FCP as online?

I am in the process of on lining a series of 50 minutem, cut intensive documentaries (400video edits, speed ramps reverse shots and freeze frames) for Worldwide HD Broadcast. The Programmes were offlined at SD and Project managed to an offline sequence (used media only) and then reconformed at HD. All tapes were meticulously logged and there are no timecode breaks on the source HDCAM tapes. Why then does FCP insist on putting the wrong clips (with the wrong Time code) in various random spots. In some cases the correct clip is sitting in the browser but has not made it into the sequence - in some cases the wrong clip has been digitised. Motion effects are ignored or just plain wrong.
FCP has been doing this for sometime now. Is it an XML issue? Isnt it about time apple sorted this one out? 10% of the clips in the first programme were wrong and I have spent all day eye matching clips back to the guide clip. Does any one know of a solution to this very frustrating problem?

One thing I do when preparing to media manage an offline/online project, is to isolate all my speed-adjusted clips in my offline sequence and put them in a separate sequence where I remove all the speed adjustments. I then include thiis sequence in my media manager step. That way, when FCP changes the timing of a clips that has been speed-adjusted, I have another master clip already logged/captured with the correct in/out that I can use to replace the speed adjusted one.
However, it sounds like you are encountering time shifts in other clips as well, not just the speed adjusted ones. You are probably encountering an issue I often think of as my pet bug. Look closely at the timecode on your tapes in the log and capture window - are they showing as drop frame or non-drop? The timecode display in Log and Capture and Edit to Tape will default to drop-frame, and for non-drop tapes you must play the tape until the timecode display updates to non-drop. This can cause problems in a few places.
1. logging - it is possible to log a NDF clip as DF. Ithis can potentially create clips that do not match the tape TC. You can compare the tc format of the logged clips to the tape, or try match-framing a point on the offline clip and the tape to see if they line up. I have also noticed that once a NDF clip gets edited into a DF sequence, its TC displays as DF under certain circumstances.
2. Capture - If your tapes have NDF TC, and you do a batch capture, it is possible for the batch to initiate while the deck control is in DF mode. The problem here is that once a batch capture has begun, FCP cannot update the timecode format - so if you start with a DF tape, then put in a NDF tape, the NDF tape TC will be read as DF, and shifted by FCP accordingly. The workaround here is to open Log and Capture before starting your batch, playing the tape until you see NDF TC in the current time field, then leave L&C open when you initiate your batch capture.
If this error has occurred when the offline clips were captured, your offline clips willl not match your tapes, and getting the online lips captured correcctly becomes more tedious. However, the issue is much more likely to occur when doing the online recapture, in which case taking that little precautionary step of opening log and capture before you start the batch should usually fix it.
Whe you doing your batch capture, keep an eye on the TC format on your tapes. If you are capturing DF and come across a NDF tape, stop the capture and update the TC format in L&C before starting again.
Hope this helps.

  • FCP HDSR Online Workflow

I'm editing a 35mm (2 Perf) feature in FCP using a DVCam offline standard workflow. We will eventually online to HDSR which will then be used to conform the film for film-out.
    My question...
It is very expensive to have the post place to the HDSR online, and all they are really doing is capturing the HDSR tapes to the FCP sequence. My producer owns a AJA ioHD box and as u can see, I have a powerful computer.
Could we just rent the HDSR deck, and use the AJA box to online it ourselves. I've heard something that we need an internal RAID or something, and that the AJA box might not be able to handle the 4:4:4 color.
Any thoughts would be appreciated. Cheers

    1. Yes they are. Does that affect anything in this potential process?
Wait, the DVCAM are 29.97 and the HDCAM tapes are 23.98? Whoa... well, I'll stop you here and say hire someone. Your entire offline cut and all of your footage is in a completely different timebase than the masters. This affects EVERYTHING in the process. Now you have to spit out EDLs and convert the EDLs and then make sure that the captured footage didn't slip any frames forward or back. There's a LOT that needs to be done to ensure that you capture the right footage. This isn't something a beginner should tackle. Pay someone, do it right.
    2. Is the AJA Kona 3 a card? I assume 4:4:4 is required?
Yes, AJA Kona 3. And I mentioned 4:4:4 because YOU mentioned 4:4:4. Now, are you going to master on HDCAM? Or HDCAM SR? Well, since your footage is already on HDCAM, the damage is done. HDCAM is 3:1:1...yes...you read right. 3:1:1. So going 4:4:4 is pointless. Best to work 4:2:2 (normal) and then just output back to HDCAM. Except you are going to FILM OUT, right?
    Hire someone.

  • FCP Offline/Online Workflow

i am not sure if this is the right forum or even an apple app question (someone direct me to a good sourse if not please) but, I am needing to do offline edit from HDV source and some HDCam source.
Based on my previous method of this in the SD world I would choose the photojpeg codec to save space and then online/uprez.
With HD and a Kona 3 card I dont see HD/SDI (HDSDI) NTSC Photojpeg Anamorphic capture codec. Even when selecting uncompressed HD I get disables view in the capture window so I know that's a card thing but capture the sd downcovert to test the codec I chose the SD Kona I/O and selected the SDI NTSC Photojpeg Ananmorphic codec and instead of reducing the image resolution/pixels and preserving frame size of 720x640 (or whatever is it in cant recall with these numbers in my head right now) its reducing the overall frame size too to like 320x240. i know i can then resize but is there a way to get the HDSDI to low rez photojpeg and not only reduce quality but keep the 16:9.
I tried to adjust the HD codec and reduce quality by 70%...couldnt test cause HDSDI on K3 isn't seeing the sig from HDCam VTR. But the 320x240 would work i just dont want to resize the images/clips.
Anyway, any ideas or help to get me going to capture low rez maintaining 16:9 (with reduced qual through pixels and not frame sizes)for a later uprez. Ive done theis beofre on an hd show about 3 yeasrs agao once, I cannot remember though and it was on FCP too in an offline/online workflow. I think we did it using sd capture from sd source, hmmm with the deck set at anamorphic/squeezed output to ana capture and then it was normal in sequence.
but in this case i am still dealing with small frame sizes 320x240...HELP!

ok, i'll look at the disc's. i think we just downloaded the full codec pack from aja's site..i do know when i check the "show all" box a boat load of codecs show, i believe i've seen one for hd...but any i seen reduced the frame size to something realy small.
i'll double check this new card kona3 and see what it's codec pack is.
thanks and i'll post my findings. geez, this should be simple...go from hdsdi to a low rez codec but keeping the full frame size...that's it done. and then uprez later using dvcproHD (well that's what i am using to save some space and it's a great codec.) but that's how easy it should be...works that way in sd too. i think i need to go in sd anamorphic and set the vtr's output to squeezed...i dunno i'll hopefully find help or figure it out one way or another.
thanks again, keep me posted with ideas..THANKS@!!!!!!

  • AVCHD Log and Transfer Crashes FCP

We've got one machine in our facility that flat refuses to transfer AVCHD clips from the SD card.
We've tried all the usual fixes (Removing Perian which wasn't even on the machine, but I did install it then uninstall it to see if that might help!) Know about the FX Factory update but it's not on the system. I've tried different settings in the L&T prefs such as removing duplicate frames, different capture codecs etc. Nothing works.
So the symptoms are, you can see all the clips no problem, but as soon as you add one to the queue, you get a brief period of nothing, then the beach ball for about 5 seconds then a 'poof' crash of FCP. Tried capturing from 2 card reader, direct from the camera...zilch, crashes everytime without fail...sorry, with fail!
    Machine spec:
FCP 6.0.5 (Can't update to 6.0.6 because of my RAID and server config)
Mac Pro Intel Dual Core Xeon 3GHz
    4 MB RAM
Black Magic Extreme HD SDI card
Mac OSX 10.5.5 (again cannot update because of my XSAN config)
    Help appreciated...

Hi DevRona, welcome to the Apple Discussions forum for FCP

If you want apt advice then you need to be clear and concise in your description of your problem
    what am i doing wrong
Start a new thread, don't piggyback someone else's. List all your pertinent hardware and software specs. Take your time to clearly describe the problem as best you can ... remember that none of us are there and can see what you may or may not be doing wrong. • OT - BBC Surfing Film shot on HDV & cut on FCP airing sunday

    Hi everyone,
Just to let you know there is a great film airing sunday as part of "The Natural World" ... Its a very stylish surf/environmental film set in Hawaii featuring Jack Johnson. apart from the fact its a great film (I didn't cut it but a good pal did)
I thought you might be interested that it was all shot HDV, cut HDV in FCP. Onlined traditional up rez tape route, with tracklay grade etc. The producer lived in Hawaii for a year shooting/digitising/ and cutting it and came up with some good workflows for HDV, I'll try and get him to post them here.
sorry that this only applies to the UK at the moment. (it will air in North America at some point next year) but for anyone in the UK its well worth a look!
let me know what you think
    best regards

    Jim,
I know exactly what you mean! I do know it wasn't without hiccups (what production is?) but it was the one of the best solutions I've seen so far for a smooth HDV native workflow (non DVCPRO HD transcode)..plus it meant he could live in Hawaii for a year without the cost of full HD cameras!
As someone very sceptical of HDV, I was impressed! You can bet it won't be any sort of golden goose, but I'll try and get the full monty as soon as..

  • Pro 6 and Pro 7

I have FCP 6.06 installed. I am using mountain lion. I heard that 6.06 is not stable on Mountain Lion. I bought FCP 7 online and I wanted to keep 6.06 to make sure 7 works well. Does anyone know how to install 7 with 6 still on my system? Apple told me they cannot offer phone support. They did tell me I should "hide" FCP 6. Has anyone done this and have any suggestions?
    Thanks

Clone your startup drive to an external bootable drive and then install fcp7.  If things go south, you can clone back to your internal startup drive.

  • The best way to work in HD 1080x1920...

    Hi All,
I've recently moved over to FCP and finding working in HD on the system a little frustrating. I would love to know how you all work in HD with regards to drives (RAID, fibre or FW, internal or external) and project settings, etc, etc.
I have chatted to some other FCP editors that online HD here in South Africa, and our suspicions are that HD1080i (1920x1080 and not HDV 1440) is far more challenging and maybe less tested (??) than the 1080 progressive format and 720. All the HD posts from the American editors using 1080p or 720p seem to not have the same hassles as we have....our rendering always falls over, the RAIDS never work, we're always out of memory (despite putting in 8GB worth on both our HD online suites), the FCP and Live Type titles just look terrible and have to be created in Motion, and finally we have weird bugs where music pieces repoint to different tracks of music - not making this up - which, as you can imagine, is awful in a final viewing!
Just curious and if you can spare a few minutes, I would love to read how you all work in the HD world....thanks so much!

    Hi Simon and Tall Guy,
Nope, no red error message for the disks being too slow, we get green lights on our raid - indicating happiness (I'm told!) Simon, when you say run a disk test from AJA, I'm not sure what you mean....not AJA as in an AJA box?? So sorry, am new to FCP and I last cut on an Apple several years ago...so am less familiar with OSX if it's an OS tool you're talking about...
To answer your question about what kind of errors we get - always "Out of Memory" even before we put RAM in and then of course after we put our extra RAM in, oh, AND on both our Online suites. So, very bizarre that we get it on "straight-from-the-factory" systems....oh and plus all the weirdness I mentioned in the initial post.
Tall Guy, thanks for re-affirming that FCP should have no problem cutting DV or Uncompressed HD and as you correctly said, it's the hardware that'll enable the correct workflow which is why I wondered what everyone else does when they work in the HD realm???
Even though I am new to cutting on FCP, our company - which specializes in HD wildlife documentaries - has been onling HD on FCP for about 3-years now and we initially tried the AJA box with loads of problems. So a technical guru suggested the card route which is why we have the BlackMagic.
In the years I took my offlines over to the FCP HD online suite to be onlined, we always had problems...I just assumed it was an FCP thing. Now that I am offlining on FCP and finding the software fantastic in the DV domain, I thought I could help out on our latest online and troubleshoot our usual errors. But somehow, onlining through the third-party hardware just isn't smooth and continues to give our company and it's online editors grief. So, I remain puzzled as to the best, most convenient, stress-free route to doing HD 1920x1080i uncompressed on the FCP, but thanks all for your help....much, much appreciated!

  • DNxHD QT issue

I've got an Avid DNxHD QT file of a one hour project that was offlined in FCP and onlined in DNxHD on an Adrenaline without problems using Automatic Duck. We put it to bed for a few months and made a DNxHD145 QT movie for my reference. It plays back a few frames out of sync on my Mac systems. I tried to to import it into FCP and see if I can correct the audio in the timeline. I've download the Avid QT codecs. The DNxHD QT plays in Quicktime Pro (two frames out of sync) but no video when imported in FCP. Might I be missing something in FCP when adding the Avid DNxHD codec to QT? Is there another step with FCP as well? I've read that the DNxHD QT's out of an Avid are viewing and not working QT's.

I wonder if you have "too many" codecs installed, FCP had (or maybe still has) a problem if you have too many codecs installed. Sometimes users are near the limit and then the Avid Codecs put them over the limit so the user perceives that FCP doesn't support the Avid Codecs.
Try moving the non-Avid QuickTime codecs located in "/Library/QuickTime" to a folder on your Desktop then restart your computer and then try playing back one of your Avid Codec movies in FCP.
BTW, what version of the Avid Codecs do you have installed?
I've played DNxHD movies before in FCP, it should work.

  • Blackmagic vs Smoke/Flame

    Hi All:
I have been using FCp for offline editing for more than 2 years now, but now I want to start doing online as well. I have a balckmagic multibridge pro card and I brought some 35mm footage transfered to Digibeta into FCP, and we had the same footage brought in from the same Deck into a Smoke/Flame. Then we exported a tiff frame of each into After effects to see if they were any differences. To my surprise the footage brought in from balckmagic looked really, really bad compared to the Smoke, so bad I could not call it "online quality".
That left me thinking that to call a codec 8bit or 10bit has nothing to do with the "quality" of the codec. So my question to you is: Has anybody done some serious testing comparing AJA, Blackmagic and Smoke/Flame? I would love to use FCP for online but if there is not a card that can give me the "quality" of the Smoke I can not even think about it.
    Thanks a lot
    Alex Neuman

one other thing to look at is in your easy setup what does the quality say it is. default on 525 10bit aja is medium. I obviously create a new one with best, by editing the easy setup.
outside of a perceptual test if you can record multiburst from a generator to your d beta capture some of that the insert back in and monitor your scopes you'll see what hi frequency detail is doing.
if you don't have a generator layoff some grads, glows from the smoke to a piece of worktape. source that in to your fcp system and insert back into the tape at a known number preferrably right in the middle of something and compare. That'll tell you much more about what's going on than a tiff file into aftereffects. you won't be entering the land of color space conversion nor tiff compression

  • Lion and Parallel 7

I am running Parallel 7 and my quick books on SL. I am buying a new computer with Lion. After installing Parallel 7 can I just replace all the files and quick books  to Lion? What files do I need to transfer?
    Thganks.

I have a clone drive (using Super Duper). Is this new feauture in Lion? I never heard the migration possibilties. So it will insert serials, activation #,? Some of the plugins in FCP require online registration. For example anytime I start my FCP it checks with the developer the serials.
I was to clone my new computer with Lion and make it SL, only because of time consuming. I hated to go backwards, in spite of some photoshop plugins are not Lion compatible.
You just saved me a ton's of time. Thanks a million!

  • Avid meridien uncompressed and compressed

Since I just bought a mac and started to edit on FCP, I came across a codec problem.
I had to finish up some work on my avid system(an old xpress pro hd 5.2.4 to be exactly.) This was done on my pc.
I exported my work into a quick time movie using avid's own meridien codec (compressed.)
Everything exported out and it looked good on pc, however, when I tried it on mac,
I got an error message prompting me to download a codec mac could read.( dvix, amongst others...)
The Avid codec wasn't available on the website so I went to the avid's site to get the exact codec, found it (avid downloads ...etc.)
    So far so good...
The problem is(and I am not sure whether it is a mac problem or avid not supporting..) I can not install "Avid AVDJcodec. comp
*(error message: The following install step failed: run postflight script for Avid Codecs LE.*
As we have a saying in Antwerp: Om stenen kloten van te krijgen.
Option nr 1: I can export all my work with another codec ( too much to handle because I really would like to start working on fcp.
option 2:      throw avid software out of the window and forget about it.
Is there something I can do to safe my work?
    Cheers,
    Timpie

Option #1 - Finish on your Avid. Why are you switching now? Every major non-linear editor captures to proprietary codecs that don't work well on other machines. Add the fact that you are coming from a PC and that makes matters worse.
Option #2 - Buy the upgrade to Media Composer and see if you can get the Mac edition. It should only be a few hundred dollars. And it is a very solid editing application.
Option #3 - recapture your footage. Export an OMF from your Avid and then use Automatic Duck Pro Importer (www.automaticduck.com) to import that into FCP. Yes, you can try an EDL, but that is iffy...especially if you used a lot of Avid effects.
I know that you can offline on Avid and finish on FCP, and offline on FCP and online on Avid, but to jump horses mid-stream is VERY difficult. I really suggest sticking with finishing the cut on the Avid....then you can move to Final Cut Pro.

  • Online Editor now ready to Online in FCP

I have a 90 min long form documentary that now needs onlining. My prior FCP projects were small, short videos with minimal online massaging needed. This time I have mixed formats, 4x3, 16x9, HiDef, Std Def, crappy archival footage, beautiful HD footage, graphics, etc. it all runs the gamut.
My eventual output will be DVD. I do have multi-layers in this project, with color effects, and effect transistions, as well as 8 to 12 tracks of audio. At 90 minutes it hasn't been any problem offlining on my MBP.
But now moving to online I assume that doing this on my laptop would be tough? The good thing is there is no pending deadline, which will help because many of the shots will take some time in COLOR.
To say this is a low budget project, would be a complement. It's more like no-budget. So I am trying to figure out what my options are to do this right. Slow, sluggish is OK for me, if it's CHEAP!
Someone suggested to hook up SATA drives with a card that I can put into the slot on MBP, which would speed up the playback. I do have a dual core MBP, so it is the best I can do on the processing end of things.
Should I convert all my HD files to ProRes for the online? I would hate to compress anything, so I am trying not to cut quality corners. Like I said it will be going to DVD, so I don't need a fancy HD card to output my project.
What are my options and what is the workflow on something like this? Is there any special software that helps the transition from offline to online. I assume that there will be a bit of a struggle relinking all of the different online files from their offline counterparts.
I do have natural breaks in the piece, and could break it up into sections to work on. This could help with memory, RAM issues.
If everyone leans toward a MacPro tower, can I get away with the minimal setup? Maybe a quad core with built in storage and a 24" monitor? Again my main objective is the best quality possible. If I can achieve the same quality on the MBP, with the only downside being time, I am OK with that.
Please let me know your thoughts. Any help would be appreciated.
    Paul

    Shane-
I have edited in Hollywood for the last 25 years, and have had to figure out all kinds of crazy systems and setups. I can understand your attitude. I wouldn't begin to try and tell you how to online on a Smoke(which I have been on for 14 years).
From a cost saving perspective, and the fact that this will not be broadcast(I think), I had hoped to patch my laptop into a HiDef TV with the monitor adapter and S-Video out, send the sequence to Color, run online drives thru Express34 slot, color correct from laptop using the HDTV(yes with S-Video composite in), and get everything as close as possible.
Then rent some time in a FCP online bay and bring my sequence in, to see how it looks on a broadcast monitor. Maybe by doing it this way I can save the Color time in the online bay. If everything is color corrected to my home HD monitor and is consistent, I could always tweek the final crunched down QT movie in Color again, when I am in the online bay.
I should have been more descriptive with what I wanted to do. I guess I just wanted confirmation from someone that all of the processing and rendering on MBP could be done. I didn't expect it to be easy.
I can't think of a cheaper way to do it. But unfortunately this project has cut many corners, just to end up where it is now.
    Thanks,
    Paul

  • Rendering in FCP + Watching QT files online = Crashing

Whenever I am rendering in FCP (and sometimes even when I am not), if I open a Quicktime file online it causes my computer to freeze.

Take pity on the ignorant. Thanks.

it would appear to be a problem with your installation of your web browser and its associated libraries. how long has this been happening? was there a specific application or third-party plugin that you installed recently that may have caused this? perhaps an incompatibility with an older plugin or similar that now conflicts with a recent system update.
    lots of possibilities.

  • Online in FCP with Red One

I am trying to do online with footage from RED One in FCP (uncompressed files). There is no way to playback in realtime. Is this not possible at all? Firewire 800 harddisk.
I am sending to Lustre for grading so I cannot use ProRes..have to use uncompressed. Any tips or tricks?

Proxy editing is used for editing RED in FCP using the REDCODE plugin which will allow playback.
There is a complete FCP workflow description and very detailed instructions for system requirements, etc., on the RED site:
    http://www.red.com/workflow
    http://www.red.com/support
lots of useful information about FCP editing workflows over on the RED forums:
    http://www.reduser.net
    http://www.redcamcentral.com
Otherwise, to use native R3D files, you'll need to something like RED Alert for the Mac.
I'm sure better RED support in FCP is coming, but right now 4K uncompressed editing requires brute strength. It's possible that you may be able to use something like SheerVideo to lower your overhead.
In any case, I would check the RED site and forums first, and verify exactly what kind of "uncompressed" files your Lustre artist needs.

  • How To: Online a FCP sequence

    Hi,
I have heard a few various ways to go about onlining a FCP sequence, I was wondering if someone who's fluid in this workflow could explain the follwing sequence:
I've captured all my footage using a DV codec, and have since edited 2 hours to 4 minutes. I want to online that 4 min sequence to Uncompressed 10 bit...what is the proper way to go about onlining just those four minutes and not all of my footage...media manager?
    please help.
    thank you,
    John
    dual 1.8mhz, 2gb ram,   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

You can start with either deleting your original media or not. Unless you need the space, it doesn't matter. With the original project open, open a new project. Drag the sequence you want to recapture in the new project (thereby copying it.). Select it and choose Media Manager from the file menu or by right (control) clicking on it. Choose "make offline", and "delete unused media". If you look at the media bar at the top of the window, the bar should reflect just the media you'll need for recapturing. Hit OK, and you'll get a bin full of the clips you need.
