Extreemly odd Sound problem

Hi All.
As usual, I am mighty stuck after trying all avenues to sort out this extreemly odd and seemingly specific problem I am having.
I am using:
After Effects CS4
Windows XP
University Workstation computers
There are two labs at the university I work for, both kitted out with the Adobe CS4 suite plus other software for the variuous media courses.  In one class I tried to show someone how Sound could be imported into After Effects and it would not work (I will explain the exact problem in a bit) I tried it on my machine and it did work.  Today I ran a full class and every single student couldn't get the sound to work but it worked fine on the machine I was logged into.
After a lot of testing and trying, it boiled down to the fact that if you are logged into the computer as a staff member, After Effects works fine with sound, as in, how you would expect it to work with sound.  However, if a student is logged in, this is what happens...
The sound file will import to the project bin in After Effects with no error message.  However, it has no wave form on the thumbnail and Zero information beside the thumbnail.  You can drag it into the timeline and it appears as a grey layer.  Ram preview, rendering with audio, ctrl dragging the playhead all result in no audio output and there is no audio mute option in the timeline.  It is as if the audio file is a proxy file or a ghost file of some sort.  I have been using After Effects for over 8 years and have never witnessed this before.
The same audio file will play fine in QuickTime, WMP or anything else, but After Effects seems to just see it as a shell of a file and doesn't know what to do with it.  Whilst we are organising a work around for the students, I thought I would put the problem to you talented people as I am out of options as to what the problem could be.
- It obviously seems it could be something to do with the log in type at the university, but I don't know what type of operating system User restrictions could specifically stop an audio file from being used in After Effects.
- I have checked the disk Cache, and cecked the audio settings inside After Effects and on XP.  I have also reset the preferences file for After Effects
- This is not a preview or rendering problem.  I know how to use, render and preview audio in After Effects, it is another problem which I am not aware of, obviously.
- I have tried mp3, wav, aiff sound files and they all play fine on the same computer under student log in using a variety of software, even Premiere pro.  The same problem occurs if I import a movie clip with sound, the sound is non existent, even though it is there.  But keep in mind, if I log onto the same computer a student was using, all is fine again.
I hope someone knows what this is.  I have searched sideways on the net for a solution and I have found some people who have posted the same problem (but minus any log in accounts being a part of the problem) but they get swamped by people telling them to do a ram preview or plug their headphones in and then the actual problem never gets answered due to a everyone giving information who don't actually read the original problem.
Apologies for a long explanation but I wanted to give as much information as possible so that someone might pick up on it and know a solution.
Thanks in advance as allways and thank you for reading.
Mel

Group policies! Your users simply don't have the permission to modify, load and unload system drivers. Either up them all to the Power Users group or run gpedit.msc and find the respective option and add whatever current group you use to the list.

  • Desperately need some help!! iTunes/Quicktime/iChat/Sound problems....

So, yesterday, I was online, on google video, and when I pressed play on the video, there was no sound, but the video worked...the same was true on every video site i checked. My computer volume was at max, and I even tested the speakers to make sure they were on, and they indeed were.
I thought that was odd...but then the problems really started.....
After that, I clicked on my iChat icon. It bounced once, and did not open. The same thing happened when I clicked on iTunes. 1 bounce, and then nothing. I checked to make sure all of my iTunes mp3 files were on my computer....they indeed are all still here, bit nothing I can do opens iTunes. I've run disc utilities, and disc repair...according to that, everything is peachy-keen on my computer.....but iChat and iTunes STILL will not open, and there is still no sound on anything.
Now, i'm leaning towards the archive and install option....or even just backing up what I want to save, wiping the drive, and starting from scratch.....but i'd really like to not have that happen.
(and, as a side question, if all I want to save are images, several documents, and many mp3 files, would everything be okay if I just backed them up on an external drive, and then loaded them back on to my computer after reinstalling OS X?)
Sorry about the length of this, but I am at my wit's end, and I have no idea what to do.

by third-party, do you mean things I installed that are not manufactured by mac? If that is the case, I have microsoft office, Smart Music, Flip4mac, and Senuti.
I got rid of Flip4Mac to see if that affected my sound problems, but it did not. So, as of now, my problem remains the same...

  • Odd sound from Superdrive

Recently, the superdrive on my G5 Quad core started making an odd sound - with no disk present, and for no reason at all, it would make a whirring/clicking sound, like it was looking to read a disk. It does this randomly, sometimes every few minutes, sometimes not for hours. It will cycle once or twice, then stop. Regular read/write performance seems unaffected. Any thoughts/solutions? Thanks - Dave

Mine does the same thing. It happens about every 5 to 6 minutes, it will make a little click or spinup check like it's checking to see if there's a disk in the drive.
I have no problem burning disks/dvd's etc, but this just started happening after I upgraded to 10.4.8.
It's sorta irritating to hear and I worry that it's causing unnessesary wear and tear on my drive.
Unless there's some way to figure out what is happening, I'm going to reformat my machine to see if it goes away.
The only other new CD rom app I've installed is DVD2ONEX.
Do you have this app installed?

  • Partial freeze, then an odd sound

At random as I'm using my iMac G5, everything freezes, I can still move my mouse and I get the multi-colored pinwheel telling me its "thinking". If I was playing music it stops, if I was using Photoshop I can no longer touch what I was doing. And this odd sound emanates from the upper left corner of my iMac. It sounds like a ticking clock. Its not coming from the speakers its from the computer case itself. Then after a few moments, or sometimes minutes, it stops and everything resumes. If I had tried to close a window while it was 'frozen', when the ticking stops and everything resumes the window closes. Its almost like the processor ceases and then comes back or something. Anyone else run into this problem? Please help! I intend to call Apple tomorrow, as it has become very annoying.
    Thanks!

Welcome to Discussions - indeed, call Apple, a ticking sound can mean that your drive is dying. If at all possible, back up your data now, try and make a clone of your system using SuperDuper!.
    Let us know what happens,

  • Odd sound/signal

    Hi everyone,
This could be kind of odd, but I'm hearing a sort of signal/sound when I listen to music while on earphones. It is like an indication for something and similar to sound when e-mail arrives. It doesn't disturb me, but could be cool to know the reason for this signal.
Thanks for any of your help.
P.S. I have just purchased MBAir so I'm not familair with full functionality and stuff like that:)
    Best regards,

please tell me what is problem in My Laptop. i have window 7 ultimate operating system.
    Please help me sir

What sound problem - no sound on anything, no sound on some apps ?
Have you got notifications muted ? Only notifications (including games) get muted, so the iPod and Videos apps, and headphones, still get sound.
Depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (mute or rotation lock), then you can mute notifications by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad, or via the taskbar : double-click the home button; slide from the left; and it's the icon far left; press home again to exit the taskbar. The function that isn't on the side switch is set via the taskbar instead : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4085
And for future info typing in all capitals is considered to be SHOUTING

I am using Firefox 3.6.8. Oddly, my problem appeared a few hours PRIOR to Firefox automatically installing the latest updates (the week ending 7/23), not afterwards. The problem is this: the browser continues to display tabs, the reload/home/history/favorites icons, URL field and Google search field while in full-screen mode, so it's not really full-screen anymore. How can I correct this?

Do you have that problem when running in the Firefox SafeMode?

  • Sound problems on ProBook 6550b, running on Win 7 Pro x32bit..

I have been getting very similar sound problems on my notebook as posted by most: internal speakers work on original Audio HD drivers, but there is no sound when I connect external speakers or headphones. I up-graded the audio drivers to IDT HD Audio and I get sound coming from external speakers or headphones, but nothing from internal speakers.
I have tried everything from reporting the problem on public forums, live help, and done this or that, but nothing changes. It's so very clear to me that it has to do with audio drivers, which don't seem to work appropriately to cover all aspects of sound output.
I also, often, get this loud, weird, irritating noise and a frozen PC when I am playing music with the notebook, while on the internet. The best I do is not to do both at the same time. I have seen similar problems on blogs, but tangible solutions are NOT offered!!!! Please help...

Audio Switching coudl be due to several reason. if you have tried latest audio drivers and latest Video drivers from hp.com, i suggest you to get audio board replaced for your computer.
    Hope it helps.

  • Any resolution to the sound problem?

I have been having the same sound problem with my Mid 2010 Mac Pro tower ever since I got it.  I have been in touch with Apple and have been told that they are familiar with the problem, but that they are still working on a fix.  The problem is that I have external speakers, and every time I shut down and then start up again, I have to go to preferences and physically change the sound output to go to the speakers.  I have also been tole that the Mac is supposed to sense the external speakers and go directly to them.
Is there anybody else out there with this problem, and has been able to resolve it?
    Thank you.

I have a 2010 Mac Pro and use the stereo line out jack in the back of my machine for my speakers with no problem.  I don't recall any problems setting it up.  But check the Audio MIDI Setup (in your utilities folder) to see if you can set it from there (should be able to).  Not sure why the preference wouldn't stick.  And I don't believe there is automatic detection of an attached sound output device where the sound preference switches to that (unless maybe the front jack which I never use).

  • Sound Problems on iPad: how to fix, easy [video]

    Hi dear iPad user,
Most people will, eventually, have sound problems: the cause can be complex as a 'miss-behaved' app that messes the sound engine or as simple as the iPad being forgotten on Mute/Volume Down.
I used to help family and friends to fix their iPads' sound problems by sending them 'text' instruction steps... lots of times they ended up calling me on the phone...
    So I made a video (short: 1m40s):
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FjBP-Ncj_fE
    It shows:
how to unmute the sound (even if the side-switch locks the rotation of the screen)
    how to put volume up
how to close all the apps (in the case there is an App messing with the sound system)
how to reboot the iPad (ultimatelly fixes hard cases of messed sound system)
What it won't fix: if you have a hardware problem...
If you do all the steps and you get NO SOUND AT ALL, please, try also checking if you car listen sounds using a HEADPHONE (you know are working conditions). If you can listen to sounds in the headphone but no sound at all in the iPad's built in speaker, well, there might be a hardware problem and you should look for help on an Apple Retail Store or other official technical support available at your location.
    Hope this helps!
    Everson.

UPDATE: fixing iPad Sound after iOS 7
    http://youtu.be/SDf1LDcE95Q
    (1min 36sec)
    It covers the basics:
    checking side-switch / mute / "Control Center"
    volume all up
    ...and also the worst cases:
closing all apps (for rare cases when a single app might render the sound system instable)
    rebooting the iPad
So, don't get desparete: try the things in the video.
There are people who reported having forgotten an audio-bluetooth connection activated with a turned-off sound-system or speakers... or forgot Air-Play turned on... so be sure you disengage bluetooth and/or airplay.
On the 'hardware side', dirty dock connector (30 pin) can make the iPad 'think' it is connected to external audio - if so, cleaning it with a dry toothbrush can fix. Also, moisture in the headphones connector can make the iPad switch to 'headphones' even without headphones connected, making it silent: check if you can hear things with headphones plugged in - if so, try gently inserting and removing headphones a few times and check if you get sound back to iPad's speakers alone.
Good luck to everybody! Audio problems are quite common - fontunately they are easy to fix.

    Hi Nick,
Sorry for the long delay I only just noticed your post. Easily done if you post in the middle of another thread.
To diagnose your sound problem the best approach is to systematically check (and isolate) each possible problem area until the culprit is found. For sound problems follow the sequence :-
    1. Check Hardware. If you have a manual control check that it is turned fully on (this may be a wheel or knob somewhere on your notebook). There is no point carrying on if this is turned down/off.
    2. Check Software. This is where the fun begins.
2.1 Check the sound properties (available from Control Panel) and make sure that the MUTE box is not ticked.
2.2 Check the individual volume levels shown on the sound properties box. Set them all to maximum.
2.3 Select Device Manager (from Control Panel) and check the entry for Sound/audio devices. Select your sound device and click the 'troubleshooting' option. Follow the on-screen checks.
2.4 If you still have no sound deinstall the sound device (from ADD/REMOVE hardware) and reboot. The system should detect the sound device and re-install it)
2.5 Finally download and reinstall the correct device drivers for your sound devive from the Toshiba web-site.
2.6 If you still have no sound after all of the above then I would recommend a complete re-install of your system from the Toshiba Recovery CDs. and if that does not correct the problem then you will need to take it to a Service Agent for them to sort it out.

  • USB Sound Problem

I'm having a problem with my Bose USB sound system that has just recently developed. The system is plugged directly into the back of my Mac Pro desktop so it's not going through any hubs or secondary systems. When I first start my computer the sound works just fine. But after about 10 to 15 minutes of use the sound stops completely - as if the sounds have been turned off. If I boot into Windows 7 using Boot Camp, the sound system there works just fine with no problems at all, so I do not believe this issue is hardware related but is something associated with OS X.
This all started recently after installing Tinker Tool and then realizing that their latest version is not compatible with Snow Leopard. I followed their directions and told Tinker Tool to restore the previous settings and then I removed it from my system. Now, I'm having this USB sound problem. I think it's highly probable to be the cause of my problem.
Is there anyway to reinstall the USB drivers in OS X without reinstalling the entire OS? Or, is there something else I can try to restore the USB function to Snow Leopard? Many thanks for any tips or suggestions.

    They are plug and play.
I did try unplugging all of the USB devices and then powered off the computer and unplugged it for about 5 minutes as I heard that that sometimes solves USB problems. However, upon reconnecting the problem returned. All other USB devices seem to be working normally - it's only the Bose sound system. I tried plugging it into a different USB port in the back of the computer but the problem continued after about 10 minutes. Therefore, I am convinced this is not hardware related.
At this point I am thinking I need to reinstall OS X Snow Leopard to undo whatever Tinker Tool damaged. Is it possible to just replace the USB drivers in OS X without reinstalling everything?
