FCP Project Settings Help - Mixing SD with HD

Hi,
I am trying to decide what settings to choose for my project and hope the experienced amongst you can shed some wisdom for me.
I am doing a promo ad to be shown in church on a windows pc with windows media player through a SD projector onto a 4:3 sized screen.
I will be filming a presenter with a Sony EX1 at 1920 x 1080 @ 25P. - square pixels
I have been given stock footage to include into the project that is 320 x 180, i have more footage to be delivered but I know it will be around the same SD res, maybe a bit larger.
The church auditorium has natural light and the projector is weak so video looks a little washed out at the best of times, so it is possible to get away with some pixelation as once its projected you really wont notice it.
My question is what do you recommend I set my project up as and what would be the best to export it.
I would like it to be widescreen (letterboxed) if possible.
Thanks
Dustin

Ok thanks, that is the only version they have.
It is a testimony about a women lost at sea in a canoe and the footage in question is a storm in the ocean, lighting, rain, waves etc...
The other footage is DV Pal of her speaking in a church so not too bad there.
I am actually trying to source some stock footage else where of a storm out to see at the moment as a last resort.
I will make the project native to the XDCAM footage and export to DVPAL AVI 720 x 560 anamorphic and see how it looks.
Thanks for your help guys, much appreciated.

• Project Settings help

I work for a construction company, and we have been filming some of our own footage for use in safety training.
We have an online training website where the employees take the safety courses, and the format that our videos have to be in for that website is flash.
I was just wondering what my project settings should be when I create a new project in Premiere?
I've kept the default of DV-NTSC standard, but looking at some of our final flash videos, they're not the best quality. Does that have anything to do with the project settings, or is it just the quality of the footage we upload (some from DV tape, some from a digital camera) & what we export it as?
I am used to DV-NTSC, because that is what I used in the past when I took a news class where we exported everything to tape for use in our newscast (because it was for TV).
But since everything we do is on the computer, I am wondering if I should choose a different setting...if that would make a difference in quality.
Should the project settings be based on the format of the footage I am importing? (like I said, we use either DV tape or digital files from a flip-camera...so what settings should I use for each of those?)
Advice/tips would be appreciated! Thanks!

I would choose one, and stick to it.
The older miniDV tape camera will produce footage (with Capture), that PrE can use perfectly, for an NTSC DV (SD) Project.
The newer camera will produce footage that has a higher resolution, as it is HD, and instead of Capture (as you mention, in real-time), you will just Import the footage. With later versions of PrE, there should be a Flip/Mimeo Preset, that should work fine.
I would not mix the footage, but it seems that you are not trying to do so, and are only trying to choose one camera, and stick to that for each Project. I would try that Flip footage/files in a Flip/Mimeo Project, and judge the output quality. Do not use that footage in an NTSC DV (SD) Project, but one designed for the Flip camera.
While the Sony probably has better glass (can be very important), it is SD (Standard Definition), so only has about 1/4 of the resolution of the Flip, with inferior glass. That increased resolution might make up for the glass difference, in general terms. For the safety videos, one might never see the differences in the lenses of those two cameras, but test for yourself, with the proper Preset for each camera.
Good luck,

• Selecting a FCP Project to Export Mix To ....

HI
When Exporting a STP Mutlitrack Mix Back to FCP (File/Export/ Master Mix with Send to FCP picked) FCP Launches and a Dialog Opens with a "Destination" drop down. Am I meant to be able to see / navigate to a FCP Project File from here? Seems like a should be able to, but all I get is an option to Create New Project... not what I want.
Sure, if FCP is already open with the correct Project the Destination box shows the project and the Export proceeds. Or If I cancel the whole thing and Import the XML document into the FCP after opening the Destination Project , my mix ends up in the right place.
But what's the point of the "Destination" fileld if it doesn't allow me to set one?
What am I missing here?
Thanks
Lee
BTW : STP 3.01, FCP 7.0.3

The destination dialog is where you save the mix file and xml file to disc. You will select which FCP >project to open it in once FCP opens.
Yes ... you are right. It's the Dialog in FCP I'm talking about ... STP doesn't remember the Project it came from on the return trip unless FCP has it open already. I guess technically it's an FCP issue (?) since that Dialog doesn't appear until FCP launches.... but I think STP should know what thew project file was called... and the Project Destination field be able to navigate to it.
Workflow that's all. There's workarounds, but I wanted to ensure I wasn't missing anything.

• Project settings for mixing AVCHD and iPhone video

Hello,
It seems that getting the correct project settings is imporant to Premiere, but what if I would like to mix AVCHD video with iPhone 3GS video?  Which project settings would I select in this case?
Thank you.

This question aroused my curiosity and I tried mixing 1080i AVCHD and Nokia phone .3gp video on an 1080i AVCHD timeline in PE8 - the 3gp video played fine, the AVCHD video needed the timeline rendered to give a decent quality playback.  I realise that's different from iPhone video, but I'm simply suggesting that it's worth trying, and that project presets don't necessarily mean that only the preset file type will work.
I have to say that this whole project settings thing is a mystery to me.  Why does a 1080i AVCHD preset make a better job of playing back 3gp video from the timeline than it does playing back 1080i AVCHD?  Weird. Why not just handle all that in the background (eg without asking the user for any settings at all, like one NLE here does, or simply setting the timeline to the first clip of the project (optionally) like another one here does?
As for the comment earlier on about background rendering - here (after a day or so) it seems to be not a very useful thing.  Much grinding by the CPU for a very slow result.  To get the timeline to play smoothly it's much quicker to position the work area bar as required and hit "enter".  Also, one has to watch for the new analysis process, which once started seems to create an everlasting CPU intensive process even if you cancel it.  You have to keep a sharp eye on the process manager and see what's consuming CPU cycles (if you don't know already) and kill any apparently rouge Adobe-related processes by hand.  "Bmem" is your friend here, which is about the first thing I install on any PC of mine - badmofo.org/bmem is the site for this excellent freeware app.

• Appropriate project settings.HELP

ok,I've never worked with HD formats, yesterday i bought my HD camera and i need some help.
What is the appropriate settings to start my HD project.I know,iknow...thats why exist the easy setup and audio/video settings. But I saw some discussions talking about it is better to work with ProRes 422 then DVC PROHD.There is my questions...
1-if I capture my videos from camera using DVC PROHD 108030p 48khz preset what is the correct preset if i want to work with ProRes422 compressor in my timeline?
2-After i finish the project, how do I export it? (it is a dvd midia project)
help
thx a lot.

Personally, I find nothing wrong with the DVCProHD codec. It's a very fine codec at that bitrate. If you transcode to ProRes, you'll need more harddrive space.
ProRes probably gives you more room to push color correction but since DVCProHD is the aquiring format, your benefits are not likely to be much unless you're heavily affecting the image.
Best to stay in the DVC codec for editing.
However, if you must go to prores, you can use the Apple ProRes 422 1440x1080 30p preset.
As for export...Export as you would for any other codec when going to DVD.

• Getting codec error in  a fcp project NEED HELP ASAP

All of my other projects seem to be working fine, but one project in Paticular when I try to export using "quickime conversion" I get a codec error....as soon as I hit enter...therefore I cannot get it to convert to a quicktime file.
I went an checked another project and it converted fine, it's just this one. how can I trouble shoot this.

Just copy what's in the sequence. This is just a quick fix if it works. You would still probably want to figure out what happened in the old project to avoid it in the future.
Seems like maybe you have the wrong sequence settings or something. Others here would be better equipped to troubleshoot it.
Good Luck.

• Upload FCP Projects and Associated Media to a Production

Hi,
This sounds very silly but I`m really disappointed and can`t figured out how to do it.
Is there a way to upload a *.fcp project and associate NOT ONLY the project but ALSO the Media that this project contains?
In other words, if I upload a FCP project and choose a Production to be associated the production is created but ONLY the FCP Project Asset is inside this production, not the whole medias.
A scan production (for the FCP file) also doesn`t work.
What works is uploading all media and associating to a production or do a Scan production into a directory with medias. But my FCP and Medias are in distinct places and a thought that FCP project could help me cleaning the Media directories (by uploading the project and after all medias are catalogued archiving them, so the rest in directories are useless).
The work around would be:
1- to do a Scan Production in the Media files and after that uploading a FCP project associating with that Production, but as I`ve said I can`t just scan the entire Media as it`s very messy and with this way I could be guaranteed that my important assets are catalogued (and archived) and the left ones in the messy directories could be quick filtered to exclusion and cleaning without worries.
2- to upload a FCP and associate to a production and after that manually move fcp associated assets to this production (this almost impossible because the limitation of 200 assets per page).
Can some one propose a better way?
Regards

No, you are correct, but unfortunately these are Elements (inside the FCP project) and not real Assets. So for instance, if you fill in the annotations on the Asset it will not show on the Elements (inside FCP projects) and vice-versa. You can`t do a lot of other things as well with elements as you can with assets.
So I would like to have a Production with all media created automatically when a FCP project is uploaded (or scanned).

• Project Settings v12 not allowing "Save"

Hello..
We are still on v12, I have a project that has been entered, however when the "Project Settings" window is opened with no change, with a change or opened at all I receive the error "There are problems with this document. Please review the highlighted sections, make any necessary corrections, and save it again."
However, nothing is highlighted for me to correct in any of my sections and I am not able to Save without Changes..
Any Ideas what this might be?? It is only happening to projects in 1 of my 5 associated groups.
Thank You.

Hi
Please clarify - Are you using EBS Oracle Projects? Are you using Forms based user interface or HTML pages?
On which release are you? R11i or release 12?
Are you trying to create a new project or to open an existing project?

• How do I import old FCP projects that have mysteriously changed to Linux Executable files?  Is it as simple as renaming the files with the.fcp extension?

I had some FCP projects on an old G3 tower that I finally want to finish. I was able to grab everything, media, etc. to my macbook pro but all of the Final Cut Pro actual movies/projects have turned into "linux executable files" that FCP X won't import.
I tried googling this issue but didn't really see any good answers. Would it be as simple as renaming the files with the .fcp extension?  I can't recall if my old version (really old) of FCP saves projects as .mov or .fcp files, but I'm assuming I'm not the only person this has happened to.
Thanks for your help!

I had some FCP projects on an old G3 tower that I finally want to finish.
What version of FCP was this? The project files can probably no longer be opened in the newer version of the OS. You could try adding the .fcp suffix, but I don't think it will help for this. Projects files are .fcp.
Regardless of the version, no legacy FCP projects will import into FCPX.
Media is a different matter. These are probably QuickTime .mov files. If these are appearing as Unix ececutables, they're probably not recoverable either.

• I need to output a PAL HDV project from FCP as a PAL DV file with 4 audio t

I need to output a PAL HDV project from FCP as a PAL DV file with 4 audio tracks - specifically one stereo pair to be t1&t3, the other stereo pair to be t2&t4. This is the standard way requested by an international distributor of tv programmes. I understand how to set the sequence in FCP to output 4 audio tracks - either 2 stereo pairs (1&2, + 3&4), or 4 discrete tracks. But how do I then output this as a QT file?
The manual tells me that to export multiple audio tracks, File>Export>QT Movie has it's Config pop-up menu in the Audio Settings area of the General tab of the Sequence Settings. Well, that's set for 4 discrete channels, but the QT export settings only allow for 2 mono or 1 stereo output, and that's what I get when I try it. What it says in the manual just doesn't happen.
Exporting via Compressor, on the other hand, has an abundance of choices of 4-track outputs, none of which are labelled as anything resembling 'discrete'. Would any of those 4.0 settings suffice? Or am I likely to get myself into difficulties further down the line? As I am monitoring for this task on a 2-track audio system, I cannot confirm exactly what I am getting when I use any of those settings.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
John

Call me naive, but I've not heard of splitting the stereo pairs like this before.
What broadcaster? (perhaps one of our EU regulars will drop in...)
You can do all sorts of pairing but it is coincident tracks pairing- eg 1/2 + 3/4
Sorry I can't offer anything.

• A question about project settings..FCP 7

I am using FCP 7 and I'm a little overwhelmed with the myriad of project settings options.
I use a Canon T3i and film in full HD (1920x1080 i think).  All my footage I transcode in compressor to Apple ProRes 422 before importing to FCP projects.
I installed another computer and reinstalled FCP 7 and lost my old templates and importing some footage, I get the red line indicating unrendered footage.
Is there a standard setting that Compressor and FCP use to make it easy to just transcode, import, and edit?  I'd like all my projects to look the best possible in full HD and there's hundreds of preset project settings and I'm a little unfamiliar with all the options.
Anyone have any quick tips, pointers, or thoughts?

If you drop a clip into the timeline, it means the sequence settings don't match the clip settings.  Make a new sequence, add the clip. FCP should ask "do you want the sequence to match the clip settings?" Click YES. If you don't see that, you might need to trash your preferences...or it might be an older version that doesn't support ProRes formats (FCP 5.1 and earlier).
Another way is to choose an EASY SETUP that matches your clip settings, and then make a new sequence.
And your camera shoots 1920x1080p...not i.

• How can l keep the same track mixer volume levels in logic when bouncing a project ? HELP !!!

When l bounce a project, all of the mixer levels return at the defult level automatically, they do not stay at the levels l require (levels l have previously set for each track). Which means l do not get each track at the volume l need when it is made into an mp3.
Below is an example from a help-discussion website with someone who has the exact same problem as me. However, none of the suggestions the people have made on it will resolve the on-going problem for either of us :
http://www.logicprohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=374597 (there is a clear explanation of the problem on this link with helpful screen shots)
Any help, suggestions or advice would be much appreciated.
Many thanks.

I gave the most probable cause/solution in that thread:
Open the event list (E), select and remove all MIDI CC 7  messages from all tracks/regions.
To select all MIDI CC 7 messages in one region, first select one, then hit shift-S.

• Just installed FCP 6 and now can't open FCP 5 projects!  HELP

Yesterday I was trying to get some help with an FCP project that would no longer open. After a number of (very good) ideas from this and other forums did not help, I gave up and purchased the newest version of FCP Studio 2, figured I would soon anyway.
Well, now I'm really in trouble. FCP 6 will not open my FCP 5 project. It says it will, but it just runs the striped line forever and the FCP says it is 'not responding'. I've seen this problem unresolved here on this forum from last July and I'm very very concerned and actually starting to panic. There must be a way to open my projects? If not, I'm so scr*d. Excuse my French.
Has anyone found a fix? I've deleted all of the renders from the project. Running on Leopard with plenty of space on drives.

I have 15 gigs space available on the hard drive. I'm afraid I'm not sure which ram you are referring to, but its an older G5 that is fully rammed out and the project I'm trying to open is 82 mb. The applestore person I spoke to assured me that my computer had what was necessary to run FCP 6, but my projects are going to get huge. There's no avoiding that, I'm afraid. They are CG and graphics and effects heavy. So I really do need to know how to cope with technical problems while working in large projects.
I deleted the older FCP and Soundtrack software before installation, but I don't think that's a 'clean install' as I'm sure there are remnant folders lying all over the place. If there is a 'clean install' button on the installation disc I received, I somehow overlooked it. I'd be happy for any instruction on this.
I would love to send the project to you, if you are willing to give it a go! How nice of you to offer! How would I do that?

• Help Figuring Out Project Settings?

I have footage from 2 different cameras. I think the cameramen just aren't too sure what they're talking about when it comes to the formats shot in, which in turn leave me a bit confused.
I was editing with HDV 1080p 25fps settings pretty fine, until I decided to replace a clip with an AE composition, and the next day playback became choppy for me. In trying to figure out what was wrong, I realized the clips for both cameras were saying 29.9 in premiere even though my cameraman said it was shot @ 25 fps on the Sony cam. So I am taking a guess here in saying I should probably be editing with project settings to match that 29/30 FPS, right?
Using mediainfo I am also seeing that the footage is 1080i, so should my project settings for these clips be HDV 1080i(60)? Any more info I can provide if needed, but I am already in a bind having to start this project over, but I am confused as to why I was getting playback just fine and then another day no matter what settings I used HDV playback got choppy. Currently re-installing CS4. Any help greatly appreciated as I am still new to this.

Yeah I was told it was done at 25fps, and that the Sony camera had 25, not 24 and that is very well an option in Premiere, but I'm guessing Mediainfo is a lot better to decide what to do it in. Just finished installing premiere again (I assume that will help with my stuttering in playback) and am going with HDV 1080i30 (60i) since that gives me 29.9 fps and well, 1080i instead of p. I tend to get overly worried about these things. I hope this is the right thing to use. I appreciate your feedback.
Not sure if this is relevant, but one camera gives me mpegs while the rest of footage is MP4.

• Cannot read version 4 fcp project and associated files with the new 5.1.2

I cannot read my fcp 4 version projects and associated files with the new 5.1.2 fcp.
Please help!

I bought the Final Cut 5 studio to use for my company but I have project files from version 4, which I would like to update. My G5 is running Tiger and Final Cut recognizes the old files as Final Cut Documents (the media is already on the G5) but will not open them or their associated quicktime files. I have no problem loading version4 to export the Masters but I would like to be able to upgrade the project files so that I can use them in my addition Studio Pro applications and touch them up in Shake. Also, I don't want to go and find FCP4 on the internet because it may have other problems.
What do you suggest?
Can FCP4 files be updated to version 5.1.2?
Can I get a back dated version of FCP4 through Apple?
Thanks for your time.
