  • Failed to install VirtualBox Guest Addition on Oracle Linux 6.1

I can successfully install Oracle Linux 6.1 on VirtualBox 4.1. But failed to install VirtualBox Guest Additions with the following message: Building the main Guest Additions module [FAILED]. All other modules installed ok.

Actually you don't have do install the developer version. According to the documentation http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch04.html you will need to install gcc and kernel-devel packages. In case Oracle Enterprise Linux does not find the required packages, you either have to install them from a different source (e.g. DVD) or use Oracle's public Yum server located at http://public-yum.oracle.com.

  • Error target not found base-level failed to install the packages

Im trying to install arch on my Virtualbox VM and its just returning:
error target not found base-level failed to install the packages to new root
What do I do? I have selected the right mirrors, pinging google, my own VPS's and a few other servers and they all pinged fine. Any ideas on whats up? Think my VPN's IP has been blocked and thats why I cant download anything? I have tried pacman -Ssy and it worked fine but still no.

Please read the following and follow the advice included:

With that, be sure to clarify whether the typo was just here on the forum, or whether it was also in your original command.  If it was in your original command, that would explain your results.

  • Tutorial on installing Arch on VirtualBox

Hi everyone, this is my first post on forum. I have tried installing ArchLinux on Oracle VM VirtualBox 3 or 4 times, but every time I stumbled into a problem and had to start over since I didn't know how to solve it and googling didn't really help. So, first time i had a problem with X - it wouldn't start at all. After that, I somehow managed to get X up and running, but when I tried installing gnome some wierd errors occured and it wouldn't install, after which X stopped working as well. So, next time I managed to install both X and Gnome, but the problem was that Gnome3 wouldn't run normally, it started in Fallback mode, and it was just ugly, like some kind of Frankenstein made by merging Gnome2 and Gnome3, and it didn't really work well. So, now I'm asking if there is some kind of tutorial that covers all the aspects of installing Arch Linux with some kind of desktop enviroment (I don't really care which one for now, as long as it is explained and it works) but on VirtualBox, since I have noticed that the process of installation isn't actually the same. Any help is appreciated. Oh, and sorry if there are some grammar mistakes, English is my second language.

Ok, so I've followed the Begginer's guide on wiki, as well as VirtualBox guide and these are the errors that I'm getting when I try starting X using startx command:
(EE) AIGLX error: vboxvideo does not export required DRI extension
(EE) AIGLX: reverting to software rendering
(EE) VirtualBox USB Tablet: failed to initialize for relative axes.
Upstream error most likely. If you google you will find quite a bit of information on it.

  • Use native ArchLinux within VirtualBox - X Server Problems

    Hi everyone!
I followed the Wiki Entry here:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Vi … ical_Drive
to use the natively installed Arch within a VirtualBox on Win 7.
So far, I can boot into Archlinux - but the XServer cannot start, because there are some Errors, that the XServer failed to load the NVIDIA Modules.
The Wiki entry also mentions this kind of Problem and suggests a solution to use a second xorg.conf for usage with the VirtualBox.
But right now I do not really have an idea how to load an individual xorg.conf?
And how this xorg.conf should look to use the VirtualBox graphics card?
ArchLinux is installed on a Notebook with a NVIDIA Quadro NVS 3100M and I'm using the proprietary NVIDIA drivers (if I boot natively in Arch, which works fine).
Also I would be grateful for any other solution, if someone has successfully started a natively installed Arch in VirtualBox and has the proprietary NVIDIA driver installed.
    Thanks in advance!
    Kind regards
    PhiGamma

    Hello everyone!
There was a NVIDIA specific xorg config file I forgot which was needed for brightness control. I renamed the file and then it was possible to start the X-Server within VirtualBox. But there seems to be a problem with the VirtualBox 3d support and the NVIDIA drivers (eventually due to libgl?). I switched to Nouveau then and everything works fine. I can use 3d support in both cases, VirtualBox and native (I unfortunately need the 3d support for Gnomeshell...).
But personally, I would prefer the NVIDIA Driver, because of the power control facilities which Nouveau lacks right now.
Does somebody know a way to use the NVIDIA Driver an has 3d support within VirtualBox?
    Thanks in advance!
    Kind regards!

  • How to solve the issue: "Failed to install NtCreateSection monitor" etc

I am a user of VM VirtualBox Manager
I have been searching for the solution for the above issue.
But I got nothing until now 22nd August 2014.
But after several trying several settings, I succeeded to start VM VirtualBox Manager without getting "Failed to install NtCreateSection monitor"
So I just want to share with others, and perhaps what I did above can solve the issue for others with similar problems
    Here it is:
    1. Try to change the display resolution to AUTOMATIC
    2. and / or try to disable the extension packs
As for me, I only did no.1 only.
And also when I did that, I was still disabling my avast.
(Here I'm trying to give a solution of an issue, without following other's thread.)
Actually for me this was an idea, and thx to BluShadow, I know this thread belongs here as a discussion topic.

I received the above msgs just now (2nd time after yesterday as 1st time), and I could get rid of the error msg by doing the above steps once again.
The important thing is to change the display to another option.
eg. if your current display is "Automatic" then change it to "Hint" etc
if your current display is "Hint" then change it to "Automatic" etc, then you can start the virtual machine / HDD again.
Hope I can help you guys with the same problem.
    Thx,

  • [SOLVED] external USB HDD fails to install arch w/boot device ERROR

I've been working on installing arch linux via an external USB harddrive (specifically seagate free agent go 320GB) for 1 week now, and everytime I failed - until TODAY! thankfully I found this post, where user Dieter@be references this link, which displays BUG ID#17231 at the top titled "Can't boot LiveCDs 2009.08 (/dev/archiso doesn't show up)". the bug report states ::
I can't boot the LiveCDs 2009.08, neither netinstall nor core.
When it tries to access /dev/archiso it shows these messages:
:: Waiting for boot device ...
    Waiting 30 seconds for device /dev/archiso ...
ERROR: boot device didn't show up after 30 seconds ...
    Falling back to interactive prompt
You can try to fix the problem manually, logout when you are finished
    ramfs$
reading further thru this bug report, I found a very insightful post by Heiko Baums (cyberpatrol) where he says the following, and I quote ::
Problem found. The link /dev/archiso wasn't created.
    After
    ramfs$ cd /dev
    ramfs$ ln -s sr0 archiso
    ramfs$ exit
    it continued booting correctly.
And sg was also loaded after this. ;-)
as you see, the bug report was for the CD version, not the USB version - yet, my issue with the USB bootdisk was the same, (no matter which boot disk I tried = netinstall, core, .img, .iso, etc) meaning I got the EXACT same error = "ERROR: boot device didn't show up after 30 seconds ..." ! well, I figured that I'd try one of the new fancy ISOs found @ http://build.archlinux.org/isos/ - specifically I use/used archlinux-2010.03.04-netinstall-x86_64.iso.
upon running Unetbootin from windows 7, and choose to install the ISO archlinux-2010.03.04-netinstall-x86_64.iso to my first partition on my USB harddrive (that first partition being FAT32, and had already been set as bootable previously), that completed successfully. I rebooted, and choose to boot from USB drive, the ISOlinux bootloader came up as normal, I choose DEFAULT and off it went.... sure enough, it errored out at the same place as listed in the bug report ::
:: Waiting for boot device ...
    Waiting 30 seconds for device /dev/archiso ...
ERROR: boot device didn't show up after 30 seconds ...
    Falling back to interactive prompt
You can try to fix the problem manually, logout when you are finished
    ramfs$
this time though, I issued the following 2 commands ::
    ln -s /dev/sdb1 /dev/archiso
    exit
from there, EVERYTHING worked as it should!
to recap: the solution for me was create a symbolic link pointing /dev/archiso => to my partition which held the archlinux netinstall (which is where I told Unetbootin to install it to)! done and done. I felt this needed to be posted here, as I could not find this solution after MANY google searches, archlinux wiki searches, forum searches, etc. honestly, I think it would be prudent to have this tidbit of information added to the Install from USB stick archwiki page as a side note to those that may run into this issue.
this is not the FIRST time I have run into this problem with a USB install of archlinux, but this is the FIRST time I found a fix! thanks to all the great posts I reference here, without this information I dont think I would have been able to install archlinux on my new alienware m11x laptop.
    -peace-
PS: no amount of rootdelay=XX  nor pmedia=usb  nor usbdelay=XX would work in my above attempts either.

FAT16 here. Parted Magic sees my USB drive as sdd. I tried your way and surprise, surprise, it didn't work.
    ln -sf /dev/sdd /dev/archiso
    mount -t vfat /dev/archiso /bootmnt
    mount : Invalid argument
I thought maybe you meant mount -f vfat /dev/archiso /bootmnt instead. I tried it too, it resulted in a kernel panic.
What else can I try besides installing from a IDE/SATA CD drive ? Because this issue is NOT solved. At least not for me. Wonder if "archlinux-2010.04.05-netinstall-i686.iso" from the here will solve it (really hope so).
SOLVED IT HERE (with yet another image): http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=93645

  • Eth0 fails after installing and operating ath0 using ath_pci

Hi everyone, thank you for taking a look at my problem here.
I'm operating on an older IBM Thinkpad A22M.  When I first install ArchLinux, eth0 works fine.  I can dhcpcd into my network and browse the internet without a problem.  Once I add this WG511T PCMCIA card, and attempt to connect with it, eth0 fails and nothing I can do will bring it back.
I am operating no network managers and I do not do
    sudo ifconfig eth0 down
before doing anything at all with the ath0.

Of course, taking down eth0 and then bringing it back up does not work.  I have already made sure that the ethernet cable and the router both work by plugging in another PC.  I've looked at just about everything I could find to figure out what would cause this kind of issue, but I have found little in answers.
Again, thanks for taking a look.  If you have any useful resources or reads or an explanation as to what I'm doing wrong, I would take them gratefully.

What are you using to connect to the network itself?  IE netcfg2, wicd, knetworkmanager... ?
Try using either the "mii" or "ethtool" application to gain some info perhaps?  I've used ethtool to re-connect seemingly dead connections.  Some people find the "dhcpcd" client to be a pain and quirky with their hardware, so often I see others recommend using "dhclient" instead.  Give that a try perhaps, and check the netcfg2 page on the arch wiki for troubleshooting ideas if you have time.
Stupid question but what is the Irda port used for in your case?  I know its infrared but I've never seen that port actually used for something even on the Thinkpad line of lappys, where its most commonly found.  Maybe its conflicting somehow?

  • [SOLVED] Failed to install override security policy

    Hi,
I am trying to install Arch linux in UEFI in a dual boot setup with Windows 8.1. I already have the Windows OS installed, but every time I go to boot from the Arch installation CD I made using the latest .iso download (2013.12.01), I get the following:
    ERROR
Failed to install override security policy: (14) not found
I hit return on the "OK", (the only available option), and the error reappears once again. After I hit return for a second time, the installation quits and I am returned to a normal Windows boot. This error happens right at the very start, I literally tell my computer to boot from the CD drive and then straight away the error appears.
I have tried the solution suggested here:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=169354
(i.e. replacing the bootx64.efi with the loader.efi file (but renamed of course), in the EFI/BOOT/ directory of the iso), and I have tried using other versions of the iso (specifically 2013.10.01) as well as re downloading and re burning the most recent iso. All of these have been to no avail.
I am running an ASUS Sabbertooth 990FX (Rev 1.01), which I know to be an UEFI board. Also, I was able to install Windows 8.1 in UEFI just fine.
Any thoughts about what the problem may be?
PS: Merry Christmas to you all!
    -Ryan
    --- SOLUTION ---
Download the Arch Linux variant of rEFInd, from http://www.rodsbooks.com/refind/getting.html. Then, install as per the instructions for you particular operating system and needs; follow the following: http://www.rodsbooks.com/refind/installing.html.
Reboot. Next time your computer starts, after the POST is completed, instead of booting into your normal operating system/boot loader, rEFInd should load instead. It will search for bootable media and operating systems automatically, and present you with a list of options. Choose the one corresponding to your CD/DVD/flash drive (depending on your installation medium). It should then boot in UEFI.
Once you are prompted with a command shell, type the commands:
    # mount -t efivarfs efivarfs /sys/firmware/efi/efivars # ignore if already mounted
    # efivar -l
If a list of variables is displayed, then you know you have succeeded in booting the installation media in UEFI!
    Hope this helps some people...

Lone_Wolf wrote:Buckeye, Machione did you try disabling secure boot ?
    Thanks for the response Lone_Wolf.
I had a good old rummage through the "UEFI BIOS setup" for my motherboard (ASUS Sabertooth 990FX rev 1.01), and found no option to either disable nor enable Secure Boot, which I found rather odd, so I did some searching online and found this quote:
"I've recently bought an ASUS Sabertooth 990FX, which is a uefi
    motherboard.
    Secure boot cannot be ENabled."
    from: http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.linux.mageia.user/8143
Intrigued, I then done some more searching, and came to opening up Windows System Information, to see if I had Secure Boot enabled or not already. The result (as shown in the below screenshot), is that Secure Boot is "Unsupported", which means that my "PC does not support Secure Boot or is a Legacy (BIOS) installed Windows". Since I am running Windows already in UEFI, this means that my motherboard indeed does not support Secure Boot, and hence there is no need for me to disable it.
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/3to4x7pcxctzz … enshot.jpg
I will send a quick email to ASUS to confirm this finding, but it certainly seems like Secure Boot is not an option that I have, and hence I have no need to disable it in the first place.
    Thanks anyway for the response,
    -Ryan

You don't need to install both grub and syslinux. You configure grub in "Configure Bootloader" so this step is unnecessary:
    -Install Syslinux:
    pacstrap /mnt syslinux
This next step doesn't configure the kernel, it creates an initramfs (see the Beginners' Guide):
    -Configure Kernel:
    mkinitcpio -p linux

EDIT: there's a ticket currently on virtualbox's bug tracker about this issue. http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/3511
Wow, that's a serious bug in that ticket! But it's about the host (windows) rebooting because the guest "does something", that seems to be something completely different then the guest hanging during installation.

  • [SOLVED]UEFI boot gives 'failed to install override security policy'

Hi, newb here who has hit a dead end quite early in the process of installing Arch.
When trying to boot Arch into EFI mode, it says
'failed to install override security policy'
Of course I did my research and it seems that only three other people on this planet have had the same problem, and their solutions do not work for me.
    http://superuser.com/questions/615142/u … ity-policy
Overwriting EFI/boot/bootx64.efi with loader.efi enables me to see a menu where I can choose from booting Arch, UEFI shell v1 or UEFI shell v2. Still, selecting Arch results in a blank screen with two grey bars at the top and bottom of the screen, so not really not much help.
I'm not a UNIX nor an EFI wizard, so please bear with me. I'm a Windows user with some anecdotal Linux knowledge (I have installed Ubuntu countless times, wanted a bit of a challenge this time) who wanted to make the switch to the Linux ecosystem, but this error prevents me from doing so. I also tried to install rEFInd as suggested here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=174734
But I seem to be unable to boot into any UEFI shell v2, it's also printing the errors:
    ASSERT_EFI_ERROR (Status = Not Found)
    ASSERT C:\svn_code...and so on )
My Windows installation is on BIOS/MBR, so I cannot install rEFInd manually using Windows, and I also cannot use the v1 UEFI shell because of the lacking bcfg command. I don't know how to procede from here. My board is an AsRock P67 Extreme4 Rev 09 with a 2.10 EFI. This board doesn't even have Secure Boot if I'm correct, I also searched every possible submenu of the EFI for an option to disable Secure Boot, but haven't found anything.

I presume you are trying to use gummiboot?
Please post the contents of /boot/loader/loader.conf and also your gummiboot configuration file for your Arch system (if you are not using gummiboot post the config. files for whichever boot loader/manager you are using).
Load the Arch live ISO, mount all your partitions and `arch-chroot` into your system and then post the output of:
    lsblk -f
    # parted -l
    # efibootmgr -v

  • Install archlinux from another linux system...

I have a dedicated server and I want to install archlinux in it.
I have the option to do a netboot to access to my server from the "outside" and I installed debian several times usind debootstrap from the netboot.
I've tried to do the same with arch following this guide http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ins … ting_Linux , but I've stumbled upon some problems...
    1) I can't copy pacman binaries to the bin folder, since it is read-only
    2) when I try to run pacman from its temp folder I get this:
    root@rescue:/# /tmp/archlinux/usr/bin/pacman.static -Sy base -r /newarch/
    :: Synchronizing package databases...
error: failed retrieving file 'core.db.tar.gz' from mirror.lividpenguin.com : No address record
error: failed to update core (No address record)
error: failed retrieving file 'extra.db.tar.gz' from mirror.lividpenguin.com : No address record
error: failed to update extra (No address record)
error: failed retrieving file 'community.db.tar.gz' from mirror.lividpenguin.com : No address record
error: failed to update community (No address record)
error: failed to synchronize any databases
    What should I do?
    Thanks in advance.

you have to install the required files, like mirrorlist to /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist

macbook pro, all other updates have installed just fine, except for 10.6.2
I get this in the log:

nothing is mounted (i rebooted before applying). not sure why it's giving that NFS error. it's consistent tho.. if i reboot and try the manual install of the patch, I get the same error.
after the failed patch "installed" it left my sound not working... so far everything else appears to work. any thoughts on fixing this are appreciated. i ran diskutil and 'fixed perms' and 'verified disk' ... patch still fails.

Try reinstalling the patch. If you get all the way through the installation, then see if your sound works. If not, then I suggest you do a repair install of Sno by installing Sno over Sno as in an upgrade install. Such an install, while usually very safe, still is an install so be appropriated backed up if you proceed.

  • Failed to install Creative Cloud desktop error code 1 Windows 8.1

I just recently tried to begin a trial of creative cloud in order to get access to photoshop. I really need photoshop for my school because of how powerful it is and the tools is offers. A couple weeks ago I tried to download and install creative cloud for windows 8 64-bit, and the download begins, but once it reaches around 50%, it raises an error message saying "We've encountered the following issues: Creative Cloud desktop failed to install (error code 1)". I was having problems with the internet at the time so I just naturally assumed it was the cause. So I went ahead and gave it a couple of days before I tried again. When I tried again I received the same error message at the same time. I continued to look around for a solution and trying it everyday but I have had absolutely no luck with it, and honestly am getting quite frustrated with it. I have looked everywhere for a solution, I tried the adobe clenup tool, I have checked to make sure I don't have any previous versions of adobe products on my computer, and even tried installing it as an admin in safe mode, and still nothing. I have no idea what to do next, but I know that I have to get ahold of photoshop, one way or another, and it must have the professional tools included in the creative cloud edition. Please tell me there is a simple solution and I have been blind this entire time. If there is no solution, can someone direct me to another software similar to photoshop that has access to the plug-in dDo? (I am in game development and have heard how powerful dDo is and have been dying to use it. I have also been anxious to get photoshop, but it doesn't appear to be possible without the creative cloud desktop app).
