Exporting document in Pages to a Word doc is messing things up!!

Hi,
Since I bought my Macbook I decided to step over to Pages instead of buying Word. I am starting to regret this now. I just created a new document in Pages, my cv. And as soon as I export this into a Word document the lay out has changed a bit. The lines or tabs do not appear nicely underneath each other but moved. I was told that if I used Pages and I need to send a doc to someone with Word that by exporting it, nothing would be changed in the document itself. But now I noticed that it does effect the original doc. What did I do wrong with saving and exporting? Or was I better of with buying Word in the first place? Thanks!

That is definitely not true. All exported Word documents have at least some differences against the original Pages document. There may be small shifts in the interpretation of font heights or pictures and page numbers that move around.
For simple documents this is rarely a problem. For more complicated it often is. If layout is important, you should always verify the layout using some other Word document reader like NeoOffice or indeed MS Office.
For a CV, I would imagine that you do not want the reader to be able to change it. Unless that is the case, export the document to PDF instead. PDF files retain layout much better than Word documents.

  • When I export documents from Pages to MS Word, Slavic characters (č, š, ž), in the Times New Roman font, show up in a different font (Arial Unicode), in Word. Can this be prevented?

Certain characters, such as those with a caron diacritic (č, š, ž), show up in a different font when I export documents to Word, even though the font I use in Pages (Times New Roman) also exists in Word. When I was working with Word, I had no problem with these caroned characters.

    What version of Pages?
    What version of Word?
I tried this with Times New Roman in both Pages '09 and Pages 5.5.1 and opened them in TextEdit, LibreOffice and Word for Mac.
I only saw what you reported when I opened the Pages 5.5.1 in LibreOffice which leads me to suspect you are actually talking about Word for Windows on a PC.
As usual Pages '09 worked flawlessly even with LibreOffice:
It is no surprise to me that Pages 5 stuffs up the formatting as that seems to be its primary function.

    Hi olivias,
It sounds like there may be some confusion on your system about what application should be associated with PDF files. You can reset filename associations by following the steps in these articles (depending on your operating system):

    hi all,
i've created a page that looks similar to a resume format. i used different pl/sql regions and used the htp.p package to create the page like in html format. now i need to have an option to export / save the page as rdf or doc or rtf format. is it possible to do this?
    thanks.

  • Export problems with pages/ save as word document results in corrupted text

This may be a new problem with Pages as I have not seen this happen with previous versions but, when I export a page made with a template, it ends up with merge problems - headers end up at the foot and invisible text regarding merge showing. When saved, a error box opens saying that merge fields are not save or similar, and I end up with a non friendly .doc file.

  • Exporting a pdf into an editable word doc on iPad

I need someone to walk me thru the process to export a pdf into a word doc for editing on an iPad.  Please?

The OCR is very dependent on the quality of the scan. You might try testing with various scanning options on a sample page. Typically 300 dpi is the minimum for OCR, but some folks like 600 dpi. If the page is clean, with no dust or other imperfections and the text is crisp, you should be able to do reasonably well. It is probably best to run the corrections steps after the OCR (looking at suspects) and editing appropriately.
The conversion to WORD should not be expected to be real clean in terms of retaining format. You need to look to using style sheets in WORD to simplify the format fixes. Then run the spell check and grammer checker (you might end up with a better document than you started with). There is not a lot more you can do with Acrobat.
You do have the options of ClearScan and Searchable Text. In one version of Acrobat, ClearScan used some strange fonts (not system fonts) that did not convert well to WORD. I was able to get a better result with Searchable Text in that case. I have not played with OCR that much, and so am just giving some comments of things I have run into.

  • Open pages with a word doc

I would like Pages to open as my defalt WP App when I click on a word doc. Is there a way to set my system to do that?

Select a Word document. Press Command-I. Under "Open With" use the pull down menu to select "Pages". Click on "Change All".
This should do it though I have not tried it.

  • Pages '09 to Word doc, maintaining graphics in 'letterhead'.

I have Pages '09 (version 4.2) and when I place 'letterhead' graphics into the Pages document and then save as a Word doc for clients to use as letterheads (to print as needed), the graphics in the Word doc come out in low res.  I have tried saving the Pages document several ways, but they all come out low-res in Word.  I need to be able to provide my non-graphic clients with a Word template of their newly designed letterhead.  Help please!

    Just a word of warning
Depending on the version, MsWord may not play nice with .pdfs, something Microsft deliberately did to keep PC users away from a competing file format.
If that happens try using a high resolution .tif file which is a more established Windows method.

  • Pages and Windows Word docs

Does anyone know if you can open Word docs created on a Windows machine in Pages for iPad if you receive them via email? I have tried this with Word docs created in Office 2003 and can't get it to work. The Pages documentation says it supports Word, but I'm starting to wonder if somehow it only supports Word files created on a Mac? Or is it just that it doesn't support older versions of Word like Office 2003? Thanks much.

I've opened Word files created with Office 2008. I'm pretty certain I've opened files made with Win versions 2003 and 2007 (I went crazy testing the first week and naturally I didn't write down everything I did. Now I'm going back and doing some testing over ) What version are you using?

  • Document Generation in MSA - Make Word Doc Read-Only or PDF Documents

    Hello,
The mobile sales client comes with an Document Generation tool to fill Word Document Templates with SAP data on demand.
Because of legal issues, we do not want to allow anyone to be able to modify the generated word document. Using the permission functionality of the word template is not working as it would prevent the Generator itself to fill in the data.
Is there any option to set the created Document to "Read-only" after the generation is finished or to convert the Word document on fly to a PDF version?
As I am not so experienced in VB I would appreciate any code examples.
    Regards,
    Andreas

    Hi,
there are at least 2 different ways to implement your request:
    - before and after the word document is created you can start a word makro (which e.g. disables the document); this would be done in the method "TextGeneration" of the underlying BO, e.g. BOSALESDOCGEN. The code is quite simple, in earlier Word versions it was sth like
    WordObj.ToolsMacro sMacroname, 1
    - you can call any 3rd party SW to convert the doc file to pdf, similar to this thread
    [MSA "Cancel login" functionality;

  • Pages not opening word *.docs after upgrade to Snow Leopard

Just up graded to Snow Leopard and tried opening word documents in Pages and no joy! "This document ** couldn't be opened. I am running iwork09. It was all working fine previously. Any ideas?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Make sure you are using the latest version. For iWork '09 it's Pages 4.0.2 & Numbers 2.0.2. I don't use Keynote, but it should also be updated.
If you're not running the latest versions & Software Update says your software is up to date, make sure the applications are where the installer initially put them. The updaters are very picky. If the location is not where the updater is programmed to look or if the folder doesn't have the name the updater looks for, it will not work. The applications cannot be renamed or moved. They must be in the iWork '08 or iWork '09 folder in Applications. That iWork folder must be named iWork '08 or iWork '09. If it doesn't have the '08 or '09 Software Update won't find them & the updaters won't work.

  • Adding a web page to a word doc...

    Hello,
This may be a stupid question, but I am new (ish) to the glorious world of Apple Mac...
I am trying to add a web window/page to a word document, but have no idea how to do it using Safari/on my Mac.
Does anyone have any idea of how to do this... please?
    Thanks very much...
    B.

Well, you've posted in the Safari for Windows forum, so that's a mistake you want to avoid in the future if you want your topic to get better attention.
But, you can't add web pages to Word documents. There are two other options you have:
    1. Create a hyperlink to the web page in the Word document (this works best if you know that page is going to be there for awhile).
    2. Take a screen shot of the web page or relevant portion and paste that into the Word document in a compatible format (.jpg, probably).
    3. Save the page as a PDF document and send it along with the Word document.
Which of these is your preference?

  • While typing a doc in Word, the spinning wheel appeared and froze the Word document.  I had another Word doc open at the time.  I tried to force quit, but it didn't work.  I would like to save it before losing my work, but the spinning wheel blocks me.

While creating a Word doc, the spinning wheel appeared and won't go away.  Another Word doc was open at same time.  How do I get this fixed while saving my work?

    rollrock wrote:
How do I get this fixed while saving my work?
    Basically, you don't.
The 'spinning wheel' is simply an indicator that an operation is taking longer than it should. It doesn't say anything about why, or even if it's an error or not. If it's in Word, it could be that the app is hung, or it could be that it is waiting for some kind of user input, or input from another app. (My bet would be on the former.) You could go into Activity Monitor, identify the process that's making it wait, kill it, cross your fingers and hope that it would generate an error that would cause Word to return control to the user (you). If you had the expertise, that is, and the moon were in right quadrant.
Realistically, your only option is to force-quit Word. Once that is done, if AutoRecovery was on, then, with luck, you could recover much of your work. Here
    <http://kb.iu.edu/data/ahnd.html>
you'll find a quick overview of AutoRecovery and how it works.
If it wasn't on (it should be on by default), then you're out of luck. Chalk it up to experience, turn it on, and back to the grindstone.

  • Printing a document from firefox web page or Microsoft Word doc ument used to work just fine. All of a sudden I was unable to print a Word document. I can still print a web page. Any suggestions?

I have a document from Microsoft Word that will not print. It's as if the printer is not connected when I attempt with the Word document. I have gone in and deleted any pending documents in Microsoft Word. I have restarted computer, as well as the printer. The printer does not seem to be connecting or responding to the Word program (cannot find spooler) Any suggestions?

I have a problem similar to those posted here, with one difference. With my printers newly installed, regardless of which one is selected as the default, when I try to print from Adobe Reader I receive the error message we're talking about : "Before you can perform a print related task...."
    Here's the fun part.
If I click OK on the message, ALL MY PRINTERS GET DELETED and, I get the windows message that "Spooler subsystem app has encountered a problem and needs to close"! If instead of clicking OK I switch to Task Manager and end Adobe, I'm fine and can print from other programs.
I can "reset" the problem by deleting the files in C:\Windows\System32\Spool\Printers and C:\Windows\System32\Spool\Drivers\w32x86, restarting the machine, and deleting then reinstalling the printers (which show up again after the restart).
BUT, if I try to print from Adobe Reader again, I get the same cycle of problems.
I am running Windows Vista and Adobe Reader 8.1

Can I edit a document that was sent to me, like a template?  I cant seem to figure out how to do this, I am a new MAC user

If you look in App Store you will find Apple's own Pages which can read, edit, and export Microsoft Word compatible .DOC or .DOCX files. There is also another interation of the previously mentioned OpenOffice which is NeoOffice, NeoOffice uses the same open source kernel as OpenOffice, but wraps it in a Cocoa wrapper which provides access to virtually all of OS X's file and data managment features and is one of the fastest office suites avaiable for the Mac.
