Exporting HDV to a dvd problems

I shot a friends wedding in HDV1080i and edited it in FCP. The footage looks great when viewed in this format, but I am having trouble exporting it to a format that looks good on DVD. If I use quicktime conversion to convert it to H264 720x480 it still looks great, but it is incompatible with DVD studio pro. I have tried exporting using compressor in various formats (DV,NTSC anamorphic,and [email protected]) and all are fairly poor quality by sd standards.
I know an SD DVD is capable of much better results than I am getting, and I know the problem isn't the quality of my source footage. I've spent hours in the manual and looking online for a solution, but have yet to come across it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Better quality means you have more bits. Having more bits mean you will have a larger file. If that's too much to accept, then I don't know what to tell you. You may probably choose to compress that MPEG-2 into MPEG-4 with Bi-frames and 2-pass to shrink the size.

Errors trying to export HDV to Camera, DVD-R, DV Cam

New to forum, and been reading thru other posts but haven't found answers to (all) this below, any help?
I have a festival in 2 days and need to get my movie off my mac on to the best possible format, preferably all on one tape (read below):
I'm editing on a 24" imac with Final Cut Pro. I'm trying to output my movie for a festival in two days, but having issues - can anyone help?
1) When I output to my Sony Camcorder HDR-FX1, the movie looks great, just like how I recorded. Problem #1 is movie is nearly 2 hrs long and HDV tapes only go up to 85 mins. Problem #2 - when I play the tapes (recorded from print to video back to the camcorder) direct to a TV or projector, the video looks great - just how I want it. But, when I am doing the print to video when it passes thru the camera to a DVD-R, the blacks flatten and there is a shimmering in the image. It only plays back with the blacks as they should be if I play what I recorded from the camcorder to the dvd-r; if I let the signal pass thru, the black's flatten (in the end, I may have to create a black spot and off to the DVD in two parts)
2) I have a DV Cam deck, but no matter what setting I try, when I try to output the HDV single from FCP thru the firewire, it will only play on the desktop, it won't export to the deck. Any suggestions here, as I can connect the deck directly via firewire and get all 2 hours on there. I am, as I type this, printing to video to the camera, then from svideo to the DV Cam deck, then RCA to a DVd-R for back up. On the camera monitor, image looks great. On the monitor that follows the DVD-R, blacks are slightly flat and shimmering can be seen, esp in scenes that have orange color in them. I am not sure how the DV cam will look until all done in about 100 more mins...
If worst comes to worst, I'll run the showing from the camcorder and do a tape switch 30 mins or so in to the movie, but I'd rather not interrupt the showing, even if brief. I'd rather output from FCP direct to the DV Cam deck, or secondly, the DVD-R.
I can't even record on an LP mini DV on the camcorder, FCP won't export the sequence to Mini DV for some reason, and I have tried many scenerios...
I am also going to try making a quicktime at 720x440 and making a DVD via idvd, hoping the quality holds up. In the past I had made a sample DVD with the 1440x1080 clips and they played great outside of some vertical lines that you could see in some darker spots. But trying to make a DVD since has created that shimmering, and a friend suggested making it 720x440.
Any help on this - getting the best possible looking version of the WHOLE movie on either DV, DV Cam or DVD-R?

Exporting HDV 1080i to DVD

I tried exporting 1080i video using Quick Time Conversion and setting it to DVCPRO50 - NTSC to create a DVD. The DVD video looks very pixilated and jagged on a Standard Def screen. I tried using compressor and it looks the same. How can I export these videos so that they look right?

Try searching for the 'Bonsai' method - gives excellent results from HDV.
Basically you drop your complete HDV sequence onto a DV50 Anamorphic timeline but before you do this set your Video Processing_Motion filtering Quality to Fastest (Linear) - you'll find this tab under sequence settings.
It'll obviously need rendering (although it will render when you export) but you then export to Compressor on your chosen DVD settings - I have a custom setting based on the length of my piece calculated by a bitrate calculator.
This method gives the best results going from HDV to SD and will work with DVCPro HD although you don't have to change the video processing settings, infact don't because it causes fine lines to flicker.

PP CC 14 & AME CC 14 Exporting Sequence to MPG2 DVD Problem

I am trying to export a HD sequence out of PP CC14 to AME CC 14 for DVD. All my settings are set, exporting to MPG2 DVD. In the PP export window, if I choose either "Export" (which renders the files through PP) or "Queue" (which exports sequence to AME and renders the file there) both finished files are Re-transcoded when brought into Encore CS6. That should not be the case. It is transcoding the file twice and producing terrible quality. Exporting to a H264 for blu-ray works fine, only the audio is re-transcoded.
I found in the previous version of PP CC and AME CC (not the new "14" version), the workaround was to render everything through the PP Export Window and NOT send to AME. If I did that, Encore CS6 would show "Transcoded or Do Not Transcode" in the video status window - and once again, would only re-transcode the audio.
Has anybody else experienced this? Or have any idea what I am talking about? How does anybody else export to DVD?
My workaround now is to use the H264 blu-ray file, import into Encore, choose "Max Render Quality," and burn the DVD that way.

This problem is happening when I am burning to DVD, not blu-ray.
When I do burn to blu-ray, the H264 file created in the PP 14 export window works fine in Encore - no re-transcoding.
The MPG2 file created for DVD in PP 14 has to be completely re-transcoded in Encore.
On this particular project, I had both a h264 file and an mpg2 file, one for blu-ray one for DVD. I just ended up using the h264 file for DVD, and let Encore re-transcode that file for DVD. It was better quality than using the mpg2 and have encore re-transcode.
I know it sounds confusing - let me know if you understand.

What is the best way to export HDV from Final Cut Pro 5.1.2 ???

Should I even use the compressor route? i want my to export hdv footage to dvd studio pro and burn to dvd. i want to understand the best way so it looks like the original mini hdv tape.

you can use compressor to encode your HDV footage.
believe it or not, you can obtain stunning results when you encode and output to DVD.
i guess my only questions to you are:
will you want to output a "HD DVD" or a SD DVD?
how long is your footage?
in what mode did you shoot (720p or 1080i)?
what type of footage, overall, would you say you have (fast action paced, slow action, interviews)?
to be honest with you aaron, there isn't really a setting that is a "set all". compression is both an art and science. additionally, quality of your encoded file can be very subjective!

HDV exports have new sound sync problem in Quick Time

I'm on FCP 5.1.4. Prior to a few weeks ago, I've had no issue with exporting HDV files and playing on QuickTime. Now, regardless of the Quicktime Conversion I use, the exported video lags the sound. I went back to old projects and exported. Same thing. All the clips play fine in FCP. QuickTime is 7.5. I've read elsewhere people have had to downgrade to prior versions of QT. Anyone have a similar problem or have an idea what the root cause might be?
Specs of captured footage (pretty normal)
Capture video: 1440x1080
Copressor: HDV108060i
Video Rate: 29.97
Audeo: 48hz
Hope we can get some help here because I know others have the problem--and like me--are dead in the water on projects.

Figured out a solution. For those of you who have equipment/software similar to mine, FCP 5.4.1, IMAC G5 and QT 7.5. My project had multiple layered soundtracks. Sending to QT with any kind of compression didn't work. I wanted to ultimately get to an IPOD format. Here's what I did:
Export project as self-contained movie.
Open QT (don't just click on the file - it'll launch FCP).
Open the reference file you just made.
It'll open, but probably stutter because size of raw file; doesn't matter.
Stop QT from playing.
Choose Export; then any file type you want that's smaller.
I chose IPOD.
Works flawlessly.

*** HDV to SD DVD

I've been following the post below for a while now in order to take HDV footage to a SD DVD more quickly but I'm running into problems. The post basically calls to create a DVCPRO 50 anamorphic sequence, and drop the HDV sequence into it (nest it). Sometimes this works, but sometimes the HDV sequence I'm dropping in doesn't resize itself like it's supposed to. It is really inconsistent. Just exporting from the timeline directly to compressor to make DVDs is quality I'm happing with, but it takes about 60 hours to convert a 1 hour film. Can anyone either explain why this may be happening and/or pass along some links to a better (and faster) workflow for going from HDV to SD DVD?
For FYI, here is the post I am referring to:
My new HDV to SD workflow is as follows:
Capture and edit Native HDV in FCP 5.0.4 or later.
Create a DV50 timeline (DVCPRO 50) 4:3 or 16:9 (Anamorphic)
Set the Field Dominance to Upper (Odd)
Set the Video Processing - Motion Filtering Quality to Fastest (Linear)
Drop the HDV onto the DV50 timeline, it will scale / letterbox correctly, you can alter the scale and pan it to your liking on the DV50 timeline.
Export the DV50 as a quicktime movie.
This will be fairly quick, because there are no filters required for the field dominance upper, as it matches the HDV - we will let compressor switch the fields instead. However, because of this, firewire preview will have the wrong interlacing, and appear jerky on movement. You can DV (DV25) preview DV50 rendered timelines, it seems to convert on the fly.
Drop the exported DV50 movie into compressor.
Don't add any conversion settings yet, click on the DV50 line, and bring up the inspector window, change the Native Field Dominance to be Upper - same as was in the timeline.
Now add some DVD conversions, match 16:9 conversions with DV50 Anamorphic movies, and 4:3 with regular DV50. Use the 2 pass setting. Because we set the Native Field Dominance to Upper, the MPEG-2 videos will have their Field Dominance set to Top First - this is correct.
Submit.
Timings: (1 min 56 sec timeline) on 1.5 GHz G4
Save DV50 from timeline 10 to 11 minutes
Create 2 pass MPEG-2 from DV50 - 30 minutes
Total time, for 1 min 56 sec of HDV to DVD, 40 minutes on 1.5GHz G4
Previous time, going from the timeline via compressor was 68 minutes.
Create DVD's from those assets, they seem to be the best quality possible in the fastest turnaround time, and using DV50 as an intermediate seems to remove the darkening problems of None, has a colour-space that matches the final MPEG - unlike DV (DV25), and does not require too much HD space. It also creates the MPEG quite quickly too, because the DV50 decode is pretty fast.
If this set-up works for you, and improves things over what you are currently doing, let me know. If it does not, let me know why not! If you think there is a better quality method, share it!
Now, over to you guys, I need some feedback and some advice from the pro's:
With the Upper (Odd) / Top First Field Dominance, from FCP through to Compressor, a lot of time is saved when making the DV50 movie, because it does not need a shift fields filter, BUT, will there be problems with a MPEG-2 that has Top First field dominance on certain DVD players ? It seems to work on the players I have tested. It is possible to do the Lower (Even), Shift Fields +1 filter and Bottom First MPEG workflow, but it is quite a bit slower, although it does preview over firewire on DV properly. Any thoughts from someone who knows this stuff better than me - is the end result the same, or am I relying on the DVD player handling the MPEG properly ?

Some other updates:
I had a lower quality export of a HDV sequence, to an HDV quicktime movie. I have tried all evening to track it down, and post, definitively what it was, but I am at a loss. I can't reproduce it. I thought it was to do with conformed vs. un-conformed timelines, but they now seem to produce the same result.
Well, this is interesting anyway, Choosing Sequence -> Render All -> Both (and make sure everything is ticked), you will get a long Conforming HDV Video step. Now Print to Video won't repeat the (first) Conform, and happens quicker, and exporting the movie happens a lot faster too. Make sure you have filled any gaps with slugs, gaps will slow things down, even after the conform.
Timings:
1 min 56 sec timeline, about 14 cuts only HDV edits, just a rough cut.
1.5GHz Powerbook G4.
Save HDV from unconformed timeline: 10 minutes
Conform Timeline: 8 minutes
Save HDV from conformed timeline: 1 minute
Weird, huh ? Why doesn't it just conform, then export ?

Error message when trying to export audio file to DVD

I recorded an interview on a portable voice recorder and transferred the data into Garage Band by connection of a cable connected to the headphone of the device to the speaker input in the Mac. Garage Band took the audio file. It is 1.5 GB. I did some minor editing and wanted to save the file onto a DVD. When I selected "share" to export song to the DVD, an error message came up stating that the file was over 2 GB, which it wasn't. The file was then broken in two and one part was "shared", but the same error message came up. I took the computer to the Apple store for the Genus to help me with, but he had the same problem. The only way that he was able to save the audio file to a DVD was to select the file and place the file on a blank DVD. However, it can only be listened on a computer with Garage Band. I intend to use my voice recorder again to interview people. How can I input the audio file in the Mac and have it saved on a DVD to be played on multiple devices?

What software version are you using?

How to Export Catalog to Multiple DVD

Question.
My main catalog has a shoot of about 1500 photos from a swim meet we covered. I would like to move these photos off the harddrive and onto DVDs and free up some space. I would really like to export these photos as a catalog because we did some edits on them and sorted them into different groups.
My problem is that everytime I try to do this it results in a catalog of over 12-15GB of information and do to its size it will not fit on a single DVD and I do not know how to make the catalog span over multiple DVDs. If anyone has a suggestion please let me know

When you Export a number of images to CD/DVD Lightroom will automatically let you now how many discs are needed.
Your particular case seems to be, how to get the catalog on the discs aswell.
Try this.
Export all files to DVD via the usual export dialog. Now that you have a number of discs create a new catalog.
Catalog the discs and then burn that catlog to cd.
The result is a master cd with catalog and previews (very quick for one to flip through) and a selection of DVDs to which the catalog refers.

How do I export HDV, DV and still images as one HDV sequence?

Hi, my sequence (HDV-PAL) contains mainly HDV footage but also a few DV shots and stills that have a few applied effects. I want to export the whole thing as HDV (because it will be shown on a big screen) and don't mind a bit of lost quality on the DV sections, but would like the best possible outcome. I know it's difficult to mix DV and HDV together, but I've done it, the project is complete, I can't recapture anything (will take too long) and I need to export this thing as beautifully as possible. At the moment any exporting (I've tried lots of different codecs) makes the different fields go crazy, and if I try dump the whole project on a DV50 sequence then all mixed media ratios freak out and become huge. I haven't tried frame blending or blurring yet because I don't know anything about it...
Is there a way to export this project to DVD and also to a DV TAPE without trashing my DV and still images and conserving the high res HDV footage?

To make the MPEG for the DVD and the DV version: Choose file/export/QuickTime Movie... then check ON the "make self contained" option. Open that file in Compressor and choose the lowest time preset you can. Then select another preset to use for that same compression session... from the Advanced Format conversions, choose the DV NTSC preset. The resulting movie will be a DV file you can record to DV tape.
It's pretty likely this will take quite a while to do...

CS4: Trouble exporting file for Corel DVD Moviefactory

I recently completed a project on Adobe Premiere CS4... I had been exporting as Microsoft AVI NTSC Widescreen format (the project is 16:9) and had burned DVDs with Windows DVD maker, which came out good enough, but now I need to create a DVD with set chapter marks (which you can't do with DVD maker). I'd been running into several problems trying to export into Moviefactory...
1) The Microsoft AVI files are not formatting to full widescreen. There are black bars on the sides even though it's a 16:9 file and the project is 16:9. I suspect this is an issue I'd have to go to a Corel forum for but I thought I'd ask here too...
2) If exporting to MPEG-2 DVD format, it formats the video properly, but the file itself contains no audio, no matter which audio setting I export it to... there's no audio on the file itself so the problem is there before I bring it to Corel.
So far MPEG-2 has been the only file can export into Moviefactory that formats the video correctly, but I can't get Premiere to export it with sound... not sure what the issue is.

MPEG-2 DVD is not supposed to have audio, that is in a separate file (I don't know the suffix, but the first part of the name is the same as the video portion)
When you import the MPEG video file, you also need to import the related sound file

FCE4 / HDV / Apple TV / DVD

Hi, bonjour,
I'm new to apple and FCE4. I used to work with Adobe Premiere but since it takes a whole lot of work to get HDV footage in an Apple TV format, I switched to imac/FCE.
Can anyone tell me what the best settings are to put HDV footage to DVD AND to Apple TV using FCE4

Assuming you're using iDVD to make the DVD you use two separate export functions. You export to QuickTime Movie and take that to iDVD. You export to QuickTime Conversion and use the Apple TV preset for the other. You should probably read up on using the application.

1 and 2 are essentially the same assuming Apple ProRes 422 HQ in both instances .. if not then obviously 1 produces a QT mov which is not HQ and 2 produces one that is.
3 avoids ProRes altogether as an intermediate and compresses straight to MPEG2 ... most find that the results are not as good as using an intermediate and that export using compressor ties up both apps, so its a pain.
... personally i don't do the DVD thing and so am just quoting gleaned info in this regard

Best Export Settings for 24PA DVD

Just finished 10 minute production shot with a Canon xl2 in 24p advanced pulldown with 16:9. After exporting with compressor to DVD Studio pro and burning - have some leterboxing and quality is not what I expected. Also - client reports "pause" when playing on new dell. Need the highest quality - but production needs to play on most popular newer model computers. Would appreciate any advice anyone can provide:
1. What is best export setting to use from FCP for DVD production of a 24pa 16:9 project? Should 16:9 be checked under the advanced sequence setting - or does that cause a problem in dvd studio pro?
2. What is best compressor setting? DVDbest quality 90 minute 16:9?
Really need some help on this - we have a fantastic production and wand it to be displayed in the proper format at the highest quality. Thanks so much.

1 - 320Gig Boot for Win7 64bit Pro and ALL program installs (2)
2 - 320Gig data for Win7 paging swap file and video project files
When I create a project on #2 drive, the various work files follow,
so my boot drive is not used for the media cache folders and files
3 - 1Terabyte data for all video files... input & output files (1)
(1) for faster input/output with 4 drives
- use drive 3 for all source files
- use drive 4 for all output files
(2) only 60Gig used, for Win7 & CS5 MC & MS Office & other smaller programs

Exporting DVCPRO HD720p50 to DVD (PAL)

Hi. I'm currently edit on DVCPRO HD720p50, using FCP 6.0.2, Blackmagic HD card.
The video looks fine after upgraded my FCP to 6.0.2. It is extremely impressive in the timeline, but having problem in DVD (PAL) output.
I have tried out several approach, e.g. exporting direct from timeline using Compressor, export uncompressed mov and import to DVD Studio Pro, editing on different timeline and formats, but it ended up with the same problem - flicker visual.It ONLY works fine with DVCPRO HD720p50, editing timebase:50 (not even 25), and only can play back with SDI. Anything other than this setting will be flicker.
Is there any solution for this? Any suggestions to export DVCPRO HD720p50 to DVD in PAL? Help...

Finally, I found the way to do it.
DVCPRO HD 720p50 works absolutely fine when I export as a NTSC DVD, but it flickle when I export as PAL. Anyone know why?
I intended to export a PAL DVD, thus shot in 50p, but Compressor does not work well with PAL.
