Export versus Archive

I have recently upgraded to the New MobileMe Calendar which I synch with iCal on my MacBook and with the calendar app on my iPhone. I have always backedup iCal using Time Machine. With the new MM Calendar, Apple states, "Important: Do not rely on traditional methods for backing up calendar data, such as exporting the iCal database, Time Machine, MobileMe Backup, or iTunes backups of iOS devices." This can be found in the support article
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4226
The backup process says to Choose File > Export > Export (versus File > Export > iCal Archive). My understanding is that when using Export > Export, you have to export each of your calendars separately, whereas with Archive you get everything with one export.
I guess I don't understand the difference between export and archive as far as the resulting file is concerned. And, the main question is, can I use Archive to backup and then, if necessary, restore my calendar data.
Also, if at some time in the future I decide not to use MobileMe any more, I would like to be able to restore all my old calendar data.
Thanks.

Anyone has an answer to this question.
It's still a question mark for me too
Cheers

  • Error in Export Content Archive

    Hi,
I am trying to export Content Archive using Archiver applet present in the admin applets but its getting failed, while the Table Archive was done successfully.
The error I am getting is as below:
"Export error for archive 'ContentArchive_13June'" in collection 'Eb_UCM': Aborting. Too many errors ".
And the logs present in the log files are:

Error     6/14/2011 11:09:27 AM     Unable to publish the schema. Published schema directory could not be swapped into its proper location. [ Details ]
I have also tried after changing the file permissions on /home/ucmuser/oracle/ucm/server/weblayout/resources/schema.work, but the same logs are comming.
    Please help.
    Thnks,
    Sunny

    Hi,
Add Configuration Variable MaxArchiveErrorsAllowed=500 at config.cfg file and restart content server, try to export your archiver.
If you still getting same error message like "to many errors" then increase value 500 to 1000.
    Thanks,

  • Best way to export for archive, DVD

    Hi,
I'd like to export and "archive" my sequences,  audio slide shows,  (in anticipation of moving on to FCP X or whatever appears right in the next few months...) and have seen on this forum that i'm best using Quicktime, not QT conversion. For my internet movie I used QT Conversion (H264>29.97fps> auto keyframe> 5000 ktbist/sec>1280x720>scale letter box // Audio: AAC 44.100 kHz> 320 kbps. Vimeo took over from there,  and it came out fine.) Seems like QT doesn't ask for me to make all those choices. So do I just hit the button -- then use iDVD if I want to place on a DVD?  Yes, I'm a newbie, so give me some steps here...
    Thanks.
    Mary

Thanks..I guess it will be apparent when I go in there. Sounds like no major decisions to make.

  • Can't Export iCal Archive to iDisk

Why can't I export an iCal Archive to iDisk?
    Please try this:
iCal  >  File  >  Export  >  iCal Archive     and select iDisk as a destination.
Such an export attempt just hangs for me in Snow Leopard and Lion.
The same type of export works with Address Book:
Address Book  >  File  >  Export  >  Address Book Archive    then select iDisk as a target.  This works.
Can anyone please explain why this doesn't work for iCal?

Well, since I use Earthlink through Time Warner, I am running on similar circuits. Do not have another option. That may be part of the problem.
Apple's interface is another. I consider it to be uninformative. The window appearing causes it to seem that the file transfer took place quickly however if you look more closely and think about it, the transfer rate for the display is too great to be true.
    Oh, I wish I had a T-1 line but....
Part of the problem may be that my internet connection is through Airport. An Airport network is not that fast.
After a long period of frustration in transferring files between my computer and that of my wife using Airport, I decided to heck with it and connected us and our printer through an ethernet Gigabit LAN. The speed is great!!
One of these days I will get around to drilling holes in the wall to run the cables through closets, etc., rather than along the hall.

  • Export failed, archive corrupt error

    Hi -
I am getting an Export failed, archive may be corrupt error when I try to export my EAR from Workshop 9.2 MP1. (Oddly enough, if I build my EAR with the exported Ant scripts, that works. I can deploy and run this EAR). An the EAR is truly corrupt - when I deploy and try to run it WLS complains about the web services' PortType files ClassNotFound.
The error I believe is a result of the web services' PortType file being inserted into the EAR as a .java file vs. a .class file. For example, if I have a web service called MyWebService, in the exported EAR I see MyWebServicePortType.java rather than the expected MyWebServicePortType.class file.
The Workshop .metadata/.log file contains the stack trace below for the export archive error. Looks like it complains about not being able to move resources around (what ever this means).
Can anyone give me some ideas on what might be wrong?
    Thanks!
    Hugh

    Hi
We have seen the same error when there are specific annotations. One instance was that a service control was using a handler annotation and that caused the export error.
    @ServiceControl.Handler(file="soap-handler.xml",operation={"ServiceControlSoapHandler"})
In the project "CommonControlServices", do you use any Soap Handlers in service control or jws?
If so, can you remove the annotation and try doing the build and export and see if it works.
Let me know if this is the case in your app.

  • Exporting Master Archive Copy of Project on Mac

I know, I know. There are like 100 threads on final export and the best ways to do it for archival purposes. But honestly, I'd read one and it would say one thing and then I'd read another and it would say another. I guess that makes sense since there probably isn't the ONE best way to do anything. But coming from FCP, to export a archive copy of your final project you simply selected EXPORT>Quicktime Movie and it would do it all for you with no adjusting or tweaking of any settings necessary. It simply would save it using your sequence settings as a copy that you could use as an archive OR (and this part is important to me) you could take that file and bring it back into Compressor later if you wanted to encode this master copy into other formats (DVD, Bluray, H.264 for web, etc.) with the least amount of quality loss. Its almost as if you had exported the video directly from the original timeline. That's what I'm looking for here.
All that being said, I know there is a "Match Sequence Settings" box in Adobe Media Encoder which one would think would be similar to FCP's "EXPORT>Quicktime Movie" option but I've read in various threads not to use that and it made me nervous anyway because when you select it the "quality" slider is set to 50% and greyed out and the resulting file was going to be .mpeg which I didn't know if that was the best option or not to preserve quality. My original source footage is AVCHD so I've been going back and forth editing native and editing in ProRes 422.  Since I'm on a mac (2011 27" iMac i7 with 16gb ram, AMD 6970M card etc.), I've read of a few options:
    1) Quicktime using the Animation Codec.
    2) The mac version of the UT video setting
    3) ProRes HQ or 422 (however I've also read that this isn't the best option if you want to re-export the footage later into other formats)
Various other virtual and lossless  methods but many of which seem to be for PC users. I am a mac user.
My goal is to have a master copy that will need no more editing but one I can drop into AME or even Compressor to make future DVDs, BLURAYS, High quality H.264 files for web delivery, etc.
While I realize there isn't one answer probably, what are the advantages/disadvantages of the 3 methods above and is there a better way to export a file for archiving and possibly re-encoding later. File size doesn't really matter. Well, within reason. With FCP, an hour long sequence would usually be under 50gb if I remember right. So anywhere in that ballpark (or a bit higher even) is cool with me.
Please feel free to describe in detail the steps to making this MASTER file of the final edit.
    Thank you!

    Jim Simon wrote:
they all lose chroma detail by sub-sampling to 4:2:2.
That's only true of the UT codec if you use one of it's YUV options.  UT also offers RGB.
Plus, with most source material being recorded in YUV 4:2:2 at best, archiving to the same is not a really a major issue.
    Yes I agree Jim.
I personally have a problem/criticism with Ut RGB since it saves in the RGB colorspace. I just don't think it's a good idea with footage being YUV to be doing a rec601 or rec709 conversion when I know for a fact (as a developer) that the transform matrixes are not always correct - 1 of the 3 years of development of x264pro was getting the colorspace handling correct for every possible pixel format that Premiere/AME can process.
I do disagree with the theory that since the source is 4:2:2 or 4:2:0 that you don't need any better. If you do hard cuts and no scaling I'd agree but anything more involves manipulation of the footage as 4:4:4. So, if your long term archive format (ie Master) or short term (ie Diigital Intermediate) is ever going to be manipulated again why damage the result of any of those editing actions (cross dissolves, any Fx, or any Color Correction for that matter)?
I fully acknowlege that we're talking about a very small amount of error - and only comes into play if you're compressing the final Master as pretty much lossless but for me I want a Master to be, well, ... a Master. I (personally) define that as being a perfect reproduction of the timeline without the ability to change the editing/Fx decisions made. It's nit picky but it's what I think since storage is DIRT CHEAP. The salary burn in just reading this thread just paid for another 2Tb. We'll all save thousands of RAW camera files (6-10Mb per image) without any concern for size so why are we even flinching at the idea of another Gb here and there for a Master video file?

  • What's the difference between iCal Export and Archive?

    I want to back up my iCal on my Mac before converting to iCloud. I see via the File drop down menu, I can either;
    File > Export > Export
    or
File > Export > iCal Archive
Apple docs just addresses: iCal Archive for backing up which is fine.
But I was wondering what the Export > Export function is for. Is it a different file format than iCal Archive thus allowing you to import and Export > Export to perhaps another calendar program other than iCal?

Austin, your response doesn't fully satisfy the question. First, while you're right that "backup" would imply that it's a backup, the word "backup" doesn't actually appear in the menu options. Some time has gone by from the original post and the original product names, but the concept of two choices still remains. They now are given as "Export…" and "Calendar Archive…" (previously it was "Export…" and "iCal Archive…").
According to other sources, "Export…" is used to export a single file, to later import to another calendar program or perhaps another computer.
"Calendar Archive…", on the other hand, is supposedly used to export ALL your calendars, and subsequently to import to a new Calendar on a different Mac (or, of course, to reload the current one). It seems to me that someone wanting to take their whole calendar environment off their office computer and get it onto a laptop or a home computer would want to use Calendar Archive rather than Export.

  • How to export an archive query?

    Hi,
I created an archive and I did a bunch of account mapping in my DEV, I was wondering if there's a way to run this same archive (import/export) query in my other system so i don't have to do all that mapping again there?, is this possible? (the content is different so im not exporting content, i just want the whole archive mapping I did and the options i checked to be run the same way in other system).
    Thanks!

    Hi
I think that under the <CS home>/archives/collections there is a file collections.hda / archives.hda and if you open that it should be having the export query that you have set from the applet. Check that out and if that is the one then you can just copy it to the target location and get it working.
I will check from my instances as well and give you the exact we can get this done.
    Thanks

  • How do I export or archive Mail mailboxes?

I used to be able to archive Mail email boxes and they'd have the name of the mail box and would be clearly an archive = I just tried to do so [running Lion] and what comes up is "com.apple.Mail.Backup" = with the icon of the 'old' Apple Backup program.  So, if I go to export [archive, backup or whatever] Mailbox 1 and then go to 2, then it won't have the right name and might get overwritten.
What do I do???  I need to archive or back up a whole bunch of emails and am concerned about losing them etc.

I don't know what was happening but yesterday I went back and did the Export/Archive function and it ended up doing just as I expected, exporting the mailbox as an mbox format =finally!!!  Not sure why it went haywire but all is fine now.

  • Exporting for Archival Question

I want to export from iMovie in the highest quality format for archival on a Western Digital external 1TB firewire drive. I have captured my video from an analog camcorder through a Canopus ADVC110.
    My questions are:
    1. Which format is the highest quality (regardless of size restrictions)?
    2. Which settings under 'options' within this format do I need to choose?

    1. Which format is the highest quality (regardless of size restrictions)?
DV, AIC, and H.264 with an unlimited video data rate , and Apple Animation all produce high quality files. (I tend to prefer the Animatio codec since it seems to render truer "blacks" and more saturated colors but at its fullest quality data rate setting its data rate can exceed the capabilities of my older PPC G5 to handle it.) If interested, here is a link to a file containing a motion comparison of DV, Animation, AIC, and unlimited H.264 in a single player. You can step through the short clip to compare the rendering of the various codecs on a frame-by-frame basis to see if you prefer one over any of the others. Be advised that this is literally four movies in one container and is relatively large file for its rater short duration. (I.e., it take a long time to cache or download.) SAMPE COMPARISON MOVIE FILE
WARNING: You should also be advised that if you archives are to be re-imported to iMovie '08, the Apple Animation compression format it totally unsuitable for this purpose since it currently will not re-export from an iMovie '08 project.
    2. Which settings under 'options' within this format do I need to choose?
I prefer AIFF ("Big Endian" linear PCM for audio. Since video data rate are either unlimited, pre-set, or tied to the quality setting, about the only thing you can change is the display size, whether it is output as an interlaced or progressive file, the frame rate (which should never be changed if it can be avoided), Key framing (which is usually a personal preference but you may want all Intraframes here), and color depth if offered (I usually prefer full where possible). These are areas where there are bound to be differences in opinions as to what "best" settings actually means so I normally advise users to experiment a bit to determine what looks "best" to them.

  • Export versus Image Processor

I have CS6.  I use the Image Processor in Bridge to create jpegs after I process the RAW's in ACR.  It seems to work thru PS.  Lately I've been trying out the Export to Hard Drive in Bridge.  It seems to work a little faster with pretty much the same options.  I have noticed that a few, not all, of the file sizes will be slightly different depending on which of the two methods I use.  The only other difference that jumps out is using Image Processor tags them with 300 ppi where the Export doesn't.  Does anyone know if these two methods are basically the same as far as results?  Any advantage of using one over the other?
    Thanks,
    Dennis

The regular Image Processor does what I need, but will check out Russell Browns' version.  After all, it's hard to miss something if you don't know about it.   I use a couple other of his scripts and they're extremely useful.
I've been using the Image Processor to provide the low-res small size proofs and also to provide the full-res & size jpegs for clients.  I have tried the Export and it seems extremely fast for the low-res proofs.  I do use the full size preview to render both.  I just wondered if one provided a "better" final image for the full-res/sized images over the other.

  • No trim on Video when exporting for archiving

I am using Premiere Pro CS4 with latest updates.
For the first time with CS4 I am using the Program Manager to archive my project.
When creating a new trimmed project  it copies the full clip for every used clip-part in the project instead of a trimmed clip.
When several parts of a long clip are used in the project it  results in a archived project that uses more storage capacity  than the original project.
Has anyone experienced the same issue?

The clips are in .mpeg (HDV) and captured with PPro.
It think you're  right that it has something to do with the format.
I've done a test after converting the .mpeg files to .avi with Cineform Intermediate plug-in  and now PPro doesn't trim or copy any clip file.
This sounds as PPro doesn't recognise some formats.
Still strange I cannot find anything on suported formats in help or internet on this topic.

  • Time Machine: Backup versus archive?

    Hello All,
Still learning much and have searched online through google as well as the support discussions, but can exactly what I am looking for.
I did my first time machine backup (or is it archive?) today.
What I would like to do now is remove the old pics, music, and docs I don't really need everyday. BUT if I do that when time machine does another backup (or archive?) am I correct in that the files I deleted from my mac HD will be gone from the new copy put in the TM backup?
What is the difference between and archive and backup?
How can I update my backups rather than replace them? Meaning, how I just update the stuff that's new from the last backup and keep the old stuff there?
Thank you for any input. I apologize if this is an "elementary" question, but I have been searching for about 1hr and I am done.

There is one very simple rule about TimeMachine - if you want to guarantee that a file remains on your TimeMachine backup do not remove it from your computer's hard drive. TimeMachine backs up changed files every hour for 24 hours. At that time it culls the hourly backups to make a daily backup.
Do you know specifically how this is done?  For example, say TM does a backup at 1PM and I create a file.  When TM does it's next backup at 2PM the file will be there.  Afterwards I delete the file.  (So it doesn't show up on the 3PM backup.)
When TM purges unneeded backups from the external drive, does it "flatten" the entire day or just delete all of backups except the last one?  By "flatten" I mean merge all of the files from that day into a single "daily backup"?  If it did, then the file that existed for only a short time (i.e. it only appeared on the 2PM backup) would still be on the daily backup, with a timestamp that showed when it was last modified.
Then the same flattening approach could be used for weekly and monthly instances as well, thus ensuring that ones data is never actually deleted.
I can see some good reasons why it should be done that way, but also a lot of reasons why it shouldn't be done that way!  For example, I have a lot of temporary files from virtual machines that I wouldn't want kept past the end of the day, yet my proposed technique would keep them... forever.
(Btw, I generally buy whichever drives seem to be least expensive.  WD has the advantage that their drives are 4K sectors while most are 512-byte sectors and there are a lot of advantages to the larger size.  I typically try to buy Hitachi or Samsung drives, although every manu has bad batches occassionally.  I just put four 1TB Hitachi drives into my Linux file server in RAID10 configuration and they've been doing fine.  I typically buy from NewEgg as they usually have good prices, especially if you wait and buy them on sale -- I got my 1TB/7200rpm/3.5" drives for $49.  I use an RSS feed to keep my eye on certain technology.
The macally FW800/USB2 enclosure I bought to use with TM on my wife's iMac causes her machine to lock up sometimes when it comes out of sleep but I don't have any problems with it on my MBP.  Other macally enclosures with the same drive in them are fine on her iMac, such as the FW400 unit; I figure it must be the hardware on the iMac that has a problem with the chipset in that particular external enclosure.)

  • Best Export for HD?

I could use a little help with my final HD export for archive.
footage .mp4 xdcam codec from a JVC camera
I checked "match sequence settings" ... which gave me a .mpeg file extension.  FInished render had a File size under 4G for 15 minute 1080p program.  Doesn't that seem like a small file?  Was this best practice?
I also experimented with H.264 blue ray export with mostly "automatic same as source" settings (but change to VBR 2 pass and check "max render" at bottom) ... but the output listed upper interlace when the source sequence settings listed progressive.
    Export crashed on me.
    What am I missing?
    Thanks.

Thanks, John, for pointing me to the resource.  I have been reading various posts before making my post … but these resources did reaffirm that by checking “match sequence settings” I’m getting a lossless HD version.  I just don’t understand why it automatically applies .mpeg extension.
However, I didn’t really find an answer to my dilemma of making a blue ray h.264 that is progressive.  The manual says:
When set to Automatic (Based On Source), Adobe Media Encoder automatically sets this value to match the field order of the source. (See Interlaced versus noninterlaced video <http://help.adobe.com/en_US/mediaencoder/cs/using/WSb8e30982e628fbecc0e59e6131255b4dd2-7ff 9.html> .)
But when I make export settings (my only option to select now is MAINCONCEPT) … my original says progressive and my output says interlaced upper.
Shouldn’t this be PROGRESSIVE?  I can’t find any other place to select progressive manually.  Or to select any other codec …
Is there a better codec I need to install?
    Thanks in advance.
