Exporting smaller clips

I've just imported a 60 minute DV tape into imovie 09. Now on my old apple mac I used to be able to select smaller segments from the 60 minute clip. I literally just dragged them onto my desktop so as I could put them on an external memory stick. However with imovie 09 it wont let me do this simple task? Am I missing something here? All I want to do is take a minute here and a minute there, put them onto my desktop, then onto my memory stick and take the files to university so as I can use the more sophisticated apple programs on some of the footage there.
Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated
Thanks
Kev

Kev - locate the clips as I described, using Reveal In Finder. With your memory stick plugged in, just drag the clip to the stick's icon on your Desktop. If you wish to trim the clip, it's probably best if you copy the clip then paste it to the Desktop, rather than dragging straight to the memory stick.
Open the clip on the Desktop with your version of QuickTime Player (it's probably version 7). Double-clicking the clip should open it in QT Player, otherwise right-click (or Control-click) on it and select Open With>QuickTime Player. In the Player you will see a playhead under the viewer. Directly under the playhead are 2 L shaped markers. Drag the markers to the start and end points of the section of video you want to use. You can drag the playhead between the markers to check that you've selected the exact frames you need. Now go to the menu item Edit and select Trim to Selection.
To save this edited (trimmed) clip, go to File and select Save As. Give the clip a name different to the source clip and save it to the Desktop. Now you can drag that clip to the memory stick icon.
If you need other sections from the original source clip, go through the same routine using QuickTime Player to Trim to Selection for the piece you want, again saving with a different name. So, even if you have a one hour clip with no breaks sitting on your Desktop, you can continually edit out sections with QT Player and save them independently.
The only caveat here, is that you may need QuickTime Pro to do the trimming, available for purchase from the online Apple Store for about $US20. I'm not sure if QuickTime Player has the trimming feature, as I'm using QuickTime Pro.

  • How do i export small clips from an audio file?

How do I export only a small portion of an audio track to file WITHOUT temporarily deleting any part of the audio file?
I have a big audio file. This audio file is a language lesson with many, many clips of english sentences and their target language translations. I basically want to cut up each little section that I don't already know how to translate, and use these audio clips as audio flash cards. There's 1 problem though, and that's my lack of Garage Band knowledge. I easily do this up to 80 times per audio lesson, so a simplified method would be preferred.... boy, I'm sure missing Logic right about now ;(

To export only a part of a track you have two ways:
The easiest way is the "Cycle Region": set the cycle region to the section of the clip that you want to export. The cycle region will show as a yellow bar at the top of the Timeline. You can drag the ends to adjust it. Silence all other tacks and use "Share > Export song to disk (or share to iTunes)". This will only export that section of he clip.
The other way would be to duplicate the tarck and work on the copy of the original: Either trim the ends of the region by draging or cut out the section you want (⌘T). Silence the original and export the copy.

  • IMovie HD 6.0.3: After making 10 movies where I clipped portions from a larger clip (and exported the smaller clips), suddenly iMovie clips are much shorter after I export them.

    Hi there,
I am using iMovie HD 6.0.3 on an older MacBookPro (OS X, 10.4.11).
I took an AVI video and imported that into iMovie HD.
I then created smaller clips out of that - like editing a 20 minute video into small, 30 second clips.
I made about 10 of these smaller clips, exported them using "expert settings," and burned the results to DVD. These all worked fine.
Suddenly, the final product that I export is much shorter than the clip I created. For example, I'll create a 30 second smaller clip from the original. When I review this 30 second clip, it is what I wanted.
When I export this 30 second clip, it makes a QuickTime movie that is only 23 seconds. (The first 10 I made did not do this).
I tried extending my clip by 7 seconds, hoping to end up with a 30 second clip after exporting. The result was even shorter - like 15 seconds.
I have checked disk space - it has at least 500 GB free space. I have tried exporting the clip to both my laptop and to an external hard drive. The results are the same.
I just tried using the "crop" feature to see if my end product was better - but it was the same.
Does anyone know what is going on? Why did this start after making 10 successful exports? What can I do to get it working right again, as I have 3 more clips to make and am running up against a deadline.
    Thanks so much!
    Heidi

Since I can't edit this post... (Why?) I'd add: fast forwarding and fast reverse (shift key and arrow left or right) the HA files is also not smooth. They play alright. I'm surprised iMovie can't handle them either. I didn't have a problem with the earlier camcorder's HA files... (All were converted MTS files using Movie Converter.)

  • In making a "highlights" movie, using clips from different imported iMovie events, can I delete the larger iMovie event file from the Events browser and still work w the smaller clips in the Projects browser w/o having the larger files still loaded?

I have sucessfully imported 150 Sony digital 8mm movies (each one hour in length) into iMovie as 150 iMovie events. I have since successfully converted them from their original 13 Gb (.dv) file to an exported smaller 1.3 Gb (.4mv "large file") movie that I am happy with, using the iMovie projects browser. So now I have 150 " .4mv" movies on my internal HD as well as about half of my original raw data " .dv " movies on my internal hard drive.
Due to their large size (over 2 Tb), I do not have all the larger raw data (.dv) files on my 2Tb internal drive, just about half of them. What I want to do now is to create a new project in the Projects browser for each of my kids, and reload, starting with Tape #1, each of these larger files and do a highlights movie for each of my kids, wherein I pick out smaller clips from each 1 hour .dv iMovie event and paste them into the appropriate kid's Highlights project in the Projects browser.
Here's my question: If I load the first 5 large files back onto my internal HD, and paste in various shorter clips into each of my kids' Highlights project, and then if I delete those first 5 large files (they are backed up on 2 other 3Tb external HDs), can I keep doing this (reloading the next 5 large .dv files to work with), and ultimately take each of my kid's Highlights project and export as a .4mv movie EVEN THOUGH the earlier large .dv files are no longer on my internal HD, OR does my iMac need to have all these larger files loaded on my internal HD for me to eventually export each of my kid's Highlights project to a .4mv movie?
I have a 2011 era 27" iMac desktop w 2Tb HD internal and 250 Gb flash drive, and Lion OSX and iMovie 11.

Thanks. I tested it out and you were correct. I loaded 2 .dv movies from my external HD back onto my internal HD, and got them re-imported into iMovie, took a few short clips from each of the 2 iMovie events and pasted them into a new project in the Project Browser. Then I deleted these 2  "source clips" from my internal HD, closed iMovie and then re-opened it and found that iMovie would NOT export the smaller clips for a "highlights" .4mv movie without the "source clips" being available.
I read your link on Quicktime. It talks about mostly trimming, which is what I did with each iMovie event before I took each one as a project to export as a smaller .4mv file. But if I use Quicktime (do I need QT Pro or basic), what advantage is it to me to use QT over iMovie (I must admit I am a novice at iMovie and have never used QT or QT Pro as a tool)? Will it then convert any edits I make to a .m4v movie or do I need iMovie to do that?
Does QT allow trimming multiple segments out of a movie during one edit session, or can you only do 1 at a time? By that I mean that, for example, when I use Sonys Picture Motion Browser for my .mts movies, you can only set one Start and one End point for each edit/trim you do: it does not allow you to set multiple Start Stop points like iMovie allows in its Event or Project browser. You can only do one "trim" at a time, save it and then reopen to do another trim. not very useful.

  • Should I Export Multiple Clips or Make One Giant One?

I have just started to use FCE 4, and love it.
However, I am running into the same problem as many other people, but can't seem to find the answer to MY question...
I am editing a HD movie imported via FCE from my Canon HG10. I use the Magic Bullet Looks video filter on my video.
    My question is...
Since it seems that every time I do some small change to the project (text edit, transitions, etc.) it has to re-render the video effects with it (taking about 4 hours each pop).
Is it better if I edit each video clip with the filters in a seperate project, export those clips, then add them back to the entire project? Or am I missing a key step in making this all work in one large project, efficiently?
Thank you for all your help.

Where are you storing your source media?
My source media is being stored on a Firewire 800 external drive. I realize that will cause some slowdown, but it shouldn't be that much, should it?
Are you using SafeRT or UnlimitedRT?
I don't know what those are, sorry.
Having to render constantly leads to a couple of different possibilities:
    1. Your source codec doesn't match your sequence settings
    How do I check that?
    or
    2. Your real-time playback capabilities are limited by your system setup.
I know for a fact that applying a Looks filter to any clip will require rendering. The time it takes for a render depends on your system and where your source media is located.
But it keeps rendering the same video, even if I make a change to another video track (like a text track).

  • Exporting separate clips?

hi, i just read every discussion on exporting and can't understand how to export the whole movie in separate clips like it was captured, instead of one large file.
is it really impossible? i don't have a camera and i need to send the footage to a windows based editor via an ipod, what can i do? manually exporting each clip is not an option, because there are 80+ of them.
    thanks

thank you, Karl. i really wish apple would add such
an option. splitting from a large file would lose the
individual scenes, which all have different length.
    fat32 compatibility is another woe...
If I wasn't clear, my suggestion was to split the long video into scenes on the PC. Not great fun, but probably easier than any other method.
If you keep the (chunks of exported) video smaller than 2GB, my guess is compatibility shouldn't be a problem. No experience, though. Keep each export shorter than 19 minutes to avoid the Fat32 limit. (Use the "Share selected clips" checkbox to break the export into smaller chunks.)

  • Saving Small Clips & Memory

Great place for help...here goes again!
I am going through 15 years of tapes and making a backup DVD of each one for archive. Fine and dandy...and quite fun.
I am trying to save various 1-10 minute clips from these 50 tapes (now in iMovie ) to pull together something for grandmas.
So, when I save a 1 min clip (and sending to a new project that I'm building up), I guess the computer (in the new project) is saving the entire clip/segment it came from--not just the 1-2 minutes I had edited. In some cases, this is 1 hour (PS: When I import tape from older analog 8mm format it does not make automatic chapters....I could import 60 minutes with some 20 scenes, it adds it to iMovie as one 60 min clip...I have to then cut and splice and add chaptesr later).
So.....if I have a one hour iMovie, and wish to export one 2 min clip to another project, and takes a ton of memory, and my new proj. is approaching 60 GIG.
I REALIZE I could save the new clips in quick time. But is there a way to save these smaller clips in the highest of quality and export them to the newer project I am building up?

Select the clip in iMovie and Share it to a Full Quality movie. In the Share dialog, turn on the checkbox "Export selected clips only". That exports only the clip, not its entire source file.
Later, import that movie to your grandmas project.
Theoretically, you can export a single clip to tape that way too. Sometimes the export fails to stop at the selected clip, so you have to stop it manually.
That's a good way to use the method Bengt suggested which may be easiest, and it saves disk space. Start a new grandmas tape, and export all the grandmas clips to that tape as you encounter them. Later, import the grandmas tape to a new grandmas project.

  • Debate on effect of single large clip vs smaller clips

Here's the situation: I shot a competition in 1 take per tape, no breaks, in HD. I have an external drive with plenty of room. I'd love to just feed these tapes to the monster and walk away to do something else. However, a friend of mine says that will slow everything down during editing and that I need to digitize individual performances as smaller clips. On the other hand, someone else told me the size of the source file doesn't matter.
Since I never stopped the camera, there are no time code breaks to automatically separate the files. My plan was to feed them in, then quickly go through and make subclips. I would edit based on the subclips.
Has anyone tried both techniques and found any difference in rendering or exporting time? Thanks.

FCE is a non-destructive editor. Whether you have a bunch of small imported clips or one big chunk will not make any difference to the performance.
You could save some drive space by capturing judiciously. Your call on that.
There's no need to make sub-clips unless there is a special need.
Open one big clip in the Viewer from the Browser, set an In/Out point and edit that to the Timeline.
Repeat the same procedure using different In/Out points from the same big clip and so on.
Non-destructive means you call up the media stored on the Scratch Disc. No media is duplicated in the Browser, Viewer or Timeline. All things here are file-paths to the actual media on the Scratch Disc.

    How are you exporting?

  • Export a clip in exactly the same quality as the original

I have just tried importing a DSLR H264 file in premiere and export it back
    1. At the question if i would like to create the new sequence i choose using the clip's settings
This generated a correct sequence (regarding the frame size the pixel aspect ratio and the field order) but it set the preview settings in i mpeg / 50% quality, while the clip uses the quicktime H264 codec (let us say that this will be used in the editing procedure and can be altered at the export)
    2. I immediately exported the clip from the sequence using the match sequence setting option (which uses the I mpeg codec)
    3. I Linked then to AMA in the Avid facility we have, (both the original and the -so called same as sequence = same as clip export - (I used link to AMA so that i could prevent Avid from trnascoding any of the clips.
    4. the results (using Avid's Color Scopes) are that there is a colour shift to the exported video from Premiere vs the original.
    5. I retried using H264 as the export codec and disabling the Limit data rate and enabling any time cost setting
    6. I tried many other possible solutions regarding the export codecs or the sequence settings and still having a different kind of shifting all the time
What is the official Adobe solution to import and export in a lossless way any material, or importing something in Premiere means you start shifting from original?

First of all thanks for the reply. Both codecs you mention are pc only codecs and i am working on a mac
I am working on an avid environment, having proposed the install of 3 premiere suites
My point is that i want to edit no matter the codec (impeg or whatever) but be able to export the edit using the native video codec and at the native quality like avid's AMA link way
So when i use H264 i want to export H264
Nevertheless i have done some experiments here and came at the following conclusions
    1) exporting using animation codec gives back 100% quality in the best speed
while this is back imported to Premiere and matched down with the original using Premiere scopes and the sequence's preview files being set to H264 gives back 100% the original, when i match it on avid (1 track the original AMA linked 2nd track the exported from Premiere (also AMA linked) ) the Avid's scopes are showing a minor shift in chroma and luma (which visually is non identified)
My question though is more generic and has to do with the whole philosophy of Premiere's materials handling.
I import a video - it is by default using the 50% quality impel in order to edit quickly and when it comes to export what do i do?
I use a different export codec than the one i used to edit?
What about the effects rendered on the timeline (having used the imeg codec)?
I try to switch the sequence's settings to a quicktime animation codec when i finish an edit (it losses the preview files generated by the impel codec) and then export using again the animation codec, but that;s me
I try to find if there is an official  Adobe Lossless method of doing this...

  • Exporting multiple clips at one time

Hi, My school has asked me to convert old videos onto DVD media for archiving and for distribution amongst all teachers in my department. Yes I am sure some will mention legal stuff here but the videos are no long made and what we have is being held together with cellophane tape or cracking laserdisc videos (remember those?).
So far I have been able to import all the videos into iMovie. Each clip is about 1 minute or less in duration. I am now exporting one clip at a time into the requested WMV format but I can only export 1 clip at a time and I have several hundred to to. Is there a way to select multiple clips and export them one at a time without me having to select and export on clip at a time?
thanks in advance now back to exporting....

Never mind I am doing it one clip at a time. The school seems really happy about this since these video discs are no longer available for repurchase. Thanks.
