Exporting and dvd quality

I have built an hd project in premiere using the AVCHD settings. When I go to export my project, I export it using the h.264 export templete using CBR at 8 to 9 on the sliders and everything else I leave as is. My exported video is great on my 23" LCD monitor being played through media player. It covers the entire screen and is crystal clear. When I go to build my dvd in encore, I let encore select the best encoding option and build my dvd. When I insert the dvd in my players, the result is not near the quality as my computer playing it in media player. It doesn't fill the screen nor is the quality there. I have played it in a Toshiba HD dvd player as well as a Panasonic Blue Ray with the same results. I thought maybe it was something encore was doing in the conversion, so I used TMPGEnc Authoring Works 4 to build my dvd. The quality was somewhat better, but still had the black letterbox around the video.
What am I doing wrong or is there something I can do different?
I am using CS5 premiere and encore.

Hi William,
I would have to ask why you are exporting to H.264, if intending to make a DVD? Then you are creating an extra compression step in the process, taking an already compressed file and then recompressing to MPEG-2 for DVD.
From Premiere, use Adobe Media Encoder and choose an "MPEG-2 for DVD" format, with "NTSC Widescreen High Quality" preset (or PAL, as applicable). If working with Progressive source footage, then of course choose a Progressive preset.
Set the data rate according to program length, with your choice of CBR or VBR, and be sure to check the "Maximum Render Quality" button at the bottom, as this helps with the downscale quality. Rule of thumb is 560/minutes=data rate, not to exceed 8 for video stream. Maybe round result down just a bit for safety margin.
In Encore, use "Import as Timeline" and import the resulting .m2v video and .wav audio files. Any chapter marks in Premiere will also come in automatically.

IMovie and DVD Quality

Hello,
I tried to burn a dvd (iDVD) with 3 short movies (2 min).
- 1 movie imported (as Large) from a Canon HG10 Camcorder (AVCHD) and exported to the media browser (as Large) for iDVD.
- 1 Movie imported from an old Sony minidv camcorder (SD) and directly used in iDVD (.dv file).
- 1 Movie from the same Sony camcorder and exported to the media browser (as Large) for iDVD.
My problem is that once played from the DVD, the quality of the first movie is very poor (not smooth, picture quality, ...). In fact the second one (from SD .dv file) look far better (and actually very good).
How can it be ? I know that you cannot burn HD content on standard video DVD without converting it to SD, but how can the resulting quality be so poor, not even approaching standard quality of an old SD camcorder ? I'm also aware that i didn't import my movie from the camcorder at full quality (1920/1080) but 960/540 should be enough for home DVD quality.
Remarks :
I tried to burn the first movie from the original (and very large) .mov file instead of the media browser file but same problem.
The quality of the third movie was also very poor.
Am I missing something ?

I have a HDD camcorder (MPEG-2) and have been experimenting with different workflows in the past few days, and here is what I found:
*A) Camcorder (MPEG-2) --> iMovie08 --> Media Browser --> iDVD*
Picture is blurried, colors look washed out. Not much, but catches someones eye (ie. my family)
*B) Camcorder (MPEG-2) --> MPEG Streamclip (convert to DV) --> iMovie HD6 --> iDVD (direct export from previous).*
This worked good, and the quality is very close to original, played on TV directly from the camcorder. The only thing I did not like is lengthy process of converting to DV + importing to iMovie HD6. One note here ... When converting to DV in Streamclip, "deinterlacing" setting should be checked! Otherwise, the edges become jagged.
*C) Same workflow as 'A', but prior to importing clips into iMovie08, I changed the quality setting in QuickTime preferences to "Use high quality video setting when available".*
Now, quality wise, 'C' = 'B'! There has been a lot of discussions on this topic, for iMovie08+DV content, but it seems that works with MPEG-2 as well. Perhaps (I'm far from expert) iMovie08, during conversion process (ie. for media browser, or internally) uses some of the QuickTime help, regardless of whch export (share) option is selected. I also noticed a difference in processing time (longer), when preparing the project for media browser. I may be mistaken about my speculations, but difference in quality is very pronounced.

Yet another question about exporting and video quality

Kind people,
I know this question has been asked many, many times, and I have searched and read up of the topic, but I would also like to ask it.
I shot my video on a Canon Vixia HF10, downloaded it to Final Cut Express to edit, exported it as Quick Time Movie, dropped it in iDVD, then played it on my TV and the quality was…..not good. The video was a little fuzzy and there were ghosts. Are there any settings I should go back and check in iDVD.

Exporting to DVD - quality settings

Hello
I am wondering if there are any QUALITY options I need to be considering when exporting a final story in the timeline to a DVD for stakeholder distribution? (the type of quality you see when you play the footage from the video camera direct to the TV with a cable is the quality I am after) - or the highest acheivable.
I have used 'Share' / 'DVD' and followed the prompts - that's it. It asks me to insert a DVD then burns the DVD. I just want to make sure, am I missing anything?
Also, when it comes to producing around 1000 copies of the DVD, what would you recommend would be the quickest way to do this?
If I have the story on my final cut software do I have to use my computer to burn the DVDs or can I somehow transfer the story and have another company burn the DVDs for me?

If control over quality is a priority, you need Compressor. You can then test various settings to achieve the best possible quality for your movie.
If you 're thinking of 1K copies, contact a replication house – either a local one that you can work first-hand with – or one of the many online disk services. They will have different requirements, which they'll provide you with.

Best export for dvd quality using final cut express hd?

hey guys
i have final cut express hd...what would be the best export settings to get nice highquality dvd?
i am going to put about 25, short 5 minute clips in the dvd..will it be able to fit and all be a nice quality?
any suggestions?

Yes, provided you use dual layer DVD-R and your burner supports this newer media.
Otherwise the most you can burn to DVD-R SL media is 120 mins. (but keep in mind menus, titles, photos, etc all consume space as well thereby reducing the available amount of run time / QT Playback.

Exporting and DVD issues

I have been trying for over a week to find a decent way to export my 54 minute film without a loss of quality without success! I have tried exporting as a quicktime document, exporting through compressor, sharing, exporting as an avi file: no go: I always get a crappy quality! I tried burning a DVD directly throught the "share" option but also got a lousy result. DVDs that are as high quality as the original films exist!!!! How can I do this with FCP 7.0.3 ???????? I would like to send my film to destivals and people are wanting to project it in public debates, including in theaters. So I really need a high quality export/DVD. HELP!!!!!!!

Big studio DVDs look that good because they:
1. utilize dedicated hardware to do the conversion to mpeg2
and
2. have a staff of wizards running the system that understand the dark magic necessary to do good compression.
Converting from HD to the standard definition size that is DVD is always going to look worse than the original (on the assumption that the HD was well exposed, sharply focused, etc).
If you start with HDV, the problems become worse.
Try this:
If you have not editied in a ProRes codec based timeline, do so.
Export the ProRes based file from FCP using "current settings". This will export a file at the full HD frame size and frame rate.
Open up Compressor and convert the HD ProRes version to a standard definition ProRes version with FRAME CONTROLS set to BEST.
Once you have the SD ProRes version, use Compressor again to create the m2v and ac3 files necessary to build and burn a DVD.
With a less than an hour project, I'd try encoding with a constant bit rate set at 7 and see how things work.

Flash Export and Image Quality

When I place Illustrator CSx eps files in my keynote presentations and then export to flash it really chews up the images. You would think vector images would fair the best but the lines are very jagged making the presentation look very ugly.
Does anyone have any tips on improving this? I've tried PNG,jpg, etc.. the images I'm using are line art (e.g. diagrams) but it doesn't seem to help using other file formats.
I don't understand why there is no compression control available for flash export....

edit your image in photoshop and experiment with various settings/size. there's no magic high quality small file size setting.
it's a trade-off. the higher the quality and the greater the image dimensions, the greater the file size. you have to decide where those are acceptable.

Exporting and retaining quality

Hi there.
I'm having some issues exporting from Premiere Pro CS5 and retaining image quality. Rather than retype the problem could I ask you to have a look at the following blog post where I break down the problems I'm having and give some examples.

I know there are a lot of options / settings during the encode process that effect the quality of the output and I have tried various combinations including both 1 pass and 2 pass VBR encodes as well as MXF and other transfer protocols but so far have not achieved an export that retains the quality thats shown within the NLE. I guess my ultimate question would be, what codec / settings would you use to achieve maximum export quality?
Any thoughts or tips on ways to retain more quality in the encoded files would be greatly appreciated.

what codec / settings would you use to achieve maximum export quality?
Uncompressed, Lagarith, UT or any other lossless codec. Anything else will incur some amount of degradation.

Exporting For DVD Quality

I have a project I want to burn with iDVD. But I am clueless about the quality settings. What would be the best setting for burning to a DVD? Thanks ahead of time.

Exporting to QuickTime Movie. iDVD does the compression.

Final Cut Express Export and DVD

I created a video with a dancer dressed in black with a black background. Lighting is good and video looks great on canvas. When I export I set compression at H.264 and I've also exported without any compression. Result after using iDVD is a video that doesn't have the same resolution seen on the canvas and hand motions leave a trail or a flutter effect (which isn't wanted). Any suggestions on how to transport the video so it's the same quality and without this "flutter" effect as seen on the canvas.

Use File>Export>Quicktime Movie to create a reference file and drop that into iDVD.
A reference file is one that is not self contained, simply don't check the self contained box in the export window.

Settings For HDV to Blu-ray and DVD

What is the best strategy for avoiding unnecessary rendering and transcoding issues? I edit HDV or AVCHD (from a DataVideo DN-60) in Premiere Pro CS6. I want to output to multiple formats - DVD, Blu-ray and Flash from the same project. I'd like to maximize quality as well to fit project on disk.
I'd also like to know which format most easily transcodes for my purposes. I typically shoot 23.98 or 29.98 fps 1080p, but sometimes 1080i.
I assume Dynamic Link is the way to go, but it doesn't look like the resulting settings are automatic. For example, if I go into project settings after Dynamic Linking a PPro sequence, and choose Blu-ray, I would expect the transcode settings to match the imported project. If it does not, then what should I change the default settings to?

Let me clarify the intent of my original post. I have read in places that it is best to choose export and DVD project settings that match the original footage whenever possible to avoid rendering problems. So, if I shoot and edit HDV or AVCHD footage say at 29.98 fps progressive, then what corresponding settings should I use for DVD and Blu-ray?
I see that with 29.97 fps the progressive option is not available in the Blu-ray
presets. Should I not shoot progressive then at 29.97?
How do I maximize quality of the video while fitting on a single disk? The only way to do it automatically is to Dynamic link, which you advise against. If I manually set exports, then I must calculate all the sequence outputs from Premiere. What then should my priorities be? For starters, MPEG2 Blu-ray or H.264 Blu-ray? What should take precedence, bitrate settings or number of passes?
I am also considering render/transcode speed. How do the above settings affect speed?

DVD's are only 640 x 480 (interlaced), so yes, the quality is not nearly as good. You should probably create your .mov in DV format to best match the DVD format

Exporting to DVD via compressor and DVDSP - fixing poor quality dissolves

Hi,
Im having real problems with the quality of the dissolves when exporting my 59min project out of FCP, into Compressor and then into DVDSP. I exported it out to Compressor 2, used DVD best quality, 90 min, 16:9 (project is for PAL) , had the bit rate 6.5 - 7.5 etc. In the finished product the dissolves are grainy and really noticeable during the transition of 1 sec.
When we were doing test burns, using a reference movie (export/quicktime/untick make movie self contained etc) and burnt through Toast, all was fine. so I know it is not the work done in FCP its the settings or something in Compressor or something in DVDSP? Not sure.
I built and burnt the project through DVDSP and also took the build (Video TS folder) and burnt it thorugh Toast as well and got the same result! Very frustrating and now I have to deliver a sub standard product to my client for a launch tomorrow. They are burning off 50 copies for it. Very upsetting. But before they do the replication of 1000 I want to sort this out.
Is there another way to get my project out of FCP and into Compressor? For example is it possbile to export a Quicktime and full quality? I've never done this and was wondering if it is an option.

You can modify the encoding settings in the DVDSP Preferences menu. There's a tab at the far right labeled "Encoding".
Just to confim - when I import the QT file into DVDSP, do I then just drag it onto the timeline as you would with the M2V file? Then just drag in the AC3 audio file.

Then do I do a 'Build' in DVDSP to get the Video TS folder? Do you normally burn then through the DVDSP or burn in Toast for example.
I normally build to my secondary internal drive first and open that folder with DVD Player, just to make sure I connected everything properly. I prefer to check my project in DVD Player rather than use the built-in simulator, primarily because I can then fast forward my tracks to make sure my jump points and buttons work.
When I'm ready to burn a disc, I burn directly from DVDSP.

Final Cut Pro exports very low quality video to DVD

I tried exporting a timeline to a DVD from Final Cut Pro X 10.0.3 today. Every clip in the timeline was 1080x1920, but the DVD export menu insisted (without offering an option to change settings) that Final Cut export at 720x480. The Blu-Ray menu offers 1080x1920 exporting, though. Is there any way to get the app to export to DVDs at 1080x1920?

Yes, you can create an AVCHD Disc which is basically Blu-ray quality on a cheapo standard DVD.
Select Share>Blu-ray and in the window that opens make sure the Output Device is your DVD burner, not the hard drive.
Note that you will only get about 35 minutes at the highest quality.
If your video is longer the data rate will be reduced but should still produce good quality hi-def up to an hour or so.
You must play the DVD in a Blu-ray player. It will not work in a normal DVD player.

Still images exported to DVD look deinterlaced and flicker on TV monitor

Hi,
I have tried tried almost everything and I still have issues with the still images exported to DVD as sequencefrom FCP 7.0 by using Compressor are deinterlaced and flicker on TV monitor. Please help remove the annoying flicker.
My FCP Timeline Sequence settings match the image resolution:
Frame Size: 1024 x 682 (double of 720 x 480 standard DVD res)
Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square
Field Dominance: None
Compressor: Photo JPG (also tried, DVCPRO-NTSC)
I cropped the original images in Photoshop to the 1024 x 682 and saved as tiffs. They still look deinterlaced in FCP timeline and exported to DVD on my iMac computer monitor.
Final output of DVD will be on this monitor:

Should I crop the images to 450 horizontal pixels or the double of that 900?
How can I match the sequence or the images settings to avoid the flicker and deinterlaced look on that monitor? I am not able to test the image by having the monitor next to computer.
Compressor:
I used custom DVD settings in Compressor for 90 min best quality DVD. Tried the Porgressive and "Same as Source" in Output field.
In "Crop to" and "Padding" I set for preserve source aspect ratio and letterbox area of source.
I followed the advices from below and I still did not resolve the problem. Please is there anythign else I can try?

Things to try (In increasing order of image degradation)
- (in FCP) field order>none
- (in FCP or Photoshop) reduce whites by 10% - reduces overly bright areas
- (in FCP) flicker filter - minimum
- (in Photoshop) motion blur>vertical> .2 - .5 pixels - blurs vertically only
- (In FCP or Photoshop) Gaussian blur> .2 - .5 pixels -blurs both horizontally as well as vertically
- (in FCP or Photoshop) deinterlace - throws away half the image and is generally not appropriate on scanned images

Thank you very much. Yes, there is something else in the sequence, old documentary, 768 x 570 (no field dominance, 25fps, Apple ProRes 422) but the images are more imporant.
make a progressive sequence with square pixels. (I am partial to 720P, 1080 should work – or 540). Choose Pro Res 422
Do you mean that I should make a sequence in FCP with these settings? If yes, how can I set a "progressive" sequence? I dont see a setting for output field in FCP sequence settings, lnly in customizing Compressor output DVD format.

If you have interlaced material, then de-interlace before you bring it in. If you don't have interlaced clips, don't de-interlace.
The images are not interlaced after I crop them, apply motion blur filter in Photoshop but look interlaced in FCP timeline after I import them and even to the same as photos sequence in FCP timeline.
