Extra Second Tonight

If someone gave you a second in time, what would you do with it?
Today / tonight we gain a leap second
Midnight will come later tonight as for the first time in three years an extra second is added to the official time set by atomic clocks.
The "leap second" means the last minute of June will have 61 seconds in it.
Leap seconds - and leap years - are added as basic ways to keep the clock in sync with the Earth and its seasons
However, there are concerns the extra second could cause problems for some computer systems because it has to be added manually
Timekeepers are divided over whether to keep the additional unit of time - and the issue is set to be debated at a meeting later this year.
Unpredictable rotation
The addition will mean that the last minute of June will have 61 seconds; while 23:59:59 usually becomes 00:00:00, the leap second will ensure the time becomes 23:59:60.
Peter Whibberley, senior research scientist at the UK's National Physical Laboratory (NPL), said: "Because they depend on measurements of the Earth's rotation, which varies unpredictably, leap seconds occur at irregular intervals."
News coverage has focused on the potential for software problems that could affect financial trading and other operations around the world. Mr Whibberley, who works in the time and frequency group at NPL, stressed the need for planning.
"Leap seconds are announced only six months in advance. This means computers and software cannot be supplied with leap seconds programmed in, and they must be inserted manually," he explained.
"Getting leap seconds wrong can cause loss of synchronisation in communication networks, financial systems and many other applications which rely on precise timing.
"Whenever a leap second occurs, some computer systems encounter problems due to glitches in the code written to handle them. The consequences are particularly severe in the Asia-Pacific region, where leap seconds occur during normal working hours."
Because the irregularity of adding leap seconds causes problems for computer networks, several proposals have been put forward to abolish them.
The issue is still being considered by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and is set to be discussed at the World Radiocommunication Conference in Geneva in November this year.
Delegates will aim to reach a decision to either end leap seconds or adopt a technical solution to reduce the problems they cause.

if Inception has taught us anything its that a second in sleep-time can last for ages (and is super slow-mo), so its probably best spent there methinks.

  • FCP6 adds 20 extra seconds when exporting to .FLV

When I export a FCP6 project to .flv (File> Export> Using quicktime conversion and Format: Flash Video (FLV))it automatical adds 20 extra seconds to the end, showing the last frame, before the movie stops.
    How can I avoid this?

    Hi Ken,
IMHO the FLV component is cr*p. Look at the version number. It says something with X... which usually is the moniker for development versions. Come on (M)A(cro)dobe.
    Btw. is it Flash CS3?
    So, try the following:
Export your timeline as a self-contained QuickTime-Movie (File > Export > QuickTime Movie, then Checkbox: Make Movie self-contained).
Then use the standalone Flash video encoder application (in /Applications folder).
If that doesn't work either, you could also try 3rd party apps:
    VisualHub - http://www.techspansion.com/visualhub/
    Flix Encoder Standard - http://www.on2.com/products/flix/flix-standard/
The latter supports Flash 8 (better quality VP6 codec). Both are reasonably priced ($23, $39) and have demo versions available.
    Hope this helps.
    Best regards, Oliver

  • Extra Seconds?

Whenever I export to iTunes it adds about 3-4 seconds to each song of blankness. Is there a way to remove these blank seconds?

    Hi gregory.
Blankness at the begining or the end?
two ways to go about it...
Move the end of song marker, the little purple triangle in the time line, closer to the end of your song. Easiest.
Or click on the cycle region button and select as much audio as you want to be in the song and export.

  • Why is my exported file 2 seconds longer than the project in my timeline

I am using a Mac, latest OSX. I need my project to run at exactly 30minutes. In the timeline my project is marked at exactly 30 minutes from the in/out points. When I export the media with Premier Pro I end up with a final product which is 30 minutes and 2 seconds long. Where are these two extra seconds coming from? I had my source range set for Sequence in/out points and this read as 30 miutes exactly, and the predicted output time for the final export read as 30 minutes exactly as well. This still added two extra seconds so I then set the source range to custom and typed in 30minutes exactly and it is STILL giving me 2 extra seconds. What is going on here?
Export settings summary reads as follows
    1920x1080 (1.0)
    23.976 fps
    Progressive
    00:30:00:00
    VBR
    1 pass
    Target 0.19 Mbps
    Max 0.19 Mbps
    AAC
    320 kbps
    48 kHz
    Stereo

Because within Premiere Pro, your are reading the total running time based on Non-drop frame timecode.
Depending on which version of Quicktime you are using you can click on the counter and change the value of the numbers displayed:
where Standard is real time. If you switch it Non Drop, you'll see it will display the length (incorrectly) as 30 minutes.
If you are using Quicktime 10 I believe you can only display real time.
This is all because your video is running at 23.976 frames per second. That means it is running slightly slower than real time, which would be true 24fps. Over the period of 30 minutes, this slow frame playback is making the show run longer by two seconds.
This why in NTSC 29.97 and 59.94 video there is drop and non-drop timecode. Drop frame timecode drops timecode numbers over time to compensate for the difference that the video rate is slightly slower than real time.
In drop frame, when you have a duration of 30 minutes, it coresponds to real time 30 minutes.
In non-drop timecode, when you have a duration indicating  30 minutes  it will actually take slightly longer to playout.
There is not a standard for 24fps drop frame timecode, it is always non-drop. You can't switch to drop frame timecode if your sequence frame rate is 23.976 or 24fps.
    The math:
If you had 30 minutes of footage running at 24 fps - 24fps X 60 = 1440 frames in a minute, 1440 x 30 = 43200 frames in the show. (So non-drop TC, which counts the frames without regard to the true playback rate, displays a duration of 30 minutes)
But since the video, is, in fact, running slightly slower, at 23.976, those 43200 frames take longer to play out by .024 frame per second of real time.  So 43200  (your total show amount of frames) divided by 23.976 (the playout per second frame rate) = 1801.801802 seconds, which is 30 minutes, 1.8 seconds.
Avid used to ( and maybe still does) come with a calculator to make this conversion and to help make the frame count = the desired running time.
It should be noted that within commercial production, with durations of 30 or 60 seconds, this whole mess is less apparent. It only shows up when you work with program length material. This is why they invented drop frame timecode.
A solution is to tighten up the edit by 1.8 seconds over 30 minutes

  • Possible to adjust # of seconds given to photos in Slideshow?

Is there a way to adjust the amount of time given to each photo in an iPhoto slideshow? I find that reading the caption (not necessarily long ones, either) and looking at the photo is rushed. I want a few extra seconds!
    — Lorna in Southern California

Click on SlideShow then Settings (both at the bottom of the main iPhoto window), then change the seconds to whatever you want. These settings are the defaults for the entire show. If you want to set each slide to a different # of seconds, I don't know if that's possible. If you're close to an Apple store, you could ask them.

  • UCCE 8.5 add extra Instance

    Hi,
I'm looking for some guidelines how I can add an extra instance (via Domain Manager) in the ICM.
Current environment is an UCCE 8.5.
Is it correct that I've to move to UCCH, when I want to have an extra (second) instance?
How can I migrate to UCCH ? Do I need additional licenses or software updates? (or complete redesign??)
Or is it just a way of how to name the UCCE deployment?
Btw: Adding an instance, does it requires the A2Q process?
I hope I get some help on this, and thank you in advance!
    rg
    Remco

    thnx!
And if you add an extra instance, do you call it from that point an UCCH? Or is that something complete different?
I think I'll start A2Q to be sure, they will tell me if it is supported or not,
PDI Helpdesk had contacted the BU, and they say it is not supported on UCCE 8.5, you have to deploy UCCH......
I'm a little bit confused now.

  • 2-second delay on playback

    Hello,
I just sat down to start editing today and suddenly whenever I try to play back my sequence, there's a two-second delay. It didn't do this yesterday, and nothing has changed. I'm editing a trailer so the sequence is only 1 minute long.
I restarted the machine; no dice.
Any ideas why this would start happening out of nowhere? It was perfectly fine last night.
Many thanks for any help you may offer,
    Sean

I'm going to guess that by accident last night you hit the "delay playback by 2 seconds" keyboard shortcut.
If you were sleeping overnight and also during the day, I think you need to get up earlier and get to work.
    Sorry.
It might be worth checking under System Settings / Playback Control. If somehow that got set to 30 it would account for an extra second of delay after requesting "play".
For kicks, do you get the same delay with J for reverse, or when pressing J or L additional times to change speed? Or when doing anything else?
Is your project file suddenly huge, or do you have large unrendered sections or still imports?

  • Encore Cutting Off Last Few Seconds of Burn

I created an avi file in Video Explosion Deluxe, which clocks in at 1:24:33.  I've verified by playing the file on Windows Media Player that it plays fine all the way through to the end.
I imported it to Encore (I have the 3.0 version) as the only component in this particular project, and burned to DVD, at 7 Mbps, at a speed of 4x, which was the lowest speed option available.
Everything is fine until almost the end.  It freezes at 1:24:28.
When I play the file in Encore to preview it before burning, it plays through to the end fine.  So it recognizes the whole file.
I tried multiple more burns, and they always freeze 4-6 seconds from the end.
I then took that video file and imported it to Premiere Pro and created a new AVI file of the same thing.  That behaves exactly the same when I burn to DVD with Encore.
I then started over and created the AVI file anew in Video Explosion Deluxe.  Same result when I burn it to DVD with Encore.
I then created it as an mpeg file with Video Explosion Deluxe.  Same result.
I then added a menu in Encore before burning.  (I usually don't bother with a menu if there's just the one item instead of separate chapters.)  Instead of freezing 4-6 seconds before the end, it plays to that point 4-6 seconds from the end and then reverts back to displaying the menu.
I then checked the last two DVDs I'd burned with Encore and realized that they too end 4-6 seconds before the end of the video file.  (I don't mean of that same project; I mean two different projects with different video files.  I just hadn't examined them closely enough when I burned them.)
I've experimented with just adding a few blank seconds to the end of the project in Video Explosion Deluxe or Premiere before creating the AVI file, but I haven't been able to make it come out right yet.  For instance, I added ten blank seconds (making it 1:24:43 long, of which I really only want the first 1:24:33), and the subsequent DVD I burned froze at the 1:24:30 mark.
It's possible through trial and error I'll eventually figure out some way of adding the right amount of blank material to get it to stop at the 1:24:33 mark or just after, but this is silly, especially since it's apparently doing this with every project now and I don't want to be stuck trying to time this workaround just right every time.
Why won't it simply burn the entire file?

Appreciate the responses.  On the rare occasions I've posted computer-related questions in online forums, they are nearly always greeted with silence, or the equivalent of "Read the manual and stop bothering us, newbie!"  So it's a pleasant surprise when people actually try to help.
I've come up with another convoluted workaround that seems like it's actually working.
I'm making an additional AVI file of the last few seconds of each of the movies on VED.
So let's say it's a 1:20:00 AVI file that plays fine all the way to the end, but mysteriously when then burned to DVD stops at about the 1:19:55 mark.
I now have that AVI file, plus a six second file that is a duplicate of the 1:19:54-1:20:00 stretch of the first file.
I import both to Encore and place the full file on the timeline.  I then chop off precisely the last six seconds of that, meaning it is now 1:19:54 long.  Then I take my other six second AVI file and place it immediately after that back-to-back on the timeline.  I watch that part in Encore before burning to make sure they fit together exactly--i.e., there's not a skip where a frame is missing or a frame is duplicated.
I've tried it on two, and both DVDs played through to the end as they're supposed to.
Evidently whatever screws up the last few seconds of the movies made with VED (which, by the way, never happened until the last couple days in all the years I've used VED) isn't affecting these little six or so second long AVI files I'm making to stick on the end.  Maybe it's only files above a certain size or something that it's embedding some kind of mystery flaw near the end.
I'll be using primarily Premiere for my projects moving forward, so if this is solely a VED issue, I should be fine after this work I happen to be doing now.
Now, specifically on Hunt's suggestions, I've checked the projects on VED, and the video and audio tracks end at precisely the same frame.
Especially if my convoluted workaround stops working, I can next try adding that second or so of only video to the project before creating the video and audio files.
Just in perusing the options in VED, I'm not sure though if it's possible to make a video-only or audio-only file as you describe doing with Premiere.  Is that (not "muxing") something that the more rudimentary video editing programs don't do?  I know with VED I can simply delete all the content on the video tracks, say, or turn them off, but I don't think that gives me an audio-only WAV file.  I believe it just means I'd end up with a conventional AVI file that happens to have a black screen as its video from start to finish.
So perhaps I could take the AVI file made with VED, place it on the Premiere timeline and there do the trick with the extra second of video.  However, whatever the flaw is seems to be in the VED created AVI files, so I think anything done in Premiere with such a file after the fact would be too late.

  • Subclip has extra audio in timeline, out of sync but no sign in timeline

Ok, so, when I created a sublip and checked it in the viewer it looked and sounded perfectly in sync. Once I put it into the timeline and play it in the canvas it looks like the clip accrues an extra second or two of audio and therefore it's out of sync. However the clips don't show this. The red box that indicates how out of synch the audio and video are doesn't appear on the clips in the timeline. Why is this, how can I fix this? Thanks.

Well, I was looking in the browser at my media, which is DV and was imported using an HVX200, and I noticed that all of the tapes I imported save for one have a video rate of 24 fps, data rate of 2.9 MB per sec, and an audio rate of 48048 Hz and under field dominance it says 'None'. The exception is one that for some reason has a video rate of 29.97 fps, 3.6 MB/sec, audio rate of 48.0 KHz and under field dominance it says 'Lower (Even)'. This exception is the only material where when I sub-clip from it and put it into the timeline the material doesn't go out of sync. All of the others do go out of sync. The solution may be very simple and I don't know if I gave enough information to help you supply an answer but as you probably guessed I'm very much a beginner at this so any help would be appreciated. Thanks for the response!
Oh and as for how I've been sub-clipping I've just been going through the sources, putting in and out points and overwriting or inserting.

  • Garageband: exporting tracks shorter than 5 seconds

In Garageband I'm trying to export audio tracks that are not much longer than 1-2 seconds long - really short projects! - but when I do export them and then play them in my iTunes they are now about 5 seconds long. This is a bit lengthy for what I want them for. Is there any way of exporting a project that can be any shorter than 5 seconds? Anyone know?

thanks for the 'oddball' pointer, and the 'zoom slider' thingy! I didn't know about these things. I tried them both and I really thought I would get it working this time but for some annoying reason my 1.5ish second project always exports with about 3 extra seconds of blank play time at the end. ARRRGH! It's always the small problems that really get me!! Thanks for all you're effort so far!!!!!
    THE STEPS I TAKE:
    1. I make sure the orange track is pulled back to 0 secs
    2. I press the cycle region button [the button with the two little recycling/circling arrows(which is right next to the play and skip buttons)]
    3. I use the zoom slider (very useful!! thanks) and then adjust the orange cycle region [which appears on the beat ruler] so that it is the same length [EXACTLY] as my 1.5ish length track.
    4. I try to pull the little end-of-track marker [the purple arrow] back [to the left] but will only come as far as 14:00 seconds?? weird!
    5. Then finally I go to 'Share' in the menu bar and 'Export Podcast to Disk...'
    6. I double-click my exported .m4a file which opens automatically in my iTunes but "lo and behold!!" it's no longer a 1.5 second track but a 5 sec one!!!!!!!!!!!!
I want to keep my 1.5ish sec track 1.5 even after it is exported. Is it possible?
My Garageband keeps adding those extra 3 seconds on the end when I export!!!!???
Is there an option I haven't selected?

  • Extra Pre & Post Roll CC In Lieu of Transitions?

I understand that Color is currently in version 1 and doesn't as of yet bring in transitions - but I'm wondering, in lieu of this - if there could be/is a pre & post roll color correction setting: such that, say, and extra second of post roll and a second of pre-roll for each CC'd clip is also color corrected.
This is nice because for now, it allows you to re-create transitions you may have lost in the export to color, and in the future, it's also nice because it would allow you to adjust the length of the transitions once back in FCP, even after color begins to accept them.
Regardless, if such a setting currently exists, please let me know.
    Thanks

  • Can I run a cmdlet in the IF comparison instead of using a variable?

I'm writing a script to run a continuous Test-Connection ping through task scheduler.  This script, upon a non-response, will write to a custom event log I've set up.
Without writing a book, here's an example of what I want to save time and get more ping requests.  Here's the way I have it now:
    $ping1 = Test-Connection 1.1.1.1 -count 1
    if ($ping1 -eq $null) {
    Write-EventLog blah blah blah
Here's how I would rather do it to save that extra second or two from establishing the variable (this obviously doesn't work, otherwise I wouldn't be posting this):
    if ("Test-Connection 1.1.1.1 -count 1" -eq $null) {
    Write-EventLog blah blah blah
Is this at all possible?  If so, can you share the syntax?
Right now, I have a foreach running 3 different pings and writing to my custom log on error.  I have purposefully configured one to fail and the other two to be successful.  Right now, I'm getting 8 seconds between that one failure.  Ideally,
with just 3 IPs, this should be 3 seconds.

    Hi,
    Try this:
    If (!(Test-Connection hostname -Quiet -Count 1)) { Write-Host 'Host is down' }
EDIT: ! is used in place of -not. You could also do this:
    If ((Test-Connection hostname -Quiet -Count 1) -eq $false) { Write-Host 'Host is down' }

  • How to pacman -Sy by hand, or against only a single repo? [SOLVED]

I've written a wrapper for makepkg that builds my packages and adds them to my local custom repo. If I give the wrapper a -i flag, I want to then install them from the repo. I suppose I could just use pacman -U, but I prefer to use yaourt -S local_repo/package_name=desired_version. To do this, though, I have to synch my pacman lib db against the newly updated local_repo. Currently I'm just doing a pacman -Sy to do that. Downside is that hits all the other repos too. Often I find myself building and rebuilding and reinstalling a package multiple times as I tweak the PKGBUILD. Repeatedly synching against all the repos is bad for me (few extra seconds every cycle) and bad for the repos.
What I need is a way to synch against only my local_repo. I can't figure out how to do that using any pacman cmd-line switch. The format of the repo file looks very simple, so I tried doing this manually:
    sudo tar -xzf /path/to/local_repo/local_repo.db.tar.gz -C /var/lib/pacman/sync/local_repo
    stat --printf "%X" /path/to/local_repo/local_repo.db.tar.gz | sudo tee /var/lib/pacman/sync/local_repo/.lastupdate > /dev/null
But pacman still seems not to notice the changes. E.g. if I do pacman -Si local_repo/new_package, I get a report of the previous package version, not the newly added one.
Is there any way to synch just my local repo, either using pacman or by hand?

You're right, that works.  As happens too often, I was making things more difficult than they needed to be...
EDIT: it works sometimes, and sometimes doesn't. I still can't figure out what determines the difference...
If you untar on top of a directory, any existing directories (at least at the top level) that don't exist in the archive will be left there, not removed. But this is fine for my purposes. I can wait until the next full pacman sync to delete them.
And the problem of I-dont-wanna-untar-the-old-stuff-too can be solved by doing:
    sudo tar -xzvf "$PKGDEST/$REPONAME.db.tar.gz" --after-date="@$(cat /var/lib/pacman/sync/$REPONAME/.lastupdate)" -C /var/lib/pacman/sync/$REPONAME
That is, we use the sync dir's existing .lastupdate file to give us a date (in Unix epoch format, which tar needs to see as "@12234556"), and we tell tar just to extract the files modified after that date. I can tell from the -v output that this is working properly.
But it's still a mystery why sometimes this works and sometimes doesn't...
    # ...add new package version to local_repo, then...
    sudo repo-add path/to/local_repo.db.tar.gz path/to/new/package
    # untar local_repo.db.tar.gz on top of /var/lib/pacman/sync/local_repo, as above, then...
    sudo pacman -S local_repo/new_package=new_version

  • Thunderbolt SMS text errors after downloading update.

So far, after downloading the newest update for the Thunderbolt on Thu July 14th, I have been having more problems with the phone than I have ever had before. It seems like I am now consistently having THREE different problems with the Messages component of the software:
    1) I go to select a conversation and it highlights the conversation when I tap the one that I'm trying to select, but it doesn't open it. Fairly often I have to hit it an extra 1-2 times for it to open the convo...
    2) I select a conversation to open, and it opens a conversation for someone else. I haven't had any "calibration" issues with the touch-screen before AND it looks like it highlights the convo that I am trying to open, but then it seems to open another random person from my list of conversations. I'm pretty sure I'm not pressing the wrong one because many times, the one it opens is somewhere way down in the list when I'm just trying to select the most recent one.
    3) I have a text conversation open and I know I have the correct one open because I am reading what the person said so I can reply to it. I type in my reply and hit send, and every once in a while it will take about 5-10 extra seconds to send and displays a small dialogue box that says either "Waiting" or "Sending" or "Loading" (I can't quite remember which one). Then the screen switches to a conversation with someone else and it shows that I sent the message to that other person that I didn't even have open. It does actually send it to the wrong person too because I have had someone ask me what I was talking about in my seemingly random text... Pretty frustrating, and now I have to be VERY careful of what I say in my texts because I don't know what random person it might get sent to. A little scary!!!!!
IS ANYONE ELSE HAVING THESE PROBLEMS WITH THE NEW UPDATE??? I have not downloaded any apps from the Android Market that modify my message layout or anything. I'm just using the stock Massages app.

    Hello Jordan216,
I know messaging is an important form of communication and can be a bit frustrating when not working properly.  I would first suggest to try to clear the data for the text messaging application by navigating to Settings>Applications>Manage Applications>All>Text messaging>Clear Data.  After clearing the data please power cycle the device and retest.  If that does not assist considering you have the most recent software I would then suggest doing a factory reset.  This will erase everything on the device so please back up if desired.  You may do so by going to Settings>SD & Phone Storage>Factory Data Reset>Reset Phone>Erase Everything.  The phone will prompt you to reactivate after the reset is done and I would like for you to observe the messaging after.  If this addresses the issue great, if not please let me know so I may further assist you.  Thank you.

  • Timeline Lagging in Playback

So I have an issue with Adobe Audition CS6.  When I playback ANY audio file and watch it in the timeline the timeline lags.  Either the waveform or the spectral display, the video is always lagging behind the audio.  I can't find any answer to this anywhere.  And it isn't a consisten lag either.  It gets wors as time goes by.  It seems like for ever fifteen seconds of playback the timeline lags behind the audio an extra second.  So at a minute it is four seconds behind.  When I stop and start it catches up but the lagging builds again.
I'm at a total loss now.  Thank you for any help.

The first thing to ask is whether you've installed the 5.0.2 update? If you haven't, you can find it here (assuming you're a Windows user). This resolves a number of issues, and really is the first thing you should try.
