Fascinating automated screen capture tool

Hello Java Experts
THE SITUATION
============
At least 4 times a year, I get email advertising where they seem to do a screen capture on the home page of my web site, scale it down to 20%, insert it into a template and send it to me.
I guess they are getting all URLs from a domain registry crawl.
then they send out a web crawler that does an automated screen capture.
QUESTION
=========
I'm really curious to know how to do such an automated screen capture with java.
If anyone has any idea how to implement such a solution , I would be glad to hear it.
I know java can be programmed to download all the HTML Code and even the gif/jpg files of the <img/> tags.
but how would you automatically, capture and scale it down to about 20% of the original size and save it.
Stev

you said "I'm guessing java wouldn't be the best way to go. "
I'm under the impression that java can do everything. The trick might be to find out how to do it.
I
'll propose one really bad and slow way to do it.
There is already a swing component that will translate HTML code (that was gathered) into the actual web page.
Now I believe there is a Robot API that will perform clicks of the keyboard and mouse and simulate an actual user at the computer.
In this case , you could make it simulate the buttons to do a print screen .
You could use the robot API to make it paste the result some place and do whatever transformations and saving of the object needed.
I realize this is a bad way to do it because it is so slow. But it is automated.
However I am under the impression there is a way to do this effectively and very fast with java.
I'm guessing it would be using the new nio package in java 1.4

  • Is there a screen capture tool in Photoshop Elements 9?

Is there a screen capture tool to take a screen shot of a window in another application or of Web page?

Thank you for telling us about ALT+PrintScreen.  I'm 44 and I've been using computers since I was 13, have built my own computers, have built websites and dabbled in programming and I didn't know that.
This reminds me of 1997 when I still had my first PC I bought off the shelf: a Compaq Presario 433.  The father of a friend of mine was a Linux nut back then and he worked for Texas Instruments.  So computers were his life.  Well, I remember when he screwed up the end of some long command line he had typed into his PC.  I think he said, "Argh, I gotta type that all over again."  I said, "No you don't."  I stepped over and held down the F1 key (I think it was; it's been a long time) and his command line quickly reappeared letter by letter so he just had to backspace the error at the end.  He gawked at the screen and I didn't have to look at him to know he was blushing.
There are probably a lot of other ALT and CTRL key combos I'm unaware of, but would find useful every day.  Like how to make this message post without having to grab the mouse and hit "Add Reply".

  • Localization - Automated Screen Captures?

    Hi RHelpers,
I'm wondering how many of you localize your projects, and if you do, do you use or know of any tools to automate the screen capture process? Our RH projects contain thousands of images of our UI in them and we simply can't keep up with our standard process of getting the localized .htms back from localization and then trying to get screen captures on the backend. We support 15 non-English languages and will likely add more. There's just no way to keep up without such a tool. Just wondering what you all use or if your translators take care of the images along with the text.
    Thanks,

I have since recalled the tool I was thinking of was an authoring tool and the problem I had when I looked at it was I couldn't write the topics the way I wanted and I couldn't use it as a tool to extract the images. I might have used it just for that purpose.
Take a look at http://www.indoition.com and download the PDF there. It lists lots of tools and may you will find something in that.

  • Automated Screen Capture

I was wondering, can anyone think of a way of automating a method of obtaining a screen capture for a list of websites? E.g. let's say I have a list of URLs and I want to get a screen capture of each webpage, does anyone know how I might go about doing it quickly?
The only way I could think of doing it was using the Robot package to swtich to a web browser, take a screen capture, and then process the image.... I was just wondering if anyone could think of a neater way of doing it?
    many thanks

  • Automated screen captures in emulator tests

    Hi all
I'm created a "virtual user" to run and test my midp apps by running them in j2meunit environment which in turn is run in the toolkit emulator. All this is run in my Ant build.
I would like from my j2meunit tests to be able to create screen captures for my documentation. I do this routinely with my J2SE applications when run in JUnit or JFCUnit but I really like to be able to create these documentation screen captures (screen shots or screen dumps) automatically.
Could anyone help me or point me in the right direction?
    Thanks in advance!

  • How can I keep my screen captures sharp when exporting to PDF?

I've tried using a screen capture tool that allows me to snag in the exact size, plus I changed downsampling to none in the export settings, but the screen captures still look blurry in the PDF. What else can I do to keep them looking sharp?
My client insists on using InDesign to lay out this presentation and wants a sharp looking PDF to send to clients.

Ok, there's the problem. You turned off effective compression of the photos.
I don't know how, or whether, you can have different compression for different image classes in InDesign. That's really a question for an InDesign forum.
    Good luck!

  • Lion, Quicktime Screen-capture, and Photoshop

I've used Quicktime's screen capture tool to create Photoshop video guides in the past and it's produced really high quality, high fps results in a small file.  However, since I've upgraded to OS X Lion, my entire computer is brought to its knees during a Photoshop recording session.  As soon as I hit record, boom - Photoshop becomes really choppy and it's almost impossible to create a decent video.
Could anyone else here with Lion do a quick test to see if you get the same results?  Just open up a Photoshop file, open Quicktime, go to New / New Screen Recording, and see if you're able to use Photoshop without any performance drop.
I'm running CS5 on a dual quad-core mac pro with 12 gigs of ram.  It's about 3 years old, but I shouldn't be running into a performance hit like this.
Any feedback on your own experience or tests would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

Under OS X "Lion," every screen capture tool I have (Snapz Pro X, Screenflow, Layers, iShowU HD Pro) will no longer capture a DVD frame—if the DVD is being played by Apple's DVD Player. The resulting screen cap shows a "transparent" window. VLC still works in that regard. I've also noticed that the iTunes app no longer has a free-floating video window, which was always my preference. Videos now show within the boundaries of the iTunes window, or full-frame. One more note on Apple DVD Player is that invoking full-frame playback will slide in a new "space" with a background similar to that seen on iPads or behind the Desktop Widgets.
I realize capturing DVDs is not what you're trying to do, but all of the above indicates a complete change to the way OS X handles any streamed video. I have yet to make a test, but I suspect that output-to-NTSC through monitor ports may also be inhibited for certain things; Apple may be plugging the "analog hole" with software. My guess is that whatever background routines are responsible for this may be sufficient to slow the frame rate of your tutorial captures—in the same way that heightened security at airports now significantly slows boarding procedures.

  • Screen capture error, using "ctrl command shift 4"

when I captured the screen using "ctrl command shift 4", the captured picture is cracked. but when using "command shift 4", the captured picture is fine.
    like below
    How can I fix it?

    use CMD  Shift 4
better still use a FREE screen capture APP like ducklink
    http://www.ducklink.com/p/free-screen-capture-tool-on-mac/
Best one is the APP SnapNDrag I use all the time.

  • Motion: Can I make an animated screen capture ?

    Hello,
I made an application, it draws mathematical curves with animated parts.
I made a screen capture with snapZ, but the output is not acceptable, the smoothness is gone.
Can I make it better with Motion ?
    Uwe

best screen capture tool, smooth as silk even on older Macs (like mine ) is
    ScreenFlow
not cheap, but offering tons of more handy features, to create/record/edit/enhance any screen-recordings ...
in Motion, I would consider to create a 'multi layer' file of your graphics in any 'paint'-application (I recommend Pixelmator), save it in psd-format, import 'All Layers' to a new Motion Group. This gives you a maximum of control for each 'element' on the screen, applying motions/behaviours etc etc.

  • Issues recording audio during a screen capture demo

I'm working on a computer with a Windows 7 OS and Captivate 5. I have "stereo mix" enabled as default recording device.(Realtek high definition audio). My task at hand involves demonstrating a video captioning tool, so I need to be recording the video's audio as I step through the process of creating the captions in a web based environment. I must admit that what I am trying to accomplish works easily with other screen capture tools (even free tools) but I would really like to be able use Captivate 5 for this project and others upcoming that require the same functionality. As a last resort, I've also tried adjusting the audio settings within the project (selecting the "narration" option as shown) but I'm not having any luck getting the results I need. I'm really hoping that it's something simple I'm just missing, and that  forum experts can nudge me in the right direction... Thanks very much for your input.

    OK, I understand now.
But with Captivate, the bad news is that just playing a video file on the screen, and capturing what you see with Captivate will not result in the audio from the video file being captured at the same time.
Captivate records audio via the microphone channel in your computer.  What you can do as a possible workaround is turn on your PC audio and place a USB microphone near your speaker to pick up the audio from the video.
Another trick I have sometimes used is to purchase a cable with two male 1/4 inch jacks on each end, then plug one end into the microphone port and the other end into the headphones port on your computer.  Be careful to turn the sound down low on your volume control and do some tests to find the appropriate setting where it will record the sound at a good audible volume.
    Hope this helps.

  • What screen capture software is available to Mac users?

I'm considering buying a Mac to produce online presentations.
I've seen screen capture software from Camtassia and Screenflow.
Camtassia seems most popular with PC community but what do they (we currently) know?
I've heard that there's a screen capture tool within Mountain Lion is that true?

Thanks Grant. It sounds as though I can safely buy a Mac without worrying about software

  • Google Earth Screen Capture

Does anyone know of a way to capture the effect of Google Earth zeroing in on a location. For example, I am editing some hunting footage from an area in Texas and would like to show a graphic zooming in from a shot of the entire US to a much smaller area. I can get it on my screen in Google Earth, but can I capture that and pull it into FCE?

I did this for free using a screen capture tool called Copernicus that allows you to capture a quicktime video directly from selected portions of your screen. It was tricky because the frame capture rate was only 2 frames per second with the CPU load of google earth doing its thing. I got around this by changing Google Earth's flying speed in its preferences->touring tab. I was able to crop out the text at the bottom of the frame by sizing the google earth window to larger than 640x480 and then capturing only the center portion of the window. If you want to get 720x480, you need to make sure your window width is greater than 720 wide, which oversamples the vertical. This gets sampled down when you take it to video editing.
If you want to spend money on it, I seem to remember somewhere in the on-line Google Earth Plus or Pro documentation seeing something about being able to record Google Earth output directly to a video file. This would obviously be a lot better quality, without all the frame-rate handsprings I had to go through. I guess the money must have been more than I was interested in spending at the time.
PS. For an extra cool effect, start with the entire globe visible, and flick it west to east to get the world spinning, then click your location to get the fly-in to start. Its tricky to get it spinning at a slow enough speed, but the result is quite nifty.

  • Automated screen/window capture with Applescript?

Is it possible to automate screen capture in an automated, non-interactive way, using Applescript?
I know it is possible to use the terminal screencapture command in an Applescript to capture the whole screen, but the screencapture options to either select an area of the screen or a particular window require user interaction at run time to select the screen area or the target window.
What I need is to be able to specify - in the script itself - the area of the screen to capture, or the name of the window to capture, and have this happen without user interaction.
Is this possible? Are the undocumented ways of passing area or window information to screencapture? Or some other Finder/System way of doing it?
(with some research I found references to an app called FreeSnap which is allegedly scriptable - but it had been removed from all the usual sources as well as the original developer site. If there's no direct Applescript/Finder/System way to do the above, are there any third-party scriptable screenshot Apps which can do it?)
    Thanks.

    Hi brendan
    Here is the code:
set tmpPath to ((POSIX path of (path to desktop)) & "screenpic.png") as string
do shell script "screencapture " & quoted form of tmpPath
    delay 1.5
    set this_file to tmpPath
    try
    tell application "Image Events"
    launch
    set this_image to open this_file
set {docWidth, docHeight} to the dimensions of this_image
    crop this_image to dimensions {400, 200}
    save this_image with icon
    close this_image
    end tell
    on error error_message
    display dialog error_message
    end try
    Hope this helps
