FAULT: COM Automation with long strings

Does anyone know if you can use COM Automation to call COM objects that return string longer than 255.
We have a problem in that when we call a method that returns a string longer than 255 chars it truncates it. The documentation says that you pass in a Varchar2.
I have tested the COM object from VB and it does not truncate it.

Hello eugene2,
I get the same problem.
Did you get a solution ?
Thanks in advance

  • Parameter with Long String

    I am opening a new JSP from current JSP. The new JSP needs a parameter, which happens to be very large > 3800 chars. I am using javascript function window.open(url) where url has everything including above large string. When I print the string I received in new JSP I get only 1880. Example
    url=/xyz/x1.jsp?x1_param=001001001001....( 3800 chars )
    Is there any size limitation with the parameter passed through JSP?
    If yes, then how do I work arround this size limitation problem?

    There is a limit to the length of parameters that you can pass in a url. I forget what the exact number is but apparently it is less than 3800.
    You could try opening a blank window and then have the JavaScript automatically submit a post on a hidden form where teh response is targetted to the new window.

    Hi,
    To configure your ODBC DataSource, go to Control Panel ---> DataSources(ODBC) (If you are in a Windows environment).
    Select the tab System DSN. If you have not added your data source, then do so by clicking on the Add button. If you have added the datasource, click on the Configure button to configure it.
    Give the datasource name, then the database name.
    You have to give the hostname, service name and server name. I guess, in most cases, the datasource name and host name will be the same, service name and server name will be the same. If you are using TCP/IP, the protocol will be onsoctcp.
    There will be a file named Services under C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc where you have to give the port number for accessing this server.
    It will be like this <service name> <portnumber>/tcp
    Hope this helps...
    best wishes,
    Nish

    Hi Allan,
    Thanks for asking, I knew I had forgotten to mention something. The phone was indeed unofficially unlocked, since there were no apple stores or even premium resellers in the region I lived in during the given procedure had to be done.
    I understand this could be a further complication, especially the fact the home button does not work. However, I was wondering if there would be a possibility to use a third-party application instead of iTunes to restore the iPhone? IF someone does know of such an application, I could easily solve further problems myself. Basically, the main issue here is my lack of ability to enter DFU mode.

    Can you get back to the home page?  If so, double click on the Home button and a row of recent Apps will line up along the bottom of the screen.  Scroll across and look for the Mail icon.  Press and hold on it until it starts to wiggle.  A red minus sign should appear on each icon.  Press the minus sign on the Mail App to remove it from the list of recent Apps.  This will stop it from running in the background.
    If you can not get back to the home page, try to reboot the iPad.  Hold both the Home and Sleep buttons for several seconds until the Apple logo appears.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" arrow.  The iPad should restart in a couple of minutes.

  • PL/SQL COMWRAP.SQL COM Automation in Windows

    Hello All,
    Mike here. I'm not sure which forum this should go in so I put it here.
    I'm writing a pl/sql procedure that calls ordcom (create by comwrap.sql) which uses orawpcom11.dll to work with com automation objects on windows. It appears that there is a limit on the amount of data that can be passed back to Oracle (approx. 34kb stored as a file). My best guess is that comwrap.sql doesn't provide for returned text steams that are larger than that provided by varchar2 in pl/sql. I tried adding to the comwrap.sql to have clob as a return type but that does not work.
    I am attempting to get back XML from a Windows component (SDK to Quickbooks) that I can then store in an XMLType table. This works when all of the returned XML (from the SDK com object) stays under 34kb (stored as a file). If I remember correctly, 33950 characters are returned at the maximum. Of course, when the XML should be longer, I can't store it because it is not correctly formed XML (incomplete).
    Does anyone know what is occuring and a way to get around this? Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Mike

    The actual size is 32767 bytes Mike. And I'm not sure what happened to the last byte to make it 32768 and exactly 32KB. ;-)
    You cannot change a varchar2 data type for a clob data type. These two types are quite different when it comes to memory allocation and management of variables of that type. These methods are incompatible. Essentially a clob variable is a "locator variable" (aka lob locator). Just another word for a pointer.
    Declaring a clob variable is simply defining a pointer variable that, as yet, points to nothing. The clob needs to be created, memory allocated, and the point/locator must be set to this chunk of clob memory allocated.
    Declaring a varchar2 variable results in the compiler doing the actual work at compilation time - reserving space for that variable and setting that variable's address to this preallocated space.
    In terms of client-server, this a tad more complex. The data sits in the client. The data must be passed to the server. So there is a client variable. There is a server variable. And the content of one needs to be copied/pushed/transferred somehow from client variable to server variable.
    Windows supports a set of data types. Oracle supports a different set. Why? Despite Oracle on Windows, Oracle also runs on something like a 100 other operating systems too. There are endian issues. CPUs dealing differently with reals and floats and integers. Oracle has thus its own abstraction layer and implement is own consistent set of data types - across all platforms.
    So when pushing data from a client variable (like a COM object var) into a server variable (like a CLOB), it is not as simple as "copy-and-paste".
    PL/SQL "understand" basic Windows data types like zero terminated strings - which it can accept into varchar2 variables. But as PL/SQL has a 32KB (less one byte) varchar2 limit, it cannot accept a huge Windows string (or data stream). And getting that to work via a clob, very likeky requires changes in the interface between client and server that does this transfer of data.
    It requires more than just changing the server variable's data type from varchar2 into a clob, unfortunately. You will need to read up on Oracle's EXTPROC interface (I expect this is what is being used to interface with COM objects?) to see how to deal with LOB data types in this respect.

    Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
    Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
    Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
    When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
    Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
    Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports (not "Diagnostic and Usage Messages") for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot. I know the report is long. Please post all of it anyway.
    In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
    Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • Problem with Long and BigDecimal DataType convertion

    HI,
    I have an application which talk to MySQL database with Spring JDBC layer and everything runs like a champ :)
    Now I am converting the same application with the same DAO implementation to communicate with oracle database and I am having some trouble converting DataType from database to my java code.
    For example before with MySQL I would convert any Integer coming from the database to Long datatype and it worked. Now it seems that Int datatype from oracle comes as a BigDecimal type.
    I am thinking about two approaches writing an additional implementation to implement my dao interfaces or if there is some trickery that I can bypass doing that and work around these datatype incompatibility from MYSQL to Oracle.
    I can also put bunch of try and catch statements and if fails with Long try with BigDecimal, but still don't buy it as the best solution.
    Here use also code snippet:
    User u = new User();
                        u.setObjectId((Long) m.get("oid"));//This works with MYSQL backend but not with Oracle so the raw object seem to be coming as BigDecimal datatype
                        u.setLogon((String) m.get("logon"));
                        u.setPassword((String) m.get("password"));
                        u.setName((String) m.get("uname"));
                        u.setCompany(companyDAO.getById((Long) m.get("cOid")));Any help will be appreciated.

  • When using the Database Connectivity Toolset, reads and writes with long binary fields are incompatible.

    I am trying to write LabVIEW Variants to long binary fields in a .mdb file using the Database Connectivity Toolset. I get errors when trying to convert the field back to a variant after reading it back from the database.
    I next tried flattening the variant before writing it and ultimately wound up doing the following experiments:
    1) If I use DB Tools Insert Data to write an ordinary string and read it back using a DB Tools Select Data, the string is converted from ASCII to Unicode.
    2) If I use DB Tools Create Parameterized Query to do an INSERT INTO or an UPDATE operation, specifying that the data is BINARY, then read it back using a DB Tools Select Data,
    the length of the string is prepended to the string itself as a big-endian four-byte integer.
    I can't think of any way to do a parameterized read, although the mechanism exists to return data via parameters.
    Presuming that this same problem affects Variants when they are written to the database and read back, I could see why I get an error. At least with flattened strings I have the option of discarding the length bytes from the beginning of the string.
    Am I missing something here?

    David,
    You've missed the point. When a data item is flattened to a string, the first four bytes of the string are expected to be the total length of the string in big-endian binary format. What is happening here is that preceding this four-byte length code is another copy of the same four bytes. If an ordinary string, "abcdefg" is used in place of the flattened data item, it will come back as <00><00><00><07>abcdefg. Here I've used to represent a byte in hexadecimal notation. This problem has nothing to do with flattening and unflattening data items. It has only to do with the data channel consisting of writing to and reading from the database.
    I am attaching three files that you can use to demonstrate the problem. The VI file c
    ontains an explanation of the problem and instructions for installing and operating the demonstration.

  • Strange behavior when emptying long strings

    The attached vi is supposed to clear a string indicator after its length becomes greater than a specified threshold length, with led indicators following the process.  It works fine at threshold 262268, but increasing it to 262269 causes it to periodically freeze.  The indicator lights do not update appropriately either.  Also if you set the threshold much higher, like around 1,000,000, the temporary freeze becomes even longer.  Is there a way to fix this?

    Hi AntLee,
    this is NOT a problem of memory handling - you are playing with 256kB of memory, pretty easy for modern computers.
    The problem comes from your LineFeed constant together with the string indicator!
    If you replace the LF by a Tab constant your example runs fine even with a treshhold of 1000000 (one million).
    So I suspect the string indicator has problems to show more than 262286 (~2^18) lines of text because of rendering all those line breaks - maybe NI should investigate this more deeply...
