Family sharing redownload unavailable

My son was using my Apple ID on his iPhone. Now family sharing is available I reset his iPhone and he uses his own Apple ID. For most apps family sharing works fine. But for Instagram, a free app, when he goes to my purchases it is not there even though I have downloaded it. When he searches for the app  on the App Store it shows the cloud download icon but when we try and download we receive the message - Redownload unavailable with this Apple ID either because it was bought by another Apple ID or the item was refunded or cancelled. Does anyone know why a) the app does not show on family sharing and b) why he cannot download from the App Store.

Thanks for answering.
Actually trying to buy it via the App store is the only way.
Since this app is marked as not shareable, it doesn't show up on my wife's iPhone under the list of downloadable apps already purchased by another family member (me) .
When, on her iPhone, I click on the price (FREE), that 's when it gives the popup saying "Redownload unavailable with this Apple ID either because it was bought by another Apple ID or the item was refunded or cancelled."
According to other sources on the web, the app developer has to accept Apple's new monetary terms and conditions - even for a free app - before that app can be marked as shareable.
It seems unreasonable that if I install an app that is not eligible for family sharing, other family members cannot install that app at all, even if they are willing to pay the purchase price.

  • Family Sharing results in "Redownload Unavailable with This Apple ID"

I recently converted from having my Apple ID on all of our 5 devices, to setting up separate accounts.  I just got a new iPhone 6 for my wife tonight.  I didn't restore form backup, because she wanted to start fresh, and not have every App on the phone.  So when I started downloading Apps, I got and in setting it up, I started downloading Apps and after installing 10 Apps, I got the following error message:
Redownload Unavailable with This Apple ID
This redownload is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled.
    Anyone else having this issue?
    Come on Apple.  Seriously?

For what its worth i've been having this issue too and have followed all the advice i could find, none of which worked. However the only apps we were having trouble with were those make in the update list (and the app's info page on the App Store) as "Non shareable". If the Family Sharing lead has "purchased" (and the "" are there as there are free apps in the list *cough* Twitter, Dropbox, Kindle *cough*) any non shareable apps then they need to mark them as hidden (tap and swipe the app to the left in the list of apps in the purchased section of the App Store app and then tap hide. Now, the non family lead who wants to buy/download the previously downloaded app needs to go back to the purchased section, select the Family Sharing leads name to show their app list (this seems to be important to refresh the information) then search for the app in the App Store, then instead of the cloud with download arrow there should be the "Free" or "Price of app" box, which they can tap to install and provide password/tap the touch ID scanner/ however you authenticate your purchases in that App Store. This worked for me and was the only thing that worked and seems to be the obvious answer in hindsight - however the distinction between whats shareable and whats not is very strange - there's free apps, that are and aren't, apps that login to web services that aren and aren't, apps that have in app purchases that are and aren't and paid apps that are and aren't its confusing so if you get this error, check the status and try this. Then complain to the app developer. I'm thinking of raising a bug report with some of the apps i've found as its confusing and there seems to be no reason for it.
    Good luck!

  • Family sharing is not working

So today I downloaded IOS 8 on both devices, Ipod 5th generation and Iphone 4S. they both have different accounts. i set up the family sharing on both devices and they were both set up. i went on the Ipod 5th generation to download the previous purchases from the Iphone 4S and all the apps show up but when i try downloading it it comes up with a "redownload unavailable with this apple ID" then it says this download is not available for this apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled. i now it was not cancelled or refunded because i play it on my Iphone 4S and it works. then i tried a different paid app and it does the error again saying the same thing. please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Same issue.  Annoying.  I was looking forward to this feature more than any other in iOS 8.
I was able to manually sync the applications from iTunes to the phone, but not via the phone only (the iCloud app store download).  I get that "Update Unavailable with This Apple ID" error "because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled."
One of the applications I was able to install successfully via iTunes wouldn't update either, so I logged out of my spouse's account to see what would happen when I tried to update it.  It just spun and spun and never updated.  I restarted the phone, tried again (with her ID) and it gave the error.  Logged out and into my account, and was able to update.
If the error is caused by application developers not "allowing" Family Sharing, I'm afraid most old applications which aren't being updated anymore will never work.  Again, this sort of deflates the value of the "feature".
Either this is a poorly implemented feature with a lot of bugs, or Apple misled us into believing this feature was something that it isn't.

  • Cannot Download Instagram/Redownload Unavailable with this Apple ID

I have two Instagram accounts, one personal, one professional. I.e., two separate/different Instagram IDs and two different passwords for each Instagram account.
I have two cell phones, one for work (iPhone 6+) and one for personal (iPhone 5s). If it matters, the phones have two separate wireless company accounts, as well.
Each phone has its own iCloud/iTunes ID.
I purchased the iPhone 5s last May 2014, and the iPhone 6+ in December 2014. Thus, all of my personal accounts were set up on the iPhone 5s, first.
I have the two phones set up on Apple's "family sharing" via iTunes, in order to access and share some of my data, calendars, etc.
I have Instagram set up on the iPhone 5s. I can login in to either of my two Instagram accounts on the 5s, but I do have to login/logout of the app and reenter each ID and password for each Instagram account.
I want to install Instagram on the iPhone 6+ that I use for "work"  with my professional Instagram account. When I try to download the app to the iPhone 6+, I get the message that "Redownload Unavailable with this Apple ID." Please see the attached image.
I have tried different methods, but I cannot download Instagram to the iPhone 6+. Instagram says to go to Apple Support (https://help.instagram.com/126971294119253/) and Apple Support, as far as I can tell, considers this a 3rd party app and it isn't their problem).
I have looked at some solutions -- such as logging out of iCloud and iTunes on each phone, and then logging back in and downloading the Instagram app, but it appears that I will lose the data I have on the iCloud for each phone, if I login/logout of iCloud and iTunes on each phone.
    http://appletoolbox.com/2014/09/family-sharing-working-redownload-unavailable-ap ple-id-fix/
    family sharing is not working
This is completely stupid -- surely individuals within families have their own Instagram accounts and post from their own phones. And this is a free app!
Any suggestions as to how to download Instagram to my iPhone 6+ that don't involve losing any data?
    Thank you!

Thanks, Kappy, that made the lightbulb go off.
    Here's what I did.
    (1) Synced my iPhone 5s with iTunes.
    (2) Uninstalled the Instagram app from the 5s.
    (3) Re-synced the 5s with iTunes both to my laptop and the iCloud, since it now does not have Instagram on it.
    (4) On the iPhone 6+, loggedout of iTunes that has my "work" AppleID.  (Settings ==> iTunes & App Store ==> Apple ID: <apple ID here>; tapped on Apple ID:, then an image came up, and I logged out of that Apple ID, which is my "work" Apple ID.
    (5) Logged into the iPhone 6+  iTunes & App Store with my personal Apple ID and password
    (6) Downloaded Instagram.
    (7) Set up Instagram with my "work" Instagram userid and password.
    (8) Logged out of my personal AppleID for the  iTunes & App Store on the iPhone 6+, and logged back in with my "work" Apple ID.
    (9) Re-installed Instagram on my iPhone 5s and synced it with iTunes using my personal Apple ID.
    (10) Set up Instagram with my "personal" Instagram userid and password.
I don't know if I needed to sync and re-sync the iPhone 5s that way, plus uninstall Instagram on it. I may have added extra steps here, but better safe than sorry.
I do think that the key to solving this problem was logging out of the iTunes & App Store with my work AppleID, and the logging back in with my personal Apple ID to download the Instagram app, then logging out from my personal Apple ID and logging back in with my work Apple ID.
On each phone, I had no problem setting up each of the separate Instagram accounts. It was just getting the Instagram app to download to the second phone set up with Family Sharing.
I don't understand why I had to do it this way, but I guess Instagram only wants one owner of the App. Weird. I have not had to do this with any other apps I have downloaded under my "work" account and phone that I also have on my "personal" account and phone. For some of those, I use the same account ID; others, like Instagram, are separate.
I hope this solution helps someone else, too.

  • Can't download free app purchased under another account once Family Sharing is enabled

I "purchased" Onedrive for iPhone years ago. Then I turned on family sharing on my daughters phone. She couldn't update Onedrive because she hadn't purchased it, so I deleted it as I had for others and tried to download it again. However, this fails with the error message:
"Redownload Unavailable with This Apple Id
This redownload is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled.
    OK"
I tried finding it from her phone under my purchases, but it is not listed there. However, on my phone, it does show up as a purchase. I'm completely baffled on how to work around this. Anyway to force a repurchase of a "free" app?

If you are using the Purchased tab where your purchases are listed to re-download it then you shouldn't be charged. If you are being asked to enter your credit card details when trying to download it via that tab then that will be for account verfication purposes - you are currently in the country where your account is based ?

  • Family Sharing Bugs - Anyone else getting this

    Hi all,
Like many of you, I excitedly reset my entire family's universe of iPads & iPhones to take advantage of Family Sharing when iOS 8 was launched.
We previously shared one master id for iTunes and iClouds (sharing photos, storage and iTunes purchases), with separate IDs for iMessage.
I have managed to set up Family Sharing but I have not managed to get it to work.
From the "master" account, I have successfully invited 2 "subsidiary" accounts on 2 separate devices.  I can see the sharing has been switched on both the "master" device as well as the two "subsidiary" devices in Settings > Family for each device.  Changes to the toggles here (Parent / Guardian and Share Purchases) can be successfully toggled on and off with a corresponding change in the other devices so at least these settings appear to be updating correctly.
    However:
    - I cannot see any of the shared music in either the Purchased section of the ITunes store (message is: This iTunes account is not set up to use Family Sharing)
    - I can see apps purchased by other Family Share members ("master" or "subsidiary") but cannot update or download any apps (message is: Redownload unavailable with this Apple ID because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled, or Update unavailable for the same reason)
Solutions I have tried (none work:)
    - Switching each device on and off
    - Signing out and back in again on iCloud and iTunes on each device
    - Toggling "Automatic Download"  on the APP switch on and off in Settings > iTunes & App Store
    - Toggling "Parent/Guardian" on / off in Settings > Family for each member
At a complete loss - any help appreciated.

I have very similar problem, but it appeared only after few days after installing most apps to my  wife's iPhone. When I first installed, all worked as it should but then all of sudden I started getting the "Redownload unavailable with this Apple ID because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled". Recently, it also shows "Unable to download, your family must have a valid payment method.", which is ridiculous since I as family organizer am purchasing apps/music normally.

  • Family Sharing Woes for My Kid

We tried installing a free app (Khan Academy) on my kid's iPad after setting up family sharing. Actually it wasn't completely set up because we don't use credit cards and my debit card wasn't sufficient. Now she can't download the app apparently because I had it on my iPad and deleted it. The error message said "Redownload Unavailable with This Apple Id. This redownload is not available for this Apple ID because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled."  That was the first time we tried to DL to her device. I removed her from family sharing and still get the same message. The app still has the Any advice?

You can edit the age. On an IOS device do as follows:
    1. Click Settings
    2. Click iCloud
    3. Click on top where it shows you have the user you want to update birthday on logged in.
    4.  Click on Password & Security
    5.  On top it shows birthdate. Click on it. Wait!!!
    6.  It should ask you to answer two security questions you set up for that child. It will then go back to screen before if you answer questions correctly.
    7.  Click on birthday again and it will allow you to edit the date!!!
It even tells you that you can edit the year if previously set to incorrect date. I'm guessing Apple understood that parents had to fudge the way they had it before. And they got smarter with ios8. Not easier to find, just smarter.
    Hope this helps!

  • HT201060 Family Sharing problem

I have added my daughter to family sharing, and she can update all but about six of the family apps on her phone. We can't figure out why she can download and or update almost every app, but not about six of them. She gets an error that says "Redownload Unavailable with This Apple ID"

Unfortunately, some content isn't family shareable.  I believe it's up to the publisher to decide whether to allow it for their content.  To find out if a particular app is shareable, locate the particular app in the app store, click on details and scroll down to the place where it indicates whether the app is shareable. Here is the related Apple support article: Which purchased content can I share using Family Sharing - Apple Support
Another possibility is that the app is "hidden" in the primary Apple ID account.  For help with that, check here: iTunes Store: Hiding and unhiding purchases - Apple Support
    Hope this helps.

  • Redownload unavailable with this apple id

After leaving Family Sharing we have tried to download Skype.  Then we get an error message that says "Redownload Unavailable with this apple ID."  We learned that with most apps like Facebook and twitter that give you this error message you can go to settings > general> then select that app > then sign out of the old apple ID from there.
But we can not find skype.  Not sure what to do.

    update:
I'm still having this issue with all my kids AppleID accounts since I updated all our devices to ios 8.0.2
If an app was previously purchased/downloaded by any member of our Family Share group only a icloud download icon shows up next to those apps.
There are no other options to download. I'd have to disconnect them all from the Family Share group in order to get the FREE icon to display.
In the past they would get a prompt stating a particular app was free and that it would now be associated to their own AppleID. This message doesn't get displayed anymore.
I'm still playing email tag with Apple support in order to get this resolved! Very annoying!

  • Family Sharing is very buggy...at best

Ive tried for hours this weekend to get Family Sharing working on our iPhones and iPads but not much luck. It will work for some devices and some apps but not all. I've been through every known "solution" and not had repeatable success yet. I still get Unable to share, unavailable with this ID,  etc etc etc. Can someone please tell me how a family member can download an app under their own ID that has been previously downloaded under the Organizer ID? For instance, if the app does not allow sharing but the Organizer has purchased it, how can family members purchase when it only shows a cloud icon...meaning already purchased? These details have been overlooked on this feature. I would stay away from Fam Sharing until the bugs are worked out.
This feature is half-baked and very disappointing. I am surprised that this was ever released by Apple.

I don't think so. Unless it's in the settings, there's not much that can be done.
are they using wifi on the train? If so, maybe switching to cellular. There are devices like the Mifi, which is a battery operated portable wifi hotspot that they can connect their device to.
If the wifi on the train is solid, I know I've had issues using certain hotspots. For example, my yahoo mail simply will not pull down via the mail app if I'm on some AT&T hot spots. But if I go in via safari then it works. So if the signal is good, maybe using a different way can help.
Or maybe looking for a mail interface that isn't apple's. There are others in the app store that may have better function or more control.

  • Authorize a Computer for Family Sharing - Is It Possible?

For the past seven years or so my family and I have been using the same AppleID for all of our purchases, and all of our computers are authorized with Home Sharing to one account. With the creation of the Family Sharing option - and issues we've been having with all of us using the same iCloud/AppleID - we're wanting to set it up, but my concern is with the content we've already downloaded. When I change the AppleID on my phone to my new one and then add myself to the Family Sharing Account, will I have to redownload all the music and apps I've already downloaded to my phone? Will I have to deauthorize my computer from the iTunes account that has all of the purchased content on it, and reauthorize it with my new account in order to get my content to sync to my phone? If I reauthorize my computer to an AppleID on the Family Sharing account, will all of the content available within the Family Sharing account be made available on my computer? I haven't been able to find the answer to any of these questions in the information archives Apple has posted. Has anyone done what I'm asking about and can let me know what happens?
For reference, I have an iPhone 6 running iOS 8, and an HP Notebook running Windows 8.1 and the latest version of iTunes.

At this point, this only works through Notifications on the Mac and iPad:
Request and make purchases with Ask to Buy - Apple Support
Maybe using the Notification Center on your Mac is a good alternative for using e-mail.

  • Why does family sharing prevent one ID from having multiple families, it's not that uncommon for one person to have multiple families they're involved in.

I was very disturbed to discover that Apple's family sharing only has the capacity for one family per ID. People nowadays are part of multiple families; whether through marriage or divorce, and those families don't necessarily want all their purchases shared with the other people. Why can't they just allow people to have multiple families, I understand there might be some complications with payment methods, but you could just let them choose which organizer they want to ask permission from, just like they would in a real family.

I own the movies and I want them to stay in my iTunes library basically forever.
But in both cases the file name no longer shows in the movie list, so I don't know how to re-download it from the Cloud.
iTunes prefs > Store > Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases.
This will show all your iTunes purchases in your library with a cloud icon down arrow. Click the icon to redownload or click on Play to stream without downloading.
Also see this , -> Download past purchases
and techncially, you don't "own" the movie, You simply have a license to use it.
Yet the first thing iTunes does when you hit the delete key is tell you that it will remove the movie forever from all devices and the library.
Actually, no it does not tell you that.
FYI: You should keep copies of all yoru iTnue spurahses as the labels/movie studios/copyright owners can pull their product at anytime and it won't be available to redownload.

  • What happens to app content/data with Family Sharing?

    Hello -
My girls, 10 and 12-yrs old, have been on my Apple ID for years.  We've muddled through by me just turning off and on certain permissions, but I'd like to considering Family Sharing and getting them their own Apple IDs.  I just got an iPhone 6 and we're passing the iPhone 5S to my eldest daughter, so it's an opportunity to do this now.
I've read all the instructions of setting up the kids in family share and how that works - I get that.
The question I have is whether everything has to be "recreated" on her phone?  So, if I set up a new Family Sharing account for her and activate it on her phone, will all of the apps and content disappear, so we have to then redownload every app?  In that case, won't the apps be "empty" of data?
So, for example, she and her friends have made a bunch of Video Star videos that live in the app.  I'm trying to figure out - if I set her up with a new Apple ID on Family Sharing, is all that data going to be gone?
Or, any progress in a game (like Smurfs Village that literally has been played over years - or can she sign in as me from the Game Center ID with that one to have it be the same)?
    Thanks for your help -

If you re-download the apps under a different ID, you'll lose all saved data.
