External edits and disk usage

Does external editings result to higher disk usage?
I've a master non-referenced image (6MB) stored in Aperture. Subsequently, I've modified it using an external editor. After each edition, the modification are stored as separate versions under Aperture.
Is it correct that each external edited version is stored in full size (6MB) each? For example, I've made 4 editions, therefore, I would have used 24MB (6MB x 4) of disk space.

When you export an image to an external editor, Aperture gives you a choice of whether to send it as a PSD or Tiff. Tghios choice is made in Preferences. It comes back as a stacked Version, but in reality is atleast the size of your Master. This is something that hopefully Aperture will change in 2.0. You should learn to take full advantage of the modifications you can make in Aperture. Obviously, there are some beyond its capabilities. Hopefully this too will be dealt with to some extent in 2.0.

  • High CPU and Disk usage on HP Envy TS 15 j-155nf after Windows Update

I bought this laptop about a month ago and it worked perfectly fine until the second automatic Windows Update. The booting time got very slow and the entire system started to act laggy. Task Manager showed higher CPU usage than usual and Disk usage was sometimes up to 100% with no apps opened or running in the background. I decided to perform System Recovery using HP Recovery Manager. The laptop worked fine again after that, but then the same thing happened. After the second automatic Windows Update I'm back to a slow and laggy computer. I'm performing System Recovery again, but what can I do to prevent that from happening ?

    Hi,
There are few things you can check:
    i) Check if you have more than one anti-virus installed..Check for Trial versions. If there is any then uninstall it.
(Sometimes it could be that you have an anti-virus and windows defender or security essentials is also installed)
ii) Next try a Clean Boot and check if it makes a difference. If clean boot fixes the issue then it has to be one of the application on the startup which is slowing it down..
How to perform a clean boot
iii) Run HP Support Assitant and check if there are any pending updates..
    Note:
If you have HP Support Assistant installed on the computer(The Blue Question Mark) then open it ==> Complete all pending Updates & Tuneups==> Restart and Check. It may solve your problem
Although I am an HP employee, I am speaking for myself and not for HP.

    Hi,
Disk Usage 100% does not mean disk full but there is task which is doing a lot of i/o during that time (probably swap/page file). If nothing using i/o, the number should be down to 0% as shown:
Now, I start a download, you can see both disk usage and Networks activities:
In your case, the utility may do a lot of i/o to the swap/page file. My suggestion: stop it or BUYING MORE RAM.
    Hope this helps.

  • External editing and saving

For some reason pictures that I have edited in photoshop are no longer being saved to aperture. Before when I finished editing and saved an image it automatically went to the place where it was filed in aperture before I edited it. I am sure I have changed no settings and suddenly it stopped saving properly. I don't know how to get it set up to save the way it used to. Can anybody help? I have a project due and I can't seem to get past this.
    Thank you.

This is probably not going to be any help, but just in case...
Are you at any point in your Photoshop editing work saving the file with a new or revised name -- intentionally or otherwise? And then not saving to a separate Finder file from which you can subsequently import that "new" (from Aperture's perspective) image into your Aperture Library, as either a Managed or Referenced file (depending on your workflow)?
I ask only because I frequently find myself creating a whole new file from versions of images I've sent to my External Editor (i.e. Photoshop) from Aperture -- an example being when I create a Photomerge. But also sometimes I end up wanting to save two different versions of the file while still in Photoshop. For those situations, I've created a folder on my Desktop called PICS TO IMPORT, and it's to that folder that any of those new or "Saved As" PS files get sent. Then, back in Aperture, I import those new PS files, (in my case using the "Move Files" option so they are placed into the correct sub-folders in my MASTER IMAGES folder, which my Aperture Library then references).
The only thing I have to remember (and which I occasionally forget when I'm in a hurry) is to navigate to that "PICS TO IMPORT" folder in Photoshop's Save dialog BEFORE saving the new/revised file for the first time, otherwise it will be saved by Photoshop to the default location, which is deep within that MASTER IMAGES folder (wherever the files reside which Aperture used to create the original Exports for the External Editor). That means when I return to Aperture, I can't see the new PS file, since I still haven't officially imported it yet.
Whereas if I just send a jpg from Aperture to my External Editor, and simply keep saving that new .psd version "as is" in Photoshop (no changes or revisions to the file name), then every time I flip back to Aperture, all my Photoshop revisions (up to my last save in PS) are reflected in the .psd file now residing in a Stack right next to the original jpg which "gave birth" to it.
Again, I've no idea if any of this is even germane to the problem you're having, but I hope maybe it might at least spark an idea.
    Good luck!

  • Bad blocks on an external drive, and disk tools for a MacIntel...

I'm having a problem with my external drive which was pulled from my 12" PBook G4 and put into a USB 2.0 enclosure. When I try to transfer data from my internal HDD it runs for a bit, then, it just stops... no spinning ball and it won't allow me cancel the copy. If I fuss with it long enough (clicking on as many finder features as possible), the Finder will eventually stop responding.
I ran Drive Genius as it was the only software I could find that would work as on my computer. Using the "Scan" function, it came back and told me that I had several bad blocks (I had to stop the scan at 115 because I needed to restart my computer). In the program's help guide, it said that it cannot do anything about the bad blocks, and I may need to reformat.
So, I reformatted using Disk Utility on my system start-up disk (not the disk that came with the compuer), then I tried to zero-out all data. Spinning beach ball and the application stopped responding.
Is it possible to quarantine bad blocks if they can't be reformatted or zeroed out on a MacIntel?
Thank you kindly for any help.

Sorry for the additional posts, I don't know how to edit my last post...
Disk Utility is still at 49 minutes remaining, and it's been almost an hour. Still letting it run, and hoping for the best.

  • External drives and disk space for iPhoto, iTunes...

I'm ill and cannot spend much time sitting at a desk, so I have to a MacBook (aka, when real sick, I can work in a layZboy or in bed).
So now I have the 17" MBP with 500G, and should upgrade the GHz to 8 as soon as prices drop.
    Here WAS my plan:
I'd put my iPhoto library on an external hard drive (EHD), because I already have about 30.000 pictures, most in RAW format, and they take a LOT of space... (semi-pro photographer) Yup, you read right. iPhoto, not Aperture. Switched to Snow Leopard and my Aperture isn't up to date anymore, don't have the money for Aperture2 and realized I prefer how iPhoto works for organizing... Except there is no referencing... And I also want to finally have all my pics together. Pics I had put on DVDs, finally scan old pics... But I won't have enough space!
So I wanted to use an EHD to put my iPhoto library...
And of course, make a backup of that EHD with another one, which I wouldn't keep in the house, in case of a fire or theft.
But I realized I have a HUGE problem!
    My computer is a laptop!
I don't use it in one place alone!
So I can't realistically have an EHD plugged in all the time (especially since they need power!)
I have Airport. It's how I do my TimeMachine backups. Works well. Maybe a little slower, but I don't have any cables!
But would it be possible to use EHD and iPhoto the same way?
    I'm not so sure...
I will need to work off the EHD regularly... opening RAW pics, editing them in Photoshop...
Any ideas? Should I buy my EHD?
I don't want to change my computer again... and I can't, realistically.
Physically, I don't have a choice. It's a laptop or no computer work.
When I shopped it was the biggest drive possible in a laptop.
    Please help...

Your need for a portable computer forces you to make some compromises — no way around that.
Western Digital has announced the impending availability of a 1TB 2.5" notebook hard drive, and its 640GB and 750GB offerings are currently available:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136459
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136414
The 640GB drive is 9.5mm high and will fit into all MBPs. The 750GB drive is 12.5mm high and has been reported to fit into a Late '08 15" unibody MBP, despite not meeting the 9.5mm maximum height spec for that model. The much-anticipated 1TB drive, not available yet, is also expected to be 12.5mm high.
Any of these drives could be used externally if mounted in a suitable enclosure. Note that many enclosures for 2.5" drives will not accommodate a 12.5mm high drive; one must be careful to buy an enclosure that will. I would not under any circumstances buy a WD hard drive in a WD external enclosure. There have been more reports of trouble with WD prepackaged external drives in these forums than with all other external drive brands combined. WD's drives themselves are fine; WD's enclosures seem fraught with multiple problems. If you want to use one of these drives in an external enclosure, I recommend buying the drive and enclosure separately and putting them together yourself. I can highly recommend OWC's portable drive enclosures, but I don't know whether or not any of them will accommodate a 12.5mm drive. Call them and ask:
http://eshop.macsales.com (phone number is at top of web page)
3.5" desktop external drives are available in larger capacities at lower prices than notebook drives, but of course they're larger, heavier and less portable, always requiring an external AC power supply. If you need a capacity of more than 750GB right now, these are the only option available to you.

  • Big flaw in Leopard regarding External Drives and DISK UTILITY

My macbook pro with Leopard 10.5.3. is not recognizing my drives and does not let me use or move files into them. File corruption in drives. Does not mount or unmount.
THe disk utility cannot repair these problems.
Now I'm at the 3rd drive getting corrupt in the last week.
Is Apple coming out with an update to resolve these issues?
In the meanwhile I saw this page on the Seagate web sites.
    https://seagate.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/seagate.cfg/php/enduser/popupadp.php?p_sid=dLEqXr6j&p_lva=&p_li=&p_faqid=5005&p_created=1195077097&psp=
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks,

You can get dozens of "not me" or "yes" opinions, but you might want to look at reader feedback reports first on MacFixit (subscription required after 3 days) or MacIntouch, or handy olde Google.
There have been problems with external drives mounting, not unmounting, a known issue during shutdown, that seems to affect a number of drive cases.
Note: it helps to narrow down and ask/focus on what you are using, I assume by your link, that you are asking about a Seagate case, so issues with LaCie, Maxtor, Initio may or may not apply.
By 3rd drive, I assume same case? rather than disk drive, or same make model in each case?
For the record, years of using Oxford based and no issues, I avoid all the name brand cases in favor of the 'build it yourself' or OWC FireWire/USB Mercury (not that there aren't a few reports of problems, but I think much less).
Also, check www.xlr8yourmac.com for its "Drive Upgrade Database" reports, too.

  • Problem with External HDD and Disk Utility

I'm having issues with my external hdd, I keep all of my media on it, and randomly it is no longer readable, and doesn't show up on the desktop, it only gives me the options to initialize, ignore or eject, when I try to initialize it and run first aid, all of the options are greyed-out and I cannot click on them. The only option in Disk Utility that I can do is erase. Is there anyway to fix the hdd so I can continue to read and write to the device, I really don't want to lose over 600 gigs of photo's, videos and music.

Since it sounds like the disk is on the way out, I would suggest that you back it up preferably twice.
Once you have your data backed up then and only then you can start troubleshooting the problem.
What model Mac do you have?
How is the disk connect to your Mac?
Does the disk have another type of connector?

  • Problem with external harddrive and disk utility

I have just about ran out of room on my iMac G3 so I went to walmart and bought a FreeAgent 320 GB external hard drive. On the bottom it says its compatible with my iMac G3 you just have to format it using disk utility.
So I open up disk utility and I see my hard drive. I click on it and then go to erase so I can format it to work on my mac. However everything on the erase page of disk utility is greyed out and and I can't click on anything.
    What do I do? Thanks.

I recall that the old imacs could not use a HD over 130G or so unless they are partitioned. So you may need to make three partitions first with your disk utilities. It should format it at the same time.

  • Major Lion Flaw: Uncontrollable Logging and Disk Usage

Okay, after reading a few users' problems I double checked myself just in case. I opened up the console app, and there were hundreds, if not thousands of logs just in the past 2 hours. And when I say 'get info' on Macintosh HD the used disk space is increasing every 5 to 10 seconds. This is the only concerning bug/glitch of noticed in Lion since upgrading. Everything else seems to work (almost) perfectly. However, until this major flaw is fixed, I'm planning on using Snow Leopard. Question is: how do I do that? How do I clear my Macintosh HD completely, and install Snow Leopard, with a clean drive? Thanks.

I think, maybe, this is Snapshots using available disk space. It will equally make space if needed. The information the user gets is still a problem. I have submitted a Bug Report.
Is that only applicable to laptops and can it be turned off on Time Machine?

    Thanks.

Scott has been posting this link recently (not used it myself):http://www.ecamm.com/mac/iphonedrive/
Can't see why anyone would want it though. 4GB SD cards and a USB reader are about £15 now. Just use one of those for files and keep your precious +iPod touch+ space for media content.

  • "Other" category and Disk Usage

Hi, could someone please tell me if the "Other" category (in About my Mac) is too large, or if this is normal.
It would also be great if someone could explain what is making up these 17GB.... it seems too large. There is nothing in the Trash, nor in the iPhoto trash.
I have re-indexed my HDD/SSD, just before I took the screenshot, as has been suggested in these forums.
The Pictures folder (21 GB) is quite close to the combination of Photos and Movies indicated in "About my Mac" (17GB and 5.7GB), so this seems ok.
iTunes music section shows 10.6GB compared to 12GB in the Music folder and 13GB in "About my Mac." I don't believe this is due to files being deleted from iTunes, but being kept, as I always select the "Move to Trash" option. My iTunes library contains no apps, TV shows, iTunes U or Movies. I have only 1 iPhone back up - I back this up to iCloud.
Time Machine back-ups I do manually (Time Machine = Off), so there should not be any temporary back-ups on the HDD/SSD.
Adding up what is shown in Finder does not match the 'Overall space' (95GB) shown in "About this Mac → Storage."
    Why is this?
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
Some other possibly handy background info:
    No data was transferred using Migration Assistant;
The MacBook came with OS X Mavericks (I think 10.9.3)

  • Problem with External HD and Disk Utility

Hi. I'm using OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 on a 15 inch MBP Retina. I've been using my 2TB WD My Passport Ultra hard drive since around February of this year. Earlier today when I plugged it in, the hard drive didn't show up in my devices in finder. So, i unplugged and tried again. Still nothing. Then, I went to Disk Utility and found that the drive was there but the partition wasn't mounted and is greyed out. So i tried to verify / repair the disk but have gotten a couple different messages. One being "The partition map needs to be repaired because there's a problem with the EFI system partition's file system. The other being "Some information was unavailable during an internal lookup". This message has showed up more than any other. I've been able to get in and look at my files once to try to copy the files from the drive after a message popped up and said it "couldn't repair the disk" but i "could still open or copy files on the disk but can't save changes to files on the disk." But I encountered an error that was something along the lines of "Operation couldn't be completed because the item "..." is in use". But the file i was trying to copy wasn't open or in use by any program. SO, I'm in pretty desperate need of some help with this. I have some very important files on this drive that I can't afford to lose. A lot of it irreplaceable. Any help at all would be very much appreciated! Thanks a lot!

I recall that the old imacs could not use a HD over 130G or so unless they are partitioned. So you may need to make three partitions first with your disk utilities. It should format it at the same time.

  • Issue with Messages App and disk usage

    Hi there,
Has everyone ever experienced this weird bug?
Everytime I launch Messages App, my available disk space goes down almost by 15 Gb, making my hard drive instantly full, and my computer unusable.
The only solution I found is to force quit Messages App, and never use it again
I have a MacBook Retina, that I bought a month ago.
It's been working super fine since I got it, apart from that stupid bug that appeared two days ago.

    HI,
    Never heard of this one.
    (Never seen it myself)
I would start with a PRAM reset
    Shut down the computer.
Restart it holding down Apple/CMD ( or ⌘)+ALT( ⌥)+P+R Keys until you have heard three Start Up Bongs.
DO you have notion of how many Conversations Messages may be trying to show in the left hand column of the Message window ?
(Saves Messages and the iMessages database are already held on the computer so I don't really see this as the issue)
