External Drive Back Up question

Sorry, this is a long one....
First off, my Mac consists of the following:
iMac with 1 TB HD running OS 10.6.8
500 GB External for Music
2 TB with 1 TB partitions, one for time machine and the other for digital photo use
I recently purchased another 2 TB external hard drive to back up my digital photos, which I was going to do manually.  I came across some info that leads me to believe that time machine will do this external drive to external drive photo backup for me automatically.  Assuming this is the case, I would like to make this new 2 TB drive my time machine drive.
My question is, will time machine back up both my internal and one of my external hard drives to another external hard drive?  And if so, what is the process for swapping time maching drives?
Thanks for any information

As ssls6 mentioned yes TM will backup the external HD's. That being said you are playing with fire using the same physical HD to backup and also to store media. The reason being is if/when that drive fails (and it eventually will) you have lost both your photos (which are your memories!!!!) and your backup which could be a disaster. A general rule of thumb is backup HD's should be dedicated and not used for any other use.

  • How do I Retrieve imovie projects from and external drive back into my mac internal drive

How do I Retrieve imovie projects from and external drive back into my mac internal drive?
    Thank You

Every working drive, Internal or External, should produce an Icon on your Desktop. If you cannot see those, click on the Desktop (to get Finder) and choose Preferences off the Finder Menu. The general pane has checkboxes for "Show these items on the Desktop:"
Double click the Icon for your External Drive to open it. Open the folders on it until you find the Items you want to copy. Drag them to the Icon of your Internal Drive, or open the folder where you want them to land and drop them in there.
A drive that does not appear on the desktop after you have asked it to may be damaged. But it would be smart to do a Restart to see if it is recognized again at next Startup.

  • I-Tunes and and External Drive...Questions!

Hello, starting my music collection seriously for the 1st time and have some questions.
When you use an external drive how does i-Tunes recognize this?
Will it still allow me to browse through everything ( album artwork etc) as if the music was in the i-Tunes music folder or will it just be a bunch of folders listed on a drive.

OK, I am not sure that I can help you.
Have your tried pugging into a differnt usb port, do you have any other usb devices that you could try unplugging.
I wonder if fiddling with the drive letter qould help as in this Apple artcle about another problem relating to incorrect recognition of drives.

Are you upto date with all your downloads from your computer manufacturers support site?
Is there any support on the drive manufacturers site? This kind of thing does seem to crop up with external drives sometimes Windows doesn't even recognise them.

  • I cannot copy or transfer mp3 files stored on external drive back into itunes so i can listen to book again

    Hi,
I mostly use itunes for listening to audiobooks which I have been collecting for years. Have hundreds of them. A few years ago when computer too full and my itunes library too big I carefully copied the books onto an external hard drive as mp3 files and then removed them from itunes. (At that stage I really wanted a non itunes library backup as I had already lost library a couple of times....now I understand the itunes back up a bit more and can use it.)
However I have lots of my favourite books on an external drive and I want to listen to them again. I cannot go to the folder holding a book, select all the the mp3 files that make up the book and drag them into my itunes music file as I can with a mp3 disc. There are 73 files on the first book i want to move!
Itunes has been selected as the default player and will play the files but I cannot transfer them.
Under details on a file it reads NOT PROTECTED
I am  the administrator of my computer, indeed am its only user.
Cannot think of anything else that might  be useful.
    hope you can help
    Elizabeth

luckily that is also backed up on the external drive too so I'll try looking there, but do you have any thoughts on why I can't get the backed up files to stay on the PC correctly ? because until they are back on my PC I can't use it or get the rankings back right?

  • How do I move a project from an external drive back into Imovie

I recently bought an Iomega external hard drive to store documentary movies so that I wouldn't jam up my Imac's free space. However, after I moved an imovie/idvd project to it, and wanted to make changes, I could not move the project back into the Imac's drive. (It also would not burn from the external, giving me a multiplex error) When I tried to move the movie back into Imovie on the Imac it said Quicktime couldn't parse it. I saw various posts about parsing, but not about specifically about moving a project from an external drive. Can anyone offer any suggestions? It seems to me that I should be able to move a project back and forth without that much trouble.

Sounds like you have a DVD format (MPEG-2) and not an iMovie Project file.
The key phrases are "multiplex" and "parse". Both suggest MPEG-2 format when opened in QuickTime. It would also throw an error -2048 message if MPEG-2.
But another issue could be the file format of the external drive. Most ship pre-formatted for the Windows OS's but a Mac user should format using HFS+ (and others). If you didn't format the drive before moving the large iMovie Project onto it it may have become severely fragmented if the external used FAT 16 or FAT 32 (very common) formats. They have a 2 or 4 GB file size limit, respectively and would have made your Project unreadable when moved back and forth.
Use the Disk Utility app to find out the format of your external drive.

  • Unable to move project from external drive back to FCPX.

The HD was recently replaced in my iMac. Fortunately I had backed up my FCPX events and projects to folders on an external drive. I have down loaded FCPX again to the new HD but I'm unable to move my project back into FCPX. Having opened FCPX, I then open the project library, select the external drive, open the folder containing my project but the  "current version fcpproject"  is grey  (not available). I was however able to drag the "fcpevent" file into the event library.
    Any help will be appreciated

Since there is no disclosure triangle on your external showing in your project library, there are two possibilities:
    1) There are no projects presently located on the drive.
    2) Project files are on the drive but FCP can't see them because they are not at the root level of the drive.
So either way, to straighten this out you will have to move some files in the Finder – even though best practices (as both Tom and Luis have pointed out) are to stay within FCP to do that.
Move the existing CurrentVersion file to a temporary folder to hide it from FCP.
Unless you know that the Ball project is at a specific location on your external, do a spotlight search on Final Cut Projects. If something comes up, with FCP closed, navigate to it in the Finder and move it to the root level of the external drive. Then open FCP and it should now be accessible in your project library.  Select it in the library; go to File>Move Project. Things should now work.
But if you don't have another copy on your external, open FCP and hot the plus button at the bottom of project library and create a new project. That will create a Final Cut Projects Folder in your Movies folder (which is where it should be in your home directory). Close FCP. Open the temp file and drag the CurrentVersion file that you hid to the Final Cut Projects folder.
Hopefully, you wil now be able to get back to work.

  • Booting system from an external drive; Folder with Question Mark

Hello all. I am trying to setup an external USB hard drive as a bootable device for my Tiger install. This is on a Core Duo Mac Mini. I have successfully partitioned it using GUID into two partitions; A small 5gb partition for the minimal OSX install, and the remainder for data. I installed OSX onto it via my included Tiger discs that came with the Mini, no problems. However, when I try to boot from it I get a Folder icon with a question mark in the center. I can boot the Mini normally and browse the external partition. It shows no problems. Disk Utility also shows no errors on the drive. What have I missed?
For any who are curious, my goal here is to use NetRestore to make a backup image of my main Mini hard disk. Then by booting to the external USB drive, I will be able to restore the backup image (stored on the data partition of the external drive as well) to the internal Mini hard disk.
Mac Mini Core Dio Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Just letting everyone know that I am still unresolved on this one. I have tried it all; Zero-overwrite erased the external drive before partitioning it, used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the boot disk, you name it. Every situation leads to the same result; no ability to boot from the USB drive, It just acts like it can't read it. Are there "undocumented" problems booting from USB on Intel macs?

  • External Drive/Back-up

I'd like to purchase the LaCie 2big Quadra (2 TB) external drive to use in RAID 1 mode to edit and to use as a back-up for a single project. Here's the link:
    http://www.lacie.com/us/products/product.htm?id=10310
Can anybody please advise about your experience and the reliability of this product on a MacBook Pro and FCP 7? Should I be looking at another brand that's considered more reliable?
I was thinking of the G-RAID mini but it's only up to 1 TB, and I don't need the much more expensive G-SPEED. My project is very long but it's all DV archive video going back decades.

As ssls6 mentioned yes TM will backup the external HD's. That being said you are playing with fire using the same physical HD to backup and also to store media. • External Drive Format / Partition Question

Ok.. had my iMac for almost a week... and loving it. Starting to feel comfortable with it.
I just ordered a LaCie 750G External Drive for Time Machine and some extra storage. My question is this... I will partition the drive for 500G for Time Machine and 250G for extra storage. This looks straight forward enough in the disk utility. I know the Time Machine will show up on my desktop... will the second partition also show up as a Hard Drive on my desktop as well??
Thanks in advance for your help. Also, any suggestions on setting this up any different are welcome.

Thanks George... I appreciate the response. That is what I kind of figured it would do... but since I am new to this I just wanted to verify.
I will use the other (storage partition) and a backup for my current backup. I actually have (2) NAS units that I use for storage but have some critical files that I want to put into a third location.
    Thanks again...

  • Trying to install all my MP3s from new external drive back into iTunes

    Hi,
I'm hoping anyone can help me out here...
I had a major PC upset and have had to rebuild it from scratch (with the help of Dell Tech Support!).
I've now downloaded and installed latest version of iTunes and I'm trying to reload all of my (thankfully) saved MP3s, still in their relevant folders etc, from my external HD back into iTunes.
Despite all attempts, it isn't happening!
Short of having to 'open with' (Tunes) each and every single file, can anyone help with how I can do this?
Thanks in advance for all help offered!

  • External drive set up question

Are FW 800 drives adequate? I have some extra eSATA drives, but the enclosure and the card would be quite a bit more than a couple of 1T FW 800 drives.

It isn't about whether or not a drive connection type will work with FCE or FCP, it's about the video formats you'll be working with since they have varying data rate demands. So, determine which of the many video formats you'll be working with in FCP and then someone will be able to tell you which type of connection (and possibly RAID option) that you'll need to use.

  • AE with 3 external drives: Partition privacy question

I have an AE at work today with two 1Tb drives on it, shared via "disk password". I want to add a third drive, partitioned into 3 partitions (management, internal, and general). I've already partitioned it from my MBPro (Mac OS Extended-Journaled) with GUID Partition Table (I'm pretty sure that's what I needed to do).
When I connect it to the AE, I need to restrict access to the management partition to managers, internal partition to a list of specific users, and then make the remaining partition "open" to anybody who can see the AE (disk password, like the other two whole drives).
I'd do the experimentation myself, but I can't bring it down to play and experiment right now. I can make any changes needed as long as I schedule the outage.
    It it as simple as
    1) changing the AE setting for Disks --> File Sharing setting for "Secure shared disks" from "Use Disk Password" to "With accounts",
    2) Adding all users in my network to the accounts list
    3) Add them appropriately to the two existing drives, and the third 3-partition drive?
    TIA for any insight/tips,
    Steve

  • Cloning an OS to an external drive -  partition order question

    Hi
when you clone your internal OS to an external hd which is for example, has partitions - does it matter which of the three partitons you should clone your OS to (to make it bootable) ? Does it have to be in a particular positioned partition on that disk - eg first or last ?
Also is it okay to clone two bootable OS to that example external HD
for example - one OS being a bootable clone of my current internal and the other OS being a bootable clone of my previous OS (panther)
    thanks for time
    d

it doesn't matter what partition you clone it to-the system will just view it as multiple disks attached to the Mac.
    Good luck!

  • My computer crashed.  I backed up everything on an external drive.  How do I get the backup of itunes and all my music back on my new computer?

My computer crashed.  I had everything backed up on an external drive.  I have a new computer.  How do I get itunes back on my new computere from the external drive?

This question has to do with how to restore your computer drive if you backed up the computer to an external drive. Did you use backup software or did you just copy the data from the old computer to the new computer? If you just copied, then you need to just copy over the Music folder which should contain the iTunes folder.

  • Itunes music on external drive - how to get it back onto mac.

hi - some time ago I transferred my growing itunes library to an external hard drive. The database remained on the mac. My mac was an old powerpc imac. So far no problem. Things moved on and I have just bought a new imac i3 etc. I would now like to transfer my itunes content to the new mac as it has loads of space. Alternatively I would be happy to keep the music on the external drive. I transferred the contents of the old mac to the new mac without any difficulty. The database on itunes arrived seemlessly on the new mac. I plugged in the external hard drive and nothing worked. I had forgotten that the old mac was power pc and the new mac was of course intel.
My question is now, how do I get the library on the external drive back onto my old mac so that I can transfer it to the new mac? Any ideas. I am sure it is simple, but am not the best on computers. I can follow instructions.

    mdockrell wrote:

again, the version shouldn't matter - the worst that could happen is that the newer version would need to update the library (which may take a while).
if you still have access the the PPC, try copying its iTunes folder once more to the intel. you can use a thumb drive or connect the two Macs with a firewire cable, boot the source Mac in _*Target Disk Mode*_, and copy the entire iTunes folder from <MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/music on the source to <MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/music on the target (overwriting the iTunes folder in place there).
connect the external to the intel and wait for it to mount, then launch iTunes.
    what happens ?
