External drive is visible but...

I was fooling around seeing what permissions I had set for my external drive and switched the permissions from my user name (admin with my login name) to system, thinking that when I switch from PPC to Intel the Intel would read my drive. Well, now the drive is mounted, and I can see my folders but no files appear. When I try and change my permissions back I get error code 213.
This happened once before but the drive couldn't be seen on the desktop but was mounted. I remember going into Terminal or having to delete a pref. file?
I'm trying to backup my files onto the drive so when i make the switch I can pull my files off the external to the Intel macbook pro.
Thanks

I'm not sure to exactly understand your message, but I can help you getting good permissions for your whole drive again, using Terminal.
Assuming the user from which you want to use your disk is joe, and is in the administrators group, you can do the following :
sudo chown -R joe.admin /Volumes/myVolume
sudo find /Volumes/myVolume -type d -exec chmod 775 {} \;
sudo find /Volumes/myVolume -type f -exec chmod 664 {} \;
This should set some standard rights to every file in the disk.
If this is a system disk, things are more complicated and I would treat each folder case by case, but repairing permissions with disk utility is a good start.

  • Backing up Events on an external drive... but FCP don't like it ??...

I connected an external drive on my Mac mini for dual purpose of:
    1) backing up Events (captures from DV tape camera), especially that I cannot work will all projects in mind at same time... And capturing a 63 minutes DV tape takes... 63 minutes !!... So don't want to redo it over and over again, should something happen on the working HDD...
    2) Eventually store ''finished projects'' with all their files to free up space on working disk.
However, it looks like FCPX becomes a little mixed up at opening (''cannot open event twice'' kind of message, as it sees it on both drives).  Unfortunately, it will open (for some of the events) the version on the USB2 drive... which is not the one from which I want to create, edit, and finalize, of course.
The only turnaround I found was to disconnect the USB drive before launching FCPX ...
Can't believe there's not a way to set FCP to use from the main HDD in some settings or so ?
(I also read in a tutorial not to copy files other than doing that from ''inside FCP'' - In this case, I recognize I did the backup manually outside of FCP... But yet: this is aimed to be a backup of Events (not yet linked to a project).  I can foresee it could become a nightmare once events will be linked to a project...
What would be the ''best practice'' in what I aim to do (2 objectives above ?)
    Thanks,
    Rob

However, the idea of a backup here is not to ''use'' the backup to edit/finalize, so I don't think USB2 will make any difference (except taking longer to backup/re-import.  I just returned a so-called Thunderbolt LaCie RuggedUSB3 that claimed to do 10GB/s but took over 5 minutes to transfer 12 GB !!... (Tried it at Apple Store and it took 3:06 minutes to transfer 30GB, which in my maths does ... 10GB per minute (I can afford a ''margin'' but... 60 times more sounds to me like ... a **very big** margin. So I did not judge the drive worths $200 to gibe me a TB storage at that speed when I can get a USB drive at a fraction of that price. (Just my statement of the day )
You need to temper your expectations... no drive today can do 10GB/s - and even 10GB a minute may be only theoretical. Plus, remember that many factors may be involved. The bottleneck may be in the processor, the bus and, of course, your internal drive. A Ferrari stalled in rush hour traffic goes as fast as the next car...
A regular hard drive in a USB3 box is mor likely to be limited in throughput by the drive itself, not the connection; but with USB2, it's the other way around: the connection is slower than the drive.

  • Unable to unlock external drive or repair (but can change password)

I have a Freecom 1TB USB 2 external drive with a single partition with Filevault 2 encryption enabled.
The Mac Air detects the drive and prompts for the password to unlock. Prior to this problem it was retrieved automatically from my Keychain (entry still there). An incorrect password immediately gives the window shake. The correct password results in either a prompt to re-enter a password after few minutes or considerably longer.
Disk Utility (run from a standard or admin account or in recovery mode)  appears to Verify and Repair the drive fine, but when the partition is selected I get:
    Verifying volume “1,000”
    Checking storage systemChecking volume.
    disk3: Scan for Volume Headers
Invalid Volume Header @ 0: incorrect block type
Invalid Volume Header @ 999709908480: incorrect block type
disk3 is not a CoreStorage volume
Error: Storage system verify or repair failed.
The Repair option is not available.
Earlier I was getting an "Unable to examine /dev/disk3: Resource busy" message on Verifying the partition.
Earlier I also got a message in the details of drive Verify or Repair in Recovery mode of "transaction group 12: cksum mismatch", though the final result of the Verify and Repair stated the drive was okay.
Oddly I seem to be able to change the password, but nothing else including switching off encryption. When the later is attempted it appears to accept the password but then stops stating there was a problem (no other details).
I have a second external drive with Filevault2 enabled and this connects fine although a password is prompted for even though I saved it to my Keychain previously.
Suggestions very welcome! Preferrably to fix or if that is not possible ways to potentially retrieve some of the data.

I'll answer my own question, which may help others.
I found no solution and reformatted the drive.
Not sure if my question was poorly worded but after no response I tried one of the main paid support sites. The expert who took up my question didn't seem at first to be aware of encrypting external drives under Lion. No viable solution was found, so I gave up and reformatted the drives.
This is the third time I have had issues with the stability of OSX formatted external drives, so enough is enough. I'm sticking with FAT32 (the 4Gb limit isn't a major problem) for all my drives except my Time Machine drive. No encryption on that drive either.

  • External drive not visible on macbook

    Hi all
I am brand new to the mac from windows, so far so good! However I have an external hard drive that I want to plug into my macbook and back up onto. Problem is when I connect it it is not "seen" in the finder window. The drive is presently formatted as NFTS. I want to reformat it for mac but unable in the disk utility option as it can't see it! Covered the basics ie drive works and is powered as checked on the (ex) windows machine, so macbook is powering it but nothing more. I have tried reformatting it under windows, the only choice I have is to NFTS. Am I missing something glaringly obvious here. Am sure this may be the first of many posts.....!!
    Thanks in advance
    Ynot

One basic problem is bus-powered USB drives that require a little more power than the port is capable of delivering.
I have a WD Passport drive that only comes with a single port cable and mounts fine on any machine I've tried it on.
I have a SimpleTech Pininfarina Design USB drive. It powers up fine on a Toshiba Satellite with just one port. On my iBook G4 1.42 and MacBook I need to use both plugs (one is designated as "power only" of a Y-cable plugged straight into both native ports. I tried it with the main one to the MacBook port and secondary one to an unpowered hub (with other components) but it doesn't work that way, or with the single plug. It also has a port for a 5V power supply, but I don't have one that will work.
When it doesn't work, the power light still goes on the drive but doesn't otherwise mount on the desktop or show up in System Profiler. There's enough power for the drive to make a bunch of noises, but that's it.
Some bus-powered drives have an external power supply port, while others will only take more power with one of those Y-cables. Could you tell us what brand and model? I think people can give you suggestions with that as a starting point.

  • GPO Drive mapping - drive not visible but mapped

Did you double check your policy and make sure you selected "Show this drive" for that mapped drive?

HiI've got a weird issue and Internet has yet to give me a solution. So I've created a GPO that maps drives to certain users inOU's.Users that do not yet have a profile ona workstation get the drive mapped as expected. But users that have previously logged on to the workstations do not see the drive.gpupdate /force does not seem to resolve the issue. I ran a gpresult /H result.html and saw that the GPO succeeded in applying the user settings. I checked the drive with "net use" and there I could see that the drive was mapped butjust not visible in Windows. The drive letter I'm using is not used by another device. The reconnect checkbox is ticked in the Drive Maps properties. When I type the drive letter in the addressbar in explorer ( N:\) it works flawlessly so it's not a permission issue. So to summarize: drive is accessible and mapped...

  • External drive on desktop, but not disk utilty??

I just got a new Lacie mini hub to use with my macbook. In looking around as to how to reconnect after I eject it I noticed that it "should" appear in my disk utility. That way I can just hit "mount". Well, it's not there!
Now it does show up find on my desktop just fine.
I have the Lacie connected to my new extreme, not directly to the computer. Surely this isn't the issue??
    Help please!

  • I am trying to export photos and keep receiving an error message. I tried relocating my catalog to see if that would help since I am saving to an external drive, but now I can't find my catalog at all either.

I am trying to export photos and keep receiving an error message. I tried relocating my catalog to see if that would help since I am saving to an external drive, but now I can't find my catalog at all either. I am a newbie at this and don't know what I'm doing wrong or if I can even use an external drive for my photos and catalogs (I did enable smart previews so I do know how to do that part). Help!

You can use an external drive with LR but I recommend only using it for
image file storage while keeping your catalog on your internal HD for
performance. If you moved files outside of LR (Finder or Explorer) you will
have to clue LR in on where they are now. Use the left-hand folder panel in
Library mode to navigate to the location on your external drive and use the
find photo option get LR to reconnect them. If you moved the catalog and
now LR can't find it you should get a window allowing you to select a new
one where you can navigate to the new location and select it. You can also
just start LR by clicking on the Lightroom 5 catalog.lrcat file to open it
    and start LR.

Was able to transfer itunes music from external drive to computer, but they won't play. There are "!" marks next to all transferred songs and a message reads "Unable to locate songs". How do i get the transferred songs to play without having the external drive connected.

Select a single song with a broken link, press CTRL+I to Get Info, cancel when asked to locate the track and take a look at the Summary tab. Post back where iTunes is looking for the file. It begins file://localhost
    Where is it really?
Please post back both paths so that I can make suggestions. Full paths please, exact spellings, you can replace your user name with <User> if needed.

  • Can I back up an external drive and an airbook with a third drive

I would like to back up an external drive and an airbook with a third drive.  This was the setup I used with my Imac.  The third drive was linked to the external drive which was linked to the imac.  I used time machine.  Both the third drive and the external drive were visible on the desktop of the imac.  Now I want to use this system to back up the airbook and the external drive, but the third drive doesn't appear on the airbook's desk top, in fact it is invisible and doesn't seem to be recognized in finder or anywhere else from the airbook.  Is there some distinction that prevents the airbook from allowing this back up configuration, but that allowed the imac to work in this configuration.
    Thanks,
    Daviiiiiiid

Of course, always that the external drive is formatted in “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)”. Apart from that, you shouldn't have any issue,
Then, open System Preferences > Time Machine > Options, and remove the external drive from excluded items. The next backup will include your external drive.
Note that you may not be able to back up the external drive if it's connected to your Time Capsule. If it doesn't work, connect the external drive to your computer

  • Can a Virus cause an external drive to be invisible

    hi folks,
i used my mac book pro to shovel some really, really old files I kept on CDs all the time onto my external western digital "my passport" 2.5" drive. I am using the drive already quite a while but after copying a few CDs I was first unable to eject the CD. Then my system got really slow. I forced to restart the finder application. The system nearly crushed and I had to hard reset my machine.
Once the system had started up again, I could eject the CD but from then on my external drive didn't show anymore on the left hand side of the finder. When I open the disk utility application the external drive is listed. And when I check the file system the following result comes up. (Note: (über)prüfen means to check)
    Volume „My Passport“ überprüfen
    Dateisystem prüfen** /dev/disk1s1
    ** Phase 1 - Preparing FAT
    ** Phase 2 - Checking Directories
** Phase 3 - Checking for Orphan Clusters
    221807 files, 49154784 KiB free (1536087 clusters)
However, the disk utility application is able to find the external disk. Thus, I was wondering if the copied files (mainly mp3's of which I am not totally sure where some of them are from) my contain any virus that I now have put on my mac os x? I have never had these files on my mac before. they are that old, they are still from my time as a windows user, sorry.
hope anyone has an idea what might be going on here. Is there any chance to check my system for viruses or malware os x internally. As far as I have read, anti virus programs of third parties are not really recommendable for mac users...

I'm not really understanding entirely what you saw, but I will tell you that it's not a virus. That's just not how malware works on the Mac.
You say that you saw the external hard drive in Disk Utility and repaired it, but then you said Disk Utility can't find the external drive. Does that mean that it was there, but then disappeared? Or does it mean that you can see the physical drive in Disk Utility, but not the volume?
If the drive itself no longer shows up in Disk Utility, there's probably a hardware problem. There may be a connection problem (loose cable, etc) or the drive itself may have died.
If the drive is visible but the volume is missing, it's probably become extremely badly corrupted. You'll want to repartition (erase) the drive, assuming there's nothing on it that isn't backed up somewhere else, and start over.

  • Connect Linux-based external drive to MBP running Leopard?

I had the misfortune to have two Western Digital NetCenter 500GB external drives have issues in less than 12 months (Tip: don't buy one . The 1st NetCenter's browser-based admin console became unavailable and the drive invisible via Ethernet, but visible via USB. The 2nd NetCenter is not even visible via USB.
The NetCenter drives are formatted with Reiser file system but has firmware included in the enclosure so it can be connected to PCs or Macs via Ethernet or USB.
I removed the drive from the NetCenter enclosure and put it into standard USB enclosure. The drive spins-up and is "found" by my MBP running Leopard but the only option is to reformat the drive. I tried to pull the data off on a borrowed PC. Windows recognizes a USB external drive is connected but the drive not visible in the Disk Manager. I'm 95% certain my data is fine, I just need to find a way to have my MBP recognize the drive.
Anyone have a recommendation on a h/w or s/w configuration in which Leopard will recognize the drive?
    Thanks!
    Bill

I have a Simpleshare NAS Drive by SimpleTech which also uses the Reiser File System (RFS). Unfortunately, there is not much you can do with it. As I understand it, the RFS needs the Linux OS that was built into the drive in order for the Mac to see the data. RFS is not really compatible with the Mac file ssystem and not all Mac files will get copied to the drive anyway.
My suggestion is to put the drive back into the original enclosure and see if you can get it up and running long enough to get you data off of it.

  • Using a seagate external drive with multiple macs

i got a 1TB seagate external hard drive for backup and transfer purposes... it had a little program to help set it up and i set it up for use with mac and pc ( only onther option was stricty this computer.) it works on my computer and a pc but when i tried transfering files from another older mac i have it showed that i could only read on that computer...
how can i get it to work with multiple macs...?

I have the oldest macbook (1.83. 2 gigs ram, 60 gig internal hard drive)
I have all my logic content on my external maxtor firewire 400 drive (usb 2.0 is actually faster than firewire 400) and everything is fine. the good thing is if your external drive has 7200rpm, but the ones with 5600rpm should do as well.
Once you drag your apple loops to logic from your external drive, logic will remember for the next visit. And when you are opening a project which is on the external drive , just find it with logic finder and all should be fine.

  • Should I upgrade the internal hdd on my 2008 8.1 iMac or use an external drive?

I have an external hdd right now it is a 500gb go seagate goflex with a number of iTunes folders that I put on from my windows pc. I just received this 2008 2.4ghz core 2 duo 8.1 iMac and tried to import the files. The internal hdd is only 250gb so they would not fit, when I tried to get iTunes to run from the external drive it would but I would have to manually open each artist then album then song I wanted in the Finder for it to play. The songs do not show up automatically in iTunes, even though I think I followed all of the instructions for external hdd support. I was going to buy a new iMac and have the genius set it up, but now I think I am going to upgrade the RAM myself and am deciding wether or not I should also replace the internal hdd to 2TB or just get an external hdd so when I get a new iMac, maybe next year, I could still use it. However, I don't want to get another, larger external hdd if I'm going to have a hard time transferring all of my media to iTunes. Can I pay to have an apple genius do this at the store? I just upgraded the operating system to Snow Leopard and am waiting to upgrade RAM before moving to Mountain Lion. I just want my iTunes to sync up, at this point I will do just about anything, short of buying a new Mac. Thanks for any help.

You can keep your iTunes collection on an external drive.  You can also keep just bulky items that you may not want to see often such as movies and just keep smaller items on the internal drive.  This split option is more tricky but there are several ways to do it.
If all you have is a modest music collection, you can manage with an internal drive.  Most modern media collections with huge movies files fast outpace even larger internal hard drives and you will have to resort to an external drive.  Your computer dating from 2008 is (according to Apple's coproration standards) on its way to becoming a museum piece (hey, I still use a 10 year old computer, but Apple gave up hope for me years ago).  I would not upgrade the internal drive.   That will cost you a lot  and be tricky to take with you to your next computer. An external drive you can just plug into a new computer.
Some of the issues you are encountering are because you do not yet know how to properly manage and transfer iTunes files.  We can help you, or you can pay somebody a lot of money to do this for you on a regular basis.
Your GoFlex drive was used with Windows. Macs and Windows use different drive formats.  If you are now using Mac-only then you will need to reformat the drive (you will need to store all those files elsewhere while you are doing this).
Do not buy just one external drive.  When that drive fails (oh, and believe me, it will) your whole collection will be lost.  Some of it you may be able to download again from Apple, but Apple does not "store" your iTunes collection, it is up to you to ensure its safety.
