Failed Boot Camp attempt - Restore OS X to O GB?

I was installing Windows 7 from an ISO image on a USB when the install failed.
On retrying, I'm directed to  'Remove Windows 7 or later version', as before, when the install failed for a different reason. This one is worrying though - rather than seeing the Windows 50 GB partition that I expected, I see only the following:
"Macintosh HD" will be partitioned as:
OS X
0 GB
I'm not clicking that! Anyone have any ideas?

Sorted with persistance and a few restarts. Odd one though.

  • Lost Mac OS X partition after failed Boot Camp attempt

Hi I have a friend who has the newest iMac and he attempted to install Windows XP through Boot Camp. He did the partitioning and installation, but when he booted he found out that WinXP has actually NOT been installed at all, while the installer said clearly that installation has finished.
Not only did he not have Windows to dual-boot into, he also seems to have lost his Mac partition! I tried to repair his disk using Disk Utility, but there's absolutely NOTHING showing that is available for repair.
This has haunted ME ever since because I wished to install Windows XP Professional through Boot Camp on my MacBook Pro now, but unlike my friend who did the Boot Camping while his Mac was brand-new and has no fear of reinstallation, I have like 100GB worth of beloved data which even my external harddrive does not have the space to fully back them up. I don't want to risk losing my own Mac partition in the process, so could anyone sort of tell me why do people lose their Mac partitions during Boot Camping?!
    Thanks.

Some times the only partition people seem to see is their OS X partition, not the FAT one that BootCamp Assistant should have created.
End result is the partition tables and user partitions are shot and support for XP's Master Boot Record is gone (Vista is happy with GPL and seems safer to me in dozen installs).
Backup. Don't do anything without one. TimeMachine AND a bootable clone (SuperDuper, Carbon Copy Cloner, even Apple Disk Utility's Restore). In BootCamp Assistant, there is an option to view, save or print out the pdf manual. Worth the read.
Maybe more online help? or even an on-screen "Do you want TimeMachine to update your files first before proceeding?" Always have two backups, one that is off-line. Use WinClone to backup FAT and NTFS. http://www.twocanoes.com
500GB drives and FW/USB cases are cheap enough and good investment.
    http://www.macsales.com/firewire/
Upgrading from Tiger to Leopard, and from BootCamp 1.x, seemed to mangle more than a few. Why people don't see their BootCamp partition and only 130GB or something designated for OS X? no idea.
And a few tried to install and wiped out small 128 MB "EFI" partitions that need to be before and after each user partition.

  • Failed boot camp install - how to remove windows partition?

    Hi There,
After a failed boot camp install, boot camp no longer sees (or can remove) a windows partition - Disk Utility can't seem to remove it and if I use:
    $ diskutil list
It shows up as partition 5 "Microsoft Reserved"
I also have a portion of free space that I can't seem to incorporate back into the main OSX partition - how do I remove the windows partition and make the drive a single OSX drive again?
Any help would be much appreciated
    Cheers

    - New Mac Pro
    - Installing onto internal 1 TB SSD
    - 10.9.3
    - Windows 8.1

Just incase others have this issue, this wasn't caused by using Disk Utility (Disk Utility couldn't remove the partition anyway) it was caused by repeatedly trying to format the Boot Camp partition using the Windows installer when Windows refused to install.
The solution is an Apple tech note (I can no longer find it sorry) that sates that no other hard drives besides the internal HD and the Windows USB flash drive can be connected while installing windows.

  • Failed Boot Camp Install of Vista 32 has broken one of my RAID arrays

Attempted to install Windows through Boot Camp on my Mac Pro, I have a RocketRaid 2320 controller card, RAID was built through Disk Utility. No redundancy, I built 2 separate 1.8TB RAIDs (4 x 500MB drives) in each of 2 separate cabinets. Windows install attempt brought up the HighPoint BIOS, then failed to install Windows and I got the well-known "Select CD-ROM boot type" message. Now, one of the 2 RAID arrays appears to be broken. Disk Utility still sees all 4 drives, but only recognizes 3 of them as a RAID slice with a GUID Partition Table. The other shows up as "disk5s1" with a Master Boot Record as the partition map scheme. While much of what was on this array was redundant with the second, I have a lot of work that was only on this one, so any help in how to fix and/or reconnect the drives of this array would be incredibly appreciated!

    1. I remembered RocketRaid 2320 don't provide EFI64bit from Highpoint website so you can't set boot camp.
    2. Does your Highpoint raid management utility(Highpoint engineer also called WebGui)
provide any message for your broken raid?I am also a Highpoint user, I give you some suggestion:
A.(1)If your WegGui in Manage--Array show your broken raid status is "Critical"and your bad HDD, please replace bad HDD then select Maintenance items of upper right corner of the page
(2)This will open the Array Information dialog box, select Add disk button to choose the replaced HDD then press "Submit", you can rebuild your RAID array.
B.(1)If your WegGui in Manage--Array show your broken raid status "Disable", you just can use one of Webgui function--"Keep old Data"(But it still have high risks to lose your data, it is the final method to use, I suggest you try the A method best.)
    (2) Select "Maintenance" items of upper right corner of the page, from the "Array Information" dialog box, select "Delete" button, and prompted a warning: the array of data will be deleted whether to continue, choose OK..
(3)Back to Manage--Array page, this time the array has been deleted, double-click the "Create Array"
button to display the page to create the disk. From the Initialization Method field select “Keep old Data”, the remaining arrays in strict accordance with the original set of parameters, the required attention parameters include: Number of RAID member disk, Array Type, Block Size, Sector Size.
(4)Click "Create", the initialization process will start automatically, RAID
recovery complete, prompts to create a successful, choose OK.
(5)See your volume in Mac Disk Utility if your data is recoveryed

  • Slow boot after failed Boot Camp

    Hi,
I have an iMac, where I installed a SSD in a Thunderbolt enclosure and booting OS X from it.
That made it insanely fast :-)
Now I tried Boot camp to install Windows on the internal HDD which failed. Seems to be a known problem when using Thunderbolt as bootdevice…
After this, when I boot, the system hangs about 20 seconds, before OS X boots (Apple logo with the line moving). Just black screen before the Apple logo comes.
Seems the system is trying to load a not existing Windows…?
Formatted the internal drive, but it didn't help.
How do I stop this delay?

  • Necessary to reinstall Boot Camp after restore?

I am fixing to back up and reinstall Leopard on my MacBook to fix a partitioning problem (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7524490#7524490). I got my MacBook from my university, and they didn't include the Boot Camp installation disk with the laptop (it was already installed when I received it). I have a Vista installation DVD and the Leopard installation DVD.
If I backup and restore Leopard, will I still be able to install Vista by running the Boot Camp Assistant in the Utilities Folder, or will I need to get a copy of the Boot Camp DVD?

    Hi Jbarber,
What is the Bootcamp installation disk? If you have the Leopard install DVD, everything needed for bootcamp is on that DVD. When you reinstall Leopard, Bootcamp Assistant will be there, and after you install windows, you just insert the Leopard DVD again to copy over the bootcamp drivers.

  • Unable to boot OSX after failed Boot Camp XP installtion

I hope someone can help me please!
    I used boot camp to partion 32GB and then inserted the XP cd as requested, my iMac restarted and XP began to install, it found 'unknown volume' c: and requested a NFTS format. This was all fine, however the installtion failed and enetered a constant failed/reinstall/fix cycle, after a few hours I rebooted the machine. I am not worried about the failed XP installation;
My problem is that on boot up now it does not boot into OSX, even when rebooting whilst holding the OPT key, it finds no bootable drives and just sits a the grey screen unless I put in the XP disk, which it will to install from.
Where has my OSX partiton gone?? Help please!

I've had nothing but problems with installations since 2 years ago when I got this iMac. When I had the problem before I got a new XP disc and no problems. This time I'ts not getting me into windows. There are different options when you choose to install windows: NTFS,FAT or leave partition with current files intact or something to that extent. I dont know what I should do. I tried "leave intact" and it formatted, installed windows, then went to black screen with error message saying "error reading disc". then i forced shut down the computer since it wouldnt read either keybord and the next time i choose to delete that partition(32gb) and install a fresh copy of windows on it with the "NTFS" option. same thing as before: formatted, installed, then black screen with error message saying "cant go into windows because of corrupt file "system file". This is a brand new copy of windows mind you so im a little peeved. I basically forced shut down again, and held down option and thank god it let me choose which partition to load into. im now on my mac partition. i set the startup to default to mac.

  • Boot camp services setup failed - Boot camp 3.3 update

Running Windows 7 Ultimate on a 2008 iMac with boot camp 3.2. When running apple update to install boot camp 3.3, after a reboot I get the following message from the installer: Boot Camp Services Setup Failed.
Sorry, After I posted I found the answer. I also had a logmein display driver and once uninstalled boot camp 3.3 installed just fine.

The BC Service is installed for any individual login (whether local or domain-based), which happens only the first time. The BC Driver Installer has no option to install the services for 'All Users'. This is expected behavior.

  • "No Bootable Device" after failed Boot Camp installation (Windows 8 - 1TB Fusion Drive)

On my new iMac /w a 1TB Fusion Drive, I tried to install Windows 8 (still technically unsupported) using the following method:
    http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2012/11/no-support-no-problem-inst alling-windows-8-on-a-mac-with-boot-camp/
Everything was proceeding just fine; I had Boot Camp copy all of the Windows 8 files (a legitimate, store-bought copy) to a bootable USB drive - a feature only available on new Macs running Boot Camp Assistant that don't come with an internal optical drive - and create a 102 Gb partition on the Fusion Drive. It then rebooted and was proceeding through the Windows 8 setup wizard as should be expected, but it couldn't modify any of the partitions on the Fusion Drive and wouldn't proceed. I accepted defeat and decided I would just wait until Windows 8 is officially supported before trying again.
Now, every time I turn the computer on, I get an error message saying "No Bootable Device...", unless I hold down the Option key and manually select "Macintosh HD" (the only boot device listed). I already removed the primary Windows 8 partition, but it hasn't fixed the issue.
I'm thinking that it's one of the 'hidden' partitions causing it to behave like this, or something wrong with the EFI bootloader, but I don't know how to proceed. Any thoughts on this?

I actually did try this (forgot to mention it), and it didn't fix the problem.
However, I just resolved it on my own, doing what I probably should have tried before anything else: running "Repair Disk" in Disk Utility updated all of the boot preferences as it should have.

  • Failed Boot Camp Install during Windows portion - how eject Windows CD?

New iMac owner (intel, 24"). I tried to set up boot camp. I set the partion to 32mb. Then loaded a new Windows XP Home (with SP2). The Windows install crashed (blue screen of death) and my only option was to power off iMac. Now every time I turn it on, it tries to load Windows. How do I get Windows CD out of the superdrive?

    Hi,
I am so glad I found your post. I tried to install Windows XP with BootCamp and was not successful. Anyway, I'm on a MacBook Pro with no no left mouse button. How do I eject the disk?
Also, can I shut down the MacBook with the error message "Press Ctrl-Alt-Del" to restart showing? I tried plugging in a keyboard but it did not work.
I see that you are in Germany and it is about 2:00AM there, so unless anyone else sees this message, I'm going to have to power down my laptop and see what happens.
    Thanks!

  • Failed Boot Camp installation

    Hi all,
I am trying to install Windows 7 from a USB drive using the Boot Camp Assistant, which also helped me setting up the usb device.
I followed the correct procedure, but right after partitioning osx freezed. At the next reboot, I had to keep alt pressed to boot into osx, as the default boot device was set to the empty Windows partition. Now Boot Camp is convinced that Windows is actually installed in the second partition, and only asks me if I want to uninstall it, thus removing the partition. I don't want this - it's very time consuming and I fear that the whole thing will repeat again. I just need OSX to reboot and recognize the USB disk, to be able to install Windows. This is not possible just by pressing alt at boot, and doesn't work from rEFIt. Any idea on how I could perform this? Thanks

Shut Down and then try rebooting with the Windows USB Installation drive you made attached to a USB port.
At the chime hold down the OPTION key and eventually the drive icons will appear.
Select the USB drive icon and hopefully you will be able to start the Windows installation.
If the USB icon doesn't work you may have a bad  Windows.iso burn and may have to reburn it.

  • Windows 7 Install failed - Boot camp partition to NTFS during formatting worked but when i clicked onto the 'next' button, it won't allow me to proceed any further. Help!

    Hi there,
I used the following manual (http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1583/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_ 10.7.pdf) in attempt to install windows 7 onto my mac but I get an error at Step 3 - windows installation process
I selected the BOOTCAMP partitioned drive as mentioned, clicked the advance options, and then reformatted that drive. What happens next is the drive changes name from BOOTCAMP to 'untitled'. I then tried to click 'next' button but it won't let me proceed any further and didn't state clearly why it couldn't go through (instead says to check the log file for reason why - but then I have not clue where this log file is located in as well!).
I had a look at that partitioned drive after to find that it is NTFS format (when I went back to OS x) so it appears that I am doing the right thing so that shouldn't be the issue..
Does anyone know what could be wrong? or what I should try to do next?
Could it be a format error because when i click onto the 'untitled' drive, there is nothing in there.

    Hi Steve1904,
So you have use the backup and Restore to restore your files from Windows XP to Windows 7 directly?
This should be considered not work.
If you would like to transfer files between Windows XP and Windows 7, you need another tool called Windows Easy Transfer.
See the article below if you would like to upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7:
Upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7
If possible, follow the steps there, then things should be OK.

  • I can't create a USB booteable Windows in Boot Camp Mavericks that actually boots

Hi everyone... I have an issue that is apparently very common and yet I haven't found a working solution... I'm trying to install windows 7 using boot camp on my iMac 8,1 it is running Mavericks... I've got as far as creating the windows USB but after boot camp attempts to restart the computer I get that "no bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key" message. My DVD unit is not working so I decided to try with the USB option but I'm stuck... I've tried using different (very different) pen drives (brand and sizes) but I always get this. I have also tried holding the alt/option key when I turn the computer on but it does never shows the USB, I've tried with different .iso files 32 and 64 bits, original and "questionable"... I hope you guys have a working solution for this. Thanks in advance, have a nice day.

Windows will not boot from USB if the Mac has an internal optical drive. This is something that Microsoft implemented.

  • ISO Boot Camp Windows 8.1 Install

    Hi,
I just purchased Windows 8.1 from the Microsoft Store as a digiital download. It came as an .exe, so using a friend's PC I installed the Media Creator program from Microsoft in order the generate the files needed to boot install from a flash. The flash drive I formatted in MS-Dos FAT 32 with all the files necessary. I opened Boot Camp Assistant to partition my drive for the Windows 8.1 install.
I booted my Mac from the flash drive, and the windows 8 set up program does work. I am able to punch in my serial number/product key, but after this it is unable to find an image to install.
I looked up that  creating an ISO from the files on the flash drive was the next thing to do. So I did that using disk utility, then told boot camp where the ISO was and to generate an install disk using another external drive I have. Each time it will format the new drive, and--although I have unmounted the ISO that is in My Documents using disk utility, as soon as Boot Camp attempts to copy the install files over, disk utility will mount the ISO again causing the process to not work (bringing up the error message "your bootable USB drive could not be created."
I'm really stuck. Any help would be amazing. I'm running a new iMac late 2013 on Mavericks, but I will be upgrading to Yosemite very soon. I hope upgrading the OS and boot camp will fix this, but who knows.

For Macs with built-in Optical drives, you will need to burn the ISO to Optical media and use the Optical drive.

  • Problems with re-doing a partition with Boot Camp 4.0.4

I have a 15" MacBookPro with a 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, about 6 years old.  3 years ago I installed a new hard drive (500 GB) and partitioned it to run Windows 7 (32 bit).  I've had issues with connecting to wireless networks and with bluetooth accessories, so decided to redo the partition and re-install Windows and drivers.  I used Boot Camp to restore the disk to one partition with Mac OS in extended (journaled) format.  When I tried to run Boot Camp again, I set the partition to 350 Mac, 150 Windows, and tried to install Windows 7.  I get this error message:
When I go to disk utility to format, it is not allowing me to determine any partitions.  This is what I see:
Any suggestions on how I can fix this?

It doesn't. You can leave XP and Vista there as is, as they were, you may be able to create a partition, and tell BCA you will install later. you can't use the BC 4.0 drivers though, that should still allow using your 10.6 DVD's.
