Expose keyboard shortcuts seem to already be taken; i'm confused; help?
Hello,
I'm a mac newbie. Under the mac help instructions for expose, I find these instructions:
xposé provides a quick way to see all open application windows and switch between them. Press the F9 key to see all the windows you have open, or press the F10 key to see the open windows in the application you are currently using. To hide all open windows so you can see the desktop, press F11.
What I find is that f9, f10, and f11 are taken with other shortcuts on the keyboard and I can never get the expose shortcuts to work. I've played around and find no way around this.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks.
Ray, Thanks for the very helpful response.
To add to your discovery, it also appears that under system preferences/keyboard, there is a box that is defaulted "unchecked" that reads, "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys. When this option is selected, press the FN key to use the special features printed on each key."
That is why my keyboard is over-riding the function keys b/c it is unchecked. When I check this box the expose works as intended.
I also find that my mouse is set up to have the "side" buttons linked with expose.
Under the keyboard shortcuts, I can see where I can check/uncheck the keyboard options but not change them. Still playing around with it...but you definitely solved it for me.
I will mark as such. Good work! Thanks.

Expose Keyboard Shortcut Changes Don't Affect Slow-Mo
Because I use my F keys for working in the Adobe CS2 Suite, I have changed the Expose keyboard shortcuts to require the ctrl key.
However, this did not change the slow-motion Expose key combinations. For example: while the F10 Adobe shortcut now works on the Adobe App, when I try to use the Shift-F10 Adobe shortcut I still get the slow-motion Expose. I do not see that keyboard shortcut anywhere in the preferences menus, so I don't know how to re-map it.
I don't want to lose the slow-mo... I still want it because it still causes envy in my PC using friends! I just want to re-map it.
Can anyone give me a suggestion? Thanks.
PS: This brings up a suggestion: since Apple makes all their own hardware why not put in separate buttons or other hardware controls for Expose & Dashboard? If Microsoft can single-handedly get all their IBM cloners to put a Windows key on all their PCs (genius marketing in the guise of usability), I don't' see why Apple can't do the same with the hardware they design and manufacture (and their button would actually be useful!)
PowerBook 15" Mac OS X (10.4.3) Mac newbie - Have Athlon desktop PC at home - works on a PC based network at worI have a similar problem, where I try to publish a flash file using shift-F12 and instead get the slow expose. I really don't care for it, just want to totally disable it. Anyone know how?

Duplicate expose keyboard shortcuts?
I have just bought an apple keyboard to use with my macbook. On the internal keyboard, I use the keys F8-F12 for spaces, expose and dashboard shortcuts. However, on the external keyboard, those keys are used for play, fast forward, and volume controls.
Is it possible to add a second mapping of the shortcuts for expose, etc, to some of the F13-F19 keys (which don't seem to be used for anything else)?
I don't want to just change the keys in the system prefs for expose and spaces to be those higher F-keys, because then when i unplug the keyboard, I won't be able to use the original keys on the internal keyboard.
any ideas?
thanks in advance!Ray, Thanks for the very helpful response.

A keyboard shortcut seems to crash CS5
Since beginning my trial of CS5 I have been crashing under certain circumstances. I may have isolated the problem, but I wonder if anyone else has had this problem or can reproduce it.
FYI. I am using a brand new 17" Macbook Pro w/ 8 GB or ram. I also tested the Ram with Rember (plus I saw the same crashes before I upgraded from 4 GB of ram). I have tried all the remedies I have seen suggested such as, deleting preferences, checking my fonts (using Font Doctor), turning off flick panning and open GL, deleting all my caches- including font caches.
I'm using PS CS5 12.01, OS 10.6.5. The same crash happened under 10.6.4.
Here is the crash report I just sent Adobe:
"I think I have gotten my crashes down to their essence. I believe it has to do with having my keyboard shortcut for "Standard Screen mode" set to opt-F11 (or perhaps any shortcut would do the same thing.
1. open image
2. use shortcut set in "keyboard shortcuts" to go to Full Screen with Menu Bar mode (F11).
3. Use rectangular marquee tool to make a selection.
4. Image>Crop
5. Use shortcut set in "keyboard shortcuts" to go to Standard Screen mode (opt-F11)
Instant crash!"
I have used these same Keyboard Shortcuts without a problem in CS3 and CS4.
While this seems to crash CS5 consistently, I can't be sure whether it is something with my machine or with CS5, or whether CS5 might also crash under some other conditions. Trying to trouble shoot this stuff is very frustrating!!!
If any users (or Adobe) can see if this does the same thing on their systems it might help to identify a bug.
Also, if anyone has an alternate explanation or a fix please let me know.Hello Chris,
I sure do. I was hoping you'd want to see it! Good luck in finding the cause!! I could also send my keyboard shortcuts .kys file if you think that would help with trouble shooting. Incidentally, I always place my keyboard shortcut file in User>LIbrary>Application Support> Adobe > Adobe Photoshop CS_ > Presets > Keyboard Shortcuts.
Thanks for taking the time to look into this.

Keyboard shortcut to duplicate seq-not intuitive
I find the keyboard shortcut for duplicating seqs in PPro very odd. On a Mac...most apps use the common shortcut of - cmd-"D". PPro use of shft-cmd- \ is a bit odd.
Yes I know I can remap but it seems common software global key commands would be the default. Isn't cmd-"D" true in AE?...not sure.
My last comment while in this mode...I feel keyboard shortcuts should be designed for one hand usage with out tremendous acrobatics. Thus allowing the other hand to be mostly on the mouse.
All Adobe products really should share more of the same common keyboard shortcuts.I've already been told by a staffer for one of the other programs that unifying the gui & shorts are considered a worthwhile and not overly daunting part of the process; actually, a necessary set of steps. An iterative part, and yes partly fueled by internal wishes to have a sweet 'suite' and partly by comments from the base. Not a huge must-have-completely-and-forever-finalized by next release, but as part of the ongoing development of the programs. Plural. Manageable workload, and for a perceived worthwhile gain. How & what the changes are ... completely open-ended discussions.
You keep going to the AeFx side of things. That's the program I use the least currently. Which is of course subject to change as my skills and experience and (naturally) needs build. The length of the shorts pdf for that compared to say PrPro is almost laughable. Wow, that's ... a lot of shorts to even think of learning! But then, AeFx is an amazing program. Even for video software. Still, the total number of shorts that would be changed for a "unified set" option isn't that many, really.
For me, your objections are quite similar to say, two people looking at the same building. It's got ... shall we say, "character"? There are pipes hanging across hallways at varying heights, floors that shift up or down an inch or two or four randomly, halls that narrow around wider rooms then open back out, and lights and their accompanying switches placed in a totally random way.
One person says ... leave it as is, ANYONE can just look around and see they need to pay attention to moving around here ... let 'em do so and get on with life.
The other person says ... if we start working on some of this chaos, over time we'll have a building much easier to get around and work in. Fewer knocked noggins on the pipes, less time hunting for light-switches, fewer trips over sudden floor changes.
One chooses which person he/she will be in this scenario. And will probably switch viewpoints depending on the particular issue.
A last comment ... yea, I've noted I've not heard any complaints from any AeFx types other than you. Interesting, eh?

Conflicts in keyboard shortcuts
I have recently switched from a PC to a Mac. While using MS Word, Shift-F3 is a keyboard shortcut for changing the case of letters. On my iMac this keyboard shortcut seems to be conflicting with another application, probably Expose. I can't figure out how to disable the other shortcut so that I can get this shortcut to work as expected in MS Word. Is there a way I can change this and, perhaps later on, other shortcuts.
Thank you in advanceF3 is used for Spaces and Exposé.
Option-F3 is Spaces.
F3 is Exposé for all windows.
Control-F3 is Exposé for the current application only.
Command-F3 is Exposé for the Desktop.
Shift added to any Exposé function does that function in slow motion, so Shift-F3 is a slow Exposé for all windows.
If you want to use Shift-F3 for some other function, in the "Keyboard" tab of "Keyboard" system preference, check the box "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys". You will then have to hold the Fn key to use F3 for Exposé or Spaces. -
Option-Letter Combinations Won't Work in Keyboard Shortcuts
In order to set what my hands and my Avant Stellar programmable keyboard are used to, I need to change the edit keystroke combinations from Command-X (Cut), Command-C (Copy), etc., to Option-X, Option-C, etc.
But I can't get Keyboard Shortcuts to work with Option-letter combinations. The proper combination shows up in the Keyboard Shortcuts screen and even in the Pages menu, but the keystroke combinations don't work. Instead of the requested menu action, I get what looks like an "approximately equals" sign (for Option-X), a letter from a foreign alphabet (for Option-C) or the beginning of a square root sign (for Option-V).
The Keyboard Shortcuts screen shows no warning of a conflict, and none of the default Keyboard Shortcuts seems to use these precise keystroke combinations.
Does Keyboard Shortcuts not support Option-letter combinations? I've got it to work with several other keystroke combinations, so I don't think I'm missing anything basic. But I can't find anything in Apple Help, this Website or on Google saying that Option-letter combinations are verboten.
I was trying to set up Keyboard Shortcuts in a restricted account, which I use for daily work for security reasons, but I also tried the same things in an administrative account and got the same results. It shouldn't make any difference, should it? I also tried both left and right Alt keys (the equivalent of Option on my keyboard), with no difference.
Any ideas, anyone? Thanks for the quick reply. On second thought, I don't think Ukelele will do what I want.
The problem is not switching or reprogramming keys. My present keyboard (an Avant Stellar) is fully programmable. It can even double the same output on two or more keys.
My problem is Apple's keyboard shortcuts. The right and left word navigation and selection functions, which I use thousands of times a day for navigating text, are welded to the Option key. So are Apple's (inflexible) special character keys. So if I program my keyboard to put the much-used navigation/selection functions under the same keystroke combinations I've been using for twenty years, many of my other usual keystroke combos become useless (they give me unwanted characters).
There is a solution, however: OpenOffice. I recently discovered that the slightly dumbed-down version that comes with Ubuntu Linux Netbook (which I installed on my Acer Aspire One) has a much more flexible keyboard shortcut feature than OS X, plus a macro capability. In less than an hour, I had my Acer keyboard configured closely enough to my habitual board for normal use. I then downloaded OpenOffice 3.1.1 on my Mini, and in another twenty minutes had both its and the Acer's keyboards configured as identically as the Acer's hardware permits.
So OpenOffice, not Apple, may have saved me the ignominy (and frustration) of continuing to use M/S Word, which I've wanted to jettison ever since I switched to Macs in 2003 and had to abandon WordPerfect.
Oracle, which just acquired Sun, swears on its Website that it will continue supporting OpenOffice (which Sun developed to poke M/S). Time will tell. Meanwhile, I've got OpenOffice, Pages and Word running in my working account, and I suspect I'll be using Open Office from now on for most serious writing. I like Apple's intuitive presentation of formulas in Numbers (its spreadsheet program), but Pages is for multimedia, multitasking Millennials, not serious writers. -
Keynote crashing when using the keyboard shortcut to play the presentation
This has happened twice to me now in the last two days. I haven't been using Keynote regularly, but will be giving more lectures at uni, so hope this is something that can be solved. Each time Keynote crashed, I had an unsaved Word document but when my macbook restarted, the word document was still there, and the keynote presentation was gone. Is there any way to auto-save keynote presentations, and no, I don't have a time capsule yet.
Thanks, DerekIt is more of because when your keyboard shortcut is set to that, the command given to the computer is only to shutdown the default way, which Apple made it to reopen windows when logging back in. And when u said that it was a preference to reopening windows when logging back in, it is not a preference. It is more of a question whether u want to reopen when u are shutting down/restarting your computer.
I also have a similar problem, but it is not about the keyboard shortcuts. I want to create a program to help restart into bootcamp, but when I restart back into Mac OS, it helps reopen the windows. -
How do I create a keyboard shortcut for a nested finder menu item?
Specifically I'm trying to create a keyboard shortcut for Finder>Services>Mail>Send File.
Any help would be appreciated.pmasitti,
Under System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard Shortcuts, click on the "+" sign. From the drop-down menu choose Application: Finder, Menu Title: "Send File" (without the quotes), Keyboard Shortcut: whatever.
Close system System Preferences and quit the Finder for the change to take effect. You can easily quit and relaunch the Finder from the Apple Menu > Force Quit. Select Finder and click on the Relaunch button.
For the action to complete, select the Finder item before pressing your keyboard short cut.
Worked for me... good luck!

MAC Remote Desktop Keyboard shortcuts
It drives me crazy when in Mac I use cmd+c cmd+v while when using Remote Connection I need use crtl+c crtl+v.
Parallels in theirs solution support both combinations in Windows.
Can you add option to Remote Connection for Mac to personalize (redirect) shrotcuts ?Hi Rafal,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
You can try below 2 methods, if it success for you.
Method 1:
You can set universal keyboard shortcuts in System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Application Shortcuts > All Applications, you can enter menu values (Save, Copy, Paste, etc) and then assign new key combinations to
them.
Method 2:
1. On the RDC menu, click Preferences, and then click
Keyboard.
2. In the Mac column, double-click the keyboard shortcut that you want to change, and then press the combination of keys that you want to use instead.
NOTE: The new combination of keys must include one modifier key and at least one additional key, such as CONTROL + F10 .

I used to be able to refresh a page by hitting the F5 key. With 4.0.1, that does not seem to work. Is there a different keyboard shortcut, or can I create one?
Click the Refresh button on the right hand side of the location bar container on the Navigation Toolbar or press "Ctrl + R" or F5 to reload a web page.
Reload web page(s) and bypass the cache.
* Press and hold Shift and left-click the Reload button.
* Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
* Press "Cmd + Shift + R" (MAC) -

Can't seem to create keyboard shortcuts
I have just purchased a Mac mini and am brand new to Apple so I presume I am running 10.6.2 but if more info is required you may need to direct me a little. My old PC died and I was sold the Mac mini as a drop-in replacement that could use my new screen / keyboard.
I am unable to work out how to create a keyboard shortcut e.g., to associate the 'Home' key with 'Go to beginning of line.' I can get into System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Keyboard & Text Input OK. Clicking on the plus sign (Add an application shortcut) beneath the lists brings down the sub-panel with Application | Menu Title | Keyboard Shortcut OK.
The problem is that I can only enter keys from the numeric keypad and arrow key cluster in the Keyboard Shortcut field, but nothing from the main section of the keyboard or the Ins / Del / Home / End / PgUp / PgDn cluster. Not letters, or numbers, or any other keystrokes that I can tell. I just get the system bell.
It is a new Logitech keyboard which I set to US International layout as I work with accented character sets. Any assistance appreciated. You wouldn't be able to define that specific shortcut anyway. Try using Control-B (Off the top of my head; this page has a full list of them) to move to the beginning of a textfield / line.

Is there a way to use Frame 8 keyboard shortcuts in 9?
I understand that there is a new UI, but my coworker wants to remain on Frame 8 if he can't use the shortcuts he's been using for 15 years (muscle memory lasts a long time). Is there any way (a preference maybe) to use the F8 shortcuts? I saw a trick for scrolling through paragraph styles starting with the same letter using the down arrow. (Hello Adobe? It is not reasonable to suggest having headings names start with a unique letter. There are huge and current books that have all their tags already. And there are only but so many letters.) If there is no way to use F8, is there a table somewhere of what to do now?
Thanks so much.

So here are a few specific problems:
1. Ctrl 8 and 9 make you use the down arrow key to cycle through letters. How would I change the ini file so that I could just keep hitting the letter?
2. When I start typing something and then realize I've hit the wrong letter, it seems I need to backspace to the begining to correct it. I used to be able to just start up with the correct letter.
3. Sometimes I hit Ctrl 9 and I do not get the small box where the style names display, I only see the arrow that I then need to mouse over to and click to list the styles. Why is that?
4. If I accidently hit Ctrl 8 when I wanted 9 (for example), I have to hit escape and then start again. Previously, hitting the correct sequence twice would get me where I wanted.
That's all I can think of now...I appreciate the assistance...jen
The operation of the menu that opens with Ctrl+8 and similar commands has changed in recent releases. It's not clear if it's due to a bug or a design intention. You can ask for a bug fix or feature enhancement at Adobe - Feature Request/Bug Report Form.
Search FrameMaker help for Keyboard Shortcuts for lists of useful shortcuts. Even if you open a menu with a different shortcut - say Escape q p, or Escape q c (quick paragraph or character format list) instead of Ctrl+8 or 9, the menu still misbehaves.
I haven't tried typing a different shortcut with the Escape-key method, while in a "wrong" one, to see if that works as you remember the Ctrl+ method, but it's more keystrokes than typing Escape.
It's not customizable in maker.ini.
There are third-party keystroke recorder utilities that may be useful. For example, you could invoke a shortcut that opens a Ctrl+ or Escape-key menu, then types the specific command you want (without mis-typing) and executes it. Search for keystroke macro recorders on Google.

Keyboard shortcuts are not showing, but still exist!?
I've tried to look for this issue, but I can't seem to find anyone else experiencing this... it's a strange one. Here is the situation:
First, I'm speaking of iOS 5.0.1, and the keyboard shortcuts located under General->Keyboard->Shortcuts.
Upon upgrading to iOS 5, I was pretty stoked about this massive time-saver that was previously only possible through (already forgot the $5 app's name!) and was further restricted in the fact that the only apps it could be used in were those specifically coded to use its API. Anyway, thankful it's now native!
Was... thankful. When they were all showing up in the listing as they are supposed to. Something happened... maybe the upgrade from 5.0->5.0.1, I can't pinpoint a specific time when they all decided to turn to ghosts! Every last one of them, looks like they were erased... the list is totally bare. That's misleading, though, because the shortcuts that I had created still work fine! They just fail to show up in the list. Odd... There have been a couple of rare occassions that I cannot find a way to reproduce where I could just put something in the Search box, (any letter, or a space) and they would all show up again as if they never left!
Until you try and start editing or messing with any of them... any edits will crash the Settings app upon hitting Save. Additionally, you obviously cannot add a shortcut term that already exists then save it "overwriting" an old one as a trick... it just says it already exists and you can't use that shortcut term.
I did take some screenshots of when I got it to actually show up (and still have no idea what I did to cause them to briefly appear as search results -- I can try the same thing now and I get no results found. Anyone have any idea what in the world could be going on, or how I can fix this? It's a real pain, considering any new ones I add also disappear... so many of them that I created months ago, I can't recall what the exact shorthand was, and I'm out of
My only thought for a hopefully "sure fix" would be to do a RESET on keyboard settings. I'd like to avoid it if at all possible, as that's going to erase not only the mass of shortcuts that already exist, but will also reset my custom words/anything it has "learned" from my input.
As far as troubleshooting to see if anything made a difference-- I have added extra keyboards, removed all keyboards, changed the default keyboard to another language, you name it as far as adding or subtracting (or even changing software/hardware keyboard layouts out) -- all to no avail.
Here are the few screenshots I was able to get during the "fluke" time that I "sort of" got them to reappear:
Did a search on "s"--
I believe this was a freshly added one? Or it alone, showed up:
This one I simply searched on a single (space):
At no other point have I been able to recreate this temporary resurrection since then, but as proof that they still are in effect:
I'd really like to go in and change some of them, for instance, I defined "nm" as "not much" and instead, I find myself using that regularly as shorthand for nevermind (which I originally defined as n/m or nvm)... but any action on them... editing, deleting, etc... results in the Settings crash, as mentioned, immediately upon hitting Save... *boop* gone.
Do any of you brilliant minds have any suggestions to try that don't involve resetting the keyboard settings (wiping it out and redoing the OS is not an option for something that is really mostly an annoyance and inconvenience. Too much time, effort and trouble for me to have to do that, unfortunately... Has anyone seen or heard of this happening to anyone else? In closing, I can't tie the disappearance to any specific event, other than "possibly the 5.0.1 upgrade" (and that's just a guess).
What's not a guess was that my iPhone 4 was running super fast and battery worked great at 5.0! Was very happy! 5.0.1 destroyed this thing. It's now slow, constantly crashing, and my batttery (which unlike 4S owners) was working great... now I am having to charge it 3-4 times per day! That's not even with heavy usage! That's another story and has its own (very long and irate) thread. My thought: should've just stayed with 5.0; what possessed me to apply a patch for an issue that I wasn't even experiencing!
Oh, one last probably important bit of info -- firmware is clean, it's not JB or anything. Upgrade to 5.0 went smooth as can be, and I was very pleased with 5.0 -- now I'm considering downgrading back to 5.0 (thankfully saved my SHSH's) though I don't know the implications of what FURTHER havoc that could cause, so I'm patiently waiting for 5.1 to not fix everyone's issues! I never said I was an optimist, but I do consider myself a realist! *nods*
Crap. After posting this, I was able to find these other few users experiencing the same thing. Didn't mean to dupe post but at least here's the cross reference which I'll post there too:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/16707743#16707743I lost all my keyboard shortcuts on my iPhone 5s after upgrading to iOS 8. They still showed up on my iPad Air (iOS 8) and iMac (10.9.5). There were, however, massive sync problems, sometimes they would only flow from one device to all the others, sometimes from one device to only one of the other two, sometimes not at all.
I deleted all my shortcuts and started from scratch, deleting “~/Library/Application Support/Ubiquity”, ~/Library/Dictionaries” and “~/Library/Mobile Documents/com~apple~TextInput” from the iMac and KeyboardDomain from my iOS devices.
Rebooted everything a dozen times.
Toggled Documents & Data Sync off and on a dozen times too in all kinds of combination with rebooting and deleting the aforementioned files.
Everything always starts working and syncing fine for a very short while, but sooner or later one of my devices stops receiving new shortcuts as I re-add them.
I reboot that device and it catches up. I enter new shortcuts, and that device doesn’t get any new shortcuts. This time, a reboot doesn’t fix anything.
After using my devices for a while, I notice shortcuts are entirely gone from both the iPhone and iPad, but not from the iMac.
I even upgraded my iPhone 5s to a 6, and right off the bat it had issues with keyboard shortcut sync. I also setup my iPad as new, and same thing: right off the bat, sync issues with keyboard shortcuts.
