Extending the Interface

Suppose I create the following interface
package com.foo;
import javax.swing.ListModel;
public interface MyInterface extends ListModel
public void bar();
}MyInterface then can be said to enforce the contract of "ListModel".
So when I use it for my GUI, it works.
MyInterface myint = new MyInterfaceImpl();
JList list = new JList();
list.setModel(myint);I understand that ComboBoxModel extends from ListModel. Given this, I use it for the interface
hoping to be able to use the implementation of the interface for the model of both JList and JComboBox.
public interface MyInterface extends ComboBoxModel
public void bar();
MyInterface myint = new MyInterfaceImpl();
JComboBox box = new JComboBox();
box.setModel(myint);But I generate errors not only when I attempt to apply the updated interface to the model of the JList, but also when I apply it to the model of the JComboBox. But why? If the interface ComboBoxModel extends from the interface ListModel, why do problems arise?

Just to update...
I've managed to create a model that satisifies the model for both JList and JComboBox by using a class that extends DefaultComboBoxModel rather than extending the class DefaultListModel.
And I'm currently reviewing another thread relevant to the subject here..
http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=54&thread=519806
I understand that the interface defines an "is a" relationship between the implementation and the interface (ie ArrayList is a List etc..) So I might assume that it is the same to say that a ComboBoxModel is a ListModel, though this relationship is one of extension. javax.swing.ComboBoxModel extends javax.swing.ListModel. But I am confused as to why the increased specificity would cause the code to generate errors. Surely I am not taking away from the interface..If the interface extends from a subclass of ListModel, doesn't it continue to extend from ListModel?
The error message when I extend from CombBoxModel rather than ListModel is something like ...
setModel(javax.swing.ListModel) in javax.swing.JList cannot be applied to com.foo.MyInterface
Thanks

• Where should the interface be? (extending the Remote interface)?

Hello,
I've created a simple rmi server on one machine, sonsisting of two files:
OkServer.java:
import java.rmi.Remote;
import java.rmi.RemoteException;
public interface OkServer extends Remote {
public String getOk() throws RemoteException;
}OkServerImpl.java:
import java.rmi.Remote;
import java.rmi.RemoteException;
public interface OkServer extends Remote {
public String getOk() throws RemoteException;
}and on another machine, I've created a client:
import java.rmi.RMISecurityManager;
import java.rmi.Naming;
public class OkClient {
public static void main (String args[]) throws Exception {
if (args.length != 1)
throw new RuntimeException("Syntax: OkClient <hostname>");
System.setSecurityManager(new RMISecurityManager());
OkServer OkSvr = (OkServer)Naming.lookup("rmi://" +
args[0] + "/OkServer");
String when = OkSvr.getOk();
System.out.println(when);
}Now the problem is, when I try to compile the client (only consisting the file above),
it says of course:
OkClient.java:36: cannot find symbol
symbol : class OkServer
}This is normal, right?
Then, I should copy the interface (that is also at the server) to the client machine?
So the interface file HAS TO BE on both the server and the client????

If you want to install OVM with the production option then you will basically need three distinct hosts:
a) the database host, where you install SE/EE on (XE is not for production use and not supported for production use!)
b) install OVM Manager on any computer running OEL 5 (or later)
c) install OVM Server on a bare metal host who's hardware is supported
As far as the SE/EE license goes: Oracle always allows anyone to download and install their software to try it out. If you are putting your setup into production, that is not covered and demands an support contract with Oracle. And from using Oracle for many years, there will come the day when you will need it… ;)
So long story short: grab the Oracle SE/EE installation and be familiar with it - Oracle DB that is, otherwise you'll be sitting there pulling your hair out and yell at your computer.
Or, try the not yet released 3.2.x version of OVMM with runs against MySQL - most likely the easy way to go.

• Unable to Extend the VO of iExpense "Create Expense Report"

Hi OAF Gurus,
I have done several VO Extensions successfully but facing issues in this one.
Screen shots an be seen at : (+Tech Stack , Development Steps+ )
[http://picasaweb.google.com/chaitanyadubey/IExpenseVOExtension#|http://picasaweb.google.com/chaitanyadubey/IExpenseVOExtension#]
What is our Requirement?
We have implemented Oracle iExpense Module, in which SSI needs to customize the ‘Create Expense Report’ User Interface (OAF page)
Specifically on this page (‘Create Expense Report’), we need to hide/show certain input fields based on the ‘Expense Type’ selected by the user.
What is our Approach?
I have identified ‘VO Extension’ (BC4J View Object Extension) as the standard approach for meeting this requirement.(Recommended by Oracle)
What I want to do is , Extend the underlying oracle’s VO object, add a transient attribute type ‘Boolean’, generate the RowImpl of extended VO, write logic in Getter of transient attribute, to return TRUE/FALSE based on expense type.
Using personalization add the SPEL expression to the field we want to Hide/show.
What is going wrong?
I extend Oracle’s VO
I add a transient Attribute.
Execute the Page, this gives an error : JBO-26000: A Generic exception occurred during loading Customizations
What we could do?
We could extend and add attributes to other oracle’s VO(s) on this page, which means we know how to do VO Extensions
Details :
We need to extend oracle's VO and add a transient attribute.
### Steps to Reproduce the issue ###
Step 1
Created a new OAWorkSpace and new OAProject
Added Oracle's package (oracle.apps.ap.oie.server) to project
Added the Page File "/oracle/apps/ap/oie/entry/header/webui/GeneralInformationPG.xml"
Create a new VO (ssi.oracle.apps.ap.oie.server.DetailReceiptBasedVOEx) , Extend Oracle's
VO oracle.apps.ap.oie.server.DetailReceiptBasedVO
click .jpx file to go to Subsitution and replace oracle's VO (DetailReceiptBasedVO) with custom VO
(DetailReceiptBasedVOEx)
Click Run Option in JDEV and -Djbo.project=OAProjectLast (OAProjectLast being name for our project)
Run "GeneralInformationPG", enter "propose" field, press Next.
Brings us to "Cash and Other Expenses" page
Click on "Details"
This takes the user to "/oracle/apps/ap/oie/entry/lines/webui/ExpenseDetailsPG" page
All pages work , no problem.
we can go to "about this page" so see that the substitution is done properly.
Step 2:
Add a Transient Attribute in ssi.oracle.apps.ap.oie.server.DetailReceiptBasedVOEx (tried , with
passivate,without passivate option , no luck)
Run "GeneralInformationPG", enter "propose" field, press Next.
Brings us to "Cash and Other Expenses" page
Click on "Details"
ERROR (stack Trace attached)
(if we remove this transient variable then code works fine)

Hi Sumit,
I removed the subsitution => page works
I extended the VO, "without" adding transient attriute , made the subsitution => page works
I tried adding a transient attribute of type String / Varchar2 => page does not work, same error , no luck !
Thanks for the help ,pls let me know if you have any other ideas.

• ABAP-OO: Another Layer (1 Interface) vs. extending N Interfaces?

Hello,
this is a crosspost from Stackoverflow, any advice greatly appreciated.
I have an Data-Access Layer (SAP ABAP, but the language does not matter here) where I have 1 interface per entity/database-table, like
IF_DATA_CONTRACT_HEAD->get_contract_header( )
IF_DATA_OBJECT_CALC->get_object_calculations( )
40 more ...
These interfaces are implemented by the actual database-access class-impls and a generated caching-layer, which is pretty simple since the methods really do not have any parameters and just return "the relevant" data.In certain consumers however, I require a filtered access to the returned data, specifically I need to get the data of all interfaces (~50) constrained by contract-position.So, do you recommend to
A) extend all interfaces by an optional parameter like IF_DATA_CONTRACT_POSITION->get_contract_positions() which means my impl and my caching-layer gets more complex
B) should I create another interface IF_DATA_FILTER_CONTRACT_POSITION->set_contract_position_filter? for the sole purpose of explicitly filtering data-acesss
A) When extending every existing interface (the ~40-50 listed above) with the optional contract-position filter/constraint, the API is quite clean and would look like the following:
result = lo_data_object_calc->get_object_calculations( <FILTER> ).
As already mentioned, it would require me to extend every implementation, the data-access as well as the generated caching-layer.
B) With the explicit filter-interface IF_DATA_FILTER_CONTRACT_POSITION on the other hand, I would have yet another interface-layer around data-access and I could generate the uncoupled filtering impls. I would neither need to touch the actual data-access impl nor the generated cache-layer. However, the usage would be a little more clumsy, like
TRY. " down-cast from data-interface to filter-interface
DATA lo_object_filter ?= lo_data_object_calc.
lo_object_filter->set_contract_position_filter( <FILTER> ).
CATCH could_not_cast.
RAISE i-need-a-filter-impl!
ENDTRY.
result = lo_data_object_calc->get_object_calculations( ).

Update 05.08.2014: I decided to go with
C) create a seperate filter-object which explicitly filters the tables retrieved by e.g. get_object_calculations( ).
Reasoning: Separation of Concerns, explicit semantic of filtering, no need to update all interfaces or regenerate caching-layer.

• Unable to extend the basic type "SALESORDER_CREATEFROMDAT202"

HI
when iam trying to extend the IDOC basic type "SALESORDER_CREATEFROMDAT202" iam getting an error message "Action is not possiable for generated IDOC types"
To my understanding SALESORDER_CREATEFROMDAT202 is a bapi.So, I guess we can not extend these type of IDOC directly.
Can any one can help me how to copy the BAPI interface and extend it....
or any other solution for this......
can any one can help me reg this.....

I will answer my question!
This is the proble of version we are useing!
the extenction is possiable in sap 4.6 version.
but it is not possiable in ecc6.
So follow the steps i have done
created a new basic type "ZSALESORDER_CREATEFROMDAT202"
where icopy the basic type "SALESORDER_CREATEFROMDAT202" to it
Then i extened the IDOC "ZSALESORDER_CREATEFROMDAT202"
and added the new segments.
FInally while assiging the basic type to extended IDOC given basic type as "SALESORDER_CREATEFROMDAT202"
And assigned to the message type "SALESORDER_CREATEFROMDAT2" to it
then we can use this Structure with
Message type: SALESORDER_CREATEFROMDAT2
Basic type: SALESORDER_CREATEFROMDAT202
Extended:SALESORDER_CREATEFROMDAT202EX
for data picking u can code in the followin function modules:
Function Module for Outbound ALE
ALE_SALESORDER_CREATEFROMDAT2
Function Module for Inbound ALE
IDOC_INPUT_SALESORDER_CREATEFR
There is another method also for this:
create a bapi fm with all the requirements and go to swo1 tc create an object with method as BAPI FM created.then go to TC bdbg and create a bapi ale interface.this will automatically generates the inbound and outbound FM's .Then the idoc will be generated with the added segments...

• I need help in "HOW TO EXTEND THE DATA TYPE SYSTEM"......

Hi All,
I need to add new data type like SDO_GEOMETRY in spatial Oracle.
I don't mean the User-Defined Datatype but new datatype embed in the database.
I read the Data Cartridge Developer's Guide but it has info how to use more efficiently UDT through indexes.
Anybody used the “Type System” under Databases and Extensibility Services?
It might be written in C++ or Java but I do not know how.
Any hints and help will be appreciated.
Thanks,

> In Figure 1-1 Oracle Services, there is a "Type System" as Oracle Services.
The "Type System" is merely a compartmentalising the data type handling and implementation code/modules in Oracle.
This covers all types. Oracle native types, user defined types (UDTs), etc.
Saying that you want to create a new type in the "Type System" is basically saying you want to use the CREATE TYPE SQL command in Oracle.
> So, I want new_type1 and new_type2 behave like other built-in types, just the way
SDO_GEOMETRY works in Oracle Spatial Cartridge.
Not familiar with the SDO_GEOMETRY. Why do you mention this type specifically? What do you want to do similar?
> I have already done it with user-defined types. Now I need to do this way so that I can
compare and contrast in terms of speed, space...etc for part of my research.
Hmm.. I'm not sure what you are trying to compare ito of a UDT and Data Cartridge extensions. It is not one or the other. What research is this if I may ask?
Simplistically you extend the Type System with a new UDT/ADT. And there you have a new type data can be used in the SQL Engine and the PL/SQL engine. The OCI (Oracle Call Interface) supports such types via the OCI object API calls - which means this new type can also be used from Oracle clients written in Delphi, C++, Java, etc.
That new type can be a complex type. This type may need specific management code (memory management, context management, internationalisation, etc). To support this you can extend the UDT/ADT further by developing Cartridge Basic Service interfaces for the type - designing and writing management code to, for example, support specific internationalisation requirements when dealing with multibyte character sets.
You can also extend the UDT/ADT to be custom managed ito indexing, determining query optimisation, computing costs of custom methods/functions/operators on this custom data type. These extensions are done by developing Data Cartridge interfaces for the type.
Thus I cannot see what you are trying to compare. It is not one layer/interface versus another. These layers exist for all Oracle types (in the Type System). Oracle not only allows you to add to the top layer by adding/defining a new data type. It also allows you to customise (if needed) the layers below it.

• Concrete classes implement abstract class and implements the interface

I have one query..
In java collection framework, concrete classes extend the abstract classes and implement the interface. What is the reason behind extending the class and implementing the interface when the abstract class actually claims to implement that interface?
For example :
Class Vector extends AbstractList and implements List ,....
But the abstract class AbstractList implements List.. So the class Vector need not explicitly implement interface List.
So, what is the reason behind this explicit definition...?
If anybody knows please let me know..
Thanx
Rajendra.

Why do you post this question again? You already asked this once in another thread and it has been extensively debated in that thread: http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=31&thread=347682

• Extending the Socket class...

I need some help. The class below, SimpleSocket, extends the built-in
Socket class and adds two methods to it. These methods are meant to
make the class a bit more user-frienly but simplifying the reading-from
and writing-to a Socket object. Here it is:
bq. import java.net.*; \\ import java.io.*; \\ public class SimpleSocket extends Socket { \\ BufferedReader in; \\ PrintWriter out; \\ public void println(String line) throws IOException \\ { \\ if (out == null) { out = new PrintWriter(this.getOutputStream(), true); } \\ out.println(line); \\ } \\ public String readLine() throws IOException \\ { \\ if (in == null) { in = new BufferedReader( new InputStreamReader(this.getInputStream())); } \\ return in.readLine(); \\ } \\ }
If I want to create a new SimpleSocket, it's easy - I can instantiate it like a normal Socket:
bq. SimpleSocket socket = new SimpleSocket(host,port); // assume host & port have been defined
Now, lets say I have a Socket object that I didn't created - for
example, a Socket returned from the ServerSocket class - like this:
bq. ServerSocket serverSocket = new ServerSocket(port); \\ Socket clientSocket = serverSocket.accept(); // returns the socket for communicating with a client
Now that I have a regular Socket object, is there some what to
"upgrade" it to a SimpleSocket? Something like this: (pseudocode):
bq. clientSocket.setClass(SimpleSocket); // this is pseudocode
Or, could I make a SimpleSocket constructor that accepted a Socket
object as a parameter and then used it instead of creating a new
object? Like this: (psuedocode):
bq. public SimpleSocket(Socket S) \\ { \\ super = S; // this is pseudocode \\ }
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

lindsayvine wrote:
Ok, this makes sense and this is what I will probably do. However, there are three limitations to this method that I don't like:
1. I would like to be able to pass the SimpleSocket object around as a normal Socket. I would like SimpleSocket to be castable to a Socket.Would you? What for? Are you sure? Would input and output streams not be better objects to pass around? You might well have the requirement you say you have, but I say it's an assumption to be challenged, at the very least
2. I would like every method of the Socket object to be available - this would means that I have to rewrite out every method in SimpleSocket - instead of just saying "hey SimpleSocket, you should have every method Socket has"Yep. But using inheritance simply to avoid some typing is no reason to use inheritance. This is all providing that you need to have every method available. Remember, if any dependent code needs the underlying socket object, your interface can always expose it
3. If I do write out every method, but then the Socket object gets new methods in future versions of Java, I will have to add the new ones.Likewise, in the case of such a change to java.net.Socket, your subclass has a very real chance of breaking. Again, consider if your code needs to exactly replicate everything a Socket does
Can you think of any way around these problems?
Sure. Re-think your design

• Whats the difference between extending the xls mapper functions and xpath

What is the whole deal about extending the xlst mapper functions or the xpath functions?
any insight about the diferences would be greatly appreciated. I mena shouldnt the functions for xlst be the sames that are available for xpath?
regards,
gabs

Unfortunately, XPath and XSL are two different standards, and the implementation of functions at the Java level uses a different interface. So a custom XPath function is not automatically reusable in XSL and vice versa.
The core java code might be the same, but you need to code different "wrappers" for XPath and XSL.

• Interface extends another interface

Hi,
Java has the concept of inheritance for both classes and interfaces.
For classes inheritance is restricted to single inheritance. For multiple
inheritance the class should implement an interface.
But what about interfaces? Is multiple inheritance defined for interfaces?
If so, is there any documentation on this? Are there OO-design-considerations
that argue against multiple inheritance for interfaces?
Thanks for your remark or pointing to literature,
Sponiza

You should try it and see. But, not to spoil the surprise, yes Java allows an interface to extend multiple interfaces, and yes, like most everything else there are design considerations to doing this. You might wade through the long discussion here:
http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?thread=479908&forum=4&message=2241590
and hit google or search these fora

• Tracing the interface consumers

Hi all,
We have many interfaces Legacy Applications -> XI -> ECC, like "get_customer_list", "get_customer_detail", "get_material_detail", etc... Actually we have about 80 interfaces like these, used by about 130 legacy apps. These apps are using a .net component to access XI web services.
Is there a way to know which app is using an specific interface at an specific time? In RWB i can see in performance monitoring how much the interfaces are been used, but I couldn't find a way to discover, for example, which application is the greatest consumer of those interfaces.
I have tried to create one "party" for each app, and reconfigure the integration scenario for those parties, to see the "sender party" at RWB in a way I could use this information to filter it, but it didn't work.
Have tried too insert a "consumer" information into the request messages, but then I need to have and application to open each log message to get the information (at the moment I didn't find where is the table where the messages are stored).
Have tried to use different users for each application, but couldn't find a way to use this information on RWB to make a filter.
Do you have some tip?
thanks!
roberti

Hi Waldemar,
You can use parties for this, but with the performance monitor use the following options:
Display: Overview Aggregated
select your interface in the Extended Search (fill nothing in the Party field)
In the performance data section click the button "Display options" and select the check box of party, service and interface.
Then the rapport will count the number of message per sending party, service and interface combination-.
kind regards,
Frank

• Interfaces that extend other interfaces

I am trying to get a handle on the concept of interfaces extending other interfaces, and I just want to bounce my thoughts off the board and see where it goes. The Sun tutorial doesn't provide a lot of detail that I can see.
Suppose we have interface A which has 3 methods (signatures), and interface B which extends interface A and adds two methods of its own. Suppose also we have a class C which can implement A or B or both.
1. Having B extend A provides a heirarchy of types, with A above B
2. If class C implements interface B, then the extends relationship B has with A forces C to provide implementations for the methods of A as well as B. On this point I am not certain.
3. Having B extend A allows us to essentially add methods to the interface defined by A without forcing those changes on owners of the classes that already extend A.
Sound OK? Anywone have anything to add?

Not sure what you're saying, here, but extending A means we're defining a type that's a specialized or >enhanced type of A. Implementors can implement A if all they need is a run of the mill A, or B if they need the >specialized/enhanced version.Thanks.
What I meant was that class C implements interface A, and interface B is not a part of the picture yet. Then, by creating a new interface B that extends A, rather than just adding the new methods to A, then you are not forced to add new method implementation to class C right away.That would be one situation in which one might do that. Of course, it's also not uncommon to design the two distinct interfaces from the start
Ok I'll pick up on that, the situation that led to this thread was me trying to understand why the List interface extends the Collection interface, and why the ArrayList class implements both interfaces. And I eventually decided that designing kind of an arrangement makes sense from the start as you say, because there are probably reasons why you'd want that type heirarchy, or higher level abstraction. with different levels of functionality in the respective implementations. I can't really think of any other reason.

Hi balaji,
you can try to google for SAP R/3 IDoc Cookbook for EDI and Interfaces by Axel Angeli et.al.
Although Axel refers primarily to MATMAS Idoc the technique of extending IDOCs is explained very well.
Also very good is the search function here on SCN, I just found

How to extend the windows 2003 C drive ..? one of my DC is running out of space.

If you make a BartPE bootable ISO or CD, you can add a 'DiskPart' folder in your Plugins folder. Then put the following contents inside that 'DiskPart' folder. The file name should be "DiskPart.inf"
This will allow you to boot from the BartPE CD, open a command prompt, and use Diskpart like you would from within Windows normally. We extended C drives of old systems (VMs) many times this way. I'm reasonably sure our BartPE CD is based
