Export to Fixed Field Spacing using TOAD....
Hi Guys,
Here's my situation. I am exporting my data-set from TOAD to a Fixed width text file, but i dont see the option to specify the length that each column should occupy. Is there any way i could do this?
For example:
I am running the query :
Select Column_1,
Column_2
from table_1
Data-Set :
column_1 column_2
XYZ------ABC
UUR------HHY
When i look at the columns they are defined as :
Column_1 Varchar2(35)
Column_2 Varchar2(40)
When I am exporting the data set to a Fixed width file, I want to manually say that the length of the column_1 is 40 bytes and length of column_2 is 50 bytes etc. and not 35 or 40. Please Advise.
Thanks,
Kon
First of all, you should be posting this in TOAD forums.
To get you started, check if usage of RPAD with blanks upto desired length (in your SELECT) is respected by TOAD export functionality.

Exporting to fixed length text using Crystal Enterprise 10

I would like to know if it is possible to export from Crystal Enterprise 10 to a fixed length text file similar to the text exporting option using Crystal Reports 8.5. From Enterprise 10 I see you can export to Rich Text Format but that is not really the same.

Export to fixed length field format
Sometimes we need to export records from our student system as fixed length text file to integrate with other software.
Basically the report will only contains rows of records, But we want to export it to fixed length field text file.
And then automate the process.
We also have Crystal enterprise server. What is the easy and best way to accomplish this?
ThanksSorry. Please ignore my last message. It went into the wrong thread.
There is one huge problem with exporting to Fixed Length in 8.5. The Fixed Length will truncate any trailing white space. So if you have a could that's 5 characters long but the current value is only 3, it will only be 3 characters long.
To get around this, I've had to create a formula for each column in the report and check the lenght of the field and pad or truncated accordingly.
For example:
If Length ({Table.FIELD1}) > 10 Then
{Table.FIELD1} [1 to 10]
Else {Table.FIELD1} & ReplicateString ("*", (10 - Length ({Table.FIELD1}));
So this column should be 10 characters long. If the field is longer than 10 characters it will truncate it to 10, otherwise it will pad the extra spaces with *. You can't use spaces to pad because the export driver will truncate them so I decided * were the best choice because for my purposes I knew that character would never be used.
Good luck,

Export import - using TOAD FOR ORACLE and ORACLE DATABASE 10G EXPRESS or s
Hi all,
Could you please kindly help me?
I am using TOAD FOR ORACLE to export a table to flat file A. The tool just supports to distinguish fields by "spaces".
And the web page of ORACLE DATABASE 10G EXPRESS to import the data from flat file A to another database. To load data to a table from a text file, the web page bases on "comma" to distinguish fields.
So could you have any suggestion for me? I need to export data via TOAD FOR ORACLE. And then import it to another database by the home page of ORACLE DATABASE 10G EXPRESS or sqlplus.
Thank you so much for your help!Dont use TOAD for exporting your data. Use PL/SQL. Below is the code given in Asktom.com that does what you want.

dbms_sql.column_value( l_theCursor, i, l_columnValue );
utl_file.put( l_output, l_separator || l_columnValue );
l_separator := p_separator;
end loop;
utl_file.new_line( l_output );
l_cnt := l_cnt+1;
end loop;
dbms_sql.close_cursor(l_theCursor);
utl_file.fclose( l_output );
return l_cnt;
end dump_csv;

i paid for exportpdf and every time i try to use tool on pdf, it asks me to subscribe. i have to log into website EVERY time. not acceptable. Some forms can't be saved so having to log in and only use webtool to upload a saved pdf won't work.
as well, how can i export only form fields that were filled in if I can get pdf to save to computer?Hi kstine,
I can see why that would be frustrating! Have you tried selecting Stayed Signed In underneath the Adobe ID and Password boxes when you try to log in?
What did you use to create the PDF form? If you used FormsCentral, form data is saved to your online FormsCentral account. If you have Acrobat, you can export form data as described here: Adobe Acrobat X Pro * Manage form data files

Cannot process a Fixed Field Length file using the File Adapter (Sender)
Hi -
I have checked throughout these posts and blogs but I still have not been able to find a solution to my issue. When using the File Adapter (Sender) I get a Conversion initialization failed with "xml.keyfieldName", no value found. Why would I require a key field when I am using fixed field lenghts? The file is comprised of 2 structures - 1 header and multiple details (see below). There are no key fields in the flat file that I would be able to use. Any suggestions?

you can use the module from which u can convert your structure to

Please note the extra H,D in the struture added by the module.
You can then use them as your key fieldValues.. The module should be deployed in Visual Admin and then can be used in the Module tab of your adapter CC
While writing the content conversion after that please dont forget about the added new characters
Please note also that i can find that the word supplier kept repeating in all the Dtachkp records
Please use that
Also if you feel that the field is of 13 characters and that would cause a problem dont worry... create a dummy field eg split tht 13 to two fields and use the common one as key field Value and identifier... as i see in ure case its like 500 Supplier , 502 Supplier . u can split the first 4 char and the remaing 9 char are key field value.
try this out

Hi All,
I have been trying out InDesign and exported files to XFL for use in Flash. If I use a single font for a text box then everything looks fine in flash, but if I use multiple fonts for the same text box its split into multiple text boxes. For making this more clear I have attached an image.
Any help to resolve this!!!Paragraph styles are tied to the paragraph, not the page.
You don't say which version you are using, but here's something you could try in CS3 or CS4. Set up a baseline grid in the preferences to match the main pages. The spacing should match the leading of the body text. Make a special paragraph style (you can base it on the body text style) that you will apply to text onthe chapter start page, and as part of that style set it to align to baseline grid. Now for the trick. Select the text frame onthe start page and define a custom baseline grid with the spacing you want. Save it as an object style, too, while you're at it. The strating text should align to the custom grid on the start page and the documetn grid on the next page.

CSV output (export to excel) don't use right code table
CSV output (export to excel) don't use right code table. We use code table
8859-2 (reports and forms are OK). Why export to excel don't use this code table.
Thanks for answersYou could also take the example from my blob that Denes mentioned and instrument it to output in either CSV or HTML. This way, you could have a single procedure that worked for both formats.
All you would need to do is handle each field differently - pad a TD and /TD (with proper brackets, of course) if its HTML or just append a comma if it's CSV.
Thanks,

Fonts Not Embedding Consistently with PDF Export - Inconsistent Fix and Unknown Cause
I have had ongoing problems with PDF export from FrameMaker. Sometimes the correct fonts do not embed in the PDF and Times New Roman is substituted. The problem appears and disappears and is causing me a lot of lost time and frustration.
I am running FrameMaker 9.0 fully patched on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. I have seen people complain about this issue and am familiar with the suggested fixes. However, the exact cause and solution eludes me because the problem continues to recur and I am only able to recover with guesswork and workarounds.
Initially I did the following:
ACROBAT PDF SETTINGS
- In the printer properties for Adobe PDF settings I turned off the option "Rely on system fonts only; do not use documents fonts."
ACROBAT DISTILLER SETTING
Under "Font" Settings I changed the following:
- Under "Settings/Font Locations" I added the font folder for Technical Communication Suite 2.0 and made sure all the fonts existed there and in the Windows default font directory.
- Under "Settings/Edit Adobe PDF Setting/Fonts" I changed the following options:
- Selected "Embed all fonts"
- Under "Embedding" chose "Always Embed" for the target fonts.
I tweaked these settings for hours and got no results. Then I rebooted and the problem had magically disappeared. I fixed the issue in the same way on another machine and the results were permanent and I was just happy to finally have it fixed, But this time it didn't last.
I should note that upon reboot, when I used the stock "PDF Job Options," the correct fonts still embedded, leading me to believe that the fix had nothing to do with the changes I made to Distiller settings.
After reboot I generated PDFs with the correct fonts embedded. Then I shut down FM, but left the system running. The next morning I opened FM again and the same problem occurred.
So I rebooted again -- and the problem disappeared again. I therefore thought maybe the issue fixes on reboot but recurs when you shut down FM and reopen. So I shut down FM again and reopened, but it is still working fine for the moment.
I verified that the Adobe PDF settings under "Printers & Devices" that I turned off (Rely on system fonts only; do not use documents fonts) remained correctly unchecked through all these changes.
I would really like to know why this happens so I can resolve it permanently and avoid more lost time.
Thanks in advance,
DouglasThe common theme I'm seeing here is that the setting edits you make in
Distiller through the FM "Save As PDF" option don't seem to take effect.
Do you know if that is true or could you elaborate on the notorious nature
of this method for me?
>
There are too many potential and transient problems to list. The only thing
I can say is that I've been an active member of the FrameUsers listserv
(http://lists.frameusers.com/mailman/listinfo/framers) since FM version 6.0,
circa 2001, and probably 95% of the PDF problems reported there have been
fixed simply by using print to Adobe PDF (or to Acrobat Distiller in older
PDF versions), instead of using Save as PDF. Common advice there has always
been to avoid Save as PDF and even some Adobe employees have recommended
against using it. It doesn't matter which FM version.
The once-busy FrameUsers listserve has been fading away, recently, as this
new Adobe forum software allows reading via e-mail, and attachment of
screenshots. Even if you look around on this forum now, you'll probably
find that there are two main fixes for issues with PDF. One is NOT using
Save as PDF, which seems to fix a whole bunch of issues. The other is the
use of a Windows hotfix to squash a Windows OS bug that causes dropped
characters in PDFs.
In the rare instances that someone has issues with printing to PDF, they are
almost always related to errors in settings. Or occasionally someone can't
embed fonts because they are trying to the embed the virtual fonts that come
with their printer driver instead of fonts that have actually been installed
on their computer. (The fonts are hard-wired on their printer, so the system
can use them but not embed them.) -
Not able to connect to database using toad
we have a 11.1.0.7 database on solaris machine.
when the development team tries to connect to it using toad, it gives them ORA-01017: invalid username/password error.
We are using TNS entries to connect. From the same client machine, we are able to connect using SQLPLUS and SQL Developer using the same TNS entry. However, its not working on TOAD.
Toad Version is 9.0.1. Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks.Hi Muneer,
My answer is arriving to this forum late, but I'll tell you what is happening to benefit others who have this issue. Older versions of Toad convert the case of the password to upper case when they attempt to authenticate to Oracle. Versions of Oracle prior to 11G had case insensitive passwords so it did not matter. But when 11G came out with it's case sensitive passwords, Toad could no longer authenticate. You can test this yourself by modifying the password for your Oracle account (usnig sqlplus) so that the password is completely upper case.....Toad will suddenly be able to authenticate.
You will find that sqlplus and SQL Developer don't have a problem. That is because they don't convert the password to upper case, they just leave it as it is. I don't know why older versions of Toad convert the password to upper case, but that is what they do. Newer versions of Toad fix the issue. I believe that Toad versions 9.5 and later should work. I've also read, however, that 9.5 had issues with Oracle 11G client libraries so you might just want to upgrade to the latest/greatest version of Toad. -
Sorry. I know this is ORACLE forum. But I assume here should be lots of folks using TOAD.
Q1. how to stop a running query?
Q2. how to copy all the data result? in TOAD, the returned data display in grid. I need to copy all into excel sometimes. How to do it?
Q3. besides using ROWNUM, is there anyway to show how many data returned?
Thanks a lot.A1. Change config to run queries in Threads. For V9 its in 'View / TOAD options / Oracle / Transactions. This adds a cancel button to the tool bar when the query is running.
A2. Right click in result grid, select 'Save As.' For Excel, only 64000 rows can be exported.
A3. Right click in result grid, select 'Row Count...'. -
Databse of 1888 Byte Per Record with 259 Fixed Fields Stumped CR?!?
My Database of 15 million records/rows at 1888 Byte Per Record with 259 Fixed Fields STUMPED CR?!
Executive Summary :
I have lots of data. There are 15 million of records in some of my database files. But I need to drill into the data and get counts for each field.
I need to know how many times each data field (row) is populated in a database file. For example, how many of my records have last name? how many have first name? date of birth? etc. I need a simple report made using SAP "Crystal Reports 2011" Workstation type edition that SUMS each data row into a single column output like csv.
My database sizes can range from 1,000 to 18 million records that are in fixed field asci format with 1888 bytes and 256 rows per record! The report needs to SUM each data field or, in the case of a data field with a minimum of twelve tables, SUM each value of a table.
My contracted CR programmer is an expert although she was new to data files this humongous. Can anyone here help us get CR to work on my data? Here was her conclusion, Crystal Reports Fail:
My file is 14.1 gb as well. However, when run through Crystal Reports, it
only returns 2,274,876 records. Therefore, I am going to assume that there
is a Record Limit for Text files of this. I searched through all the
registry settings and there is nothing that appears to be limiting it. I
went online for a while to see if there was any information on it, and just
like when I used to work there, there was nothing concrete. Business Objects
does not physically test this large of data retrieval, therefore they don't
know the exact record limits.
I'm not sure what to suggest, but I don't think Crystal Reports is going to
work for you and I wouldn't have known that from the beginning without
testing your data. I'm 99% sure there is a refund policy on the software, so
you shouldn't have any issues returning it.
Since I only specialize in Crystal Reports, I'm not sure what other software
can handle this amount of data. Possibly Cognos, but you may want to find
out from them or do some research.
If your data were in a database that can run stored procedures (like SQL
Server or Oracle) then you could write SQL to only return the counts. Then
when Crystal connected to the stored procedure, it should work, but I can't
say for sure without testing it. And I don't have SQL Server or Oracle
installed on my machine. I believe MYSQL (the free version) has a limit to
the number of records it can hold and I'm sure 8 million would be over the
limit. Also, I'm not sure if it supports stored procedures. I have used it
once before and found it extremely cumbersome and limited. I think SQL
Server and Oracle are quite pricey, so I don't think that this will even be
an option for you.Hi Shawn,
I actually contacted the same person you did also. Summer was a Report Designer Resource here and knows her stuff and the Report Designer as much as our Developer who wrote it do.
As I suggested in my first reply is to get all that data into a real database, one that can run Stored Procedures to do all the crunching unfortunately is the only way I can see this ever working.
Windows 7 and 8 CPU's doesn't help, 64 bit may but the problem is CR Designer is a 32 bit application so it can't take advantage of the 64 bit memory addressing space.
What you could so is post your question to the forum:
[Business Decision Making with BI|Marketing Library;
This is a forum for managers or anyone who wants to have a non-technical discussion about making informed decisions with analytics tools. Ask questions and share your experiences on how to effectively utilize data to address real business problems. Experts from inside and outside SAP will be monitoring these conversations and offering their knowledge along with the broader community.
Someone in there may have another SAP product that might be able to load your flat file into a data tool that CR can report off of.
I still think a copy of MS SQL 2008 Express is your best and likely cheapest solution and then you can simply import the data into it which it has an Import Wizard that makes it relatively easy to do... Although you may have to break your file into pieces for it to be able to process also.
You need to be flexible on that data source, I doubt you'll find anything that can report off of that huge of text file.
Good luck
