Exporting to .doc- "why so hard"?

I realize Apple wants to do everything not to encourage the use of the .doc format- but this is somewhat unrealistic.
I love Pages, but I still have to share 50% of what I create/revise to others who live in the MS-Word world.
So I cannot understand why it takes so many steps to export a pages document to .doc.
You do not have the option of adding an Export button to the toolbar, there is no short cut key to export, no script (that I found). It all has to be done with multiple mouse clicks and pull down menus.
Is anyone aware of a script that can easily convert a pages document to a .doc- without having to go though so many mouse clicks and pull downs?
Unlike other WP which can directly save documents as a .doc- Pages makes it really difficult to share with my PC collegues. (Keynote has the same problem- but I do not have to share as many presentations with collegues, but I am sure others have this issue).
(this was part rant and part question-thanks)
Powerbook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.5)

You do not have the option of adding an Export button
to the toolbar, there is no short cut key to export,
no script (that I found). It all has to be done with
multiple mouse clicks and pull down menus.
You're using Mac OS X 10.4, so you can easily add a shortcut key for the File > Export menu item:
* Start System Preferences,
* choose the Keyboard pane,
* select the Keyboard Shortcuts tab,
* click the + button,
* choose the application Pages,
* enter a menu title of Export… (the ellipsis is typed by pressing Option+;),
* enter a Keyboard Shortcut (eg Cmd+E), and
* restart Pages
Now choosing Cmd+E displays the Export box and it's just a matter of selecting Next and naming the file.
Is anyone aware of a script that can easily convert a
pages document to a .doc- without having to go though
so many mouse clicks and pull downs?
There's a Pages add-on at the iWork Community web site which converts a document to a Word document and prepares an email for sending it to someone:
<http://www.iworkcommunity.com/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid= 11>
As well, this simple script demonstrates how to save a file as a Word document to your Desktop:
<pre>
tell application "Pages"
-- Get front document's name.
set docName to name of front document
-- Remove .pages extension.
set prevTIDs to AppleScript's text item delimiters
set AppleScript's text item delimiters to ".pages"
-- Add .doc extension.
set docName to first text item of docName & ".doc"
set AppleScript's text item delimiters to prevTIDs
-- Save file to Desktop.
set docPathAndName to (path to desktop as string) & docName
save front document as ".doc" in docPathAndName
end tell
</pre>
You could also automate the process by using GUI AppleScript to script clicking all of the menus, buttons, etc and prompting for a file name. PreFab's UI Browser helps to do this:
<http://www.prefab.com/uibrowser/screenshots.html>
Unlike other WP which can directly save documents as
a .doc.
Well that's not correct.
For example, in both Lotus Word Pro and NeoOffice you can't just select File > Save to automatically save into a Word format. Instead, you have to choose File > Save As > File type: Microsoft Word > Filename: whatever.doc > click Save button.
This is the same as Pages' procedure of selecting File > Export > click Word > Filename: whatever.doc > click Save button.
I think you meant to complain about Pages' (and AppleWorks') feature of opening Word documents as an Untitled document, forcing you to save them into a specific format. Apple has a reason for doing things this way which I won't waste time explaining (this is a long message already).
If you're going to complain to Apple about this issue you first need to be able to explain it correctly to them, and then explain a better way of doing it for both new and experienced users. If you don't, you'll miss out on the opportunity to influence Apple and Pages' development.

    Yes.
    And will it restore if the hd isn't even there? Like what if it got stolen or destroyed.
    Also yes.
    Directly-connected external drives (ie, USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt) are not backed-up by default.  You must remove them from the exclusion list in Time Machine Preferences > Options to get them backed-up.  (Network drives cannot be backed-up.)
    And they must be formatted for a Mac -- any variation of Mac OS Extended.
    If the drive is connected, you can browse or restore normally -- just go to the folder or document in question and Enter Time Machine.
    If the drive is not connected, it's a bit different.  See #E3 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • My iTunes library has too much on it.  is there a way to export it to an external hard drive and play movies from there?

    I have nearly filled up my hard drive with movies on itunes.  i know i can export everything to an external hard drive, but is there a way to export only the movies, delete those from my hard drive, and then play the movies with the external hard drive connected?

    If they don't contain DRM, use a program such as Switch. If they do, you can't.

    You need to explain
    The technically correct answer to your statement (there is no actual question) is to select the photos in iPhoto  you want to export and export (file menu ==> export) selecting the EHD as the destination
    My guess is that you may want something different. But since I can not read your mind that is it without more information

  • Exporting to Facebook - why can't I use the old plug-in?

    It's nice that iPhoto '09 tried to help us with the Facebook exporter built-in. But why couldn't they make it useful? Why can't I tag people before I upload them? Why can't I upload photos to an existing album? I wouldn't mind so much, but they seemed to have disabled the existing (working) plug-in that was available. So now I have to export the pictures to my desktop and upload them through Facebook. Hmm...doesn't seem too user-friendly.

    Exporting to Facebook - why can't I use the old plug-in?
    Have you considered asking the author of the plug-in?
    It's nice that iPhoto '09 tried to help us with the Facebook exporter built-in. But why couldn't they make it useful?
    Millions upon millions of people do find it very useful
    Why can't I tag people before I upload them?
    You can - have you watched the iPhoto tutorials?
    Why can't I upload photos to an existing album?
    You can IF the album was created by iPhoto
    Do you have an iPhoto question that one of the iPhoto users who volunteer here might be able to help with?

    How do I export a .doc file to my online adobe account into a .pdf file?

    Hi tennisknight,
    The online Adobe account you are referring to, is it Acrobat.com cloud?
    You need to purchase a subscription for PDF Pack and then sign in to : https://cloud.acrobat.com/
    Select the files saved in 'Acrobat.com' and then click on the 'Create pdf' tab to convert the selected doc files to pdf.
    Alternatively you can download the .doc file from the online account and use Adobe Acrobat to convert it to pdf.

  • Maintaining manual page breaks when exporting to .doc OR .rtf

    Hi, all.
    I've tried to find solutions to this on this board, but am coming up short. Please help!
    I have inserted page breaks into my pages document. When I export to .doc or .rtf, the page breaks are gone (the separate pages now just run into each other). Any ideas?

    MVes,
    I tried to duplicate your reported behavior.
    I found that a Pages file with Page Breaks _exported to .rtf_ opens in TextEdit with NO breaks, opens in Pages with NO page breaks and opens in Word with page breaks as designed.
    I found that a Pages file with Page Breaks _exported to Word_ opens in Pages with Page Breaks as designed, opens in TextEdit with page breaks as designed and in Word with page breaks as designed.
    So it appears that the only problem is with opening an RTF doc in Pages or TextEdit. There have been other reports here that indicate that Pages support of RTF is weak on import.

    What I read in the PDF version of the manual (while I was waiting for my plane this afternoon), it seems pretty comprehensive. I was particularly interested in what it had to say about creating your own templates.
    Supposedly, it will remember if I left invisibles showing in templates (one of my big complaints with Pages 1). I'll find out soon enough. I must say that opening my two documents I use for answering posts here in discussions sure did open faster & navigating an 11-page table was much faster.
    Another good thing I noticed, the font used for the serial number is much clearer & there were no confusing characters - O/0, S/5, etc.

  • I'm trying to make a timelapse with 900 pictures converted into 30 fps to get a 30 seconds video but after exporting my movie why is my video length 15 minutes?

    So, I downloaded a slideshow templates and I'm trying to make a timelapse with 900 pictures converted into 30 fps to get a 30 seconds video but after exporting my movie why is my video length 15 minutes?

    What settings are you using to export the video with?  I think 29.97fps is the only one that works with LR 5:

  • Exporting to doc/docx format.

    Firstly, I've submitted the following to Apple as Pages feedback, however they will not feedback to me an explanation for the observations below, so I'm submitting this because someone else may have an explanation and confirmation.
    Under Mavericks and Pages 5.0.1, Apple have made it harder to convert to doc/docx, since now you have to export to other formats, but when I do export a pages document to doc/docx format then the file size of the doc/docx documents are far smaller than in the pages format. For example, I have a pages document that is 332kb, and when I export it to doc/docx, those documents have sizes 19/12 kb. You might say that the pages document has macros, formatting information, etc, that the doc/docx forms don't, but the content looks the same, and when I re-save the doc/docx documents in pages format, they're both saved as 332kb documents.
    Also, when displaying in doc/docx form, the filename displayed at the very top of the document in the title space has a .pages suffix instead of a .doc/.docx suffix - ok, they're pages documents compatible with Word formatting, but their name in Finder has the .doc/.docx suffix so it should be kept when displayed in the title space of the displayed document. The latter may be a bug, but the following is certainly a bug. The doc/docx documents I've been referring to have had the year 2013 as part of their filename - when these filenames are displayed in the title, the year is being treated as a formatted number, hence the 2013 is being displayed as 2,013 - I emphasise that this does not happen when the pages form of the document is displayed.

    Dear fruhulda and Peter,
         Thanks for replying.
          fruhulda - your reply about the size would imply either that Pages carries with it a lot more features (and thus code) than Word, or that the coding of Pages is, in some way, less efficient than Word - and I don't think either of those is true. The discrepancy in file size is inexplicable, and I've found an article from which this quote opines the same: "That's right: the only way to handle documents in Pages is by saving your working documents as .pages files – which are, inexplicably, often 10 or more times larger than their Word .DOC equivalent – and then exporting .DOC versions as and when you need them." (http://www.zdnet.com/why-i-may-never-install-office-for-mac-again-7000023520/).  In fact, how does Apple get Pages not only to read and write Word files but also PDF files? I can only imagine that Apple have bought use of the relevant routines from Microsoft and Adobe, but the latter both keep a tight rein on their proprietary products. For instance, Office for Mac has, presumably, been developed by Microsoft since I can't find it for sale in the Apple Store. Hence, you may be right that Pages only saves documents in its own format, and documents in other formats call upon routines external to Pages. Regarding the suffix or extension being part of the filename, there's no reason for not including it as part of the file name since, for instance, X.doc is only distinguishable from X.docx by the suffix; and, for instance, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/8.3_filename includes the suffix when referring to the filename.
         Peter - first, thanks for the key combination, abling you to do something useful that I didn't know; and following are the results of that tip. The first image is the display of name of the .docx file in the title space of the document:
    When I then click on the triangle, or if I save the document, I get the following:

  • Trouble exporting to .doc

    I have never had an issue exporting a .pages file to a .doc in the past. Here recently I have encountered an issue. When using File > Export > Word for some reason it now says "An unexpected error has occurred." The software is up to date, I restarted the application, and tried shutting down the computer with no luck. Please someone help?

    Dear Peter,
    Thank you so much for your advice in adjusting my way of thinking.
    As I stated earlier, this problem was solved through iPad.
    I understand your point when you talk about using illegal characters for windows, but when I pasted the text into a new document, I kept the "untitled", so it's not the case.
    Disregarding the error, Apple should never use a "unexpected error"... if the user is doing something wrong, they should be more informative. I've been a Mac user for the past 8 years and i've never encountered such error.
    I appreciate your willing to help, but I solved the issue using iPad (with same text and with same name than in iMac). I can't use my own time trying to debugging Apple software, and anything that says "unexpected error" is, in my point of view, a bug. That's why I asked earlier how could I report this directly to them.
    Thank you very much for your time.
    I would mark your answer as helpful, but I'm not the creator of this discussion.
