Export for screening in movie theatre

The question:
How do I better compress my footage (QT file) to view on a movie theatre screen (for a film festival) where the action doesn't motion blur?
Specs:
The film was shot as on P2 cards as 1080i24, imported as 1080p30, edited in a timeline of 1080i60, and compressed to DVCPRO-NTSC (720x480 Letterbox) - I remember the final being compressed as "interlaced".
We submitted this QT file, which they requested, and it showed no problems being viewed on any computer, but when projected onto the big screen you could painfully notice choppy movement.
I'm guessing it begins with the initial odd filming choice (1080i24 - NOT 24N or true progressive).
What do you think? Would something simple like choosing "progressive" during final output have been better?
Thank you, ahead of time!

LOLOL Aw, Shane, it was a mess! I'm very surprised it looks alright, though, aside from the theater screening. Never again...
This was for a 48 Hour Film competition, and after successful tests w/ 720p footage earlier in the week to get work flow down, someone on set suddenly decided to switch things up at the last second and go with 1080i24 which I wasn't told about until I started importing footage.... Why?! Your guess is as good as mine.
Let's see if I remember this correctly: upon importing, I found out that FCP doesn't have the exact codec (through Easy Setup) to import this footage as it was shot - this is probably where I'm going awry in my description to you, because while Easy Setup DOES has 1080i60 the exact way it was filmed is not a function of FCP. I found numerous pages of advice all telling me to import this footage at 1080p30, which I did - this could be another thing I can't exactly remember since I'm only looking at the footage description in FCP right now. Upon making a new timeline the footage wouldn't match up correctly (w/ out heavy rendering) so I had to click off the box which asked if I wanted to convert the timeline to the video - "no". The footage worked/edited perfectly fine in a DVCPRO HD 1080i60 timeline. Seemed to make sense since finding out the "24p" was not true progressive (didn't film in 24pA).
Since my FCP must have a kink, I followed folks' good advice from the boards and compressed to SD Letterbox by first making a self-contained QT file, and then exporting directly from QT w/ DV/DVCPRO - NTSC, Best quality, Interlaced, 4:3 scaled w/ Letterbox.
Whaddya think? Still shocking, yes, but more confusing? Any way to make it look better on the big screen?

  • LA Theaters for Screening Indie Movie

    Hi,
    I know this is not an FCP question, but I assume that those working in post might have info related to this question:
    I'm looking for a theater in Los Angeles that will screen my 90 minute movie for an indie rate. Do any of you have experience with this and have recommendations? If there's a special rate for film students I would appreciate it.
    Thanks,
    Alexander

    My experience is limited to friends who have used the Westwood Crest and Laemmle's Music Hall 3 theater on Wilshire.
    I never asked what their deals were.
    Perhaps the Egyptian, Aero or Nuart also?

  • Publish a Captivate project for screen in movie theater

    Hi,
    I was asked to develop a software demo animation (approximately 3min) that will eventually be viewed on a big screen in a movie theater.
    Of course the aim is to have a perfect image quality as possible.
    Is Captivate a good medium to create such a project?
    The output I would like to use is an .mp4 video format. But are there any important settings I should activate with that output?
    I have already noticed that the maximum Captivate project size is 1280x720. When I go beyond that, it all goes wrong.
    What should be the screenshot resolution and the dpi value to use so that the image quality of the screenshots when viewed on the movie screen is flawless?
    Thanx!

    Hi,
    You can publish to either as .mp4 (Go to publish >Media >Mp4 ) or .swf from Captivate 7. In presenter 9 you do have an option to either import .swf or .mp4 files. See the image below to import these two formats in presenter:

  • Export for quick time running under windows?

    I am coming to Final cut X pro from Imovie. Under Imovie I could export a movie  that would run under quicktime for both Mac and Windows computers. Now using Final cut X pro, when I export for quicktime, my movie works fine using a Mac computer but fails under windows. When I attempt to open the movie quicktime tells me I have a problem with the codec. It indicates that I need an add on, but does not indicate which one is needed. Share works great for  output to my Ipad.   What I like to do is export to quicktime and use a windows computer to output to a wide screen tv. I down loaded the latest version of quicktime for windows.   Under the share option what codec option should I chose, or do I require an add in to Quicktime?   Thanks.

    Not that you should have to, but try to make your final export from Compressor to see if that works better. Perhaps this can help you isolate the problem. H.264 should work in Windows, so you could also check your export on a different PC to see if the problem is on the receiving end.
    I'll put in my vote here for Flip-for-mac getting their components to play nice with FCX. I have always found it a handy tool.

  • Question about file size when using "Export for Web"

    Hi!
    I created a .mov file and worked to get a great balance between file size and quality so that I could deliver it via the web and make it easier for end users to see the video on a slower connection.
    My question: When I use "Export for Web," my .mov file is converted into a very large .m4v file--more than double the size of the original file. I know that this export option is to optimize the file for a wide variety of users/internet speeds. Am I correct in guessing that the end size is not an issue? I would post the .mov file instead, but I really like the option of embedding into a html page along with the "click to play" option.
    Bottom line--is it better to post the smaller .mov file that i originally started with or to go ahead and link to the bigger .m4v file that was created with the "Export for Web" option?

    "Export for Web" is a feature of QuickTime Pro and it makes 4 files and the html page code for easy copy/paste Web page editing.
    The very first file is called a "reference movie" and it links to the other 3 files (56kbps, 900kbps and 1.5Mbps). It, and the page code, "read" the connection speed of the viewing hardware and "serve up" the correct file based on that connection speed.
    In nearly all cases the "Desktop" version would still be smaller in file size than the original source. The times the file would "increase" in file size would be when an already compressed was used as the source file. You can find out more about your source file by opening it in QuickTime Player and viewing the Movie Inspector window information.
    There are dozens of other html "tricks" that could be used if your source file is already compressed but you want a different display size:
    Page code to show "aspect" or scale="tofit". This code allows values "outside" of those found in the actual QuickTime file be used for the Web page display. A 320X240 QuickTime .mov file looks pretty good at double size (640X480) but the file size would still be that of the source file.
    "Poster Movie" is another html trick that loads the Web based file directly in the QuickTime Player application (bypassing Web page layout restrictions). These files are also known as "Presentation Movies".
    Another method is the QuickTime Media Link file (.qtl). These are simple text based files that are used as a "direct link". These use simple XML (Extensible Markup Language) and are easily created in any text editing application. The simple syntax has amazing control over a simple QuickTime .mov file. You can launch (and quit) the QuickTime Player, display at other dimensions and even embed "links" inside the display.
    Some of my files as examples:
    http://homepage.mac.com/kkirkster/Lemon_Trees/ a "Poster Movie" style.
    http://homepage.mac.com/kkirkster/.Public/RedneckTexasChristmas.qtl
    A QuickTime Media Link file. A tiny file should download to the viewing machine, launch QuickTime Player, present the movie and it even includes a "link" to my Web page.
    Edit: It appears you must now double click the .qtl download to launch QuickTime.

  • Is the left-hand Home screen reserved for TV and movies?

    As familiar as I thought I was with Android (via my phones) I thought I would've figure out by now how to get this screen back for other uses. But so far no luck.  Is 1//3 of my available Home screen space really reserved for TV and Movies (and, at that, apparently only the ones downloaded from Google Play)?

    Ann154,
    Bingo! You were absolutely right! And now that widget is gone.
    Unfortunately, so is the screen it was occupying. Now,  instead of three screens I have but two - - the original center screen and the one that had previously been the right-hand screen.
    Which prompts the question of how and where pages are added or deleted from the home screens.

  • Can't watch movie after export for web

    Hello,
    I purchased QuickTime Pro 7.4.5 and exported my first avi movie for web.
    In the local disk the ReadMe.html example works fine.
    But copying all files to a web folder in my web site, the browser can play just the .3gp format. The .mov and .m4p files seem being unreachable.
    The web ReadMe.html example shows the jpg poster, but clicking on "Click to Play", after a while, Firefox shows the QuickTime logo with an interrogation mark (IE simply shows a black rectangle).
    Here you can evaluate my test: http://www.astrogb.com/movies/Nebrodi/ReadMe.html
    Since I am still, I'll greatly appreciate any help.
    Regards,
    Giovanni

    Your link is no longer working
    I have had similar problems embedding QuickTime and am currently looking for the solution. In the meantime, one fix that I have found is to amend the included script files in the header of your html:
    You must go to the following URL and download these three files:
    http://www.apple.com/library/quicktime/scripts/ac_quicktime.js
    http://www.apple.com/library/quicktime/scripts/qtp_library.js
    http://www.apple.com/library/quicktime/stylesheets/qtp_library.css
    put them on your webserver, in the same directory as your "ReadMe.html" file (or whatever you renamed it).
    In your html file, replace:
    <script src="http://www.apple.com/library/quicktime/scripts/ac_quicktime.js" language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript"></script>
    <script src="http://www.apple.com/library/quicktime/scripts/qtp_library.js" language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript"></script>
    <link href="http://www.apple.com/library/quicktime/stylesheets/qtp_library.css" rel="StyleSheet" type="text/css" />
    with:
    *<script src="qtp_library.js" language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript"></script>*
    *<script src="AC_QuickTime.js" language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript"></script>*
    *<link href="qtp_library.css" rel="StyleSheet" type="text/css" />*
    This should enable the videos to work.
    If you are still having trouble, your webserver may need to be configured with the correct MIME type for m4v, mp4.
    You can see an example video that I have created here:

  • IMovie 08 exports reversed screen shot instead of movie to all targets

    Capture - iShowU - Apple Animation - looks great - edits great - Can't get the **** thing out of iMovie - it exports a screen shot only - a backwards screenshot - like a negative - upside down as well - to iTunes, MediaBrowser, .Mac, YouTube - desktop.
    Then I started from scratch - moved contents of iMovie folder to trash - re-imported clips - which were stored on an external drive - Same thing.

    Note to Apple - Is this something that I can expect to be fixed or do I give up and start over?
    They will if everyone provides appropriate feedback through proper channels. Here is a link to the Apple "Product Feedback" page on which you can locate a link to current Apple products. Use the links provided to report bugs, make technical comments, or request enhancements. If you don't report a problem, they can't fix it. • Exporting for Web Usage

    Hi. I have no doubt this has been discussed, but am hoping I can get a more concrete answer. I would like to export some shorts to put on my web site. I know there is a balance to be struck between quality and file size, but the choices that can be made with settings leaves me confused.
    I am using the latest version of Final Cut Studio Pro. What are best settings based on people's experience to export for web usage? This would ideally be a quicktime file in the end.
    Thanks.

    I usually use Sorenson 3, quarter screen size and they usually come out pretty manageable. I would use the H.264 codec but I want to be sure all who come to my site and view the Quicktimes and some people don't have QT v.7 yet.
    Allow me a shameless plug as well: http://www.scottsimmons.tv/
    If you look at any clips on my site and save them as a quicktime movie, then open them an playback in Quicktime player, you can hit command + i and see the movie info where you can see exact specs on each clip. That can give you an idea of quality and file size. It's really an imperfect science.

  • What video format to export for Ipad Apps

    Hi,
    I am new in export flash to ipad. I tried to export my video as FLV for my ipad apps, it plays but its lagging or jerky.
    I had tried other formats like mp4, f4v, m4v or mov it just doesn't play
    Wonder if anyone knows what video format to export for my ipad apps?
    Bruce
    http://www.vmw.com.sg

    [email protected], on an iPad, here's what I did to get the FLV loading and taking up (most) of the screen. You can't use the FLV Component skins so you have to use the UI Components as markc888 suggested below your comment. My only gripe with this solution is that I can't get the fullScreen button to make the video go full screen.
    This is starts from a playVideo button on my stage.
    playVideo.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, playVideoClick);
    function playVideoClick(event:MouseEvent):void {
    var flvPlayback:FLVPlayback = new FLVPlayback();
    flvPlayback.x = 62;
    flvPlayback.y = 62;
    flvPlayback.width = 900;
    flvPlayback.height = 506;
    flvPlayback.fullScreenTakeOver = true;
    flvPlayback.autoPlay = true;
    flvPlayback.source = "yourMovie.flv";
    flvPlayback.bufferTime = .1;
    addChild(flvPlayback);
    flvPlayback.playPauseButton = playPauseBtn_mc;
    flvPlayback.stopButton = stopBtn_mc;
    flvPlayback.seekBar = seekBar_mc;
    var closeMovie:yourMovieClip = new yourMovieClip();
    addChild(closeMovie);
    closeMovie.x = 977;
    closeMovie.y = 77;
    closeMovie.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, closeMovieClick);
    function closeMovie(event:MouseEvent):void {
    flvPlayback.stop();
    removeChild(flvPlayback);
    removeChild(closePres);
    Hope it helps...

  • OSX Lion and exporting for iPhone

    There was a thread about how when trying to set and/or publish for iPhone or edit its settings, Flash CS5 immediately crashes. The problem has been experienced by many Mac OSX Lion users and they talked about it in this unresolved thread: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/888198#3851750 but still no updates from Adobe. Adobe sent me a response to my Support ticket that "it's an Actionscript 3 coding issue" then closed it so I couldn't reply. Ummmm, NO it isn't a coding issue, I tried to export an FLA file with no code in it. That's a really bad way to do business, Adobe. But since they're not going to be helpful (and probably lose me as a customer) has anyone else found a workaround for this?

    ccroo wrote:
    The aspect ratio of the iphone screen is 480 x 320, but that size is not an option when exporting for iPhone using Compressor. You have to use a custom setting.
    Why is this the case?
    You have to understand that the Apple-provided presets are good launching points, not end-all, be-all settings.
    And iPhones do support material encoded as 640 pixels wide so the preset for VGA (up to 640x480) works fine for most people. I personally rarely use anything smaller than the VGA setting for Apple Devices as I find that's the perfect middle ground for iPods, iPhones and AppleTV.
    If you (understandably) need to limit your file and frame sizes, adjusting the device setting in Compressor to iPhone (Local/WiFi) does the trick - fitting your movie into a 480 pixel-wide frame size and capping the video data rate at 1000 Kbps.
    Letterboxing - as in hard mattes - is not needed when encoding for Apple Devices. In fact, if you have letterboxing in your source media, use the Geometry pane to crop out the Letterbox Area of Source. That will provide you with a better quality encode and the preset will know to adjust your output frame size, so you need not worry about distorting your movie.

    I've looked aroud the forums and it seems a lot of people are having the same issue, but I haven't seen a fix for this.
    Below is a screen shot of the export settings I'm using to try and export a full rez movie (I'm not picky, H264, Qtime TIFF sequence, anything). Notice the image in the preview window. That's what it's supposed to look like, and the preview within Premiere is fine.
    Below is the pixelated image I get when rendering with any combination of maxed out settings.
    The content of the video is predominantly motion graphics, rendered at D1/DV widescreen settings, prorgessive.
    I've tried all the Quicktime settings even with "None" selected in the Codec dropdown as well as the H264 settings you see above.
    I'm on a Mac as well.
    Can anyone help please? I need to know how to just get an export from Premiere CS4 with all the footage intact and not pixelated.

    yeah, youre dealing with a standard ntsc video size export which is 720x480, so its handling your 720x486 source and export the only way it knows how ( sorta scaling internally etc on export )..hence crop..
    looks like your original graphics images ( source files -- source graphics images ) are not matching the project size....
    in other words it looks like your source graphics were "scaled" to some extent when imported to the project.  that should actually "match" for really good results... the source graphics should match the project dimensions ( without scaling )... the reason is that in the scaling process the editor doesn't do a good job of anti aliasing and so on ( photoshop is better at scaling for example and there are other 3rd party programs that are better for up scaling ( interpolated ) than photoshop..some can be had as plug ins for psd )..
    anway, the problem looks to be the scaling....cause ideally your graphics should match the project dimensions ( without scaling )
    ps...scaling DOWN is better than scaling UP...with regard the aliasing you see

  • Your slideshow cannot be exported as a QuickTime movie.

    Hi,
    I have created an Keynote presentation and had exported it many times, over and over, since I need it to be exported. Today, I did it three times, and when I went to change the preference for exporting...
    I was using Custom > H.264 @ 60frames @ Key all frames @ Multipass.
    I wanted to change to > DV-PAL > @ 30frames @ Quality Best @ Scan progressive @ 4:3.
    When I tried to export, 1/3 down the export I got the Error -50.
    Quote:

    There’s not enough disk space, or there was a problem with the file. Error -50.
    I have enough disk space but what can be wrong with the file?
    I have unchecked exit after last slide.
    I need answer fast. I cant rebuild the whole presentation.

    Hi Gary,
    Thanks for the reply.
    I used the default "Full Quality, Large" settings, and the Keynote I'm working on is based on Keynotopia's iPhone-mockup/wireframe slides, so they are 640x960 in size. Here is the export screen:
    This is on Mac OS X Mountain Lion with the latest version of Keynote from the App Store.
