Export to pdf hangs on large reports
Post Author: SueIrvine
CA Forum: Exporting
Hello. I have a Crystal Report that's part of an ASP.net web application written in VS.2003. The report is grouped so it can be run for 1 record or hundreds. The report runs fine for a data set of up to about 100 records. (the report is 1-2 pages long) After this, the export process hangs and never finishes exporting the report. (the file size in my temp directory shows 0) This is the code I'm using to export the report. With a large dataset, it never makes it past crReportDocument.export() Dim crExportOptions As ExportOptions Dim crDiskFileDestinationOptions As DiskFileDestinationOptions Dim Fname As String Fname = "c:\temp\" & Session.SessionID.ToString & ".pdf" crDiskFileDestinationOptions = New DiskFileDestinationOptions crDiskFileDestinationOptions.DiskFileName = Fname crExportOptions = crReportDocument.ExportOptions With crExportOptions .DestinationOptions = crDiskFileDestinationOptions .ExportDestinationType = ExportDestinationType.DiskFile .ExportFormatType = ExportFormatType.PortableDocFormat End With crReportDocument.Export() crReportDocument.Close() Response.ClearContent() Response.ClearHeaders() Response.ContentType = "application/pdf" Response.WriteFile(Fname) Response.Flush() Response.Close() System.IO.File.Delete(Fname) I appreciate any help you can give. I've Googled this issue for the past few hours and have not found anything helpful.Sue in Ithaca, NY
I quickly put this together… You said in the first post you have 3 presets… Have you set the marks offsets in there? It's bare bones NO error trapping in it but you could add that… It would expect your named presets to exist… Just replace my '5mm' and so on with your names…
#target indesign
function exportFolder() {
var i, inFolder, idFiles, doc, offSet, pdfPre, pdfFile;
inFolder = Folder.selectDialog( 'Where\'s the folder of ID files?' );
if ( inFolder == null ) { return };
idFiles = inFolder.getFiles( '*.indd' );
for ( i = 0; i < idFiles.length; i++ ) {
doc = app.open( idFiles[i] );
offSet = doc.documentPreferences.documentBleedTopOffset;
if ( offSet == 5 ) { pdfPre = app.pdfExportPresets.itemByName( '5mm' ) };
if ( offSet == 10 ) { pdfPre = app.pdfExportPresets.itemByName( '10mm' ) };
if ( offSet == 15 ) { pdfPre = app.pdfExportPresets.itemByName( '15mm' ) };
pdfFile = File( doc.fullName.toString().replace( '.indd', '.pdf' ) );
doc.exportFile( ExportFormat.pdfType, pdfFile, false, pdfPre, '', false );
doc.close( SaveOptions.NO );
exportFolder();

SSRS report export to PDF hangs in Abode 9.4
HI,
I have a SSRS 2008 report which get exported as PDF. I render the ssrs report byte[] array as content attachment on to my web page. It renders with open/save/cancel. But on click of the open, the report get hanged. This issue is with the abode version 9.4
Font used in the report is Airal Unicode MS.(this is for different locale) Size of the pdf is less than 150 kb.
Please help.For your case, you may want to look into data-driven subscription where you may be able to run individual report and export them to pdf and have them deliver via email if you have that email in a table. Good luck

Exporting to PDF fails for a report
Hi,
One of my reports no longer exports to PDF. When run through our ERP system it looks as if it's exporting but the progress popup window quickly dissappears. When we go to the location where the exported file should be nothing is there.
I tried opening up the report in the Crystal 11 and exporting from there. I get the following two error messages:
Failed to export the report.
Not supported
This was working yesterday. The only thing I did was to add the u2lbar.dll to the bin folder and copy over the barcode font so that we could display barcodes on this report. However, even if I comment the line to do the barcode I still get the same problem.
Thanks,
JonThe font you are using probably doesn't have embedding permissions.

Export to PDF fails for some reports, but report viewer works
Hi all
Our application produces several different reports.
- Report A can successfully be viewed in the ASP.NET report viewer control and can be exported to PDF
- Reports B and C can successfully be viewed in the ASP.NET report viewer (all pages), but export to PDF fails with a very unclear error message. The stack trace is attached below.
Two days ago, reports B and C have fully worked, and I'm sure by 100% that the report templates haven't been modified since then.
Can anyone explain what is going wrong? Is there some internal logging inside Crystal Reports that can be investigated to find out about the reasons of the error?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Kuno
PS.: The Crystal Libraries under investigation are quite old. In fact, it is a very old application that still runs under .NET 1.0.

please try to find out more details.
You say it is data dependent. Could you be a bit more specific. What data work or do not work ?
As a good test pls see if our samples reports work. They come with a default installation. If you do not have them any more - get them from [here|https://smpdl.sap-ag.de/~sapidp/012002523100005852352008E/cr_xi_xtreme_rep_smpl_en.zip].
Can you display and export them ? Do you get the same error ?
Thanks in advance

Oracle 10g Discoverer Reports & export to xls fails for large reports
Hi ,
We have following configurations:
1: RHEL 5.4
2: Discoverer :Version 10.1.2.48.18
3: Oracle10g Apps Version : Version 10.1.2.0.2
Issue:
Most of small reports works fine ....but when large discoverer reports are executed the page
keeps on refreshing for 15-20 hours but no output ....same for export to xls ......
But same reports works fine in oracle9i for same data voulme....
Observations:
When on linux with top command the processes are monitored its observed that discoverer process
dis51ws dies for large reports after 1-2 minutes ...& the page keeps on refreshing but no output....
for 1-2 minutes it consumes 50-80% cpu utilisation then process disappears & cpu 80% idle ...
It seems that as 10g Apps is installed on RHEL 5.4 ...non certfified OS causing an issue...
Can any one adds more inputs in this regards......
we have checked logs : below are log details :
Below logs gives "Logkeys: exceptions discoiv.servlet_exceptions" for this report ...

Regards,Hi ,
as per Note: 466697.1 ....its an memory error....& need to increase MaxVirtualDiskMem and MaxVirtualHeapMem
But we already have slowly increased MaxVirtualDiskMem and MaxVirtualHeapMem to below very high values ...but the issue remains same.......
as per note we are getting Logkeys: exceptions discoiv.servlet_exceptions error but
after that we are not getting below error ............
Unexpected error in state machine: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError
Hence I presume that its different issue rather than memmory....
Below are pref.txt values..........
CacheFlushPercentage = 25 # Percent of cache flushed if the cache is full. valid values 0 - 100%.
MaxVirtualDiskMem = 9294967296 # Maximum amount of disk memory allowed for the data cache. Should be greater than or equal to MaxVirtualHeapMem
MaxVirtualHeapMem = 4294967296 # Maximum amount of heap memory allowed for the data cache.
QueryBehavior = 0 # Action to take after opening a workbook (0 = Run Query Automatically, 1 = Don't Run Query, 2 = Ask for Confirmation)
Also we have raised an SR & as per SR .............all below settings are tried as per SR except for applying a recent patch....
====================================================================
Discoverer performance is largely determined by how well the database
has been designed and tuned for queries.
A well-designed database will perform significantly better than a poorly
designed database.
Workbook design can also affect query performance.
1. Apply latest Discoverer patch as documented in <<Note:237607.1>>
'ALERT: Required and Recommended Patch Levels For All Discoverer Version'.
2. Increase the maximum JVM heap memory:
In general, the default values for the minimum heap (-Xms) memory and
maximum heap (-Xmx) memory are sufficient.
However, if your organization consistently runs large Discoverer queries
then you may benefit from increasing the maximum heap memory from the
default values.
This is recomended if your users are typically running large queries via
Discoverer Viewer.
Increasing the JVM memory can help to avoid "java.lang.OutOfMemoryError"
in Discoverer Viewer:
Please see <<Note 563960.1>>, Best Practice: Configuring The
OC4J_BI_Forms JVM For
Discoverer Viewer/Portlet 10g Performance And Stability for specific
details.
3. Disable Query Prediction:
Query Prediction provides an estimate of the time required to retrieve
the information in a query.
The Query Prediction appears before the query and consumes time.
Edit the <oracle_home>/discoverer/util/pref.txt on the middle-tier
server and set:
QPPEnable=0
Also set:
QPPObtainCostMethod = 0
4. Uncheck the 'Enable fantrap detection' checkbox.
When the box is checked, every query generated by Discoverer is
interrogated. Discoverer will detect a fan trap and rewrite the query to
ensure that the aggregation is done at the correct level.
Please refer to <<Note:210553.1>>, Oracle BI Discoverer: Fan Trap
Resolution - Correct Results
Everytime for more information on fantraps.
To disable, in Plus go to Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> Fan Trap
settings.
In Viewer go to Preferences and uncheck the box.
5. Disable Materialized Views/Summaries
In pref.txt add parameter:
MaterializedViewRedirectionBehavior = 0
Value equal to 0 ensures that Materialized View (MV) Redirection is
always performed when MVs are available.
6. Improve query performance by optimizing the SQL.
In pref.txt modify/add following parameters:
SQLFlatten = 0
SQLItemTrim = 0
SQLJoinTrim = 0
UseOptimizerHints = 0
If value of SQLFlatten is 1 then Discoverer will merge inline views in
the query SQL where ever possible.
In case of SQLItemTrim, Discoverer will remove unused folder items from
the query SQL where possible and for SQLJoinTrim Discoverer will remove
unnecessary joins from the query where possible.
UseOptimizerHints will add Optimizer hints to SQL if set >
0.Unnecessarily making Discoverer perform these checks consumes
resources and rather than increasing the performance may reduce the same. So unless you feel these checks have to be performed depending on
requirements, assign zero to these parameters.
7. When Discoverer builds a query, Discoverer makes a database security
check to confirm that the user has access to the tables referenced in
the folders. Avoiding this check can save time.
So in pref.txt underDatabase section add:
ObjectsAlwaysAccessible = 1
8. Whenever you are creating conditions, ensure that you match the Case.
This in turn can reduce the time Discoverer spends on changing the Case
and matching.
For example:
option Upper(Department) in (Upper('VIDEO SALES')
9. Ensure that summaries are refreshed periodically in Discoverer
Administrator.
10. Increase the amount of memory available for the Discoverer data cache. Please refer to <<Note 245752.1>>, Explaining Oracle BI Discoverer
Session Memory Management
And Server Cache Settings.
11. Performance may be enhanced by enabling OracleAS Web Cache.

CA Forum: Exporting
Greetings forum members,
My question is, in its entirety: Can a single report (rpt file) create multiple PDF files using the export command, ideally one PDF file per DB record?
In my case; I have a Crystal Report that reads data from a DB table containing ~ 500 records. When I export the report to a PDF file, I get one PDF file, with ~ 500 pages.
What I would like to do is export the report to ~ 500 individual PDF files; One file per DB record. The file names would be based on the table's primary key.
Is this possible?Post Author: Micha
CA Forum: Exporting
Hi,
you need some lines of code, but its easy. Dependend on how to start the generation of your 500 PDFs, you can write an ASP page and start it via Web Browser, or a Windows Script and start it via scheduled job...
Here's an abstract of the ASP code I use:
First, you create a recordset (here: "rsc") which gives you the list of ID fields you want to export, then you create CrystalRuntime.Application object, then you loop through the recordset, open your report (here: "oRpt") and set login info. Then set the selectionformula, so that the report displays only the data of the current ID, e.g.:
oRpt.RecordSelectionFormula = "(" & oRpt.RecordSelectionFormula & ") AND {myTab.myVal}=" & rsc("myVal")
Then you export the report, move to the next record in recordset, and repeat the loop until recordset.EOF. Then you close recordset and connection.

Change in report format after exporting from pdf format to excel format.
Hi,
I got a problem while exporting the pdf format of the Report to Excel format "Fully-Foramtted Grids and Texts".
The format gets automatically changed.
Is there any solution to this problem.Can you give some more details?
Which version are you using (and which patch level - if any).
Also what formatting is default on the reports and what is the default format in excel.
What exactly is different between PDF and excel?
Another possibility is that font substitution is going on?? -
IllegalArgumentException: While exporting to PDF in Websphere 6
Hi,
<br>
We are using Crystal Report XI and Java 1.5. We are using JRC jars to parse the Crystal Report in Server side. From our application we will export the report to PDF. It is working fine for all reports except for a specific report where it gives IllegalArgumentException while exporting the PDF. The same report is working fine in Windows Environment. Only in Linux environment the below error occurred. It will be of great help if any one can suggest us on this.

Export to PDF Error in CR Viewer
I have an intermittent problem exporting to PDF from the Crystal Reports Viewer. I'm using the Java Runtime and the report displays fine in the view. I then click the Export button, select PDF, and click Export. The view screen becomes blank with the single word "Error".
I see nothing in the Crystal Logs.
The timeout in CRConfig.xml is set to 1 minute and JavaServerTimeOut is set to 300. No other values are specified.
Any ideas of what the problem could be or additional tests to try?Hi,
I had faced this issue previously.
This basically happens because your session is expiring in the web server. Try to increase the timeout session to 30 minutes and the print option will work just fine.
Also you would have noticed that the data does not gets refreshed from the source if you are not ending the session. But for this you can enable the refresh button on the Web Viewer using the following option:
CrystalReportViewer crystalReportPageViewer = new CrystalReportViewer();
crystalReportPageViewer.setHasRefreshButton(true);
Once the refresh option has been enabled then there is no need to kill any session in order to refresh the report the refresh button can only be clicked for that .
Please let me know in case the issue has been resolved.

Crystal Reports 10 Enterprise Server Issue - Exporting Large Reports to PDF
Weu2019re implementing a Crystal Reports 10 Server for a customer but weu2019re having an issue with exporting large reports to PDF. The report size that starts to show this issue is roughly 300 pages with 20 records per page. We use the default Crystal ActiveX viewer.
Basically what happens is that the user will launch the report in the ActiveX viewer and the large report will take a while to load, as much as 3 to 4 minutes. The user may then wish to export to PDF. Once they attempt it with these large reports the viewer will basically hang and possibly be processing but will then time-out after roughly 5 minutes with this error:
u201CProxy Error
The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server.
The proxy server could not handle the request POST /thinqreports/THINQCrystalInterface.asp.
Reason: Error reading from remote server
IBM_HTTP_Server/6.1.0.9 Apache/2.0.47 (Unix) Server at lmsproxy.aurora.org Port 443u201D
We believe this error is coming from a server on our network. We have a proxy server between users and the Crystal Server that has a 5 minute time-out for connections. What we want to know is:
- Is there a way to speed up this export to PDF process?
- Should the Crystal Viewer be keeping an http connection alive to the Crystal Report Server while its doing this export process?
- If not, what port does Crystal Viewer use to communicate with the Crystal Report Server?
- Is there something we can set in Crystal to keep an http connection open?
- What is actually occurring during this export process?
Occasionally, we may get the above error when simply launching a report, not just attempting to export to PDF. We presume that is because loading the report into the Crystal Viewer from the Crystal Report Server is taking longer than 5 min.
Anyone have any thoughts? Thanks.
ScottScott,
As this is happening within Enteprise (and I am assuming the report does not time out in the Crystal Reports Designer) I would suggest posting this to the BusinessObjects Enterprise Administration
forum.
My limited Enterprise knowledge would be to suggest scheduling the report as PDF but I don't know if that is a viable option for you. -
Can the Performance Detail reports be exported as PDF without the Detail Table?
We previously generated significant numbers of Performance Detail reports out of SCOM 2007 R2 as PDF files, and the 'Detail Table' did not show.
Now that we are on SCOM 2012 R2, the same reports show the 'Detail Table' when exported to PDF. We report on 6 to 12 months of data, so these tables are huge, and are also useless for our purposes.
Is there some way to suppress the Detail Table when exporting a Performance Detail report to PDF?Hello,
Please see if the method in the following post can meet your requirements:

InCopy hangs when exporting to pdf
Hi there,
We have a few files that are having this issue in that when the InCopy user tries to export to pdf, the program hangs. The InDesign user can export a pdf without issue. The files do not have a known font issue and it's happened on small as well as larger documents. This doesn't happen with all of our files - just a handful... which some are pretty simple so not sure why it's happening...
Any ideas?Dear Jeff,
Please go through the settings:
When using the new Function of 'Exporting to PDF'/'PDF Generation' the following two settings need to be applied/checked:
1. Path needs to be defined via 'Administration->System
Initialisation->General Settings->Path->Attachment Folder
2. The Windows User needs to have write/modify permission for the folder defined under 1.
(To check if the permission is correct, access the folder and check if a new file could be saved)
In case this does not work please do let us know, does this happen also when you export to word.
Moreover, is this user or machine specific?

Report margin on export to PDF
Hi,
I am using SQL Server 2008, Project Server and Report Builder 3.0 and have just inherited an issue.
I have two reports:
D_Subreport: This report contains all logic and detail
D_Report: A report referencing D_Subreport as a Subreport
In one of our SharePoint project sites we run the D_Report, this has a dropdown parameter which allows multi selection. This works as expected - the report displays in the browser with no margins as per the designed report, on export to PDF it has a margin
set, I'm not sure where this is set(?), but it looks good to us.
The problem, when running the D_Subreport from another Project site (no multi select as it runs under the context of the project site) the reports displays as expected in the browser, however on export to PDF there are
NO margins. It seems as though having a containing parent report creates margins within the PDF, running Subreport directly does not.
How do I get it to display using the same margins as D_Report?
ThanksThanks.
My problem was that one report had margins and the other didn't - Plus it turns out a Subreport's margins are ignored by the parent report. I had to create a duplicate report in our scenario.
