Exporting Timeline from Speedgrade

I am working with Premiere Pro and Speedgrade CC. I find using the direct-link is fine but a bit limiting in terms of the full potential of Speedgrade. The direct-link from Premiere Pro also seems to slow up my system and grading becomes very clunky despite my 3.5Ghz i7, 3Tb fusion drive, 4gb graphics card, 32gb ram brand new iMac27 !
So I have exported my timeline from Premiere pro as an EDL and imported the clips natively into Speedgrade. I can now add grading layers etc and the processor seems to deal with this much better. Grading is fast and efficient working with the clips this way. The problem i have now is exporting from Speedgrade and getting my timeline back into Premiere Pro for finishing , titling etc and final export.
I have managed by default i think to export my timeline as individual clips using the PathElement-0 option from the Render panel ( i found this on a tutorial ) and the clips are saved in a folder as .mov files. When I import these back into Premiere Pro they are in a random order and not in sequence.
How can i now re-form my timeline from these clips in Premiere ?
I have tried saving an EDL from the Timeline tab in Speedgrade but this just refers back to the imported non-graded clips NOT the new graded clips in my Speedgrade timeline ?
Does anyone have a good Premiere Pro / Speedgrade roundtrip that excludes the Direct-Link to Speedgrade ???
Thanks
Best
Mark

Sorry to be so long in replying ... but here's my bit. Adobe's staffers have indicated they are moving from the "old" EDL process to the direct-link, and so ... it's not a heavily supported nor even considered part of the internal thinking process ... I think that's fair to say. Still available but not emphasized? I've noted the staffers don't tend to work here so much with internal-Adobe EDL questions, mostly for those who are clearly working with timelines from other sources and therefore MUST use EDL & XML importing.
I'm wondering if part of your slow-down issues are waiting until your editing is finished to edit-lock & THEN only taking a "final" timeline into Sg? Prior to the CC-model with the Direct Link so heavily incorporated, that was the ONLY thing that made sense. Now, it's so fast to buzz forth & back that working sub-sequences is becoming common and "standard" ... if for no other reason than Sg is faster in d-l mode with shorter sequences, rather than say working a single 87 minute sequence. My personal model is to take sequences over for basic correction early on, pretty much as soon as I've got them mostly sorted. Especially if I've got b-roll the quality or "feel" of which I'm not sure. (Some of my b-roll is provided by others ...) After seeing the way the look can be worked with each, I may even change some of my sequence editing choices. And playing back the full Master sequence in the Program Monitor I can see if I need to adjust any sub-sequences to better match.
As to using the old way ... I think using proxies might work better, but I don't have much experience with that. I know that was standard and most colorists knew how to do that sleeping. I did it a few times, and once or twice even got it right first off without futzing. Other times I was on here for questions, which got some raised eye-brow comments back & forth between the Experienced Masters ... "geez, dumb noob's anywayz ... "
SpeedGrade can do this, the controls are still there and pretty much unchanged if I never learned to decipher the Gobbledeegook Speak. Check out some of the tutorials for CS6 days, as that was still heavily used at that time.

  • Exports differing from timeline/weird stuff

    Hi everyone.
A couple of weird little problems going on here that I thought you may have bumped into. We're running FCP 7, AJA Kona LHi cards for I/O, snow leopard.
It is an education institution technically so the machines do get a fair bit of use, but I've checked all usual sequence settings, trash prefs etc..
We're running into multiple problems: clips suddenly having time-code generator filters applied to them out of nowhere (not all clips in timeline), crossfades applied to almost all clips on the timeline (this couldn't be a user error selecting all and hitting command + T since some don't have fades even though there are handles) and most annoyingly, exports differing from the timeline. For instance, I applied a blur to a duplicate of a clip, matted it out to only affect a certain area of the clip. On export, there is a quick grey flash and then the brightness of the whole image drops for one frame. Doesn't do it in the timeline.
We're also experiencing tiny little zooms at the beginning and end of frames on some exports. We think we might have this one solved as it's only happening on footage shot on the Panasonic AG-AF101 which was transferred straight into ProRes without going natively to AVC first, which has resulted in some strange interlacing problems compared with 5D footage in the same timeline, also transcoded to the same ProRes settings. We rendered everything to ProRes LT then exported and this seems to have got rid of it.
ANYWAY, sorry for such a long post but I just wondered if anyone has seen stuff like this, bearing in mind that we're always working with the correct sequence settings with decent editing codecs (usuallly prores), and if anyone has any tips..
    Cheers!
    Kit

This is months later, I know, but I'm wondering if people are still having problems with this.
I'm shooting on the ag af-101 and transfering the folder in it's entirety to a hard drive, then logging and transfering into final cut 7. Pro res 422.
What I'm getting is, I think, what a previous contributor mentioned - a strange strobing or what I would call a juddering on some footage.
It seems to be on pans and reveals but also on movement of characters within a motionless frame.
It's possible it has something to do with the camera but it seems more likely to be a final cut issue.
    Any thoughts?

  • What is the best compressor setting to use ... when exporting a 720p timeline from FCP for a project that will only be played back in a standard def monitor?

What is the best compressor setting to use for DVD StudioPro ... when exporting a 720p 30 timeline from FCP for a project that will only be viewed in a standard def monitor?

Update: The iBook can play any 480p video and higher if I encode them with DivX and in AVI format. But of course this is not compatible with my iPhone 4. At least I can shrink my library now and get away from the full MPEG-2s. I don't get why I can't use Apple's h264 though. There has to be a setting I am missing. The sample Apple h264 videos from the days of Tiger worked flawlessly on my iBook when it was new so the CPU must be capable of decoding it. I really can't understand this.
Also, since I made my videos in English for my family, I had to create soft subtitles for my wife's Chinese family, and I can't get players like QT with perian or MPlayerX to sync them properly to an AVI encoded with DivX, they only sync well with the iPhone 4 m4v/mp4 formatted files I made. This is a real pickle.
So now I may need three or four copies of each video, LOL. I need to hardcode the subtitles if I want to use AVI to playback on older machines, and keep the mp4 file for the iDevices too, while keeping higher quality h264 videos for my American relatives...
If h264 is compatible with my iBook, what is the proper encoding settings? Must I dramatically lower the settings or frame rate? I can settle on 2 copies of each video that way. One iBook/G4/eMac compatible video that syncs correctly with my srt soft subs, and another version that works well with my iPhone 4 and iPad.
All in all, I will end up with more than 3 or 4 version of each video. On my late G5 dual core I have the full 720-1080p uncompressed master files. On my i5 iMac I have the h264 compressed versions for distribution, and lower versions for my iDevices. Now I need to keep either full MPEG-2 files for the iBook to play, or convert to older formats like DivX AVI for our family's legacy machines. I am running out of hard disk space quick now, LOL.
    Is there an easier way?

  • Batch Exporting Clips from timeline in Final Cut Pro X

So ive looked at many forums and many sources and I know this isn't the first time this question has been asked.....but I was
wondering how I would be able to batch export clips from the timeline (about 100 or so) to use as Content for VJing (live media manipulation). Is there a simple way to acomplish this in Final Cut Pro X... I have heard remours that you can cut multiple clips in Quicktime Pro 7 but im not sure how eficiant this is, I also have heard that this is allot easier to acomplish in Final Cut Pro 7. If anybody knows a simple (and quick way) to acomplish this Im all ears!

If you want to batch export parts of your project, I believe that you'd better served by an external utility, like QTCoffee. Export your movie to Quicktime, and then use QTCoffee to create the various bits in one, er... batch.

  • How do I update an CS3 ENCORE timeline from CS3 PP

I have completed CS3 ENCORE project with menues and links and generate a test DVD.  Test DVD shows CS3 PPro edits are required.    2008 thread on same subject said to select ASSET 1 (timeline) from ENCORE Project panel, select file and REPLACE ASSET.  REPLACE ASSET is grayed out for me.   I imported the original video asset directly from PPro into ENCORE to start the ENCORE project.   ADOBE Dynamic Linking has AFTER-EFFECT (grayed out) as the only possible selections so I don't know if Dynamic Linking is effective or working.
Goal is to update the video asset in PPro which is a ENCORE timeline without loosing the ENCORE markers from PPro.
How should I output an updated sequence from CS3 PPRO and How should I REPLACE or pick up the updated asset in ENCORE?  How do I replace the ENCORE timeline with the new asset once I get it into ENCORE?
Sorry that this is a repeat of a discussion 2 weeks ago.   I thought I could get away without PPro edit for a new DVD.  I was wrong.
In ENCORE the video file is a .M2V MPEG and the separate audio file is WAVE  I have REPLACE ASSET capability on the MPEG file but what about the WAVE file.  Should both files be exported from PPro?   Do both files require REPLACE ASSET?

You may be correct.  The BUILD DVD failed during write due to invalid mpeg file.   I thought by renaming SUMMERTIME2.m2v to SUMMERTIME.m2v I could fool .xmp file about that link.  There may be some time stamp or data size info in .xmp.  I really don't know what .xmp file contains or what it does.
I don't know what .xmpses file does.
Anyone know the prupose or function of .xmp and /xmpses files?
    Now I have two options.
    1. COPY/RENAME SUMMERTIME2.xmp to SUMMERTIME.xmp along with rename SUMMERTIME2.m2v and try to fool ENCORE again.  At this point I would have to remane the SUMMERTIME2.wave to SUMMERTIME.wave also as there must be the same problem with wave and m2v.  There is a 3rd ENCORE project asset call SUMMERTIME type=timeline which I don't know it's function or links,
    or
    2. Load SUMMERTIME2 m2v and wave as an assest to ENCORE and replace timeline for SUMMERTIME with SUMMERTIME2.  I would then HOPE the markers/links are not lost as the markers are the same between the 2 m2v files.
Does anyone have CS3 ENCORE experience replacing timeline m2v assets with marks?
Anyone have comment on my 2 approaches and the success of either?
    UPDATE:
Well I answered my own question.  OPTION1 does not work.   BUILD DVD transcodes audio and began building dvd files, then declares "File not valid mpeg".
This makes me think my output from PPro is not a valid MPEG file.  The m2v data size is very close to original m2v and audio file size is identical to original.  I am really stuck now.
OPTION 2 may not be any better if mpeg is not valid.   How do I validate or prove an m2v file is good for ENCORE outside of ENCORE?

  • Problem sending timeline from Final Cut to a Soundtrack Pro Multitrack Project

    Hello,
Thank you in advance for reading.  I am having trouble sending a timeline from Final Cut to a Soundtrack Pro Multitrack Project.  Final Cut makes a new Soundtrack Pro project file just fine and opens Soundtrack Pro as it's supposed to, but the project in Soundtrack Pro only has a portion of my audio tracks.  I've tried sending by control clicking the sequence in the browser and selecting 'Send to Soundtrack Pro Multitrack Project' as well as highlighting my entire timeline and doing the same.  Both result in the same Soundtrack Pro proejct with about 1/3 of my total 48 audio tracks (lots of sound FX).
I'm using Final Cut 7.0.2 and Soundtrack Pro 3.0.1  My computer is a Macbook Pro running OS 10.6.8, 2.26 ghz intel core 2 duo, 4 gb ram.
Any suggestions (or workarounds, if it comes to that) anyone has will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks again, Gabe

Try building the project to your desktop and then open the Video_TS in the Mac DVD player application.
How does it play/sound?  This application is the best way to see and hear how your burned DVD should play vs. just using simulator and burning.
Just to clarify- are you taking your FC QT file into Compressor and creating a MPG-2 and AC3 file or are you bringing your FC QT directly into DSP?
What codec are you exporting from FC? ProRes422, DV, H264?
Open the FC QT in QT and apple+I to see this.
What does it say for audio?

  • How I can export files from CS5.5 to send for further editing in CS6 and no lose quality?

how I can export files from CS5.5 to send for further editing in CS6 and no lose quality?

If all you need for further editing is the contents of your Timeline,
then you should follow Harm's sage advice.
    Lagarith Lossless Video Codec
    http://lags.leetcode.net/codec.html
    Ut Video Codec Suite
    http://www.videohelp.com/tools/Ut-Video-Codec-Suite
But, if you will need all of your source media files to continue the edit,
you should consider using the Project Manager.
    Trim or copy your project
By using the Project Manager, you will be continuing the edit
with the original media files and there will be no quality loss.
Be aware that once you have edited the project in CS6,
it will be problematic (but not impossible) to return to edit in CS5.5.

  • Cannot Render from SpeedGrade CS6

So, I'm doing some testing to see if SpeedGrade CS6 is for me or not, and honestly…I love what I've seen so far. But, I'm having an issue that's probably easy to resolve (no pun intended), but for the life of me I can't figure out why.
I put a quick sequence of 4K R3D files together in Premiere CS6, exported an EDL, opened the EDL in SpeedGrade and linked back to the footage. Everything seems to work fine. I've graded my clips, added a vignette, and now I'm trying to render/export. But the "Render" button seems permanently greyed out. No matter what combination of output options I choose, it just won't let me start a render session. I'm running the latest CS6, updated via the Adobe Updater. I'm working on a 15" MacBook Pro with Core i7 processor and plenty of RAM. The only connected peripheral is a Thunderbolt RAID setup.
Any ideas why I can't render?
    Thanks!

    Hello Stephen,
    simple things first...
Did you set an output name?
If not, the render button will be grayed out.
    Cheers

  • Export Comp from AEFX to Premiere - display problem

1.I have Exported a Comp from AEFX to Premiere
    2. I open the Comp as a Timeline (Sequence) in Premiere.
    Fine so far.
    3. Scrolling the Timeline - also fine.
    4. As soon as I render it . The Program Monitor displays it "reduced" in Fit Mode and correctly in 100% Mode
    5. Using Tilde Key function the Display is incorrect (reduced) in either fit or 100% mode.
Deleting the Render Files takes me back to step 3.
I can not fathom this at all ( a bug maybe?)

I need to check this out further by some Export Tests from Premiere but meantime I have to change the workflow for this project to something that works without doubt.
Anyone able to do a little test for me with a simple 720p AEFX Project > Export to Premiere ?
Another issue with export from AEFX to Premiere is that the Text Layers do not export.(or import - whichever way you want to look at it)

  • Problems with masks after sending sequence back from SpeedGrade to Premiere (CC)

    Hello,
I'm colour grading a clip in SpeedGrade  CC using the new direct link function. For the colour grading I used  different layers and also masks. Once I'm done I sent my sequence back  to Premiere Pro CC.
I see, Premiere shows me exactly the colour correction I did in SpeedGrade except of one thing:
The places where I used masks in SpeedGrade to light them for instance a bit up are now full of pixeled lines...
I thought it's just a problem with the Preview, so I exported it. The pixeled lines stayed.
Again: In SpeedGrade is everything fine, but when I'm sending the sequence back to Premiere there are these pixels.
It's  really irritating because one day before it worked very good without  any problems and I was practically doing the same as now.
Please help me, if you can! Thank You!

Thank you but my masks are not animated. Premiere just can't reflect the colour correction I did for these masks. Here's an example...on the right edge I created a mask in SpeedGrade. And that's what Premiere is showing me when I send the sequence back from SpeedGrade to it:
    Does anybody know the solution?

  • Extracting portions of the timeline from iMovie to create a 'Sound File'

    Hello
I recently used my Cannon GL2 as a field recorder to record 16 bit audio sound effects.
I'd like to extract certain portions of the timeline to create various 'Sound Files' which will be used later (as sound effects), in either iMovie, or FCE HD.
In iMovie HD, the only method I'm familiar with to extract a portion of the timeline to a 'Sound File', is to FIRST export that portion to a Quicktime File. Then I use 'Sound Studio 2.2.4' to import the Quicktime File. In Sound Studio, I can then create either an AIFF File, or Wav File.
From there, I open iTunes, and import the Wav File. Now I convert that Wav File to an MP3 (if I need to compress the size of the file).
I know I can import Raw DV Video Files (Captures), into Garage Band, but then I can't export that edited project into a Sound File.
But I do know I can use Garage Band to edit (EQ), a portion of the timeline, then Export that portion (as I explained above). But I'm still going through some extra steps .....
With all I'm mentioned, perhaps I need to get another software program in order to eliminate a step on my way to exporting a portion of a Video timeline from either iMovie, or FCE, and get straight to creating a sound file suitable for later import back into FCE, or iMovie?
    Thanx for your comments
    Mike

    Hey Piero
    Comestah?
I'm an Italiano too My Granparents are from Bari
Well yes thank you - that certainly answered part of my question
Now I wonder if I can extract just a 'PORTION' of the timeline? I tried to insert division points without actually cutting out all the unwanted stuff, and highlighted just that portion, but the Audio Extract process reverts back to extracting the ENITIRE timeline. So I guess I'd have to actually cut and delete all the unwanted parts, then 'save as' to that NEW iMovie project reflecting just that edit in order to extract JUST that audio piece?
I wonder if the process is more precise in FCE?
    Gracias

  • Send to encore... multiple timelines from PPro CS4

    Hi
Firstly, apologies if I've missed an answer to this somewhere else. Here's my problem...
I have a HDV 50i PAL project that I want to burn to blu-ray. The project is currently split into three separate timelines in Premiere. At the moment, I'm selecting a timeline and sending it to Encore. I'll then try and send the second timeline to Encore, but it always wants to open a new Encore project.
So my question is, is there a way of making Encore add the second timeline to the same project as the first timeline?
I prefer sending to Encore rather than using the AME as Encore's automatic settings always seem to be better than those from the AME. For example, if I export using AME and HQ presets, one timeline is coming out as 13gig, whereas the same timeline automatically encoded in Encore is coming out at 19gig (maximum render quality used both times) - Quite a difference.
    Hope that makes sense
Any help would be very welcome
    David

    Hey Stan,
looks like you have been where I'm trying to go.  I have some similar questions from CS5.5.
-I have several timelines in PP that I want to dynamically link into Encore.
-When I use dynamic link I only get one of the timelines from PP dynamically linked to the Encore job, and the others don't come through?
-I've tried to select all time lines in PP, but it does not allow this.
-1st question:  How do I get all my PP timelines to come into Encore via dynamic link?
-I've searched around for this and everything I encounter is one PP timeline, with imported other assets.  I don't want to do it that way, as I need the features
of dynamic link to edit PP timelines and have them updated in Encore, etc.  I like that flexibility.
-2nd question: Once you have dynamically linked multiple PP timelines to Encore, how do you add yet another dynamic link from the same job in PP?  For example; lets say I have 3 timelines that were originally linked into Encore, but at some point I needed to drop another timeline to that same  PP job, and then link that to the same job in Encore.  Is it possible to dynamically link a later added PP timeline into the same Encore job?
    Thank you
    Derek...
