External USB Devices Suddenly Don't Work

I have been using my digital camera with my Mac Mini for a couple of years now with no problem. I just plug it in, and IPhoto automatically turns out and I can load my photos. But now, when I plug in my camera, nothing happens. I've tried all the USB ports. My card reader also is suddenly not showing up on the desktop when I plug it in, even though the light turns on so I know it's getting power. Can anyone help? thanks

Unlike the other poster's issue which appears to be more likely external to the Mac, your problem sounds like it's the Mac itself, since the USB ports appear not to be functional at all.
In this situation, and since the age of the mini means it would be a G4 model, try a PMU reset as per the article at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300574

  • External display monitor suddenly is not working; power is on

    Hello,
My LG external monitor display suddenly is not working today. It powers on, and it says "analog power saving mode", and it is detected by my ibook G4. When I go to preferences, and show displays, it shows that two displays are active, my laptop "Color LCD" and my external, "L1932Tq". If the external is plugged in, it indicates that that is the system in use, though the external monitor is black and unresponding (except for power light which is on). I replaced all cords - the power cord and the mini VGA cord and it's connecting cord to the monitor, and there are no changes.
Is this monitor just suddenly broken, perhaps through it's internal connection devices??
    Thanks!!

  • NFS export external USB device fails

I am trying to NFS export a FAT32 formatted external USB device, which fails with the error:
    /sbin/nfsd: Can't export /Volumes/<external>: Operation not supported (45)
I am able to export internal/HFS drives, which have the "Owners Enabled: Yes" attribute, and therefore assume I need to set the flag accordingly on my external drive.
Despite the fact that the device has been assigned a uuid (it appears to be in place in .fseventsd and running 'repair disk' echos it in syslog), I get this error when running vsdbutil:
vsdbutil: Couldn't update volume information for '/Volumes/<external>/': Invalid argument
vsdbutil: no valid volume UUID found on '/Volumes/<external>/': Invalid argument
    And diskutil returns this:
Permissions are not enabled on the disk (-9973)
I attempted to add the uuid to /var/db/volinfo.database in order to set the permissions there, to no effect.
I don't believe that I am the only person who has attempted this, but I can find no evidence to the contrary. Thank you.

NFS exporting requires specific NFS serving support from the file system.
Unfortunately, the "msdos" file system implementation doesn't currently
    support NFS exporting.
If you'd like that support added, I would strongly encourage filing a

  • USB devices and Webcam not working or installing on Pavilion Laptop

    Hi there,
    I have a HP Pavilion Dm3 1030 sa,
For a while now certain USB devices have just not worked on the laptop, specifically printers and mice, despite me reinstalling the drivers for those devices on the laptop. I tried the devices on other computers and they worked fine.
This was annoying but I put up with it.
Now the webcam and microphone have stopped working and are no longer recognised by the computer. I have reinstalled the webcam software but cannot find the drivers for it. The software (arc soft webcam) says the inbuilt webcam is not connected.
I have been able to get my iphone to connect via usb and usb drives work most of the time. I don't really know what is going on. When I look at devices that don't work in device manager It says that there is a USB I/O error. I have tried reinstalling the drivers using device manager but that didn't work either. Any advice would be appreciated. Not being able to use a mouse is annoying as track pads are slow.

  • MBP Does Not Recognize External USB Devices

MBP does not "see" external USB devices (such as Garmin Nuvi GPS) or any thumb drive. No external USB devices show up in Finder nor does Disk Utility see them. No cable issues. Have tried restarting several times, but to no avail. This MBP used to recognize these USB devices, but no longer do so.
I have seen this question posed several times in forum, but no suitable answer. Don't know if it is H/W or S/W problem.

    Hi Terry Temple
Is there at least any power going to the USB ports? ( as in if for example you plug in a USB light, will it switch on? )
If there is power in the USB ports it might be a software problem.
Try resetting the SMC see link: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411
also try re-set the PRAM see link: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
However if you do not have any power at all it probably is a hardware problem.
    Is it still under warranty?

  • Usb composite device is an older usb device and might not work in USB 3

I recently bought one Lenovo Yoga 2 11 laptop running Windows 8.1 (64 bit).
When I try to connect my old Brother MFC-3240C printer using USB (2.0), it doesn’t work.
    Below are the steps performed:
Connected the printer to USB 2.0 port on laptop (on the right side). Automatically installed the printer driver (no exclamation mark beside printer icon)
When the printer didn’t print, I tried to use troubleshoot as below:
Control Panel->Hardware and Sound->Devices and Printers->Right Click on Printer Icon->Troubleshoot.
It came up with USB composite device is an older usb device and might not work in USB 3.0
Removed the printer and re-installed the driver. It is all the same.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
FYI – the same printer works fine with my older laptops running Windows 7.

Already checked Brothers website for the printer drivre for Windows 8.1 (64 bit).
It says ... The built-in driver is already included with Windows® Operating System or is available through Windows® update.
So, installed the default driver for the printer that is available with Windows 8.1.
Even connected the printer with USB 3.0 port on the laptop, but it is all the same.

USB drive with install image is showing in Startup Manager on a Mac Pro, but wont boot. Showing circle with cross strip, and shut down automatically. USB device are made and work on two different MacBook Pro, but used on Mac Pro. Any help?

OS X installers have always been fairly specific, hardware-wise. I haven't read anything reflecting that situation with the Recovery HD, so it may be that the Recovery HD created for the MacBook Pro does not have the necessary drivers for the Mac Pro. Obviously, nothing definitive here, but a possibility.

  • Cant mount external USB Device?

After Os X Lion installation on MacBook Pro, external devices dont mount?

What kind of external USB device are you having a problem with?

  • For issues of Ipods that suddenly don't work

I have a couple of thoughts based upon 10 years of dealing with applications, operating systems, and peripheral devices:
With a PC, the most critical components to having everything talk nice and get along with Windows are the registry and your drivers. If suddenly something stops working that worked the day before...
did you install anything that might have affected things? If so, then a clean uninstall/reinstall of the apple software might work. Usually I see people trying to update the ipod or restore it-- but if the ipod is working on it's own outside of the PC then there is nothing wrong with it and the problem is a driver/registry/communication or software issue on the PC.
have you ever checked your registry for bad bytes? I know this sounds simple, and I have nothing to do with this company, but most PC users have a registry that is like spaghetti. Not good. Bad registry entries can have far-reaching effects on your PC. registryfix.com has a good program (not free but not expensive).
Regarding USB2.0 connections, I see many people using hubs. Generally speaking, even with USB2.0, it is best to use a direct connection and avoid going through a hub (even if it is powered) for any data-intensive peripheral. That includes scanners and hard drives. Always plug these kinds of devices directly into your PC. Yes they say you can daisy-chain this and that, but sometimes marketing departments don't bother to tell consumers that this is not the best way to use USB/Firewire connections...
The final question I have is the type of dock you are using... I notice that if I go through my generic dock, it eats my battery charge within 5 minutes of synching. If I use a usb/dock cable instead, it lasts much longer. I don't have a firewire/dock cable-- I have to go through my generic dock and a plug-in firewire, which is making me wonder if my dock is crashing my PC. I am looking for a firewire/dock connector cable locally and will post it if that fixes my crashing problem.
Hope at least some of that was useful. Now if you find a way to help me use my firewire and 3g/docking ipod I'll be very grateful... even with my years of experience of destroying operating systems and mashing apps, I can't get it to work...

    Hello,
Thank you for your sharing, I find it is very useful. And I do not what is the problem of your iPod, but I hope the following post to this forum may helps
    Hello,
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“Partition Magic”.
    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iPod updater.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”
    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ at your own risk
    http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
Just in case that you are at the following situation
    Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning ! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery replacement (with pictures)
    http://www.kokopellimusic.us/KM_instructions.htm
Have I tried this myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

  • Keyboard (hardware & onscreen) suddenly don't work anymore - only factory reset helps

I have my Passport for about a month now and just experienced the following problem for the second time: all of sudden the keyboard (both hardware and onscreen) don't work anymore. I cannot enter my device password anymore, I can focus the password dialog, but then simply nothing happens when I press keys.
After a restart of the Passport it asks me for my SIM card PIN. Again, I can focus the text field in the dialog, and I can touch numbers of the onscreen keyboard, and the number keys light up, but no input gets to the dialog.
There is simply no way to activate the device anymore. I can do a backup using BlackBerry Link, and I can access the device with BlackBerry Blend - but the device itself is useless. No kind of restart or reset helps. The only solution is to do a factory reset, after that the device works fine again - for some time.
Once this happened while I was on the road, without doing anything with the device. The second time it happened when I was trying to deploy a self written app using the Momentics IDE.
    Additional information:
    - development mode is on (needed since I want to develop Apps for BB10)
    - Snap is installed
    - a handful of Android apps from Google Play store are installed
    - two BlackBerry World apps are installed (whatsapp and HUB++LED)
Did anyone experienced similar issues or has an idea what might cause this problem?
    Thanks!

I don't use any usb, only use PS2. Maybe it is possible to use some sort of a PS2 to usb converter, but I would rather like the PS2 to work.

  • Mac Pro no longer mounts external usb devices

    Hi there,
Last week my mac pro stopped mounting my ipod shuffle as a disk (i was using it like a usb memory stick), i thought it was a problem with the shuffle and left it aside. But just yesterday the mac stopped mounting my external lacie 500gb disk. I had never had any problems before this.
I then tried both the shuffle and external hd on my powerbook g4. They work perfectly!
I then thought it might have been a problem with the usb ports on the mac pro - although all my other usb devices were still working - so i booted into xp with bootcamp, and the devices were recognised in xp perfectly.
After searching various threads on different forums the general idea for this problem seemed to be to reinstall osx, which i have just done, and no joy. Im still not able to mount either of these devices.
System profiler sees the devices, but thats it.
Also, i recently bought a new usb memory stick (as i thought the shuffle was dead), this mounts and works perfectly!
    Anyone got any ideas?!
    Thanks

Yes, i did the combo update immediatly after reinstalling osx and before pluggin in the usb device.
The problem developed just before the release of 10.4.9, so i dont think it was the update that did it.
I've only just got this MP back from Apple. The PSU had to be replaced. It took them nearly 3 weeks to do

  • Cannot boot from external USB device

    Hi,
I have an iMac with a superdrive that is not working. This gives me a lot of trouble, because I want to install windows.
Some month ago, I bought an external USB DVD drive, and hoped that it would help. But I quickly experienced that it did not, since I could not get boot camp to use it.
Today, I was sure that I found a good solution. I ran into a site that explains how to use en external DVD to install windows on macbook air which have no internal DVD.
    http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/9136/macbook-air-install-windows-7-with-boot-camp -without-an-external-dvd-drive/
Unfortunately this do not work - for me and my iMac.
First I installed the rEFIt tool and this works fine. The external DVD shows up as a bootable device.
But when I try to start the windows installer from the external DVD, the system just hangs and shows a windows logo with no color. This operation I carry out by selecting the external DVD in the eEFIt menu.
    Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I don't know about the link you gave, I can only pass on my experience.
I made my bootable Windows7 X64 install disk by this method:-
"This method is used to create a new install disk if you have your authentic Windows 7 disk. Don't sweat it; it's much easier than it looks.
Note: you will need to do this on a PC
In your C drive, create these two folders: c:\windows7exe c:\windows7dvd
Go to this link http://rapidshare.com/files/297067205/oscdimg.exe and download Oscdimg.exe. Place it into c:\window7exe folder
Insert your Windows 7 disk into your DVD drive For this example, we will refer to it as the D drive.
You need to open a DOS prompt window. Do this by going to start/programs/accessories/command prompt
Your default command prompt will look something like C:\Users>.
At the prompt type cd c:\windows7exe
Your command prompt should now look like c:\window7exe>
At the command prompt, type in exactly (or copy and paste):
    oscdimg.exe -n -m -bd:\boot\etfsboot.com d:\ c:\windows7x64.iso
Note: the letter d in the above command refers to your DVD drive, change it if your DVD drive is labled with a different letter.
Press Enter. This will begin creating a new disk image. You should see a response in the DOS window that displays its progress.
When the process is complete, you will find a new disk image of your Windows 7 disk in the folder labeled c:\windows7X64
Now that you have a new disk image, you need to burn it onto a disk using ImgBurn. This is a free utility which you can download from here: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
Place a blank DVD into your DVD RW drive.
Launch ImgBurn and select "Write image file to disc". In the Source window, find your newly burned image in the c:\windows7X64 folder. Click on the disc icon at the bottom of the window to begin the burning process.
Voila! You have a new Windows 7 installation disk which will install with no problems. "
    .....which is on this thread
May not be any use to you without an internal DVD RW which works.
In your shoes I would really want to get my internal superdrive working.
A quick look at iFixit suggests the iMac uses a standard laptop DVD RW which are readily available, but perhaps I am missing something.

  • Seagate Backup Plus Slim External USB 3 Hard Drive Not Working with Mac Pro

Hi, I have just purchased a brand new Mac Pro.  I have three 2 TB Seagate Backup Plus Slim External USB 3 hard drives that just don't jive with the new Mac Pro's.  When the drive is connected, I cannot access the drive, read/write or even format.  Finder completely locks up and the drive cannot even be force ejected. When I try to format, Disk Utility either spits out an error that the drive cannot be read, or simply locks up.  This happens regardless of the OS on the Mac Pro.  I am currently running 10.10.2
I have ruled out an issues with the drives, as I have tested all of them on a variety of systems and OS's, including Power Mac, Mac Book Pro, PC, OS 10.7, 10.8, 10.9 as well as on Windows.  I have tried formatting in every file system including Mac OS Extended, Mac OS Extended (Journaled), NTFS and exFAT.  ALL other systems have no issues with the drives. Apple has replaced my Mac Pro with a brand new one and the drives still behave the same way.  Furthermore, I have tested the drives on three other Mac Pro's at work and they all reject the drives. So, on their own, there is nothing wrong with the Mac Pro, or the drives. However, the configuration of them together is wreaking havoc.
I have contacted Seagate, and this was their response:
The most recent version of the Backup Plus drives use the USB Attached SCSI (UAS) standard to increase transfer rates.  It's possible that the drivers being used currently on your Mac Pro are having issues using this feature with the standard USB 3.0 drivers installed.  I would recommend contacting Apple to check for any driver updates or see if they any suggestions for issues involving drives using UAS.
I have also started a case with Apple Support (Case # 755934373) and am waiting to hear back regarding Seagate's response.  I've spent DAYS trying to troubleshoot this and am now at a complete loss.  If anyone has any ideas, I'm all ears (or eyes in this case).
    Thanks!

    Hi danielsh6,
I recently bought the new Lacie Thunderbolt 2 D2 3TB and I had the same problem as you, i have a macbook pro early 2011, those support thunderbolt but many times there is a bug that doesn't let you connect any thunderbolt drives to your computer. The solution I found was installing this update:
    Thunderbolt Firmware Update v1.0
Before doing this I would recommend you updating to mountain lion (not yosemite yet as there is still some glitches and more on preview's macbook pro's).
    Hope this helped!

  • Cannot get USB/iPhone (or any USB device I try) to work to VM or another PC thru RDP

I am trying to use Microsoft RemoteFX USB.  I have it configured to be enabled on my laptop.  I see my iPhone in the RDP settings to share when I RDP to another PC in my network or to a VM on another PC in my network.  I check it to share.
I connect but no joy the iPhone does not share to the computer I RDP too.  All machines/VMs are running Windows 8.1.  Besides enabling "Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Connection
Client\RemoteFX USB Device Redirection", running gpupdate /force, and rebooting my laptop that is the only config I know I need to do.  Then off course checking the USB device (IPhone or whatever) in the RDP settings before I connect.
This laptop does run Hyper-V and does have an external LAN connection configured.  But I can't believe that causes it to not share the USB through RDP.  I have all windows updates applied to all the machines.  I am baffled this should be
a straight forward thing but it just doesn't seem to work.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Couple of notes:
My iPhone/USB Device is connected before I  RDP
I tried Hyper-V enhanced session too
Firewalls are disabled on both the laptop and where I RDP too
    I can share drives
I tried disabling sharing anything but the iPhone/USB Device (tried camera and Jawbone device too)
The iPhone/USB Device still works on the laptop when I RDP and it should not
I tried to a Windows Server 2012 R2 server and VM too still no joy

    Hi,
The host you are connecting to needs to be running Enterprise edition or Server 2012/2012 R2 with Remote Desktop Session Host Role Service installed.
