Fat32 Shared from Mac - Folders Always Read Only?

I have a Mac Book Pro running 10.5.8 with a FAT32 Bootcamp Partition. I set up Windows Sharing so a computer running WIndows Vista can share this FAT32 volume on my Mac. The basic networking works fine, and I can open, edit and save C files in the Microsoft Visual C++ environment I'm using.
But, the compiler attempts to create temporary files during compilation and this fails. It complains that the folder is write protected. This is substantiated by the fact that when I show the folder properties for the folder in question, it shows "Read Only" in the "Attributes" section.
Thing is, using Notepad, I can create a new file and save it on these "read-only" folders without any errors.
So I'm mystified. Any thoughts on why the compiler wouldn't be able to create the temporary files?
Looking forward to a solution,
Mark

I am posting back here because I discovered the cause of the second problem mentioned in the above post. IE: the problem of misbehaving folders in windows.
First, some background. The folder structure is rather large and complex, so I created it using applescript and a text file with outline levels. Unfortunately, some of the outline titles (which became folder titles) ended in a space.
Apparently windows does not like folders (files too?) to end with a space. While this never affected my Mac, when I transfered the data and structure to the PC it went haywire. I did notice that the duplicate folders were not identical as I first thought, but rather were generated without the trailing space(s). Now it is just a matter of removing all the trailing spaces and it appears that windows can handle the folders.
However, every folder I put on the PC still says it is read only and I can't seem to change that. Any help?

  • Is ical "sharing" always read-only?

I assist an MIT professor who uses the ical software, and I use Windows XP. I need the ability to edit his calendar by "suggesting" a meeting that he can either accept or reject and that is clearly "from" me. Is this possible? If it is, how does the software deal with issues of synchronizing--i.e., if I suggest a mtng on a calendar that hasn't yet been synced up with his Palm that day, will his calendar automatically catch new conflicts when it is synced?
I read the thread posted about users sharing a synced calendar, and it doesn't sound promising. Any new ideas much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Isadora

The answer to your basic question is that an iCal that is published by its originator is always read only to those viewing it - either on the web or as a subscription in iCal.
If you use Outlook, you could try making your suggestions in the form of meeting requests (perhaps in a dedicated calendar on your 'side'?)
There's an explanation about what happens at the iCal end here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iCal/2.0/en/wr41.html
I can't be much more precise because I don't have the Windows equipment to verify how well this works.

  • PC FORMATTED iPod read by MAC & PC?  MAC formatted iPod read only by MAC?

Is this how the formatting issue works? I'm looking to buy an iPod for a friend who (I think) has PC.....
Since I'm a mac person, I want to buy the gift, load some music on, and ship it off to the lucky recipient....but if they have a PC , will it be recongnized once it's plugged in?
    Any info would be helpful.

Yes, that is how it works.

Okay, unless you restore your iPod while you're on the Mac, I believe it will still be formatted for a PC.
(You will not need to restore the iPod for transferring music to it on a Mac unless you want to upgrade the iPod's firmware on a Mac computer, then it will have to be Mac-formatted).
You see, when you recieve an iPod, it is shipped to you as a Windows-formatted iPod, probably since the majority of the population has PCs, and also, PC-formatted iPods are compatible for music transfer for a Mac also.
    Does that make sense?

  • How to set Permissions for Mac HD from "No Access" to "Read only"

Hi everyone! My friend's having a problem with her MacBook Pro. She accidentally changed the value of the Macintosh HD's privilege for everyone from Read only to No access. (See attached image for reference/guide). Seconds after, her Mac crashed. She rebooted her laptop, the Apple logo shows up with the usual scrolling week. Afterwards, the scrolling wheel disappears but the Apple logo is still there and it no longer proceeds to her login/desktop screen anymore.
We already tried Repairing Disk Permissions (by pressing Command +R on bootup) and Repair Disks, rebooted, but it's still up to nothing. Unfortunately, she doesn't have a Time Machine backup.
Is there a way to revert the changes even though the login/desktop screen can't be accessed? Is having the value "No access" on your Macintosh HD unsafe and will make you locked out of your system?
I am looking forward to your fast and favorable feedback. :-)
    Thanks in advance!

There is currently no way to access the disk, no access means no access.
Others may know better but I would backup the data on the drive, erase and reinstall.

  • Shared folder files open as read only even though they are set up as read write

Hello, I've recently purchased a iMac to work alongside my mac book pro. Primarily, i want this for ease of use at home and as a 'back up' to my pro should anything happen.
I have a number of folders and files on my pro that I wish to access on the iMac and have set up shared folders to enable this with a new profile and read/write permissions. This all works fine until I open the document, make changes then find that I have to save as a different name as the files open as 'read only'?
Is there anything I've missed? I would of expected 'read/write' permissions to enable me to save files as edited?
Any help appreciated otherwise, I'll have to resort to copying files between machines which would be a major dissapointment!
    Thanks in advance

Found the solution...basically the permissions are not automatically cascaded down to sub folders and files so you have to do the following... modified from https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2743520?start=0&tstart=0
On the folder that you would like to change, select the Get Info and then click on the cogwheel at the bottom of the Get Info dialog.
Click on the menu pick "Apply to enclosed items ..." and confirm the warning message.
Then the same read & write permissions are applied to all the subfolders of the selected folder.

  • Can't copy files from NTFS volume with Read Only permissions?

I am trying to copy files from an NTFS volume used previously for Windows onto another volume which is Mac OS X Extended...
However, certain files fail to copy due to the fact that I 'don't have permission to access some of the items'...
So I found the items which are causing the issue and viewed the permissions for them which display as 'You can only read'... I presume I am correct taking these as read-only permissions which (to my knowledge) should allow the files/folders to be copied accross to a new volume assuming that the existing volume is left without any changes attempted.
So can anyone suggest to me why this is? And how I might rectify the issue?
    Thanks in advance

Ok I've just worked out that 'You can only read' is referring to the fact that I can only view permissions but not add any. Below this statement, no permissions are listed which may explain why I cannot access the files but does not explain why I can copy/access some files, also with no permissions...

  • Folders become read/only when transfered to windows

I find that when I transfer a folder from my Mac to a PC windows reports the folder (and contents) as read only. Ownership is transferable, but try as I might, I cannot change the status to be not read only on windows. However, I can read, write, and modify the folders and files most of the time.
Recently, I transfered a very large folder hierarchy from my Mac to a PC and ran into an additional problem. When I add or modify any document in the hierarchy, the containing folder is duplicated by windows in the same location with the same name but empty of contents. Of course this causes a world of trouble, since there are now two identically named folders in the same location (one of which is empty).
How can this happen and where can I get information on how to prevent it? BTW, I am a Mac user by nature and only use the PC when I have to, that is why I try to find answers here!
Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Trying to share Excel files across two Macs, opens as read only

I'm trying to edit and save an excel file using my Mac Mini with the file located on my MacBook Pro. I've set the file sharing to read + write on the MacBook Pro and have created a file sharing user account. I access the Excel folder on the MacBook Pro from the Mini, sign in with a password. The file is an Excel for Mac 2011 that was created on the MacBook Pro. I can open the file on the Mini but it opens as Read Only.
I don't understand why I can't edit and save the file back to the MacBook Pro. Any thoughts?
    Thanks

    No, don't create it.
It is created by default in Macintosh HD/Users/Shared and has special privileges. In Finder from your "Go" menu > Go to Folder > and type in /Users and press "Go"

  • Home Sharing from Mac to iPad vs. Mac to AppleTV 2

Some odd quirks about Home Sharing from a Mac to the iPad, vs. from a Mac to AppleTV 2.
I'm seeing duplicates of some of my TV Seasons on the iPad (like, 3 identical icons that claim to be the same Season 2 of a series-the contents are identical). Meanwhile, some TV seasons don't show up at all.
Also, episodes seem once again out of order; this was an issue originally with AppleTV 2, which I fixed by adding both track numbers and season episode numbers.
All my content looks great in AppleTV 2 now-on the iPad..not so much I know the content all plays fine on all 3 devices, so it's not a format issue I don't think. Curious if anyone else is seeing some odd Home Sharing contents on their iPads/iPhones as well.

I am seeing an issue as well. It seems that when using Home Share on my iPad, that the directory listing of for example my TV shows is not complete. What I am seeing is that it only displays a subset of the entire catalog of TV shows in my iTunes Library. I notices that from A through S shows were present but nothing thereafter. So I changed the names of the TV Shows to start with an A for example and they did show up but then several shows dropped off the end of the listing. I concluded that the issue is not an alphabetical issue but just a limited amount of entries within the directory can be displayed.... obviously a bug within the iPad current release of 4.3. I do notice that the iPhone ver of IOS doesn't seem to have the problem. Also it does display several of the identical TV shows as well as mentioned in prior messages.

  • My Finder is opening folders in Read-Only Mode.

When I click on Finder. A folder is opening in read only mode. When I open any folders in it, then a new window is opened again in read only mode.
Just the "New Finder Window" is having this problem.
Please help me out with my problem. I want the Finder to open windows normally rather than in read only modes.

Problems such as yours are sometimes caused by files that should belong to you but are locked or have wrong permissions. This procedure will check for such files. It makes no changes and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
    First, empty the Trash.
Triple-click the line below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 -o -acl \) 2> /dev/null | wc -l
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
The output of this command, on a line directly below what you entered, will be a number such as "41." Please post it in a reply.

  • New Folders are Read Only

Logging in as admin with full priveledges and when I create a new folder on the deskop, it's Read Only. Get info displays Read/Write access but new folders are created as Read Only. I can't figure out why. Any ideas?

Thanks for the reply. Have tried repairing permissions with the same result. Do you have the command for creating a folder from the Terminal. I'll try that. I don't know what the umask is but I'll report back. Thanks again for the help. This is very strange.

  • Folders become read-only and I can't get them changed back, any suggestions?

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The read-only setting on folders has nothing to do with the read-only status of the contents. It's used by Windows for its own peculiar purposes. Basically, it's none of our business.

  • Mail attachments won't save - saying folders are Read Only

Every time I try save an attachement, mail pops up saying this location is read-only,
    Any help?

I still can't fix this issue.
This is what happens when I try to create a new folder in the target folder that I want to save my attachments too. The target folder has Read & Write access for everyone.
    I've tried:
Accessing Repair Utilities and typed in resetpassword
Resetting the permissions on my computer
    Relaunch Finder
But so far nothing works and I still get the Read Only error message when trying to create a new folder to save my attachments.
    UPDATE:
I've used these steps by Linc Davis, who is like a savior for everything Mac!
The thread to this problem can be found here - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4925516?start=0&tstart=0
Now my email is back to normal!

  • All Lumia 928 folders are 'read-only'

So all of a sudden, all the folders on my Lumia 928 are marked as read-only regardless of the PC it is plugged into, and I can no longer drag and drop files between the phone and PC because of it - it tells me I don't have permission or something like that. Not only that, the read-only checkbox is greyed out as you can see in the attachment, so I can't uncheck it to fix the problem. No dedicated software (Zune, Windows Phone Software) works either, and I have exhausted all possibilitiues I can think of.
It's clearly something with the phone since it happens on all PCs, and I suspect a setting, but I can't figure out which. If anyone has any thoughts, I'd welcome them.

Lots of my files and folders have become read-only after

    Hi,
    After opening your eclipse,
    Hit alt+shift+w and click "Navigator"
and then select your project folder -> right click it,
Go to properties and turn off read only.
