Exported Raw Conversion Image Resolution and Assigning a Color Profile, etc

In Aperture 1.1, although I set the exported Raw conversion image resolution to 300 dpi in the preferences, it continues to come out at 72 dpi which is something of an inconvenience. Also, is it possible to assign a color profile to the "exported version" so that it is congruent to my PS CS2 color workspace (if that is what its called). Is this program capable of carrying out a conversion as a background operation? Finally, can the layout windows be configured so that they remember how they have been used in the past? Thanks.

Iatrogenic huh! Cool!
Anyway, I'm not real clear on what it is you are trying to accomplish. Despite your obvious vocabulary skills, there seems to be some disconnect relative to what you are trying to accomplish. You are right that "exporting a version" in Aperture is roughly equivalent to what happens in ACR when you "Open" a RAW image into Photoshop. In both cases you have, hopefully, already done the adjusting of parameters you want prior to "exporting", or "opening". When you "open" or "export" you wind up with an "image" composed of pixels, whereas in the RAW adjustment phase you are just working with a temporary thumbnail and a set of mathematical instructions. Big difference, I suppose is that when you "open" and image from ACR into CS2, the resulting image is truly just pixels and has not had a "file type" applied to the file yet, until you "save" it, while in Aperture, if you "export" a file to CS2, or to the desktop, you end up with the file type already applied. Presuming you "export" a 16 bit TIFF or PSD, there is no operational difference.
I could be wrong, but with the new Bayer Demosaicing algorithms in Aperture 1.1, and the Camera RAW adjustments, you should be able to come up with an adjusted image that is VERY close if not identical to one done in ACR, with the possible exception of lens abberation adjustment. I was very critical of the RAW adjustments in 1.0.1, but I am very happy with the capabilites in 1.1. That said, I think there is still some room for improvement in user friendliness of some of the adjustments such as Levels.

You can specify the resolution for exporting, for document etc but resolution of the raster objects can not be retrieved.
Color space of the raster object can be retrieved using the rasterItems : colorants or imageColorSpace properties

  • Can VESA do high resolution and 24 bit color?

Here is the basic reason why I'm asking:
I have a Radeon 9500 Pro.  While it SHOULD be supported by the open-source "ati" driver, it isn't; my computer kernel panics as soon as anything is loaded, and it has ALWAYS done that (for the year and 2 months I've been using Linux).  The fglrx drivers in Arch broke around 8.9 so I switched to Ubuntu 7.10 because those were the last fglrx that let me get to the desktop without a kernel panic (8.04 and 8.10 both kernel panic with "ati" and "fglrx" drivers).  Well, the thing is, I don't want to use 7.10 because it has old software.  I'd like to use newer software, but it isn't easy to do with Ubuntu if I don't want to break something or whatever.
I want to switch back to Arch, but "ati" drivers kernel panic (like always) and as of 8.11, fglrx doesn't support my video card (this is official from Ati).  Vesa works fine, but the problem is the colors look terrible.  I think it only uses 16 bit when I use vesa... it seems to support 1280x1024 okay (which is my monitors native resolution), but if the colors are crap it doesn't matter.
So, in summary, can I configure vesa to use 1280x1024 resolution and 24 bit color depth?  I don't need 3d acceleration, I use my computer for coding (cs major), internet, and watching movies.  Can vesa support those things okay or am I basically stuck with Ubuntu 7.10 until I can get a new computer (god knows when)?

The answer to your post is likely to be fund in the listings given in xorg.conf which lists every vesa mode therein.
Your post is not entirely specific but the modes given in vesa xorg listings are complete.
AFAIK vesa is fully capable altho perhaps not accel capable.

  • Possibility to assign a color profile in the color management tab for more video formats

Presently, in After Effects CS5, in the color management tab of the "Interpret Footage" dialog box the possibility to assign a color profile to footage is grayed out for many video formats.
Formats that allow to assign a color profile include Quicktime/JPEG2000, Quicktime/Motion JPEG A, Quicktime/Motion JPEG B, Quicktime/MPEG-4, Quicktime/Animation as well as various image sequences, like tiff-sequences. (Motion JPEG A,B and Quicktime/MPEG-4 are not very helpful in this context because they have a small color shift when reimported to After Effects.)
Formats that do not allow to assign a color profile include Quicktime/PhotoJPEG, Quicktime/H264, H264 main concept, DVCPRO HD 1080p30, F4V. (Here, H264 main concept has anyway the disadvantage that it has a color shift when reimported into After Effects.)
In After Effects CS4 it was possible to assign a color profile to Quicktime/H264, Quicktime/PhotoJPEG, DVCPRO HD 1080p30, but in CS5 this is no longer possible.
Those video formats that do not allow to assign a color profile automatically are interpreted as having the color profile HDTV (Rec. 709) Y'CbCr in case that the videos have 1920x1080 format; similar applies to PAL formats which get SDTV (Rec. 709) Y'CbCr color profile.
(I did not find anything of this automatic assignment to HDTV or SDTV color profile in the "interpretation rules.txt" file, therefore it must be written into the programme itself.)
With growing popularity of wide gamut monitors it becomes necessary to produce footage and other videos that have a color profile different from HDTV or sRGB. When such footage is reimported to After Effects it has the wrong color and the only workarounds are either to use (in After Effects) the effect "Color profile converter" which necessitates extra render time or to use somewhat unpopular formats, like JPEG2000 that has very large filesize.
Presently many footage is produced in Quicktime/PhotoJPEG and therefore it would be very desirable to allow to assign a color profile to such footage in the color management tab of the "Interpret Footage" dialog box.
Does anyone know why in AE CS5 the video formats Quicktime/PhotoJPEG and Quicktime/H264 do not allow to have an arbitrary color profile assigned (although it was possible in CS4), is it a bug, or does it have a deeper reason.
In this context I have a related question, often I read that Quicktime videos have a gamma tag. Does this mean that part of the color profile (the gamma value) is actually embedded/remembered, like you have it for images where the gamma is part the embedded color profile.
I use AE CS5 on Mac Pro 2009 with OS 10.6.7.
    Thanks,
    Volker

Thank you Rick for this interesting explanations and the links to articles.
In the past few days I performed a few tests in After Effects and it is interesting that you mention that cameras, like the Sony EX3, allow videos to have embedded color profiles. I am not working myself with cameras but either get footage from the internet or sometimes videos from our video department which produces videos with professional SONY cameras, usually I get them in a matrox mxf format.
As far as my test with After Effects show it is not possible to embed color profiles in the videos rendered with After Effects. Independent of the color profile in the working space and independent from the color profile in the output module I always get the same reaction if I reimport videos rendered by After Effects back to After Effects:
In AE CS5 videos made in the formats Quicktime/PhotoJPEG, Quicktime/H264, H264 main concept, DVCPRO HD 1080p30, F4V  are always interpreted as color profile SDTV/HDTV (Rec. 709) Y'CbCr (even if I made them in other color profiles, such as Adobe RGB, Photo RGB, sRGB); and there is no possibility to change this interpretation rule.
In contrast videos made in the formats Quicktime/JPEG2000, Quicktime/Motion JPEG A, Quicktime/Motion JPEG B, Quicktime/MPEG-4, Quicktime/Animation are always interpreted as sRGB (even if if I made them in other color profiles, such as Adobe RGB, Photo RGB, HDTV); only this time I can change the interpretation rule. Therefore if I know for example that if I had selected Photo RGB in the Output module I can change after the reimport the interpretation rule from sRGB to Photo RGB and only then I get again the original colors.
The only exceptions are picture sequences, such as tiff-sequences, where the original color profile is automatically selected in the interpretation of the footage.
Therefore, unfortunately for videos produced by After Effects your advice "If it says something like sRGB and you can change it, in most cases you shouldn't change it because the guess is probably right. If there is no color profile assigned then you should assume that is correct." is not so easy to be applied. You have to know how you did it originally in the Output module and hope that you can change it to the proper color profile, in case that the original color profile in the Output module was different from sRGB and HDTV/SDTV. But it is interesting to hear from you that with cameras there seem to be more possibilities.
For this reason it would be nice if in future versions of After Effects one could change the color profile in the the color management tab of the "Interpret Footage" dialog box also for formats such as Quicktime/PhotoJPEG, Quicktime/H264, H264 main concept, DVCPRO HD 1080p30, F4V.
Of course one can always circumvent shortcomings by using tiff-sequences, QT/jpeg2000, or QT/Animation as formats for storing, which is anyway better for lossless or nearly lossless storing, but the files are then too large and also cannot be played easily with a player.

  • RAW Conversion between CS2 and Aperture``

Has any one done any sort of comparison of RAW conversation out put from CS vrs; Aperture? Recently I've been using CS2 for my port processing work and really have noticed that the CS2 processing seems to be much clearer, better tones, and detail. Lately I don't seem to be able to get a decent print out of Aperture, I've been using it since it first shipped and I know it fairly well, just feels like I'm in some sort of a slump with it.

If you search this forum for deer.nef you will find a couple of recent threads on that topic.
I have done my own tests, converting several images using both apps. My conclusion is that both deliver a good conversion. Some images may come out better from on or the other but you will probably get the best result from the one you have the most familiarity with.
Note: the current RAW converson in Lightroom is not as up to date as the one in the Photoshop CS3 Public Beta. That will change next Monday. Try your own images in both. You may have a personal style that works better withh one or the other.

  • Image resolution and ipad3 retina

I have just screenshot an ipad home screen from an ipad3 (with app buttons etc) and wish to place this into indesign as a mockup for a client.
I have tried so many variations on resolution in Photoshop, making sure its placed in at 100% in indesign but it never looks crisp?
Any suggestions on resolution and pixel size would be much appreciated!
    Thanks,

    Thanks for your reponse Bob,
The image is fine in photoshop and a little worse in Indesign (display performance: High Quality), but when viewed on an ipad3 retina it isn't as hi-res?
The image I screen shot is 2048x1536. Placed in an Indesign 1024x768 document at 50% with Actual 72ppi and Effective 144ppi.
    Is there something I'm missing?

  • How can I extract and save a color profile from an existing file?

I've been give a tiff file with an embedded color profile from a customer. I want to be able to save that color profile for future use. I've tried various methods with no success.

I've tried various methods with no success.
And those were...? You need to be specific. Generally though one would simply install the profile file rather than jump hoops to extract it from an image, where it may be incomplete or lack other critical info like other profiles or specific printer or monitor information it may reference.

  • How to chnge cmyk and also apply color profiles in bridge

    Hi
i want to apply color profile for selceted files in brige

Does any one know how you can adjust the font size (point size) for the file
    names.
Sadly enough you can't chance that, feel free to add a feature request for
that, the more there ask for the bigger chance it will be realized.
It would be great if the colors for the image name (background and font color)
could be changed so the contrast could also be increased so it is also easier
    to read.
And this the cheerful part, go to Bridge preferences General tap and play
with the sliders for user interface and Image Backdrop until your satisfied.
BTW using the slider for thumbnail size bottom right of the Bridge window to
increase the thumbs does not increase the font but makes it nevertheless a
    little clearer.

               ParameterBlock pb = new ParameterBlock();
               pb.add(ss);
               RenderedOp rm=JAI.create("JPEG", pb);
               result=rm.getAsBufferedImage();
return result;it able to split images but the quality of images are poor it losts its original color format.
can any one have any idea how to do it while retaining the quality of image color and resolution
    Thanks in advance
    Umesh

The JPEG you are reading is a cmyk color space one. They're not common, but they do occasionally pop up in a collection of random jpeg images.
The default JPEGImageReader that comes with the jdk cannot read them. And it will throw an exception - the exact same one you got - stating it can't. JAI's behavior is a little worse. It will read the image without exception, when in fact it to can't read it. It doesn't handle the cmyk aspect right, so you get a messed up image.
The native JPEGImageReader that comes with installing [JAI-ImageIO|https://jai-imageio.dev.java.net/binary-builds.html] can read them. It appropriately decodes the ICC_Profile embedded within the JPEG and you get a cmyk BufferedImage. But if you wish to render this TYPE_CUSTOM BufferedImage, go grab a coffee while you wait for it to slooooowwwllly paint. You'll have to do a ColorConverOp to turn the cmyk BufferedImage into an rgb one (so Java2D can render it fast).
Having done all this you'll find that 1) ColorConvertOp makes the image too bright and 2) The native PNGImageReader that comes with installing JAI-ImageIO has an affinity for returning TYPE_CUSTOM BufferedImages (arggg!!!).
I'll help you fix points (1) and (2) if you get that far. Maybe the best choice is to simply give up on cmyk jpegs. They're only used in printing press environments, and people only use color space aware applications (like Photoshop) to manipulate them in any meaningful way.

  • What export format for best resolution and 4:3 aspect ratio

    Team,
I am putting together a DVD for my son's hockey season. It is a mixture of Livetype stuff, imported DV clips (Not HD), and using a program called Photo To Movie for my photo montage's.
I have about 2 mins of livetype stuff, and about 2 mins of an export from "Photo to movie" in iMovie DV (NTSC) format
Now I'm doing a few dry runs to see if this newbie can get this to DVD using iDVD. Now when I burn it, and I play it on a standard DVD player on a standard 4:3 ratio TV, I'm seeing a black bar on the top and on the bottom.
The only way I get those bars to go away is if I export from FCE in Streaming DV format (export using quicktime options and choosing DV Streaming (then imported into iDVD), but I'm feeling my quality is lower as a result. Am I off here? Is there a format that has high export quality .
I'm new to mac, and am not accustomed to "Exporting" and "Importing" and maybe I'm screwing something up during those events. I just think my video quality may be suffering because I can only get DV Streaming to not have the black bars when burning with iDVD.
Any advice would be appreciated asap.
    Thanks!

I'm exporting from FCE and I then use it in iDVD. My brain is fried, and I may have not been clear on the following: I export from FCE using File => use quicktime conversions.
Now when I export to straight-up Quicktime (not use quicktime filters), and then take that Quicktime file into iDVD it gives me a "Widescreen Preview" and when I take the next step and burn to DVD and play on a 4:3 aspect TV it comes out with the black bar on top and bottom (Which I believe is letterbox?)
So that being said, I'm at a loss as to why there are letterboxes in iDVD.
    Thanks in advance.

    I found something close. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5924938&#5924938
It appears they are going from "Photo to Movie" straight into iDVD and having a similar issue. The big difference is that I'm using FCE before I go to iDVD.

  • Understanding image resolution and appearance across devices

    I used CS6 standard.
Why have some images have soft edges under retina (iPad 3) but sharp on a screen (non-retina)?
Does this mean I will have to rework all my images to work with retina display? As most of my images are 72dpi, not sure if this relevant or not?
Can someone kindly advice me the best ideal way to overcome this problem.

Paul, Yes, I can see where you are coming from. You have given me something to think about cropping.
Yeah, the proportions of the iPad3 are a bit off; I usually send out 600x400 pixel images - I find the proportions pleasing - for display on, mostly, social networking sites etc, and while most people up 'til now have considered 1080 vertical to be "HD" (LOL!!!) that's been good enough.
The Retina Display on both the iPad and MacBook Pro, is something of a game-changer image quality wise; we're now hearing rumors of an iMac with a Retinal Display! While that's still in fanboy nerdgasm territory - I've not seen any leaks out of the Apple supply chain about them having been sent sample displays - I think it really is just a matter of when, not if.
Mind you, I for one will be happy if these new HiDef displays dissuade people from posting their scuzzy fonecam pics all over the web (LOL!) as c.pfaffenbichler indicated above, pixels is pixels!!!

I'm working with Photoshop CS4 and one feature that I really liked was the fact that no matter how much I zoomed in or out of an image, it never looked pixelated or distorted. Unfortunately, this has suddenly stopped working. Some zoom levels look fine, but every other one looks really bad.

  • Lightroom 4.4 export color profile issues

    Hello,
My problem is that when I export JPG's from Lightroom (100% / sRGB / sharpen for screen) the picture seems to lack contrast and the colors look less saturated (Looks like this everywhere, including Windows Preview, Firefox, Photoshop..). If I select Soft Proofing and sRGB, the colors look correct.
Also if I take a screen capture and save it as JPG, the colors look similar to my preview in Lightroom.
I have tried to export in sRGB, Adobe RGB and ProPhoto RGB color profiles but none of them looks the same as LR preview.
    Thanks

This looks like Lightroom is choking on a bad monitor profile, especially if Lightroom and Photoshop are not in agreement (because they should be, always - but it can happen that they react differently to a bad profile).
Is your monitor calibrated/profiled? What calibrator? Or if not, are you using a monitor profile provided by the monitor manufacturer? (they're sometimes defective).
Export to Adobe RGB and open it in Photoshop. Put Ps and Lr side by side and make a screenshot of that. If they're different, I bet it's the monitor profile. The reason for testing this with an Adobe RGB export (and not sRGB) is to rule out any normal gamut clipping.
