Problem with External HD and Disk Utility

Hi. I'm using OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 on a 15 inch MBP Retina. I've been using my 2TB WD My Passport Ultra hard drive since around February of this year. Earlier today when I plugged it in, the hard drive didn't show up in my devices in finder. So, i unplugged and tried again. Still nothing. Then, I went to Disk Utility and found that the drive was there but the partition wasn't mounted and is greyed out. So i tried to verify / repair the disk but have gotten a couple different messages. One being "The partition map needs to be repaired because there's a problem with the EFI system partition's file system. The other being "Some information was unavailable during an internal lookup". This message has showed up more than any other. I've been able to get in and look at my files once to try to copy the files from the drive after a message popped up and said it "couldn't repair the disk" but i "could still open or copy files on the disk but can't save changes to files on the disk." But I encountered an error that was something along the lines of "Operation couldn't be completed because the item "..." is in use". But the file i was trying to copy wasn't open or in use by any program. SO, I'm in pretty desperate need of some help with this. I have some very important files on this drive that I can't afford to lose. A lot of it irreplaceable. Any help at all would be very much appreciated! Thanks a lot!

I recall that the old imacs could not use a HD over 130G or so unless they are partitioned. So you may need to make three partitions first with your disk utilities. It should format it at the same time.

  • Problem with External HDD and Disk Utility

    I'm having issues with my external hdd, I keep all of my media on it, and randomly it is no longer readable, and doesn't show up on the desktop, it only gives me the options to initialize, ignore or eject, when I try to initialize it and run first aid, all of the options are greyed-out and I cannot click on them. The only option in Disk Utility that I can do is erase. Is there anyway to fix the hdd so I can continue to read and write to the device, I really don't want to lose over 600 gigs of photo's, videos and music.

    Since it sounds like the disk is on the way out, I would suggest that you back it up preferably twice.
    Once you have your data backed up then and only then you can start troubleshooting the problem.
    What model Mac do you have?
    How is the disk connect to your Mac?
    Does the disk have another type of connector?

  • Problem with external harddrive and disk utility

    I have just about ran out of room on my iMac G3 so I went to walmart and bought a FreeAgent 320 GB external hard drive. On the bottom it says its compatible with my iMac G3 you just have to format it using disk utility.
    So I open up disk utility and I see my hard drive. I click on it and then go to erase so I can format it to work on my mac. However everything on the erase page of disk utility is greyed out and and I can't click on anything.
    What do I do? Thanks.

  • Big flaw in Leopard regarding External Drives and DISK UTILITY

    My macbook pro with Leopard 10.5.3. is not recognizing my drives and does not let me use or move files into them. File corruption in drives. Does not mount or unmount.
    THe disk utility cannot repair these problems.
    Now I'm at the 3rd drive getting corrupt in the last week.
    Is Apple coming out with an update to resolve these issues?

    You can get dozens of "not me" or "yes" opinions, but you might want to look at reader feedback reports first on MacFixit (subscription required after 3 days) or MacIntouch, or handy olde Google.
    There have been problems with external drives mounting, not unmounting, a known issue during shutdown, that seems to affect a number of drive cases.
    Note: it helps to narrow down and ask/focus on what you are using, I assume by your link, that you are asking about a Seagate case, so issues with LaCie, Maxtor, Initio may or may not apply.
    By 3rd drive, I assume same case? rather than disk drive, or same make model in each case?
    For the record, years of using Oxford based and no issues, I avoid all the name brand cases in favor of the 'build it yourself' or OWC FireWire/USB Mercury (not that there aren't a few reports of problems, but I think much less).
    Also, check www.xlr8yourmac.com for its "Drive Upgrade Database" reports, too.

  • Problems verifying external HDD in Disk Utility

    I initially had a problem with iPhoto suddenly unable to open due to problems with permissions. The original thread can be found here.
    After several posters helping me isolate my problem, it seems that my new 4TB Seagate external HDD is not playing nice (cannot create a new iPhoto Library on the external HDD, but I am able to create a new iPhoto Library in my Pictures folder).
    Thus I was asked to "Verify" my external HDD via Disk Utility. I managed to, but apparently it was pointed out that it was missing the verification process usually appears in green: "The volume *** appears to be ok."
    What could be the problem with my external HDD that is playing havoc with my iPhoto Library?
    As you can see that the external HDD have been properly formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) in 8 February 2015. It has been working fine as my iPhoto Library destination until recently.
    SPECS
    Mac Mini (Mid 2011)

    Wait, scratch that, it suddenly started working again.
    For some reason, I had to partition it, with one partition a Mac OS partition and the other an MS-DOS FAT... hey ho, no idea.

  • Problems running Software Update and Disk Utility

    I had automatic updating turned on in the Software Updates control panel, so I believe the system tried to apply the 10.4.6 automatically and somehow failed.
    Ever since, when I try to run Software Update it hangs while trying to connect to the internet to get the list of available updates. I tried downloading the installer directly from Apple, but when I try to select a volume on which to install the update, it doesn't list my hard drive.
    Finally, when trying to run the Disk Utility, I get an error about how the Disk Utility cannot be started because a background process is not running. I have to Force Quit to exit out of the Utility.
    I was able to boot off the Mac OS X 10.4 installation DVD at which point I repaired the permissions and repaired the disk. However, upon restart the same problems remain.
    I've seen several other people post about this issue; has anyone found a resolution OTHER than doing an Archive and Install (which I don't want to do if I don't have to?)
    Thanks so much for help that anyone can provide!
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Create a new admin account with Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Accounts and see if the issue duplicates itself logging into that account. That will say if the issue systemwide, or just localized to the a bad user cache file. If the issue persists in the new user, you can try looking in the System -> Library and Library -> Cache, Applications Support, and ByHost folders for cache files relating to Software Update and Disk Utility. Once you find them, carefully extract them to comparable folders on your desktop you create (i.e. name one systemlibrarycache) so you know where you go them from, and restart your Mac. If the issues go away after two restarts then it is just one set of bad cache files. If the issues return after two restarts, you have something generating bad cache files which needs a more system wide repair tool.

    Exactly which model Mac G5 is it?
    What size is the Hard Drive, and how much space is available?
    How much RAM is installed, and is it original or added?
    What peripherals do you have connected? A keyboard, mouse, printer, external drive or modem, router, etc?
    What happened between the last time the Mac functioned successfully, and when it didn't?
    Have you made any changes, like upgrading the system, updated or installed any applications or programs, etc?
    Have there been any unusual occurences, like freezes, crashes, power outages, etc?
    See if you are able to perform the procedures posted below, and post the results.
    THESE ARE THE STEPS FOR USING DISK UTILITY TO REPAIR YOUR HD
    1.Insert the System Install disk, Mac OS X CD-ROM disk, or Restore DVD disk, then restart the computer while holding the C key. Use the System disk, of the OS, that is currently installed.
    2.Once started up from CD or DVD, on the Menubar at the top of the screen, choose Disk Utility from the Installer contextual menu for Panther, or Utilities for Tiger.
    Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from disc to access Disk Utility.
    3.Click the First Aid tab.
    4.Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5.Select your Mac OS X volume, if necessary.
    6.Click Repair. If DU reports errors it has fixed, re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported.
    7.Repeat steps 5 & 6, but select the Hard Drive this time. It's usually the first listed with the manufacturer's model number. Make note of the S.M.A.R.T. status.
    8.When finished, select Quit Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
    9.Select Quit Installer from the Installer menu.
    10.In the resulting pop-up window, choose restart.
    11.After the computer has restarted, you can eject the CD.
    TO REPAIR PERMISSIONS ON THE STARTUP DISK
    1.Open Disk Utility, located in Applications/Utilities, and select the startup disk in the left column.
    2.Click First Aid.
    3.Click Verify Disk Permissions to test permissions or Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions. (I never "Verify". Just run "Repair".)
    When "Repair Permissions" is complete. Quit "Disk Utility".

  • Grey folder with question mark and Disk Utility can't find HDD.

    I have a 2010 MacBook Pro and for some reason the OS X does not boot up. Therefore I see the grey folder flashing. I tried booting into Recovery from holding options button but there are no available startup disks. So I installed Apple recovery on my USB and I boot up with that. I opened disk utility but it does not seem to find the hard disk. I also tried reinstalling Mac OS X and it gives me an error. Is there another bootable software except for Disk Utility that can check the HDD and see if there are any errors or is the HDD just dead?

    Try the steps in this support article:

    Have you tried installing the original Snow Leopard installation disk and access Disk Utility from the Utilities menu?

  • Strange new problem with external effects and latency compensation

    i'm currently facing a new , very strange problem with latency compensation for external effect devices. it alway worked fine for me but suddenly there are strange things going on. i'm suddenly running into problems when using sends which feed auxes going to external effect devices.
    latency compensation is set to ALL !!!
    easy setup :
    - open an empty project and create 2 audioinstrument tracks. on the first one load the exs with a drumkit and record f.e. a bassdrum pattern. leave the 2. instrument empty.
    - now on the first audio instrument create a send to bus 1 -> aux 1 and insert the i/o plug-in in the aux and route it to your external effect device. chose a temposynced delay.
    - press play = everything is fine when audioinstrument 1 is highlighted in the arrange.
    - press stop, click on the track with the 2. audioinstrument and press play = totaly weird timing problems. delay is only in sync when track 1 is highlighted.
    - create a send in the 2. audioinstrument and route it to bus 1 -> aux 1 too = still the same problem
    now insert ANY softwareinstrument in audioobject 2 and suddenly the timing for the delay is right.
    go ahead and create a 3. audioinstrument track but leave it empty first. chose it in the arrange = again weird timing problems with the external delay.
    insert any software instrument on audioinstrument 3 = still the same problem
    now create the send to bus 1 -> aux 1 in audioinstrument 3 and guess what, timing is right.
    *** is going on here ? can anyone reproduce that ?
    it works fine when using sends which feed auxes with software effects inserted.
    funny thing is, when i go to the environment and change aux object one to bus object 1 and insert the same i/o in it it works !!!
    very very strange, please tell me i'm not crasy and this is a bug !!!
    as said, latency compensation is set to all.
    i'm using the mac pro 3.2 8-core running os 10.5.4, logic 8.0.2 and a motu pci-e audio system.

    Welcome to the Discussions.
    If you need it formatted FAT32, reformat it on your Mac. Use MS-DOS (FAT32) as the file system. If you don't need it for both PC and Mac, format it HFS+ and you'll be able to use the Retrospect Express software that came with it on your Mac.

  • Performance problems with external sounds and Sound class

    I'm using Sound & SoundChannel classes to load and play external MP3s and I'm seeing terrible playback performance on my 3G phone. Audio starts out ok, but will gradually get more and more choppy and eventually crashes the app. The MP3s themselves are typical sizes, 2 - 6 MB and of various types (VBR, CBR).
    On top of that, when the phone gets locked (with the app still running), the audio sputters and stops completely. When I unlock, it begins where it left off. Anyone else seeing this?
    My code is pretty standard:
    private var soundPlayer:Sound;
    private var soundChannel:SoundChannel;
    public function load(url:String, playNow:Boolean = true):void {
      if (soundChannel) {
        soundChannel.stop();
      soundPlayer = new Sound();
      soundPlayer.addEventListener(IOErrorEvent.IO_ERROR, onIOError);
      soundPlayer.addEventListener(ProgressEvent.PROGRESS, onProgress);
      soundPlayer.addEventListener(Event.ID3, onID3);
      trace('Loading new stream: '+url);
      var request:URLRequest = new URLRequest(url);
      soundPlayer.load(request);
      if (playNow) {
        this.isPlaying = true;
        soundChannel = soundPlayer.play();
        soundChannel.addEventListener(Event.SOUND_COMPLETE, onSoundComplete);

    this is from another forum (http://discussions.info.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2542931&tstart=0&messageID=12106188 ):
    "I've spoken to the developers of of couple of these apps, and they've all said it's a memory fragmentation/low memory condition.
    Restart the phone. Don't just turn it off and on, but restart it.
    Hold the on/off button and the home button down like you were going to turn it off. When you see the swipe to turn off message, keep holding the buttons down.
    In a few seconds the screen will flash, and then go dark.
    Now it's really off.
    Turn it back on (restarting it). All should be well.
    The iPhone is really a computer. Performing a restart like this every  once in a while (weekly, bi-weekly) is a good idea, esp if you use  memory intensive apps."

    I have a maxtor onetouch 200gb. I just bought an ibook G4, and when I connect my hard drive I recieve a message saying the device is not readable by this computer. • Blinking folder with question mark, and disk utility doesnt recognise hard drive, please help!!!

    So today i was using my macbook pro and for some reason my CD/DVD drive was causing noise when i put a DVD inside it, and for some reason it did not recognise my DVD. I force ejected it using the restart and clicking, but after that my computer showed a blinking folder and question mark during start up. I restarted my computer to Recovery HD, but instead it took me to internet Recovery HD (i have mountain lion), and so i went to disk utility to repair my disk, but in the left it did not recognise my hard drive. Please help! Im not that experienced in computing!

    Sounds like some sort of power issue and now your drive is not working.
    You'll have to take this to Apple for repair.
    You should read this if you don't have recent backups of your data off the machine.
    My computer is not working, is my personal data lost?

  • EDSPermissionError(-14120) problems with LDAP, SSL and Directory Utility

    Hello everyone,
    Apologies for the repost but I think I may have made a mistake by posting this originally in the Installation, Setup and Migration forum instead of the Open Directory forum. At least I think that may be why I didn't receive any responses.
    Anyway, I've been trying to get my head around Open Directory and SSL as they are implemented in Mac OS X Server 10.5 Leopard, and have been having a few issues. I would like to set up a secure internal infrastructure based around a local Certificate Authority that signs certificates for other internal services like LDAP, email, websites, etc.
    I only have one Mac OS X Server and it is kind of a small office so I have gone against best practice and simply made it a CA (through Keychain Utility). I then generated a self-signed SSL certificate through Server Admin, and used the "Generate CSR" option to create a Certificate Signing Request. This went fine, but I did have some problems signing it with the CA, because the server documentation suggested that once I signed it it would pop open a Mail message containing the ASCII version of the signed certificate - it did not, and it took me a loooong time to realize that I could simply export the copy of the signed certificate it put in my local Keychain on the server as a PEM file and paste this back into the "Add Signed or Renewed Certificate from Certificate Authority" dialog box in Server Admin. Hopefully this can be fixed in a forthcoming patch, but I thought I would mention it here in case anyone else is stuck on this issue.
    Once I did this I was able to use this certificate in the web server on the same machine and sure enough I was able to connect to it with with clients who had installed the CA certificate in their system Keychains without getting any error messages - very cool.
    However, I haven't had quite as much luck getting it going with LDAP/Open Directory. I installed the certificate there as well, but have run into a number of problems. At first I could not get clients (also running 10.5.2) to talk to the server at all over SSL, receiving an error in Directory Utility that the server did not support SSL. I eventually discovered that the problem seemed to lie in the fact that the OpenLDAP implementation on Leopard is not tied in with the system Keychain, necessitating some command-line voodoo to install a copy of the CA cert in a local directory and point /etc/openldap/ldap.conf at it, as documented here: http://www.afp548.com/article.php?story=20071203011158936
    This allowed me to do an ldapsearch command over SSL, and seemingly turn SSL on on clients that were previously bound to the directory, and additionally allowed me to run Directory Utility on new clients and put in the server name with the SSL box checked and begin to go through the process of binding. Once this seemed to work, I turned off all plaintext LDAP communication and locked down the service by checking the "Enable authenticated directory binding," "Require authenticated binding," "Disable clear text passwords," and "Encrypt all packets" options in Server Admin. However, I am now running into a new problem, specifically that I cannot successfully bind a local account to a directory account over SSL.
    Here's what happens:
    1) I run Directory Utility, (or it auto-runs) and add a server, typing in the DNS name and clicking the SSL box.
    2) I get asked to authenticate, and type in user credentials, including computer name (incidentally, should this be a FQDN or just a hostname?)
    3) Provided I put admin credentials in here and not user-level credentials, I get taken to the "Do you want to set up Mail, VPN, etc.?" box that normally appears when you autodiscover or connect to an Open Directory server.
    4) I click through, and am asked for a username and password on the server, as well as the password for my local account.
    5) When I put this information in, I get a popup with the dreaded "eDSPermissionError(-14120)" and it fails.
    Checking the logs in Server Admin reveals nothing special, and while I have seen a couple other threads on this error and various other binding problems:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5967023
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5982070
    these have not solved the problem. In the Open Directory user name field I am putting the short username. I have tried putting [email protected] and the user's longname but this fails by saying the account does not exist. For some reason it does seem to work if I bind it to the initial admin account I created, but no other user accounts.
    If I turn all the encryption stuff off I am able to join just fine, so I am suspecting that the error may lie in some other "under the hood" piece of software that doesn't get the CA trust settings from the Keychain or the ldap.conf file, but I'm stymied as to which piece of software this might be. Does anyone have any clues on what I might be able to do here?
    Thanks,
    Andrew

    Hard to tell what is happening without looking at the application
    source, knowing what OS & hardware you're using etc. You might want to
    try running with different JVM versions to see if it's actually the VM
    that is the problem. If you have a support contract with BEA you could
    ask support to help you diagnose this.

  • Problem with external libraries and Web DynPro

    Hello,
    we're stuck here.
    We're trying for a week now to include external libraries(e.g. Hibernate) into our Web DynPro Project, without success so far.
    We read every single forum and blog entry we could find on this topic.
    E.g.: /people/valery.silaev/blog/2005/09/14/a-bit-of-impractical-scripting-for-web-dynpro
    We're running Netweaver 2004s SP9 Trial Version.
    The biggest problem is, that when we deploy an J2EE Server Component Library DC exactly like described in the blog entry above, although it is deployed correctly an lists under Server->Libraries in Visual Administrator, the external hibernate.jar doesn't get deployed onto the server. It's just an empty container named hib/lib without any entries in "Jars Contained". The sda file of the library DC also has only 2K and doesn't include the hibernate.jar which we added as used dc...
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Or is there a simpler way to include external jars into Web DynPro Projects and deploy them to the server? (We already tried putting them into the lib folder without luck, we always get "NoClassDefFound...")

    Hallo Christian,
    this is a bug which should be fixed in NW 7.0 SP9 patch1: [Look at this forum thread on the same issue: External Library DC in NW2004s SP09|External Library DC in NW2004s SP09].
