Fast Recovery Area space utilization

Hello!
I had an issue with my FRA getting filled consistently lately and it would give me all sorts of issues. I checked the alert.log and found this:
ORA-19815: WARNING: db_recovery_file_dest_size of 6815744000 bytes is 100.00% used, and has 0 remaining bytes available.
You have following choices to free up space from recovery area:
1. Consider changing RMAN RETENTION POLICY. If you are using Data Guard,
then consider changing RMAN ARCHIVELOG DELETION POLICY.
2. Back up files to tertiary device such as tape using RMAN
BACKUP RECOVERY AREA command.
3. Add disk space and increase db_recovery_file_dest_size parameter to
reflect the new space.
4. Delete unnecessary files using RMAN DELETE command. If an operating
system command was used to delete files, then use RMAN CROSSCHECK and
DELETE EXPIRED commands.
1) I checked the retention policy in RMAN it was : CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 1; # default
2) I dont have tape backup option
3) I kept increasing the db_recovery_file_dest_size and it just keep growing
SQL> show parameter db_recovery_file_dest_size

4) I did fix it by manually deleting files through the OS ( yea I know rookie mistake) , crosschecking, then delete expired archivelog all;

PCT_SPACE_USED_NOT_FREEABLE

I dont know what to do to avoid this in the future, I changed my retention policy to a window of 7 days but I have no idea if that will help. I dont want to keep taking manual action , I want the files to get deleted automatically.
Help me out please! Any ideas?

    I have oracle 11.2.0.3.0 in Windows 2008 server 64 bit , i have Database with ASM and i have enabled Flashback in my database ...
    I have assigned 8GB for db recovery area size , in that i have Rman backups , flashback logs, archive logs ..
    My doubt is oracle automatically free space in case of no free space in FRA , i have checked for RMAN backups , automatically my obsolete backups are deleted from FRA but i have the doubt about flashback logs ...my flashback retention period is 1 day..
    Is oracle automatically deletes the obsolete flashback logs in case of no free space in FRA aur manually i need to delete?

  • Fast Recovery Area with 2 databases

    Hey, I have to create 2 databases on my 2 nodes RAC ( 11gR2 on SLES11)
    Currently I am configuring the second database.
    Now I am confused regarding the FRA and DATA Diskgroup I created.
    Do I have size those diskgroups now ?
    eg
    I set up the FRA size for my first db to use the whole diskspace for the diskgroup
    My Data is 10G and FRA is 20G big.
    Do I need to modify the settings for the first db now - to the half of the size
    or ist Oracle intelligent and will calculate both values for the max sizes ?

    We've had the experience that Oracle 'thinks' the FRA is full resulting in a database hang, while no redo-logs could be archived.
    This while the disk was not full at all.
    So I don't think Oracle is intelligent enough to start looking for the usage of the physical diskspace. It just used the size of the FRA in the spfile.
    Therefore it is recommended to divide the available space in two.
    The above experience we've has were with Oracle 10.2.0.3. Much may have improved with newer versions, so I can be mistaking here

  • Proper layout of datafiles, archivelogs, flash recovery area

    Hi all,
    Sorry a bit of a newb,
    Have a question about how to layout my db files.
    My understanding is that control and archivelog files should be multiplexed to a separate disk than the datafiles.
    Is this also true for the flash_recovery_area?

    Thanks for any help.Lose your control file or your redo file, and you have a problem. Therefore, in a professional environment, the control file and redo logs need to be protected by multiplexing to different physical drives (not different partitions on same disk). One of those locations can be the same DASD as the database files.
    Archivelogs should be bounced from online to nearline to offline storage. These days 'online' is inside flash recovery area. If you are paranoid, you can send archivelogs to multiple destinations (multiplex), although some form of disk protection (RAID 1 ... or 5 - ugh!) should be sufficient.
    Flash Recovery Area can be inside ASM or on regular file system. If in ASM, consider using either RAID 1 under ASM and external failgroups, or normal failgroup mode to allow the system to do it's own RAID 1 equivalent. If on regular file system, use standard disk protection (RAID 1 or 5) to do the protection.
    Oracle uses the SAME (Stripe and Mirror Everything) philosophy, so separating Fast Recovery Area (new name - used to be Flash Recovery Area in the ancient days of Oracle 10g) from database files is not needed.
    Highly recommend you read the first chapter of the Database Concepts Manual and the first chapter of the Database Administrator Guide to get used to the docs, adn then use that as a pringboard (via table of contents) to the sections that answer your question.     If you simply delete the archivelogs at the OS level, the database will never know about it and it will continue to think the destination is full, based on records kept in the control file.
    For regular housekeeping, you need to be doing something similar to this in rman:
    run {
      backup archivelog all not backed up 1 times tag='bkup_vlnxora1_arch';
      delete noprompt archivelog all backed up 1 times to device type disk;
    run {
    delete noprompt obsolete;
    crosscheck archivelog all;
    delete noprompt expired archivelog all;

  • Flash recovery area: archivelog file directory modification time

    So, the current retention policy is three days. It is 24/1 today - the archivelog directory from 19/1 should have been deleted by now, but it has not been.
    The modification time for the archivelog directory 2008_01_19 has a modification time of Jan 23 23:30 2008.
    Why is this? How can this be investigated? Does anyone have any suggestions?

    From 2 Day DBA:
    Even after files in the flash recovery area are obsolete, they are generally not deleted from the flash recovery area until space is needed to store new files. As long as space permits, files recently moved to tape will remain on disk as well, so that they will not have to be retrieved from tape in the event of a recovery.
    What is the current space used in the FRA and what is the FRA disk limit ?

  • Flash recovery area issue. I can not open the database??

    I am using oracle 11.2.0 .1.0 on windows
    when i tried to start the database I got the following error.
    ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel
    I clear out all information in Trace file. I cleared out all operating system level audit trails. then i deleted archivelog files using operating system level delete. still my database is not opening???
    I tried to start this using RMAN but got the same error. now i have deleted the files from flash recovery area how can i let oracle system to know that those are deleted and there is enough space. Rman does not execute crosschek commands at mount state of the database?
    Need solution.

  • Flash recovery area, need help!

    Hi! I have some problems with Flash Recovery Area. I use Oracle 10g.
    So,
    1) I tried to change Flash Recovery Area Size from 10 to 15 GB in Enterprise Manager, see: http://my.jetscreenshot.com/2677/20111129-mxmb-117kb
    Applied changes and shutdown DB. After I started DB and see the Flash Recovery Area Size then I can see that it is old one - 10GB and free space is with "-" sign, see: http://my.jetscreenshot.com/2677/20111129-bwlw-101kb
    What I am doing wrong?
    2) Can You pleas explain, what to do step by step with example, how can I delete Flash Recovery files USING ENTERPRISE MANAGER, what steps I need to do? Because my HDD is almost full.

    1) Mybe I can't change recovery area size because there somewhere area size is limited to 10gb, because I do not understand why always after restart there is 10gb... :(You are missing something when you bounce, Make sure you have started with same SPFILE, You have to load the same PFILE/SPFILE when you performed changes.
    2) How can I schedule a RMAN job to cleanup? Can You give me all necessary steps to do?You can schedule RMAN archive delete jobs.

  • Flashback Recovery area Full in Oracle 10g

    Before the flashback recovery area is full our
    Archive destination is USE_DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST
    Our DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST =/S01/app/oracle/flash_recovery_area/
    We got the Error:- ORA-00257
    Inorder to resolve the error we changed the log_archive_dest_1='/S01/app/oracle/db/archive'
    now the archive destination is changed to /S01/app/oracle/db/archive
    Archive logs getting generated in the above directory from now onwards.
    In the mean time i moved all the files from /S01/app/oracle/flash_recovery_area/
    to diff directory.
    But the below query gives still the space used is 3935.27 MB, where physically there are no files in /S01/app/oracle/flash_recovery_area/
    When will these values in the query update. Is there anything i have to do to reclaim the space 3935.27 MB (in the query below). Now after reclaiming the space, i want to use the Flash Back Recovery area (/S01/app/oracle/flash_recovery_area/) for the archive logs, like a switchback to where we are initially. How to reclaim the space ? How to switch back archive logs to Flash Back Recovery Area (/S01/app/oracle/flash_recovery_area/).

    In UNIX style environments you often don't see reclaimed space until the database is restarted. Backup the database and archivelogs and the flashback area shoudl take care of itself in future. If not, you can always delete obsolete archivelogs manually by using the DELETE command in RMAN.
    To cleanup now, first you must tell RMAN that the files you've moved are no longer available:
    crosscheck archivelog all;
    You can then delete the obsolete archivelogs using the following RMAN command:
    delete obsolete;
    I'm assuming you use RMAN for all your backups :)

    our db_recovery_file_dest_size = 4G after this is filled, when i am logging in as a user, archiver error ORA-00257 has occured. I want to avoid this error coming every time, is there any way to automatically delete some of the files when it (db_recovery_file_dest) is full, like deleting very old flashback logs inorder to retain space & avoid that error. Experts share your experience...

    Exactly which of the eligible files will be deleted to satisfy a space request is unpredictable. The rules governing the selection of specific files for deletion are likely to change between releases and are dependent upon your configuration. The safe and reliable way to control deletion of files from the flash recovery area is to change your retention policy. If you wish to increase the likelihood that files moved to tape are also retained on disk to minimize expected restore and recovery times, increase the flash recovery area quota.

  • Deleting the flashback recovery area and the files (Oracle 10g on Solaris 8

    We have a dev. db which is small about 3 gb in all (crd files). for this I had enabled flashback and also put it in archivelog mode. then the db_recovery_file_dest_size grew to 3 gb. since space is an issue, I turned off the flashback feature. (by the command: ALTER DATABASE FLASHBACK OFF;)
    Tomorrow I will also make it into noarchivelog mode. My question is: it is having lots of archived logs (may be 3 gb or more) in the flashback recovey area. What is the correct syntax to delete them? There is a warning in alert log which says that use RMAN delete command but I am not aware of exact syntax.

    You can use variations of delete. (As you say there are many files, incude noprompt)
    Once the database goes into noarchivelog mode, the archived redo logs are essentially worthless. They would be useful/necessary if you wanted to restore the database to a point in time prior to going noarchive, but if you don't need that, the two ways you are looking at deleting (depending how you go about it) are at the OS level and within the database (what Oracle knows or remembers about the archived redo logs and where they were sent to via the arch process). The RMAN approach is cleaner, assuming you were using that.

    Delete unnecessary files from the flash recovery area using the RMAN DELETE command. (Note that if you use host operating system commands to delete files, then the database will not be aware of the resulting free space. You can run the RMAN CROSSCHECK command to have RMAN re-check the contents of the flash recovery area and identify expired files, and then use the DELETE EXPIRED command to remove missing files from the RMAN repository.)

    I'm running Oracle 11.2 on Solaris 10 on a couple of HP Proliant DL 360 servers.
    Both servers have 72G of physical RAM with swap space set to 16G on both of them.
    Server A has only one database and total memory free = 30G.
    Server A

    Recently I got an OEM alert that my swap space on server A had crossed the 95% threshhold on one of the servers.
    But when I checked the server, I found that the average swap space utilization was 97.45.
    In fact, what actually happened was my swap utilization momentarily dropped below 95% and then returned back to its normal range above 95% which caused the alert to be triggered.
    So this made me wonder why my swap space utilization was so high on server A, or is this just normal for Solaris (v.10).
    Checking with server B, I see that my swap utilization is only at 63.6% (even though server B has much more physical memory in use by the two databases than server A).
    Main question is why is swap utilization so high on server A, which is configured the same as server B and with less physical memory actually in use.
    Next question is should I be concerned.
    When I check vmstat, I do not see any paging in or out or blocked processes.

    Realize that SWAP is purely an OS facility; which is 100% external to Oracle.
    The OS send little used or idle processes into SWAP when RAM is scarce resource.
    The fact that SWAP is being used is not a Bad Thing, in and of itself.
    as long as vmstat shows that BI+BO > SI+SO I would ignore the Chicken Little warnings.

    I would like to use flash recovery area only for flashback database feature, which means, flash recovery area will store only flashback logs.
    I dont want to use that file system for any other files, like archive log files, database backups, control file copies, multiplex redo log, etc
    is it possible? I want to use this feature only for flashback database option and hence i dont want to disturb any existing configuration in my database
    including backup jobs. Is it required to store archive redo log files also in flash recovery area to use the flashback database feature?
    I certainly can't afford to have a copy of entire database in this file system as size of my DB is more than the flash recovery area file system I have.

    Okay, well in that case you can use RMAN and push the backups to the tape drives. FLB logs would be stored on the FRA.
