Extreme difficulty with simple program.. Help appreciated

Ok..I'm currently attempting to make a menu driven program that will end up calling on an earlier developed method in order to find the smallest, or largest number from an array. Unfortunatly my teacher rarely explained anything and i am finding this more difficult than it should be. I have the menu created, but am wondering how exactly to make the two arrays within the two methods.
can anyone start me out on the methods to find the smallest int and the largest int?

So you want to find the largest int in an array?
How would you do it by hand?
Imagine you have a row of boxes, labeled 0-N on the outside with numbers inside them, and someone tells you to find the largest number inside any of the boxes. How would you do it?
Simple, trivial, precise step by simple, trivial, precise step.
If you can write those instructions clearly and precisely in English, and if you understand Java arrays at all (http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/java/data/arrays.html), then coverting your English to Java will be trivial.

  • What Is Wrong With My Program Help

    This Is The Assignment I Have To Do:
    Write a Java program that prints a table with a list of at least 5 students together with their grades earned (lab points, bonus points, and the total) in the format below.
    == Student Points ==
    Name Lab Bonus Total
    Joe 43 7 50
    William 50 8 58
    Mary Sue 39 10 49
    The requirements for the program are as follows:
    1.     Name the project StudentGrades.
    2.     Print the border on the top as illustrated (using the slash and backslash characters).
    3.     Use tab characters to get your columns aligned and you must use the + operator both for addition and string concatenation.
    4.     Make up your own student names and points -- the ones shown are just for illustration purposes. You need 5 names.

  • Please help me with simple program

    Can someone please write a simple program for me that opens up a webpage in the center of the screen , with a set size, and then asks the user where they would like to click on the screen. Then once the person clicks it asks how many times they would like to click there, and then once they enter the # the program opens up the webpage (in the center at the same spot as before, with the same set size) and automatically clicks on the predesignated spot , and then closes all open internet windows, and keeps doing it for however many times the person chose. PLEASE HELP ME WITH THIS!!! If you could, please post the source code here. Thank you so much to whoever helps me!!!!!!!

    If it's not to learn, then what is the purpose of
    this project?well, if it's not HW and its not for learning java, then why the hell would anyone like to have a program that may open a webpage and then repeatedly click on predefined place...
    let me see...
    now if he had asked for program that fakes IP as well, then i would suggest that he tryes to generate unique clicks, but now... i'm not sure... maybe just voting in some polls or smthing... though, i would not create a program that clicks on the link or form element, but rather just reload url with given parameters for N times...

  • Lol, im a newbie. Completely new. Simple programming help, getting started.

    Im completely new to programming, and i want to just figure out how to make a program that shows a bit of text, and just an about that shows an icon and a bit more text. Thats it for now. I figured out how to use Interface Builder to make the interface i need, i also figured out where to put the main.nib file and also how to turn a folder into an application, i just need to know how to make the other files. If there is a tutorial for the very basics of making a form and making it into an application, sorry i didn't find it. Any help appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Hello,
    you simply started with the second step before the first: A .nib file is part of a program, and not the other way round.
    1.: Start XCode.
    2.: Use File=>New Project...
    3.: Choose "Cocoa Application"
    4.: Give it a name, e.g. "SmallApp"
    5.: In the "SmallApp" window, double-click the "MainMenu.xib" file
    6.: Now you're in the IBuilder - here you can edit the interface
    7.: Save & Quit IBuilder
    8.: Back in Xcode - press <cmd>-<Return> (for Build & Run)
    9.: Now you should have a working SmallApp.app

    Hi everyone,
    Please direct me to a FAQ or other resource, or help me with this problem:
    I want to create a text field (or similar container) that contains both ordinary text AND a URL/hyperlink in it. For example, the following text might appear in the text field:
    "I have many _pictures_ from my vacation"
    where the word "pictures" is actually a hyperlink to a web site, and the other portions of the string are simple text.

  • Help with simple program please!

    Hi. I am brand new to Java and pretty new to programming in general. I am writing a project for a class where we have to output the index at which a certain "target" string matches the "source" string. I'm stuck. I thought my code would make "compare" a string of length target.length()? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
    public static ArrayList<Integer> matches(String source, String target) {
    // check preconditions
    assert (source != null) && (source.length() > 0)
         && (target != null) && (target.length() > 0): "matches: violation of precondition";
    ArrayList<Integer> result = new ArrayList<Integer>();
    String compare = "";
    for (int i=0; i<source.length()-target.length()+1;i++){
         int count = 0;
         for (int k=i; k<i+target.length(); k++){
              compare = compare + source.charAt(k);
         for (int j=0; j<target.length(); j++){
              if (target.charAt(j) == compare.charAt(j)){
                   count ++;
         if (count == target.length()){
              result.add(i);
              return result;
    }

    I apologize, I am new to the forums and posted that code horribly. Here is the accurate code.
        public static ArrayList<Integer> matches(String source, String target) {
            // check preconditions
            assert (source != null) && (source.length() > 0)
                 && (target != null) && (target.length() > 0): "matches: violation of precondition";
            ArrayList<Integer> result = new ArrayList<Integer>();
            String compare = "";
            for (int i=0; i<source.length()-target.length()+1;i++){
                 int count = 0;
                 for (int k=i; k<i+target.length(); k++){
                      compare = compare + source.charAt(k);
                 for (int j=0; j<target.length(); j++){
                      if (target.charAt(j) == compare.charAt(j)){
                           count ++;
                 if (count == target.length()){
                      result.add(i);
              return result;

    I am trying to get a program in my CS1 course and am having a hard time, help.. this is what the prof wants>>> Your employer is developing encryption software and wants you to write a Java program that will display all the prime numbers less than N, where N is a number to be entered by a user. In addition to displaying the primes themselves, provide a count of how many there are.

  • Help with simple programming

    Hello everyone.
    First time posting, i hope someone would be able to help me out. There are 5 classes that i have to do, but i only need help with one of them. I've been stuck on this one pretty long and can't continue without it.
    Instructions:
    •     Has boolean data member face, either HEADS or TAILS.
    •     Has a Random data member flipper which is instantiated in the constructor.
    •     Class constructor has no parameters and randomly chooses the result HEADS or TAILS. (See method flip())
    •     Method getFace() returns the face showing on the coin.
    •     void method flip() randomly selects HEADS or TAILS.
    package coinflip;
    import java.util.Random;
    * @author Blank
    public class Coin {
        boolean face = false;
        int flip_coin;
        Random flipper = new Random();
        int getFace() {
            return flip_coin;
          Coin() {
            if (flip_coin == 0) {
                face = true;
            } else {
                face = false;
        public void flip() {
            flip_coin = flipper.nextInt(2);
    }i really don't know why the random isn't working. I hope someone would be able to find my errors and instruct me on how to fix them. I would be able to continue the rest of the classes as soon as i got this figured out.
    Oh and can someone teach me how to import this class into a main one? So i can test it out. This is what i have for it.public class Main {
         * @param args the command line arguments
        public static void main(String[] args) {
         Coin flipCoin = new Coin();
         for(int i=0;i<6;i++){
         System.out.println(flipCoin.getFace());
    }Many Thanks!

    Constructors are only executed once. What im confused about is:
    • Class constructor has no parameters and randomly chooses the result HEADS or TAILS. (See method flip())
    I thought i would flip() into the constructor. Mind helping me out on the whole class because it seems i am clueless about this whole class.
    Edit:
    public class Coin {
        boolean face = false;
        int flip_coin;
        Random flipper = new Random();
        int getFace() {
            flip();
            return flip_coin;
        Coin() {
           //flip();
        public void flip() {
            flip_coin = flipper.nextInt(2);
    }K i reread what you wrote about the constructor and method. So i placed flip() method in getFace(); because its being called in the main(it gives me random numbers). The problem now is following the directions.
    I just dont understand this description. • Class constructor has no parameters and randomly chooses the result HEADS or TAILS. (See method flip())
    What do you think it means.

  • Hi need help with simple program

    1 System.out.println("Input Number of Question: ");
    2
         3     inputQuestionNum = Integer.parseInt(input.nextLine());
              4
              5     if(inputQuestionNum>=10) {
              6          System.out.println("Error: Please try again"); //how to return to line 1
    7 else {
    8      System.out.println("ok");
    9 }
    Hi, i am new to java, how to make the program return back to first line when input is more then 10? I do not know how to describe my problem therefore i can't google for solution. thank you in advance.

    The usual approach is to use a do-while loop:Scanner input = new Scanner (System.in);
    int inputQuestionNum;
    do {
        System.out.println ("Input Number of Question: ");
        inputQuestionNum = Integer.parseInt (input.nextLine ());
        if (inputQuestionNum >= 10) {
            System.out.println ("Error: Please try again");
        } else {
                System.out.println ("ok");
        } while (inputQuestionNum >= 10);Ask if that's not clear.

    Dude , u r right ,,,but still its simple GUI issueI'm not sure why you are getting this impression. It's not a simple "GUI issue." Yes, you can simply create the GUI for this, but will it be functional? No. Furthermore, if it was so simple, why are you posting asking for help?
    For an instant message chat program, in addition to GUI programming, you need to know how client / server systems work and you need to implement one. A server should be running on one system and the client(s) will connect to it. The server usually maintains the buddy list and passes the messages to/from different clients. This presents several problems that you will need to solve:
    1. How will you develop a protocol between the client / server for communication?
    2. How will you authenticate users?
    3. How will you maintain the buddy list on the server (data structure, database, file)?
    4. How will you pass messages from one client to another (simple string message, serialized data object, etc.)?
    5. etc.
    Now, I'm not saying this is "impossible" so please don't take it that way. I'm simply trying to help you realize that there are a lot of factors to consider when developing this type of application.

    and for the "FTP?" ,,,its folder shearing as i said earlier every one of your friends can access it not FTP .....Talking about "folder sharing" is a whole other issue. programs were installed that slowed start up. My Disk resources were constantly being pushed to around 100% at all times. I did my best to figure out what had been causing the problem, but couldn't pinpoint it. I decided my best option was to delete all of
    the updates, and for the most part that worked. My mouse speed went back to normal, there were no more fishy background programs running, and I could actually launch applications without them moving extremely slow. This all lasted for about ten minutes, but
    then my computer began to slow again and the same issues emerged. I went to check my update history again and there were two updates that I had installed yesterday that it would not allow me to delete. I googled them both and found that one, KB3012199,
    had caused several people across multiple forums (including one here on microsoft that went unresolved) have had the same problem. I'm asking if anybody knows of any way to delete this update, or of a fix that has been released for it. This issue is a huge
    let down, never did I think that updating my PC would break it to this extent. Any help is appreciated.

    Unfortunately after you install this servicing stack update, you cannot uninstall it to revert to an earlier version of servicing stack update.
    Try to create new user account as an administrator (it may not help).

        <p>Since 2010 Barry has embarked on solo projects producing two entertaining half hour documentaries. 'Liberation', explores the world of pigeon racing in Dublin. This film was very well received at the Galway Film Festival 2011. More recently Barry produced 'The Gregory Seat', a documentary which follows Maureen O'Sullivan’s campaign to be elected in the 2011 General Election.</p>

              background: #666666;
              margin: 0; /* it's good practice to zero the margin and padding of the body element to account for differing browser defaults */
              padding: 0;
              text-align: center; /* this centers the container in IE 5* browsers. The text is then set to the left aligned default in the #container selector */
              color: #000000;
    /* Tips for Elastic layouts
    1. Since the elastic layouts overall sizing is based on the user's default fonts size, they are more unpredictable. Used correctly, they are also more accessible for those that need larger fonts size since the line length remains proportionate.
    2. Sizing of divs in this layout are based on the 100% font size in the body element. If you decrease the text size overall by using a font-size: 80% on the body element or the #container, remember that the entire layout will downsize proportionately. You may want to increase the widths of the various divs to compensate for this.
    3. If font sizing is changed in differing amounts on each div instead of on the overall design (ie: #sidebar1 is given a 70% font size and #mainContent is given an 85% font size), this will proportionately change each of the divs overall size. You may want to adjust based on your final font sizing.
    .oneColElsCtrHdr #container {
              width: 46em;  /* this width will create a container that will fit in an 800px browser window if text is left at browser default font sizes */
              background: #FFFFFF;
              margin: 0 auto; /* the auto margins (in conjunction with a width) center the page */
              border: 1px solid #000000;
              text-align: left; /* this overrides the text-align: center on the body element. */
    .oneColElsCtrHdr #header {
              background: #DDDDDD;
              padding: 0 10px 0 20px;  /* this padding matches the left alignment of the elements in the divs that appear beneath it. If an image is used in the #header instead of text, you may want to remove the padding. */
    .oneColElsCtrHdr #header h1 {
              margin: 0; /* zeroing the margin of the last element in the #header div will avoid margin collapse - an unexplainable space between divs. If the div has a border around it, this is not necessary as that also avoids the margin collapse */
              padding: 10px 0; /* using padding instead of margin will allow you to keep the element away from the edges of the div */
    .oneColElsCtrHdr #mainContent {
              padding: 0 20px; /* remember that padding is the space inside the div box and margin is the space outside the div box */

  • Difficulty with simple clipping mask project

    I'm just learning Illustrator (CS3) and have a simple project that I'm having trouble with. I'm hoping someone can give me a brief step-by-step.
    Basically, I'm making a cube and want to "insert" a photo into the front side of the cube using a clipping mask. I made the cube, which is slightly offset from "front facing" to give it a 3-D look, using the rectangle tool and some lines drawn with the pen tool. But when I went to add a clipping mask to the front panel, it wouldn't let me, saying something about you can't do that when the selected path is part of a group.
    Any ideas. This seems simple, but there's something I'm not getting, apparently.
    Thanks,
    Steve

    Assuming your cube is a cube and your photo is square, and the photo is embedded:
    1. RectangleTool: Click (dont drag). Enter 1 for both height and width. Click OK.
    2. DoubleClick the Rotate Tool. Enter 45°. Click OK.
    3. DoubleClick the Scale Tool. Enter 58% vertical, 100% horizontal.
    4. RotateTool: AltClick the bottom anchorPoint of the trapezoid. In the resulting dialog, enter 120°. Click Copy.
    5. Object>Transform>TransformAgain (Ctrl D).
    Now you have an isometric cube.
    6. Select the raster image and the face of the cube that you want the image on. Object>EnvelopeDistort>MakeWithTopObject.
    Or:
    1. Select the raster image.
    2. Effect>3D>Extrude&Bevel. In the resulting dialog, turn on Preview. Rotate the proxy cube, adjust extrusion depth as desired.
    Or:
    1. Drag the raster image to the Symbols Palette.
    2. Rectangle Tool: ShiftDrag to draw a square. Solid fill, no stroke.
    3. Effect>3D>Extrude&Bevel. In the resulting dialog, turn on Preview. Rotate the proxy cube, adjust extrusion depth as desired.
    4. Click the Map Art button. In the resulting dialog, navigate to the surface onto which you want to map the image and select the Symbol from the popup menu.
