FCP wants to scatter my media files everywhere - should I force it not to?

Hey,
We're an up and coming church starting with FCP on a couple of machines here, and before we make too many projects I'd like for us to make our naming and storing conventions consistent. So I wrote down what I thought would be a decent system - it basically looks like this:
-YYYY-MM-DD Project Name
---Sources
-----Capture scratch
-----Audio (like music)
---Processing
-----Video
-----Audio
---Exports
------YYYY-MM-DD Description.mov
---Project.fcp
(All of these are folders except italics which represent sample filenames)
For me, it really seems logical to keep all of the media source files and my project file in the same folder. In my mind, this has several benefits:
- It's easy to backup
- It's easy to look at a glance to see how much disk space a given project is using
- If I need to take my project and go edit on another machine, I can grab my folder and know I have everything
Also, I tend to work with a finder window open in the folder where my project files are in. This way, as I create new files I can see them all and quickly open them in different applications (because each Application's "import" dialogs typically defaults to a different folder, and I spend all day navigating to my project folder in all these applications). I like having the Finder window open - I can see everything, get a sense for what junk is laying around, see at a glance if something is off, etc.
But Final Cut insists on setting your scratch disks as a per-system setting - spreading your media project files all over creation (your render files, waveform cache, and capture scratch files are nowhere near each other - you have to navigate outside of each one's project folder to get to the other one), and I'm having a lot of difficulty understanding the benefits in this. One might be the assumption that after you finish a project that you're going to delete your caches and capture scratch, but this is rarely the case for me (for a number of reasons – a biggie is that we have ~1.5TB of space). But even so - I still don't understand why you would separate all of the files so far apart.
Maybe this is just a workflow I'm new to, but with the folder separation I can't do my typical "leave the finder window open and use it to manage your files" workflow I'm used to on Windows. I could use spotlight to make a "smart folder" "containing" everything, but then I can’t click + drag files into that 'folder' so they’re accessible to other applications. It seems I could force FCP to put everything where I want it to be, but since it's not a per-project setting, I would need to re-set four folder settings each time I open a project - and I'm bound to accidentally forget once or twice, which would really mess things up.
So, I guess the reason I'm here (since FCP seems reliant on maintaining it's way of doing things) is to see if I can ask some of you to persuade me why doing things FCP's way is better. I've looked at a number of FCP workflow tutorials and none of them even hint at the thought that FCP's workflow is flawed - they all go merrily about showing you how to use it.
Is there some big obvious thing I'm missing? Some reason I should want my files chaotically organized across a number of different drives? Apart from the assumption I'm going to be deleting my caches and media files (like I said - I think is fairly rare), I can't see one single advantage in this. It's certainly not redundancy - it only takes one of your drives dying to knock out your project for sure.
Sorry for the long post. I'd just like to do things right... and usually that means accepting the manufacturer's defaults. But I'd really like to understand why first.
Thanks.

Welcome to the forum Oreckel!
The best way to work with FCP's media files is to not overthink it. It's all done from the "Scratch Disk" settings. Just select a DRIVE for media captures and renders to go to. FCP handles the rest. It creates a folder called "Capture Scratch", another called "Renders" and a third called "Audio Renders". In each of these folders it creates a folder for each project file containing the media that is associated with that particular project, and it names these folders the same as your project files' names. Couldn't be easier.
Autosave Vaults, Waveforms, and Thumbnails should be kept on your startup disk in your documents folder. You probably already have one there named "Final Cut Pro Documents" If it's there just select the Documents folder and FCP will put these three folders in the one named "Final Cut Pro Documents".

  • When I export a playlist and then open in excel, do whatever sorting I want, I then save the file and reimport into itunes but not all the songs are there. It appears to be from "comma's" in the song name. Any solutions?

I see songs such as "Monday, Monday" or "Paint It, Black" or even the artist name such as "Fireballs, with Jimmy Gilmer" which have comma's in them, being a problem when I try to do the following:
    1. Export a playlist which contains songs which are all there and play fine, but some have comma's in the title such as listed above.
    2. I then open that file in Excel and bring it in as a Tab-delimited file.  Everything lays out fine, and all the songs are thing (including those with comma's).
    3. I then sort the varoius fields I want (which I can't do in i-tunes because i-tunes won't sort it properly), and resave the file as a newly named file, which is also a .txt file.
    4. I then import that playlist into my itunes. It is exactly the same songs that I just had exported but i-tunes says some of the songs can't be found.
I have traced this problem to comma's in the file name of the song such as listed above.  There must be a solution to this either as the file is opened in excel or in how it's saved or some other solution short of having to rename song/artists without using comma's.
    Thanks.

The additional problem is the file name of the song itself.  Even if I were able to delete the commas or replace with a space for example, changing the file name would result in itunes not being able to find the file.  I would have to go through each file (out of about 15,000+ songs) to find any that have titles such as described in this thread and change not only the song and artist in the fields, but changing the mp3 file itself.
I fear that I am really pretty much going to have to start with a list of songs that have no comma and then do a file compare to find those songs with commas and then just physically moving them into a new playlist I'm trying to create, but this is a royal pain as I want to be able to create a variety of playlists based on these chart dates/peak positions.
I'm trying to sort the songs in this manner:  I use different fields in itunes so that I can put the "peak position" of each song based on Billboard charts, as well as the date the peak position was acheived. I use the "comment box" for that.  I use the "grouping" field for my peak position.
So I end up with something like "10/14/1980" in the comment box as the peak position for a song which is in the grouping field, and so forth.  If I try to sort the comments column in itunes for example, it won't sort properly. If I sort the Grouping field, it will bring up all the "1's", but that's followed by "10", 11, ...19, then "2", etc.  This is why I want to export the playlist and sort it as I want, and then reimport the playlist into itunes.
What I'm ultimately trying to achieve is a year-by-year peak position playlist so that I end up with every #1 song (in this case) from, say, January 1st 1980 and then every #1 song in sequential order for the rest of the year falls in line.  I have chart position dates from 1955 through 1999.  I have entered in all the data from Billboard books I own so I can really create some amazing playlists, but these commas are problematic. Had I known this ahead of time I would have made "Monday, Monday" as "Monday Monday" and not included commas, but it's too late for that.
    Any suggestions?

  • External media files work on one computer but not on another

I have several MOV and MP4 video files that are stored in a specific folder, and some of my presentations display those videos in their slides. Because there are too many video files, they’re not embedded on the presentation, they are (I believe) only linked, or else the presentation file would just get too large.
I usually create the presentations on my home iMac and copy them to my MacBook to take to work. The folders structure is exactly the same on both computers, including the user name.
I upgraded to Keynote 6 (and now to 6.0.1) on both computers (both running on OS Mavericks). When I open on my MacBook a presentation that I created on my iMac, the app says the video files couldn’t be located, and it only displays a still of the video. But the video files are there! The folders are mirrored! This procedure worked fine with version 5.3, but doesn’t work with 6.0.1.
    Any suggestions?

I would suggest you revert to using Keynote version 5 and things will work as they did.
Make sure you use version 5 presentation files as files used with 6 will have been converted to version 6 files.
Once Keynote has been updated and is more mature and reliable, you could start using 6 again.

  • Trimming original media files

I'm working on a project which references lots of huge media files, but only takes a few seconds of footage from each.
Is there a way (as there was in FCP 7) to trim those media files so that they don't take up terabytes of space on my hard drive? (I could just export them from a project, but that will reset the timecode to zero, and I want to preserve the original timestamp on the shortened clip.)
    Any thoughts?

I renamed a disk VIDEO, and I can't get FCP X to recognise it as a camera, no matter what.
Very strange - I've only heard of this once before and I don't know of any remedy. Presumably the disk is correctly formatted (Mac OS Extended)? Does it contain other folders / files?
Yes, correctly formatted, and yes contains lots of other folders and files. I'm guessing that this is the reason FCP X won't recognise it as a camera.
I have another disk which only contains files, and FCP Xalways recognises it as a camera no matter what name I give it.
Are there any folders in the root of the drive which could suggest they contain camera files (DCIM, Video, Movie etc)?
No, nothing on the partition at all except a couple of video files at the root level.

  • How can I move my media files from USB-HD to NAS without having to copy the media files to iTunes Media folder?

I have iTunes on a Mac with the iTunes Media folder stored locally and the music on an external USB-HD. The music files are Not copied to iTunes Media folder when added to the library.
Now I want to move my files from USB-HD to a NAS without losing any information or settings. I want to do the similar to my iPhoto library. I do not want to consolidate my files to iTunes Media folder. The articles I’ve read only discuss how to do if the files are copied to iTunes Media folder when added to the library. Any tips or trix?

I have iTunes on a Mac with the iTunes Media folder stored locally and the music on an external USB-HD. The music files are Not copied to iTunes Media folder when added to the library.
How are you achieving the above? What are your copy setting in preferences? If you are manually overriding the copy-to by holding down the option key while adding media then that won't apply when you import a playlist (as in importing the .xml).  When you import a playlist like that you are essentially adding the files to the library again and it will obey the  preferences setting since you can't option add them that way.
Correct on the .itl.  Only iTunes itself can edit that file.
I think you need to review your basic wants/needs in doing all this.  If your reason for not wanting to use the Media Folder settiing is because you do not want it to go on the internal drive, but you don't actually mind if it organizes it as long as it is on the NAS, change the Media Folder preferences setting to the NAS and let it consolidate to there.  If you want to move the stuff but keep it organized in your own folder structure you may need to do it as I suggested initially.  Once it is on the NAS and iTunes recognize the file locations you can do what you can only do if you manually manage music which is move it around in Finder afterward once it is on the drive and recognized to tweak location to your final wishes.

  • Media files not appearing in SWF file

I have set up a few interactive elements in an InDesign page. Some drop down menus, buttons and such like. I Have also imported a small MP3 audio file and video clip – they aren't large files. Everything works as it should when viewed in the EPUB viewer. However when I export to SWF or an interactive PDF neither the audio or video clip appear –  let alone play. The other slideshows and animations work fine. I have double checked the files and all the settings without success.  I'm up to date with the latest versions of InDesign (2014.2 release) and Acrobat etc
Anyone have a solution or experiencing similar problems – any info gratefully received.

If the media files (both audio and video) do not have a poster image applied, there will not be a visual representation of these files in the exported PDF or SWF. That does mean that the media files aren't in the export, if you click where they are suppose to be, you should be able to activate them. Through the media panel in Indesign, select media, and choose a standard or custom poster.
Edit: although a poster image can be applied to an audio file, this works with PDF export, but during SWF export, the poster still does not display. The workaround for SWF export and audio, create a button with an action to play a sound.

  • Nokia Lumia 1320 does not recognize media files properly

    Hello
I have the following problem with my Nokia Lumia 1320:
media files (either music or video) are not recognized properly and therefore seen in "other" section of Storage.
There has been a discussion here a while ago here:
    https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/042cc9fb-ea9e-444c-98f0-8c1d0930e326/sd-card-problem-with-my-nokia-lumia-1320-unable-to-use-it-properly?forum=winphoneosissues
But my problem is in fact that media files are not recognized even on the phone itself which is very surprising.
I have tried several ways to copy the files over:
    - Win Explorer on Win XP
    - Win Explorer on Win 8
    - special app on Win 8
    with the same result.
Moreover, sometimes the files are not read by the official Music app with the following odd errors:
    - 80070002
    - 80070003
Even more problems occur with the SD Card:
some files fail to be transferred there and disappear after the phone restart. I have tried the ways above to copy these files with no luck.
I have also tried both hard and soft phone reset, formatted SD Card via phone and PCs.
    The problems described still persist.
Does anyone have ideas/ways to fix those problems?
The phone is really nice but it's pretty annoying to meet these problems.
Interestingly, my previous WPs (HTC 7 Trophy and HTC 8X) didn't have a half of the problems described above. Bad luck...
    Details of my phone are:
    - Nokia Lumia 1320
    - OS: 8.10.12393.890
    - Region Set: United Kingdom

  • Corrupted Media Files?

Whenever I try to watch a video that I downloaded, it either plays for about five seconds, then says that there was an error or that the format isn't supported or else it won't start  at all and it flickers between saying it's paused and saying it's playing.  It plays videos fine if they're the movies I'd already recorded, though.
. . . so what's happening with all of that?  Is there a way to fix it?  I'd try and re-install it and hope for the best, but I dont think that I have the discs and cords and such to connect to a computer and reformat.

Hi and Welcome to the Forums!
Yes, all media files are not created equal. I found that simply watching media files that I obtained and did not convert often resulted in bad things -- including rebooting my BB. I have shifted to DLing my media content to my PC and then using DTM/MM to move/convert the media files to my BB. The result has been perfect stability of playback.
    Good luck!

I am using a new PC running Windows 8.1, but media files on my Z10 phone are not visible in BB Link. No problem synchronizing Calendar and Contacts though. The software tries to establish synching relationships but is unsuccesful and eventually sends a message about some connection problem. Unplugging and replugging the device does not work.
