Exporting AAF for Pro Tools.

So I got an OMF from FTP into STP with no problem, only to find that I couldn't export it again - hopefully a feature in the new STP? Anyway, my only option was to export an AAF (don't have the original FCP timeline to work with) - this audio needs to go to Pro Tools.
But my Pro Tools guy is saying he can't do anything with the AAF file if it's not consolidated into one file - like the OMF normally is.
So - is there a way to export a consolidated AAF? I don't see the option.

Our round trip workflow works, but still hoping for a better alternative in the future.
Duplicate & Rename the sequence for export (just a good habit to have... "videoblah.002, 003, etc). Then clean up any potential audio / video problems; clips that are not enabled, duplicate audio, delete blank tracks, and all the stuff the seems to crowd in the back of my timeline.
-It is a good idea to label your audio tracks for transfer (right-click> rename)
After that I export an OMF. (File>Export>OMF) and select the settings below:
That's just audio so for video, I export a quicktime H.264 video for ProTools DVtoolkit (video import plugin).  Protools will except H.264 .MOV files, but it will not ingest H.264 .MP4's.  It will also handle 1920x1080 files, but if I am rendering out a long project I like to keep the file size smaller by cutting the resolution in half or more.
The audio guy then takes it from there and gives me back a 24-bit single track audio wav file.
Thus far it seems to be a workflow, but if I want to go back and make changes, then either I have to do it all over again, or tell the audio guy specifically what needs done.
All in all, it's not efficient as using a roundtrip workflow such as AVID > ProTools and back again in AAF form.
Hope that helps.

  • Having trouble with DV NTSC export file for Pro Tools.

Pro Tools only takes NTSC format video. For some reason every single DV NTSC file that has been exported freezes in a certain spot and in other portions tends to flicker. I'm not so sure as to why that is. I tried exporting it through the QuickTime Movie option which always works, but gives me the previously stated problems. I tried exporting it through the QuickTime Conversion many times as well; the problem with doing it with this manner is that the video is just white, although the sound still works. I've rendered everything many times. At this point I was thinking about reimporting the raw footage from the P2 cards.
Has anyone encountered this problem? Or have any suggestions? At this point I'm not sure what's wrong.

  • Fastest quicktime export settings for pro tools?

I need to export a heavy movie (42 minutes, 6 video layers, a lot of color correction effects) for the mix. I need to do a quicktime, and it doesnt need to be really high image quality.
I tried exporting a .mov with dv settings but Premiere encountered a problem and shut down. Now I need to export this really quickly, ideally under 2 hours. Which are the best settings? Everything I try has more than 8 hours time remaining.
Many thanks in advance for your help.

Turn the effects off, that may help.  (I assume this is just for timing issues, and doesn't nee to be the final 'look'.)

  • IMac requirements for Pro Tools 10

    Hi guys,
I'm currently working in a music studio as a producer. I've always been a Windows guy but as Pro Tools on the Mac is an industry standard, I need to migrate. I've never owned a mac before. I'm strongly swaying towards the iMac 27" with the 2.7ghz CPU and 4gb of ram. My question, does this system have enough punch for Pro Tools 10? I will often be using 10-15 tracks each with varying VSTs. Would this system struggle?
    Many thanks guys :)

Hello Joel, & a wam welcome!
27" should do it, but I'd go for the 3.4 GHz i7, add the 2 GB Graphics option, extended AppleCare, & add More RAM yourself, as much as you can afford, up to 32 GB...

If you’re using Pro Tools HD 10, you’ll need a minimum 4 GB of RAM, but 8 GB is recommended (even more will be helpful if you want to use the new Extended Disk Cache functionality in Pro Tools HD 10).

  • Sonnox plug-ins for Pro Tools / Audio restoration

Is anyone using the Sonnox plug-ins for Pro Tools for audio restoration? If so, what is your opinion?

Welcome to the world of Logic !
I would recommend the M-Tron Pro and VSE both from G force for strings , flutes , etc. http://www.gforcesoftware.com/index.php
And Maybe some very simple less polished sounding sample libraries for bass and drums which you could load right into the esx-24 sampler in logic ,but I can't recommend any since A: thats not my style so I don't know the names of some I've heard and B: Sample libraries are a very personal choice.
I would recommend that if it looks flashy it's probably not going to produce than salt of the earth sound your after though .

  • Avid Format Compressor Export for Pro Tools

Pro Tools now has support for Avid Media Files - to play out their I/O Box - The Mojo. Unfortunately, they have to be in a proprietary format; near as I can tell, MXF, AAF, or OMF.
I can DL the Avid Codecs, and Compressor can use these, but is there a way to export from Compressor in an OMF, MXF, or AAF Format?
    Thanks!

I have always found that a simple .dv file is the most user friendly in a ProTools Suite.
I use these in conjunction with OMF exports of audio and it works flawlessly.
I am on a PC so not sure how that impacts in your  Mac workflow.

  • How do I export detached audio files as separate files, for Pro Tools processing?

My project is a live band performance. I have every song as a separate Event with associated audio. I have detachd all the audio from all the video Events. I now want to Export the audio files to Pro Tools for editing, then Import the edited audio back into FCP X and snap the edited audio to the associated video Events.
My problem is this: FCP X keeps exporting the audio as a single large WAV file, rather than as separate WAV files. In fact, the video events are separate, and so the audio associated with the video Events are separate.
I first renamed the Role of every audio file as "Music", then did a Share --> Export Media of all "Music" audio Roles. After exporting, I found it was one large WAV file, rather than separate files of different sizes.
As a 2nd try, I created Sub-Roles for each audio clip, and named each one with a distinct Sub-Role name. I then Exported all these Sub-Roles (yes, tedious). The result was that every exported WAV file was the same size, the same as the file size in my first try. The only audio that could be heard in each file was the audio in that particular song, but FCP X still created the very large file with silence in all the rest of the file. Since the file lengths don't match the original audio fil lengths, there will be a problem when I Import the edited files back into FCP X and want to Snap them into place.
    Question:
How can I export the individual detached audio clips as separate files, the length of each file equaling the length of the original audio file in FCP X?
Do I need to separate the detached audio into separate Layers visually in the Project Timeline, so they are not touching? Or does this matter?
    Help!!

    No.
You need to explore Compound Clips. This workflow may or may not be of help.
Select an Event with clips in it and press Option+G to make a (blank) compound clip.
Select the Event Browser, create a new Event and call it 'Effects'.
Drag the Compound Clip into this Event.
Right-click the clip and select 'Open in Timeline'.
Select the timeline and press Option+W. This will add a Gap Clip to the timeline.
Select the gap clip and press Ctrl+D then type in the duration you want the clip to be.
Now open a project and select and copy one of the clips with effects etc.
Open the Compound Clip in the Timeline again, select the gap clip and press Option+Cmd+V to paste the effects into your Compound Clip.
This clip is now saved in your Browser and will remain there for you to copy and then paste the effects into any clip in any project.
It's a bit clunky, but it works - and once you learn about Compound Clips, you can work wonders with them. As an example, if you want to add more effects without overwriting the effects in the Compound Clip, simply make the Compound Clip into a Compound Clip (again) and add the effects. They will be added to the original effects.

  • How do you export separate audio tracks for Pro Tools?

I need to give separate audio tracks to my sound mixer but am confused on how to do so in FCP X.
    So far I've:
Set the dialogue roles and stems for each character
Then I went into Master File>Settings
    Selected:
    "Format: Audio Only"
    "Audio File Format: Wav File"
"Roles as: Audio only as separate files"
    "Dialogue"
    Sara
    "Stereo"
And when I export and listen back to the wav file, there is either no audio or I hear select dialogue.
The only thing I can think of that I am doing wrong, is that each characters dialogue is not on the same track like the picture below. The tracks highlighted is of one character's dialogue that I am trying to export onto one linear track to export into Pro Tools.
Can tracks be assigned in FCP X? Or is there a crucial step that I am forgetting tthat explains why the audio for each character is not being exported.
    Thanks!

If you're dumping audio for ProTools, you should be able to export XML for use in PT. Haven't done it myself, but the option's been there for a while now. You should be able to find instructions easily.
If you want to stick with making Roles work, I suggest making sure the roles are assigned properly to each clip. Kind of a super pain in the neck, to go one by one, but ... that's the way. There are key commands for the three default roles, but if you've created custom ones then it's more time consuming. Is that 'Sara' one a custom Role that you've created?
My only thought is you have compound audio clips there. Maybe go in and set the roles on the individual files inside the compound clips. Dunno...
The visual organization shouldn't matter (one track above another). That's the X way.
((In your picture, you say you have some files selected. When I select, I get a yellow border; yours are light green and dark green. What is that?))

  • Problem with video export for Pro Tools

I hired a re-recording mixer to mix my short film in 5.1.  I successfully exported an OMF, and then set to making a video per his requirements:  h264, 720pHD, High Quality.
Initially I chose an h264 YouTube 720p 23.976 preset.  The re-recording mixer told me although it would open on his desktop in a quicktime player, he couldn't get it to load into Pro Tools.  So, I next created another video with the h264 HD 720p 23.976 preset.  And again, he couldn't get it to load.
As the export is quite long, I decided to re-compress the file in Apple Compressor.  And here's the weird thing.  The exported HD 720p 23.976 video wouldn't even load in compressor (although it plays fine in Quicktime).
Finally I used an Apple TV preset and exported again.  720p, 23.976.  And this time, the video loaded both in Pro Tools and would open in Apple Compressor.
What don't I understand?  Why the difference between h264 outputs?  What would the ideal "preset" be?

I have always found that a simple .dv file is the most user friendly in a ProTools Suite.
I use these in conjunction with OMF exports of audio and it works flawlessly.
I am on a PC so not sure how that impacts in your  Mac workflow.

  • Renaming files in FCP for Pro Tools

Hoo boy! We just learned from our sound designers that Pro Tools is having some issues with illegal characters in filenames inside our OMFs. Evidently ^ ! / ( ) - ; are all no good. Mostly this presents no problem (does anyone ever use a carat?), but our sound studio (also using Pro Tools, curiously enough) seems to have a penchant for the hyphen.
So now here's the problem: I have FCP sequences chock full of files with hyphens, and I have to be able to export the audio into OMFs with no hyphens. I'd love to find out there's a very smart and easy way to get around having to manually delete illegal characters (in the browser, of course) in 400+ files.
    Any ideas?

you can do this by exporting an XML of your sequence , the basic premiss is:
open xml file in a text editor and do a find and replace on one of the known clip names
replace every instance except the "parthurl" item
    save changes
double click the xml, tell fcp to create a new project and check the reconnect media box
everything should be exactly as before except the clip name should be changed globally, reveal in finder should still link back to the original file
... i was sure i'd seen a new release of a utility to do this just the other day, but can't seem to find it now ?

  • How can I export midi to pro tools from my iPad garage band

I'd like to take songs I've written in midi on the iPad garage band, export the midi files to my PC which uses pro tools 10 so I can work on them more there, and use the score creator...here is why, when I sit around and write a song on iPad, I'm using virtual instruments, I'd like to be able to first, have more power..ie pro tools..to mix the tracks, then also be able to print sheet music from the midi so I can recreate the midi tracks with real instruments, when I'm writing the stuff with midi on garage band, it's I can't remember what I played where by the time I've moved the midi notes around a little etc etc..and I'd like the actual recording to be real instruments not virtual, as I want a very professional sounding recording.. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance

If the folders were created in the Photos app on the iPad, they don't really contain copies of the photos. They contain pointers to those photos that allow them to appear in the albums that you create. Consequently, they cannot be imported to the computer. Those albums are for local organization on the iPad only And cannot be imported.
You should be able to select the indicidual phots that you want to import, as far as I know. I can do it on a Mac using iPhoto or Image Capture, so I assume that Windows will allow you to pick and choose which photos you want to import.

  • Trying to run Tiger on an external drive for Pro Tools LE on a new iMac...

okay, i am buying an mbox2 that runs pro tools LE (which, as we all know, is not yet supported by leopard), and i am also buying an iMac 20-inch 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT with 128MB memory (with leopard pre-installed). i've read in some forums that people have been formatting an external firewire 800 drive an installing tiger on it so as to use it as the startup disc when running pro tools LE. i basically have two questions regarding this:
    1) does anyone think this would not work? why? and
    2) will i be able to install tiger on the external drive using my macbook pro osx install disc that came with my laptop? (it's a tiger 10.4.8 install disc, but it does say "macbook pro" on it, so i'm wondering if apple doesn't allow you to install these on anything other than the laptops). my laptop is a macbook pro 2.16 GHz intel core duo.
thanks in advance for your help. please let me know if there's any other information i need to provide.
    -mike

I run my Pro tools from an external drive on my iMac and have no problems. Digidesign say this:
+To use Pro Tools LE 7.x currently, you will need to boot from a Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) startup system.+
+If you choose to upgrade to Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard), you will need to install Leopard on a separate hard drive or drive partition.+
+If you purchase a new Mac with Mac OS X 10.5 preinstalled, you will need to install Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) on a separate hard drive or drive partition.+
+If you are purchasing a new Mac with Mac OS X 10.5 preinstalled, check with Apple to see if your computer is able to boot from Mac OS X 10.4.+
You may well have problems using your MBP disks however. I would suggest buying a copy of Tiger.

  • New Mac Mini, iMac, or old Mac Pro for Pro Tools?

I asked this in another thread, but just want to get more input from older Mac Pro users from different years (2008-2010..)
I need to upgrade my Mac and am wondering what experiences everyone has had with different options for running Pro Tools and other professional audio applications.
The FW800 port on my iMac recently broke, and rather than spend a lot on getting it fixed I've decided to just sell it to someone who doesn't need firewire and upgrade.
I'm trying to decide between a newer iMac (3.1 or 3.4 GHz) with thunderbolt and USB 3 (but no FW), a new Mac Mini, also with thunderbolt and USB 3, or a somewhat older Mac Pro (2008-2010) with at least a 2.8GHz processor. Any thoughts from those of you who have used any of these, or who know more about computers in general than I do? Thanks.
Another option a friend recommended was looking for a 2011 iMac as they have both Firewire and Thunderbolt, since my audio interface runs via FW.
    Thanks!

Might want to ask this on a ProTools forum as well.
    fwiw I have a 4 core MacMini Server w 8GB RAM and a 2008 MacPro 8 core w 16GB.
The Mini is used as a general file and A/V server when not specificially tasked with Final Cut Suite efforts.
Unless I have serious Compressor processes running (e.g. converting h.264 to an editable format) that draws on the full cores, the mini can do a good job keeping up with the MacPro.
What the mini won't do is take 3rd party cards or drive multiple large monitors but for digital audio it ought to be fine with thunderbolt drives.
    Good luck.
