMS may have a special connector with XMetaL that hasn't been developed for Frame. It may be that you'll have to request that the CMS vendor develop a similar connector for FM if it doesn't exist. If the CMS doesn't make use of a connector for XMetaL .. and you just check out files then check them back in .. this process should work fine for FM as well.

Get the latest approved version of a content management resource

Hi I am using EP 6 with Content management.
I my application I need to get resources form content management, approval process is enabled for the content items.
I use this code
RID rid = RID.getRID(path);

where rf is a com.sapportals.wcm.repository.IResourceFactory
created from a service user and a service context
which work fine, When the resource has been approved.
however if I change the specified content Item and do not approve it, the above code returns null as resource.
I would expect the api to return the latest approved version of the resource.
Have I misunderstood soemthing here or should I use another API?

I solved my problem...
first of all.
Versioning was enabled for the folder but apparently it didnt work so i disabled it and enabled it again. Then I got the correct reource instead of null.
second thing
later in mycode I used this to get the path of the resource
resource.getRID().getPath();
but this gives the path to where the version of the document can be found... something like /documents/~System/xx/xxxxx/xxxx
where x is numbers
after doing a little debugging I found out that
resource.getAccessRID().getPath()
returns the path to where in CM the resource is stored.
I hope My experience here can help others.
I am glad that I solved my problem, but I find it extremely worrying that some settings in CM apparently stops working without any apparent reason.
We have experienced this with other properties like Manual Ordering, Approval process, have any one else had these problems and found the cause then I would like to hear about it

Yes they all can be installed on the same machine,
By all I mean oracle database 10g, application server 10g and cmsdk 10g.
You have to install them in that order and for AS10g just install the J2EE and HTTP server.

How does your portal's content management work? Are you happy with it?

It would be great if there was some sharing of how people have configured their content and document management through the portal, and how happy they are. I'm assuming almost everyone is on Publisher and Collab, but do you use them in a special way? Anything customized?
I'm currently looking for ways to make our system more flexible and easier to create new content areas. Also, uploading documents is a huge pain.

Customizations:
We include edit pencils at the top of each content item visible for people with edit access to the community.
FCKeditor instead of default rich text editor, with image upload
links to KD cards and community pages are transformed into adaptive tags on save
Issues
There is clear separation between what a 'content editor' and a 'community manager' is able to create. Any creation of new portlets or changing of anything falls on the community manager. Content editor feels very restricted as they only have control over what is inside the boxes, and can't create new 'pages'. This leads to stale content.
Documents: Collaboration
We use collab for documents because we want to be able to publish different versions of the same doc to the KD, without breaking any links that we have created to that existing document. We use snapshot queries sometimes to display documents, but more ofthen than not we just use a KD picker to display a single document, and this means we need to be able to update the card without breaking the link.
Issues
Training users to go to collab to upload documents is not easy, and then publishing is difficult as well. There is no multi-document publish. Publishing sometimes fails and times out, and the document can be deleted from collab and still exist in the KD. Also, custom properties that we add to cards in the KD seem to vanish, but hopefully upgrading to the latest versions will help.
I'd like to investigate creating helper functions to make the job of uploading documents to the correct folder in collab easier. The tool would upload to the right folder, and then publish to the KD if necessary.

We are using publisher for web content as well as documents.
The documents are crawled into the KD using the publisher crawler, and we use a "link to document" custom button that build automatically the PT:Tag link to the KD card that represents the crawled document.
So really all the links to documents stay valid only if the KD card are not deleted and recreated...(otherwise, the links are broken...and i did not find a better way to handle this better yet)
We also use the "Edit/Create" buttons for all our publisher content in order to allow content editors easy access to the publisher content to edit/add.
The main pain points we have is that the preview is not very useful...previewing only the content of your portlet does not give you a feel of what the complete portal page will look with your new content. If there was a way to view the portal page (with all the publisher portlets on it) in preview mode, THAT would be useful.
And because of this, content managers are not very comfortable to create/edit the content in PROD directly (because they really want to see the end product of their editing process...i.e. the final portal page) and i don't blame them...
Which leads to another huge pain point: When creating content in Staging for example, it is hard to push it to PROD when ready. And even if you use the import/export feature (which is not great either because you can only export folder instead of being able to pick and chose the content you want to export), you need to have someone (infrastructure person who have access to servers) move the publisher export zip file...which makes the whole process more cumbersome than it should be, really.
Publisher should be multi-environment aware...What i mean is that it would be great if a single publisher instance would allow to push the content to different environments (i.e. STG first, and then when it looks good PROD) as the content mature towards production state. (products like Documentum -I know it is not the same planet compared to publisher but still...- do this flawlessly)
Last the free text editor is not awesome and i don't like that when you add a link to another item or image, it automatically puts the absolute path in there...that makes it harder to migrate.
I have not tried to replace the free text editor...What is your experience with FCKEditor??
