FCP/STP workflow suggestions

I am editing wedding video and although I am comfortable in FCP I have not incorporated STP into my workflow yet. My question is how best to do this. I have worked through a book to become familiar with STP, but it's the integration of the two that they spend too little time on. The scenario is I edit possibly hundreds of clips into a video in FCP and then send a sequence to STP as a multitrack project. Now, since I've done a multritrack project I have one of two options for getting the audio back to the FCP project.
1. I can either choose to export the audio as a sound file and then go back into FCP, mute all my existing audio, and then import the STP created audio file.
2. Send the whole thing to Compressor straight from STP.
My problem is I can do the whole edit in FCP, be happy with the results, do all the audio post production work, create the DVD, and then if the customer comes back wanting changes I suddenly have a dilemna. If they ask for just one clip to be modified/changed in FCP I essentially have to redo all of my Soundtrack Pro work again, don't I? I mean the original STP project is no longer valid because I've changed the source material it relies on, so it all my STP work need to be done again? Please tell me there is something I'm missing, a better way? It's a tough issue for me to wrap my head around because it seems no matter which option I use from above the issue of re-edits causes another issue. So, to clarify.
1. Which workflow from above would your recommend, export the audio and reintegrate to FCP or go straight to Compressor?
2. Any ideas on how to handle the re-edit issue? Is there an alternative workflow I haven't considered that makes re-edits easier to deal with in this scenario?
Thanks in advance.

The most honest answer your going to get is, it depends. If ingesting the whole interview into FCP and then looking at it works for you then fine. Do it that way. There are others who would have gone into the interview knowing what they wanted out of it and could tell what parts to use. Still another possibility is to sit down and play the clip in quicktime and take notes of what is of use and just ingest that. Still another way is, the get the interview transcribed (with TC note) and decide from the transcriptions what parts you want to use. Really kind of depends on you.
Sound tweaking. Hmm. got to go with it depends, again. What type of tweaking. Levels? Do them in FCP. Looking to get rid of an offensive sound (hum) do that in STP and do it to the whole clip before you start editing. Remember that almost anything you do to the sound won't actually make it better. A particular annoying thing can be minimized, but that doesn't make it sound better, that's done in the recording.

Looking for Pre-Rendered Editing / Color Grading Workflow suggestions.
All my material is rendered via RenderMan, our resolution is 1280x544, and our format is generally .exr in 32 bit space.
Our editor has been converting over to 32-bit tiffs, and using Apple Intermediate Codec for editing, mostly for speed concerns.
We need to re-vamp our workflow so that we can edit our footage, and then do color grading of the edit head to tail to smooth the look between scenes. We want to do this in Color, being fed by Final Cut Pro's timeline.
We want to keep our bit depth as high as possible when coming into Color.
My question is, does anyone here have any workflow suggestions for doing what I am talking about.
I wasn't sure if we should just export and EDL from FCP and try to get Color to load our single frames from that. Or if there is a special Quicktime wrapper we should be using, or converting our 32-bit .exr files into some other format more readily available for using in Color?
Any thoughts would be great, thanks in advance!

You're not going to get anywhere beyond 10-bit. That's it.
Try encoding to 10-bit LOG dpx if you need upscale RGB.

  • Looking for some RAW + JPEG Workflow suggestions

I'm looking for some suggestions on how best to organize my workflow now that I've started shooting with RAW +JPEG. I previously shot only in RAW, but the time spent in post-production was killing me. I've realized that for 95% of my shots that already have the correct exposure, white balance, etc, a JPEG photo is really all I need and saves me a ton of time. I've become convinced that editing every single photo from a shoot in RAW is overkill. I want to have the RAW versions, however, to rescue that occasional great shot where I unfortunately miffed the settings.
Through reading other posts here and experimenting, I've found that Aperture basically defulats to showing me only the imported RAW photos and that I need to click "New Version from Master JPEG" to see the JPEG version. This seems counterintuitive to the workflow I'd like to establish though. (i.e. I'm thinking it would be nice to see only the JPEG versions, and then only bring up the RAW version when the photo needs some serious correction).
I suppose I could highlight the entire batch of imported photos and select "New Version from Master JPEG" and then sort through each RAW/JPEG stack, but I'm still hoping there's a less cumbersome way. Anyone out there have any good workflow suggestions for this issue? I'm curious how other people out there deal with this issue in their workflow.
    Thanks in advance!

Try this - I do this as a matter of course:
-select all of the photos after importing them into a project
-create a new album from selection/call it JPG
-with all of the images still selected create new version from master JPEG. all of these should now be the album pick
-close all stacks, the JPEG will be the one showing up on top for that album.

  • Songwriting workflow suggestions needed!

    Hi,
I am a beginning/intermediate Logic user. Am writing songs/tunes... and am experimenting all over the place. This is leading to an Arrange page nightmare.
For instance, I usually sing a melody over chord changes... so there's my A section let's say. Then I reharmonize the chords a few times before I find just the right combination, then I sometimes fiddle with the melody, then I come up with a few possible B sections... then I have a few arrangement ideas - one bassline.. perhaps a different one... maybe I'll transpose a B section...
Anyway - you get the idea. My arrange page is a MESS. And I mute parts and then listen back - and really end up wanting a little from this take, and this one... and ...
    I get confused.
    Who has workflow suggestions?
    Thanks in advance!

What you need to do is comp your takes to one master track, this applies to the bass, the guitar, the flute - whatever. Once you have taken all of the best bits and put them on to a master track, you can put all of the unused bits into a folder, label it "bass takes" for example. Then - very important - change the track from being a folder to being "no output". This way you are assured of not accidentally unmuting things you don't want to hear.
I find that color-coding various takes helps to keep them straight. I usually use red for my first take and move through the color chart for each later take.
So, read the manual about packing folders, coloring objects, changing the track type (from audio to audio instrument to midi to folder to no output).
Organization is crucial. While you are at it, read about saving as a project. You at least want all of the audio files relating to a song/project in one folder. Don't worry so much about having the samples in the project folder unless it is a project you will be moving to another studio.
It also helps to choose the option "name audio files after audio object" on the page that assigns the record path. You can then name the object according to the instrument you are recording. If the object is named "Bass", the takes will be named "Bass#01" and so on.
You have some reading to do!

  • Looking for FCP - Avid - FCP workflow suggestion

I work with FCP on projects where we capture an entire film (two reels, about 20GB DVPal), then edit this down to 30 or so sec spots and then online at Blackmagic 10bit. Right now we have some freelancers who will be working on their own computers at home using Avid Express HD on Mac laptops, and then delivering us an edl of their cut. I was just wondering if anyone knew of a way where we could capture the film here and then transfer to an external drive for the freelancer to cut the promo that would work in Avid. I gave them a clip captured at DVPal to test, but it took over 5 minutes to convert a clip to OMF?? for use in Avid, and the clip was only 1min30 long, which isn't much use when we will be giving them a 90 min film. I know this seems like an odd way to do it, but we're trying to create the least amount of work at both ends.
I don't know anything about Avid but figured since the workflow begins in FCP, I should post here, and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Oh, and Automatic Duck isn't possible due to cost restraints, not sure if it would help anyway.
Dual 2GHz PowerPC G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   XRaid Final Cut Studio

Since avid uses the OMFI format then there is no easy direct way to xfer media between the two. You can take the diged files from FCP (which are quicktime) and import them into Avid but they are transcoded to OMFI and I am almost certain (but not 100% - and not at my Avid this month so I can't test) that you loose timecode.
The couple of time I've had to do just this I had the material dubbed to DVCam for capture in Avid. Simple, cheap. Timecode is fine. Capture in Avid, make the edit, export EDL (taking care not to use fx and things that won't transfer), then recapture from originals in FCP. Good luck.

  • FCP to STP workflow problems

Hi all, having some real problems with a charitable recording I have done for the kids local theatrical group and wonder if anyone can help. Here is the issue:
Recorded kids play with single cam with onboard mic. Used Sony HDV A1 which has used track 1 for the audio from the shotgun mic and has put the audio from the onboard stereo? mics on track 2. Audio is as good as its going to be with the shotgun mic apart from the times when parents are clapping when it distorts.
Have the whole play in 2 long - 45mins - runs without any stop start.
I then put the sequence on the timeline and use the razor blade to split the various scenes (need to cut some of the play out). Now have the whole play with 2 audio tracks with cuts where I want them. Tricky bit comes next.
I need to loose the audio track 2 as it is too quiet and use the mono track 1 but try to do something with the distorted and too loud sections. I tried to send each cut scene to STP, make the adjustments, send it back etc., but have noticed (after waiting 24-hours for the render down to SD for the DVD) that each of the cut scenes seems to have been treated as a whole 90 minute section by STP with each one coming in at 1.2Gb! No wonder Compressor was taking a long time to do its stuff!
So, I take it there is a better way but any idea how I should do this? Working with the 45 minute clips on the timeline is nice and easy but how do I handle the audio? Just want the one track replicated across audio 1 and 2 plus for STP to just handle each section of the sequence rather than the whole thing.
    Many thanks in advance,
    Michael

    Hi Jim,
Many thanks - this has helped a lot and I can now work on the audio with each clip and the resulting file size has gone down to a fraction of the original.
Any thoughts on the 2nd part of my question around audio tracks? As mentioned my Sony A1 seems to have captured two tracks and I need to discard one (the onboard mic). If I do this by simply deleting the 2nd Audio track in FCP when I open the track 1 in STP I can see it again. I guess by removing it from the FCP timeline does not result in removing the track from the referenced file that is sent to STP.
Tried converting tracks to mono in STP, saving and returning to FCP but then I get a 'reconnect missing media' error as the number of tracks has changed. When I reconnect it works fine (mono audio from both left and right) but the red \ through the file name audio symbol is still shown against the STP file name in the FCP browser. Suppose I can live with this but the red \ is probably telling me that I am doing something wrong!!
Thanks once again for the help so far,
    Regards, Mike

  • FCP - Color Workflow?

Ok, I'll try to be as descriptive as possible in my explanation of my workflow. I'm working on color grading a small independent film for a friend. Since we both of Apple computers, we are using FCP and Color. The directory is doing all the editing on her Macbook Pro. I'm doing all the color grading on my Mac Pro. We are both working on external 1Tb hard drives (1 for editing, 1 for grading).
She starts by editing the film. I already have a copy of her FCP project (and all media files) on my external hard drive. So when she tweaks and edits a sequence, I just copy her FCP project onto my external. I then open her project and export an XML from FCP to reconform with Color.
Color reconforms the XML fine. It was my knowledge that to get from my Color to her FCP, that I would just need to render my Color project, give her the XML that Color creates for her to import into FCP. Unfortunately that is not as smooth as I was hoping. As soon as she imports the XML into FCP, it is constantly trying to reconnect the media. No problem until I realize that the render in Color produced .movs on my external. I proceed to copy those onto her external and they are not able to link up. I keep getting the error that there is a difference in audio - video tracks.
I wish the workflow was easier between both programs when they are on different computers. It just seems that they are not meant to handle a project that is edited and graded on different machines. Does anybody have any suggestions to improve the workflow? I'm sure I could be doing something wrong, but I searched and read and could not find much info about working on different computers. Thanks for any help.

The issue that you are facing is that you did not realize that COLOR would render new media, and it is all video ONLY.
The workflow that succeeds for sharing projects is one in which the media moves with the project.
You do not need to move everything everytime. There is a strategy using "Media Manager". Your production partner should "Media Manage" the locked project to the transport drive. You would open that and create a target directory on that drive for COLOR. Render your graded COLOR version to it, do a Send To... FCP, where it will create a new (from COLOR) sequence in the original FCP project and return the whole shebang to the editor. Beware that there may be some panning issues with the XML -reconnected audio. In that case, copy the audio from the original FCP (for COLOR) into the new (from COLOR) sequence. Or bake it out from the original and drop it into the new graded sequence, or wait for the finished wav from the audio post house.... oh, wait a minute, you're probably not getting the audio mixed or sweetened, but whatever.
There is another, cumbersome, workflow and that has to do with creating a "Final Gather" Quicktime for export. Mostly that option is employed with dpx sequences, since you will by now have probably figured out that COLOR somewhat inconveniently renders each new QT into its own subfolder, which makes them a tiny bit inaccessible for most manual reconnection approaches. To be honest, I haven't used it for so long, that I'm not sure that it works for QT anymore. Worth looking up in the Manual.
Would you mind exploring that for me?

  • FCP - Color Workflow Question

I have DVCPRO HD sequences in FCP that I have applied Smoothcam filter to in many instances (one 10 minute sequence probably has Smoothcam applied to at least 15 of the clips). With over 4 hours of footage and Smoothcam applied often it would seem very labor intensive to have to create individual Quicktime movies for each of the clips where Smoothcam is applied and then drop those into the FCP timeline before sending to Color (especially as I will likely have to tweak the Color settings multiple times before getting the perfect outcome).
My sense is that I may be able to minimize the workload by:
    1) creating one Quicktime movie of say an entire sequence with multiple instances of the Smoothcam fliter applied (instead of creating individual Quicktime movies of each clip where Smoothcam is applied)
    2) sending that Quicktime movie to Color for grading
My question under the scenario directly above is how do you then split the Quicktime movie into the individual clips in Color so that each clip can be graded individually?
The only other alternative I can see is to:
    1) remove all of the Smoothcam filters (and sharpening filters) in the FCP timeline
    2) send sequence to Color for grading
    3) roundtrip to FCP
    4) apply Smoothcam filter (and sharpening filters) to all of the individual clips again after color grading is totally complete
I am a little daunted by the thought of this with over 4 hours of DVCPRO HD footage. Your suggestions regarding the best and most efficient workflow would be greatly appreciated.

Not quite six of one and half a case of the other, but you are in for some effort either way. Thomas Edison had an observation about "opportunity" arriving dressed in coveralls, but most people take a pass on it because it looks like "too much work".
If you elect the "bake out one big QT file" workflow, there is some efficiency to bringing the new QT onto a copy of the originating timeline and using that as a cutting guide to "razor in" the event boundaries, and then send that to COLOR. It will save a significant amount of re-rendering time.
If you remove the Smoothcam and other filters and send the raw source media to COLOR, that would be a normal workflow. I'd imagine there will be a significant amount of "attribute" copying after the fact, and of course all the smoothcams will have to go through "re-analysis". (I'd send a duplicate sequence, so the original filtered sequence can act as a source.)
The smoothcam filter will probably yield a different rendition on the COLOR-graded media, since the Boolean re-scaling (to keep the image within the active picture area) may not exhibit the same behaviour -- since you will only be dealing with the selected footage, rather than the entire source clip.
Sending the clips with an attached Smoothcam filter would probably result in massive render times, since FCP requires the entire intact source media to compute the stabilizing script, similar to sending a clip with a speed adjustment.

  • HDV Workflow Suggestions

Hi, could anyone suggest a workflow for editing HDV material for me. I am working with a Mac G5, OS 10.4.9 and FCP 5.0.4
I have shot my material with my Sony Z1 in the HDV format but don't like editing in that format because of long render times. I was thinking about doing an off line edit and downconverting the footage (in camera) to SD DV and editing that way, then recapturing at HDV. Would this work? I want to be able to deliver a SD DVD to my client now and then be able to print to tape the HDV version so I could deliver that at a later time.
I am just looking for the best possible solution.

    Tim,
Here's a popular HDV workflow...not exactly what you're looking for, but a great option:

  • $5k camera recs with hassle-free FCP X workflow?

Sorry if this is a redundant question, but I couldn't find a current answer in past posts.
Desperately looking to replicate the good ol' MiniDv workflow from years back when I connected my camera to FCP via firewire and captured with no re-compression voodoo inbetween. How do I get that same workflow in AVC-DVC-HDV-Whatever HD land?
If I have $5kish to spend and want 2 XLR inputs and easy workflow, any recs come to mind?
    Thanks much.
    Tony

For one, try something in the Canon XF series. At the low end is the XF 100; at the high end iks the XF 300. FCPX will be happy editing the native MPEG codec…or you can optimize. Good candidates for what you want, but there are other contenders.
If you download the latest plug-in, and have 10.7, the clips will import far faster than real time.

  • STP workflow when editing DV audio

I'm editing audio sent from a FCP sequence as a mulitrack project. Can anyone with experience tell me how they go about cleaning up the audio, what do they do, in what order and why? Yes, this is broad, so I'll narrow it with some specifics. The audio I have is from an outdoor wedding so here are the tasks that need to be done that I see.
-analyze and remove clicks/pops and clipping (editor)
-set noise print and reduce background noise (editor)
-lower the amplitude of a few sections to remove unwanted sharp sounds (editor)
-mix the volume levels of various tracks to create the right levels for each in relation to each other (timeline)
As of now these are the things that need done and that is the order I've thought of doing them in. Can anyone with experience tell me if I've got these tasks obviously out of order? I love STP, but I'm new to audio editing as a concept so I'd like to get some advice on logical steps to follow such as what steps to do first, second, etc. in STP.

Either export the audio to 48k, or recapture it in FCP. iMovie captures as DV streams, where FCP uses the codec expected by the sequence settings.
If you recapture in FCP set the capture settings to 32k 16 bit.
There is no other "fix" here don't believe.

  • Workflow Suggestions Please - Adjust Colour, White Balance, Levels, Resize

    Hi,
I have a number of photographs which I need to present in a consistent fashion - each is slightly different from the next in terms of exposure, levels, white balance etc, but they should all be the same. Because each is different, I can't simply define a preset in each of these and apply across the board: each needs to be consistent....
So Can anyone suggest an efficient workflow to:
    - Adjust the colour so that each is consistent across the group?
    - Adjust the levels so that each is consistent across the group?
    - Straighten, Crop and resize so that each is an identical size?
Any advice much appreciated. I'm working with CS3 on a Mac.
    D

Image: Adjustments: Match Color? I have never found this useful but maybe it's what you need. I would use it on a duplicate layer because as far as I know it's not available as an Adjustment Layer.
As far as canvas size, as long as you don't have any background layers, you can make all canvas sizes match and it's non destructive (think of the canvas as a window)
When you do end up scaling the image contents consider using Smart Objects so the sizing is non-destructive.

  • Workflow suggestions for CS4, Sony XR520 (HD) & TRV18 (SD-MiniDV)?

    Hello all,
I'm working on my first video "production" in a long while, and it's my first time delving into the world of HD and mixed formats. So I'm feeling a bit like a fish out of water.
This is the workflow I was USED to:
Connect camera to computer via FireWire(MiniDV-SD-60i)
    Launch Premiere 6.5
Use Capture Utility to set In/Out points and bring in as AVI clips
Import those AVI clips into bins and edit directly
    Save Timeline out to AVI
    Encode to final output format
SO, this is the situation I'm faced with now:
Two cameras. Main camera is Sony HDR-XR520 (AVCHD-1080i). Second camera is Sony DCR-TRV18 (DV - MiniDV - 30fps Interlaced - 60i?) for time lapse shots/filler shots.
My final output is going to be computer/internet playback (I'm assuming I'm going to need to output to a progressive format, 24P or 30P. Am I right on this?)
Any suggestion as to what my workflow needs to be?
    My assumptions:
    Edit using a 1080i30 (60i) timeline(sequence)
    Edit XR520 clips directly
Import TRV18 as avi clips, put in timeline, but only use clips to fill 1/4 of the HD frame (don't try to up res)
Export to AVI, encode to mpeg4 and remove interlace.
Am I going in the right direction here, or am I all wrong on this?

Thanks for the suggestion. Yeah, I guess that's the thing: the final output, while it will be computer/internet playback, doesn't necessarily have to be at full hd. In fact, I'd rather it be 1280x720, since not all laptops (typical of what our sales people will have) will be able to handle playback of HD video. I really just want them to be able to play this video back in PowerPoint or directly through WindowMedia/QuickTime at 100% or fullscreen mode, and still be high quality to the viewer (typically in a conference room/board room, on a projector, an large monitor, or directly on the laptop screen)
I've seen SD internet video that plays back really well in fullscreen mode (on a typical 1280x1024 monitor), but I don't know what export settings will yield those type of results. Any good tutorials on getting SD video to encode and play really well at monitor resolutions?
It'd be nice to be able to use the SD timelapse footage at full size, but I was planning on only using that timelapse footage in multiples (2-3 clips playing at SD size on an HD timeline). As far as PAR, if I was to manually place black bars on the 4:3 footage, would I be able to export in native 16:9 PAR so I could then edit it in a 16:9 timeline?
So, going along with your suggestion, would I need to convert all my HD clips FIRST to 1280x720, then edit on a 720 timeline, or edit on a 1080 timeline and export to a 720 output?
Also, am I right that since playback is on a monitor/projector, that I'll need the video to be progressive?

  • Lightroom + CS3 workflow suggestions please

I have been scanning a lot of old photos and slides from my grandparents, some of which are quite badly damaged and require work beyond the capabilities of Lightroom.
I like the Lightroom non-destructive editing capabilities and the fact that I can create many virtual copies of a photo without taking up more disk space for each copy.
However, when editing in CS3, I am forced to write out a new PSD file each time - thus dramatically increasing the amount of disk space used.
I just wanted to hear how other people structure their workflow when editing Lightroom files in CS3? I want to maximise the flexibility of editing (especially when experimenting with edits that I may later want to undo), while minimising the amount of disk space used (some scans are very large).
    Suggestions?

    Answered my own question
The problem for me is that I was using two monitors.
The second display was set to Grid view and this is where I select the images.  If you then press 'B' to send to the Target Collection then only the first image gets sent.
If you have Grid View on the first display and then select the images and press 'B'  all the selected images go to the Target Collection.
The same effect happens with Flagging or setting Colour Labels.  Only first image on second screen (Grid View) but all selected images if on first screen (Grid View)
    Bug or feature!

  • HD workflow suggestions

For my current workflow, I shoot HD footage onto P2 cards and transfer them to an external hard drive as the mfx files, then use FCP's "Log and transfer" to import and convert them to QT files. I often overshoot to make sure I have coverage, but this it taking up big amounts of space on hard drives.
My hope is to find a way to name all the footage, since it my HVX names it all numbers and letters, but only transfer and convert the best clips. Is there a program or way I can mark or label "b" clips to only transfer to my edit drive IF I need them?
    Thanks!!

You can use the P2CMS application to view, import and organize your P2 media. But you have to manually look at the footage, and determine what is good footage and what is not. There is no automatic way to mark the footage in the camera with a button press as GOOD, and have FCP only import that. You still have to do things the old fashioned way. Shoot lots, review your footage, import only what you need.
FCPs log and transfer allows you to name the footage upon import. And you can even use the P2CMS software to set up scene files in your camera ahead of time to name the footage, if you know what you will be shooting.
