FCP and Audio Filters Question.

Hello,
I'm editing this project for a client. I did not shoot it. However, one of the cameras was plugged into the sound board for audio, and the cameraman checked the camera levels and his were fine before shooting. The sound guy didn't check his levels and one of the voices is peaking quite a bit.
I have very little knowledge in audio production/editing. I'm running FCP 5 -- is there any advice anyone could give me within the audio editors of FCP? I also have Soundtrack, but have no experience with it.
I messed with the three-band EQ and took out some low frequencies but received minimal results.
Thanks so much, advice on these forums is always appreciated.
-Matthew
P.S. Can anyone also recommend a free (or relatively inexpensive) program that can create .FLV files from FCP or Quicktime?

Digital audio, once over driven, is a loss. There is no graceful degradation as in analog audio.
Pop over to the soundtrack pro forum, perhaps one of the experienced folks there can offer some help.
FLV 9 files can be generated from Quicktime Pro as H.264 then simply changing the suffix.

  • Info please...control surface and mixer for fcp and audio recording

i'm looking for a control surface for final cut pro and also xlr/line inputs for recording guitar and vocals in cubase or audacity.
read all the info here after numerous searches. still some questions.
was looking at the tascam 1082 but not sure of the build quality...i saw one and it looked a bit cheaply built. the two demos at guitar center were falling apart. didn't look nearly as well built as the mackie. also i have been reading here and elsewhere about bugs/problems etc.
was looking at the m-audio...not sure about that one...$1250...
was also looking at mackie control surface...but no firewire...how do you hook it up to a mac? also no audio inputs. what would i need to buy to work in conjunction with that for recording audio? if i bought the mackie, i'd still have to buy an audio inpur device and that would end up costing as much as the m audio.
i know i could just buy a mixer for recording and forget the control surface...i already have a shuttle pro which works fine and i have gotten used to using the mixer in fcp...no problems. but the motorized faders on a control surface sure would be nice
    so questions:
how does the mackie connect to a mac and what other device(s) would i need to record audio and how would they hook up...would they play nice together?
ppl who own the tascam...happy with it? used the mic and line preamps? are they noisy?
do i need an additional firewire bus reguardless of which control surface i get?
how does one route the audio for these when in fcp? i currently route my audio through my dsr 11 deck. will the control surface just go through firewire or would i have to actually jack into the control surface with additional cables and have to remove my present cables from my speakers everytime i want to use the control surface?
sorry so many questions. it's really tough to make an informed decision in buying something if you don't understand the mechanics of it.
btw, appreciate the info so far that i found doing my searches.
    thanks
    carl

I've got the Tascam FW1082 and I absolutely love it. I can't believe I ever edited without it. I'm considering upgrading to the 1884 in the future.
As for the mic preamps, they sound great. Nice and clean. There's no such thing as a line preamp, but the line inputs are clean as well.
For routing, I go to the 1082 via firewire until I turn on my external video monitor, at which point I send both video & audio to the deck and route the audio from the deck into a pair of the mixer's analog inputs. That way you avoid the delay of external monitoring. The 1082 allows you to listen to both the computer & the inputs at the same time, so switching back and forth is seamless.
As for durability, I've had it out on a few location recordings, but most of the time it's on my desk. It's still in mint condition. I'm sure if it was on a display where any 10 year old could come mess with it, it wouldn't be in as great of shape, but then again, a Neve console wouldn't look that great if every little brat that walked in the door could play with it. If you take care of your stuff, you'll have no issues with this mixer.

  • Oldskool chase sync with FCP and audio timecode

    hello all
I am using FCP to edit video (wow, cutting edge!)
and am starting out using Logic Pro 7 for scoring
but I really want to put together a system that lets me bounce back and forth
between the two with out much trouble (import export of xml)
Back in the day, it was common to take a video tape and stripe a single audio track with "audio timecode"
then the composer would playback to the video tape as the master and the sequencer would chase the audio timecode on the video tape
why would I want to do this now?
because FCP has no MIDI (or ReWire)
and the idea is to be able to edit and score at the same time
what I do have is more than one computer
I'd like one to have logic running in chase sync to an audio timecode track coming from FCP running on a second computer
so that I could have midi events running in sync
I'm thinking that I would have a dedicated audio out from FCP just for the audio timecode and logic should be able to follow when I hit play in FCP
    any thoughts or tips?
    G

Hey all, I found the solution!!!! Please see this link for a screencast of the way to keep your audio in sync and not drifting! I hope that you have the sucess I had in "tripping" this way and if you had success let me know, so I know the screencast was worthwhile. Yeah, Forums!

  • ADR and Audio Input Questions

So I'm attempting to use Soundtrack Pro to do ADR (dialogue replacement) on a video project, and I could use some advice.
I have a Sony V1U with a Rode NTG-1 XLR condenser microphone. Is there a way to get Soundtrack Pro to recognize the incoming audio from my camera?
If not, I've also been looking at XLR to USB converters, and there are two (neither of which I can get my hands on yet, arrrgh), one called Icicle from Blue Microphones, and another called MXL USB Mic Mate. Both have phantom power (my mic doesn't). I spoke to a salesguy at Guitar Center who was telling me (after admitting he'd never heard of them) that the sound quality would be terrible using an analog-to-USB converter like that, and I should buy an interface (like from M-Audio or similar).
Problem is, I don't want to buy extra sound gear. I just want to use what I've already got. Is there a way? (An XLR to mini-jack cable didn't work, as the Mac didn't recognize it.) It seems painful and unnecessary to record ADR tracks to the camera and then have to capture them and track lay into the timeline.
Surely someone else has done dialogue replacement?? Can you please help with some advice? Thank-you!

Well... in the end, I bought a MXL USB Mic Mate. And it works wonderfully. The guy at Guitar Center was a moron.
If you're using a decent XLR mic, and want to do voice-over, I recommend it. Soundtrack Pro recognizes the USB mic, and you're good to go.
There's still a delay during the ADR process, so it's FAR less than ideal, and I have yet to figure out how to use Soundtrack Pro in a more "professional" ADR way. If anybody has tips (or can point me somewhere online), that would be great. We've got a ton of ADR still to do.

  • FCP and LiveType configuration question!

    Hey there,
I created a little template in LiveType, however, when i export it - i cannot find a way to export it with a transparent background.
I know i COULD just place a background movie into Livetype and work from there, but my computer isn't fast enough.
Does anyone have any ideas about how to get a livetype file with a transparent background into FCP?
    Thanks so much,

It seems the default in LT is to RENDER BACKGROUND.
I forget where this is... might be with the final render dialog box or it's in the preferences. My thought is it's with the first.

  • Scene and Audio Problem/Question

    Hi-
I am working on an animation that is comprised of several
Scenes set up in flash. What I am wanting to do is add a mixed
musical piece that will play during the whole duration of the
animation. I thought I could that by just adding the audio file to
the first scene, but what happens is the first scene will play,
then it goes blank until the entire musical score is played and
scene two starts immediately after. Is it possible to get the music
to play across the whole range of scenes? If so how?
Thanks in advance for any help on this! It is much
    appreciated!!

I need to do this also.

  • Earphone and Audio Quality Question.

I have the 2nd generation iPod nano. Most of the my audio files are 128kbps. I am currently using the default earbuds.
I am thinking about buying these Shure SE110 (http://www.6ave.com/shop/SearchResults.aspx?kwd=SHURE)earphones. However, given the quality of my audio files, will the higher-end earphones even matter? Will there be any difference in sound quality/experience?
    Thanks.

The answer is simple... with Logic you have to know what you're doing as opposed to Garageband which does some of the work for you. Logic is a program (generally) designed for professionals, it assumes you know a little bit about EQ, Compressors, Limiters...etc.  If you don't, you need to learn if you wish to use Logic effectively. It also means you will need to study the ART of mixing, there's audio pros who say mixing can only be learned by doing it over and over and over....etc and listening to your mixes on as many different playback systems as possible.
Which version of Logic are you using? (important)
And what do you mean your CPU won't let you see the manual, the manual is online, if you have Safari you can see the manual.
Set Logic's master fader so your song never drives it over 0.0, but remember, louder is not necessarily better, first get a good mix/blend then worry about getting it louder.
Something else to consider, commercial recordings are mostly done using processing hardware that costs thousands of dollars. To compete with that you really have to know what you're doing.

  • Special Effects in FCP and extensions/filters

We are constructing a rock video and are looking for some strong organic effects, things that don't look canned and we can expand on. Has anyone seen any solid effects packages or manufacturers you would recommend?

    some strong organic effects,< </div>
Unfortunately, that's not much to go on, organic. Your gradient wipe is as organic as your grayscale resources. Your flora and fauna resources and presets in Motion are organic by definition. Expanding the presets is nothing more than basic Motion manipulation. Maybe Patrick's book wiol help move you from staring at Motin's interface to messing with it..
    o
You can find tons of Motion presets with a bit of research. Great backgrounds, prebuilt animations, and grayscales are available from Pixelan, ArtBeats and Digital Juice.

  • Video / Audio Filters not showing up in "Viewer" tab?

Hi, I recently re-installed Final Cut Express v4.0.1 after a hard drive crash.  Now the video and audio filters do not show up on the Viewer Screen.  They show up on the "Effects" menu tab (though video transitions do not).  I've attempted uninstall / reinstall and deleting preferences but still no luck.  Any suggestions?  Thanks!

You may not have deleted the dodgy app fully as there are numerous hidden folders.
    Use this free app:-

Make sure only FCE is selected and click the Remove Selected button at the bottom.

  • APPLE vs. FCP audio filters

I have a basic question. I'm trying to do some documentation on the various audio filters built into FCP, and you've got the "APPLE" folder and the "Final Cut Pro" folder.
I'm not asking for an explanation of each filter, as theres lots of documentation on line and from various sources, and I also know these filters are not on par with SOUNDTRACK PRO for doing any real audio fixing, but I have one simple question I'm just trying to get the answer to, so I can in turn explain it to others...
Why are there two sets of filters, APPLE and FCP? I can guess that FCP created those filters in their folder, but, then what are the APPLE filters...why are they seperated out?
    Any input would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • Help!  Audio for 16mm project, material to FCP and back again to 16mm

I am getting ready to send an AIFF file of the audio I created on FCP, working with video that was created from a 16mm to video transfer at my lab. They tell me the transfer was a non-drop frame transfer. The lab made a digital file from the transfer, which I imported into a FCP project with 23.98 sequence settings.
I want to compare the frame length of my WP to that of my video file so that I can determine how the audio house who will be transferring the AIFF to mag needs to compensate, and I am confused about how to measure the video file's frame length. If the sequence settings are at 23.98 fps, and the project runs from 1:00:05;12 to 1:11:49;08, to determine the frame length should I be assuming there are 24 frames per second or 30?
I don't have access anymore to the FCP so I can't check but a basic question is: if the sequence setting are set to 23.98fps, does that mean the timeline only has 24fps? When I convert at 30fps, my video file is 22 frames longer than my WP...
Thanks for any advice and questions--that all may be explained poorly...

When your project and sequence settings are at 23.98, it is for two main reasons. 1. ou are working with video footage shot at 23.98 and 2. you are working with film (24 fps), which was ultimately telecined to video which runs at 23.98. This is mainly implimented because you plan on either going back to a higher resolution "online" which you will be synching up the timecode with a better quality copy of the tape at a coloring house, or you will be using the edl from the 23.98 sequence to give to a negative cutter, so they can cut the negative correctly according to the timecode and how it links with the keycode.
I assume you are making a final product that will be on celuloid- an actual film print, not a video copy. is this correct?
Please clarify the following: did you shoot on film, get a telecine to a beta or dvcam, do you have a timecode burn-in on the tape and when you captured the clips into final cut, did you utilize Cinema Tools?
If you did run your clips through cinema tools, did you do it correctly (starting the process on the "aa" frame).
Is your project set to 23.98 or just your sequence? when you place captured clips onto the timeline do they have to be rendered? Is this a sync project or was it shot MOS?
And lastly, as I previously asked, are you sending all of your negative, the edl from FCP and the aiff to a negative cutter?

  • Medium Scale Production Question? (DVD studio Pro, FCP and Compressor)

    Please Help Me,
Ive made it to the last faze of 50 dvd production project with UNDERWATER video. Im trying to find the most efficient way to begin the DVD formatting process and Id like to think compressor could speed this up.
The underwater video is DV source captured in Final Cut 5, edited and marked with chapter markers for use with the custom DVD Studio Pro Menus.
Each DVD Menu is unique and each chapter marker corresponds with a button already prepared in a DVD studio pro menu.
    Im trying to determine:
    1. Whats the best setting to use for DVD quality (the tapes are no longer than 30 minutes)? My thought was a one pass CBR at 9mpbs.
    2. Can I create a batch process for the video and audio that WILL include the preset chapter markers and be useful in DVD studio pr? Ive attempted this process with the export to compressor setting in FCP 5 and then my custom 9mbs CBR setting in Compressor, but the "chapter" markers do not show up in DVD Studio Pro.
    3. What if any filters should i run over the video in Compressor to improve the quality of the underwater video? de-Interlacing? Color correction?
    4. Does it save me anytime to create this independent .m2v files for use in DVD studio pro or should I just create a export to quicktime file and let DVD studio Pro do the encoding? Does DVD studio pro re-encode the video when i burn my DVD with it?
Please help, ive got to get 29 done by monday and it took me months to get this far. Custom menus, editing, capturing, menu flaws, etc...
    Ryan

    Hi,
9mbs is too high if the discs will be duplicated (as opposed to replicated). 7 would be better. Be sure to compress the audio as Dolby Digital.
Do your color correction in FCP before compression.
    Best Wishes,
    Mitch

  • FCP 4 - Startup failing at Audio Filters

    Hi,
I've installed FCP 4 on a new Quad (with the patch by the way) but it always quits at the "Loading Audio Filters" stage. I know others have got v4 to work on the new machines and don't think it has anything to do with the patch as we're well past the "You need this hardware" dialogue. But I've also tried trashing preferences along with things like audio plugins.
This is a new machine, so there isn't an awful lot of 'rubbish' on there.
Any further ideas to get this going?
    Cheers
    Colin

    Colin
You want to go to Mac HD/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components. That is where all the Audio Unit plug ins live. I have found that FCP does not play well with MANY Audio Unit plug ins. What I did was moved a copy of this folder to my dock and put another folder on the desktop that I keep all the plug ins in. So if I quit out of FCP and want to use my Waves plug-ins or what ever in Logic then I can just do a quick drag to put them in place. Just remember to take them out of the folder before you launch FCP again.

  • New Media Encoder Error: video and/or audio filters are missing...

My colleague reported this error popup window while using Adobe Media Encoder CC (up-to-date):
"video and/or audio filters are missing and the rendered output may not match the original"
I've been seeing similar errors the past few days. I can't remember if the wording was the same in the errors I saw, but the circumstances were the same.
I've never seen this popup error before the most recent CC update.
    Some background info:
I queued up multiple Premiere Pro pproj files as usual from within Premiere
without rebooting or deleting any cache or temp files or anything, I start the queue
I have no special plugins installed in Premiere. Vanilla CC install.
    Windows 7, 64-bit
This error doesn't tell me what audio/video filter(s) are missing. The output files, once I dismiss this warning, are perfect.
The major problem: It stops the queue dead in it's tracks. Sure, it might seem handy to stop and give you a warning, but when it's a false report and there's nothing wrong, it's killing us, because we queue up multiple files for encoding overnight, and we're not here to get the popups.
What is likely causing this? Is it a bug that this is appearing so frequently? Has anyone else experienced this besides my colleague and I?
    Thanks!

Update for anyone experiencing this issue:
We are still investigating the cause of the issue and would really like your help tracking it down. If you run in to it I would be happy to jump on the phone with you and preferably do a screenshare as well. If you want to run some tests for me, this is what may help us track it down:
    0. Please make sure you are updated to the latest version of Premiere Pro and AME, which at this time are Premiere Pro 7.2.1 and AME 7.2.
    1. Simplify the project. Create a copy of the project and eliminate anything in the project that isn't related to the sequence(s) you are exporting. Then run the encode again. If it still occurs, move to the next step. If it doesn't occur any more, repeat step one and only remove half of the unused items (sorry, this is giong to be a manual process). Rinse, repeat.
    2. Open your sequence in Premiere and press Cmd/Ctrl + A to select all clips in your sequence. Right click and select Remove All Effects. Export again. No repro? Go to step 4. If it still repros, go to step 4.
    3. Make all the media offline. Export again. No repro? Go to step 4. Repro? Go to step 5.
    4. Send me a message with as much detail as possible. Even better would be if you could provide me a copy of your project file.
Your help in tracking this issue down is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  • Import video and audio from a dvd into FCP

Is there an easier way to import video and audio into Final Cut Pro - I am playing it on a DVD player and making a digital tape of it. Then logging and capturing it into FCP.

Hello and welcome to the forum!
Yes, there are a few ways that are faster. Have a look at this thread http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=3465691
You could use software, such as "streamclip", or import by plugging your camera into your capture device and hooking your capture device into your computer and capturing by non-controllable device settings.
    Good Luck
