FCP X locks up (not responding)

Twice now on two different projects, once after hours of editing and just today after 30 minutes of editing, FCP X locks up (not responding), spinning beach ball, and I must force close it. When I go to reopen the program and open my project, it is completely BLANK, nothing in it.
I have the lastest upgrade to FCP X and this has happened on both my Mac Pro desktop (Early 2009 with 10 GB of memory and plenty of HD space) as well as on my new Macbook Pro on an external drive.
I HATE that I cannot save the file myself and that APPLE thinks I'm too stupid to do so. YES, I know I can create a whole new project, but that entails saving related files, etc. Just not as simple as a simple SAVE.
Can anyone help me? I am not comfortable starting on a large editing project, unsure if it will lock up and I'll have to start over.

My advice is to learn to use a new Application and get comfortable with it (working reliably) before you even contemplate starting an important project.
FCP X is working very well for a great number of people, but it does have its quirks too.
To be able to help you find out why you are getting crashes, you need to supply a lot more information than you already have - length of projects, what video codec you're working with, Whether your media is optimised, where your media, projects and events are stored - how the HDs are formatted etc etc.
Don't lose heart! It's an awesome application - you just need to see why it's not working well on your system.
Here are some of the most common ways to improve performance (you may have already addressed some of these but it's worth reading them.
FCP X runs very well (not perfectly, by any means) on my 2009 MacPro 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with 16 GB RAM and ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB
First, check the spec of your iMac against the system requirements:
http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/specs/
Particularly your graphics card. If it's listed here, it's not suitable:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4664
If you are getting crashes, there is some conflict on the OS. Create a new (admin) user account on your system and use FCP X from there - if it runs a lot better, there's a conflict and a clean install would be recommended.
Other ways to improve performance:
Create optimised media.
Hide Waveforms at all times when you don't need them (both in Browser and Storyline / Timeline). They take up a lot of processor power.
Create folders in the Project library and put any projects you are not working on currently, in there. (Twirl it closed to hide them).
Move your Projects and Events to an external HD (make sure it's formatted OS Extended - with journaled on or off) and run from there.
The biggest single improvement I saw in performance was when I upgraded the RAM from 8 GB to 16.

  • Mail app locks up (Not Responding)

I have an iMac (Late 2012) running Yosemite (10.10.2).  Has been working flawlessly until recent issues with Mail app freezing with the Spinning Pin-Wheel of Death.  I have to Force Quit, shows Mail (Not Responding).
Mail app has not had any issues until after the Software Update HT204210, installed on February 13. No other hardware/software changes.
Anyone else having similar issue or resolution ?
Spec: iMac Late 2012,  Mac OS 10.10.2, 16 GB Ram, plenty of HD space

I have proven that the problem is being caused by the Software Update HT204210.
I went and purchased new iMac (LOADED) biggest, best iMac I could buy.  New iMac has the most recent versions of softwares and OS, EXCEPT the latest update, Software Update HT204210.
System ran perfectly.  Email was working as designed.  No hangs ups, no errors.
Then the automatic Software Update ran last night (03/02/15) and installed Software Update HT204210.  Now today 03/03/15 the system hangs and Mail stops responding.
APPLE SOFTWARE ENGINEERS -  here it is, viable proof that the Software Update HT204210 is causing this issue.  FIX IT !

  • IPad lock screen not responding or won't shut off

HHow can I get to work

    Hey Bryan,
For most issues when your iPad is not responding, take a look at the article below to go over some troubleshooting options. Start with holding the Sleep/wake button and home button for about 10 seconds or until you see the Apple logo and test to see if it is responding. After that, if you are still having the same issue where your iPad display is not responding or turning off, then you will want to contact Apple Support to assist you further.

  • Safari locking up/not responding

    Hi all,
Safari's behaving very strangely. It opens fine, and I can browse a few pages but after a short time (a minute?) the fans start roaring and Activity Monitor shows Safari is using 100% (or more) of the CPUs. Then, whatever pages I have open will stop responding.
For example, if I have two tabs open, I can't get them to do anything and I can't open any new pages. Note: this is not an internet connection problem - for example, I can't even open the browser interface to my router (not connection-dependent).
I get a spinning wheel and the whole thing has locked up. I can't quit it, and have to use force quit.
I tried the 'sample' command in Activity Monitor but I don't understand the report. There's no crash report to post here, because Safari hasn't actually crashed.
The problem has been recurring all day, with different pages and different numbers of tabs.
Can anyone help me? I'm not sure what to try next.
    Safari 3.2.1
    OS X 10.4.11
    Thanks!

I'm having a similiar problem over the past week or two. But I'm not getting locked up or the spinning beach ball. Safari is kicking my internet offline after a few moments - every time I open Safari. I go a few pages in, and my wireless modem gets messed up. I simply restart the modem, open Firefox or something else, and no problems.

  • Indesign CS3 Locks up (Not Responding) In Windows Vista 64 bit

    Fully updated InDesign CS
Fully Updated Windows Vista 64 bit
90% of the time it locks up right away upon opening any file.  When I create a file from scratch it locks up as I try to save or export as a pdf.  Basically I can't touch anything except for the settings under Edit.
Not sure how to fix it.  I'm a graphic designer, and it's been like this since I reformatted 3 weeks ago, can't accept any projects until I get it up and running again.
Any ideas?  Any advice is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks
    Mike

The subject line says CS3 and the body copy says CS?
Which is it. Note: CS3 is version 5 and CS is version 3.
CS3 is the earliest version supported under Vista.

  • Address Book locks up -- not responding

OK, at wit's end here. Address Book locks up with spinning beachball every time it opens and I need to force quit it. Here's what I've tried after search through these forums:
    Deleted plist file
Deleted all files in Application Support (after backing them up)
    Repaired permissions on disk
    Verified disk
    Reinstalled Address Book
    Resolved all duplicate fonts
At one point in the process, I opened Address Book executable in the app's package and the Terminal gave message that said "Can't ABACQUIREFILELOCK Framework/AddressBook/ABAddressBook.m:2746"
Now it doesn't say that, but "/Applications/Address\ Book.app/Contents/MacOS/Address\ Book; exit"
    No crash logs in Console.
    Happens in every user account.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

I had to do forced powerdown. That tell us anything?
Yes, your Disk is corrupted... the first thing Safe Boot does is try to fix the Disk.
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
Unfortunately, Disk Utility can't fix all that much, and the only other Apple Options are erasing the HD, or installing OSX to a second drive, then using Migration Assistant to move stuff over to the new HD.
You must repair the HD, if Disk Utility or fsck should fail to repair it, your best bet is DiskWarrior from Alsoft, you'll need the CD to boot from if you don't have another boot drive...

  • Suddenly having trouble with LR4.2 ... won't import anything ... program locks up (not responding)

any ideas on how to fix this or what causes it to happen?  I tried uninstalling the program and reinstalling it, also rebooted my computer.
    Thanks!

Only by reading other posts does it appear that it is an issue with catalog handling that ( not yet tested personally ) can be resolved by starting a new catalog. Mine currently takes 30 sec to load the import splash screen then refuses to progress at anything other than a snail pace. Adobe have remained resolutely silent on the topic and stand behind their usual wall of indifference and call backlogs.

  • IPod locked up not responding

My 40 gig iPod stopped responding. It was working fine earlier in the day and suddenly stopped half way through a song. I attempted to shut it off and I could still hear the harddrive spinning. I connected it to my PC and after several attempts, iTunes indicated that the iPod software was corrupted. Next step, I attempted to reset the settings using the Menu & Select Key. After several failed attempts with that, I now get a black/blank screen that comes up. Any suggestions what I can try next to get my iPod back working?

Once I finally got my PC to recognize my iPod, I had to reformat the harddrive on the iPod. Once it was reformatted, I was able to reconnect to iTunes to start to sync my music. iTunes showed it sync'd over 100 songs, but the iPod only had about 10-15 songs on it. Attempted to play the songs on the iPod and it would never finish playing the entire song. iPod would skip/jump to the next song. I would have problems attempting to re-sync the iPod with iTunes again.

  • TS4036 my slide lock is not functioning and making backing my iCloud impossible

i've being finding it difficult using my iPad for the 2 months, cos the slide locking is not responding. its iPad NextGen 16GB.

What do you mean by "slide lock"?  To back up to iCloud you simply connect it to your charger and wifi and lock the screen, which is done by pressing the sleep/wake (on/off) button once so the screen goes dark.

  • After completing my upgrade to Adobe Reader 11.0.10 When I attpemt to use "Tools/File/File Save As" from IE 11 I get a "Adobe Reader is not Responding" and my browser is locked up.

After completing my upgrade to Adobe Reader 11.0.10. when I attempt to save an online PDF to my local drive I receive a blank window where I would expect to see file directory structure to save to.
No local directories are displayed for "Saving To", it is all blank.   When I try to Close (by clicking X)  the "File Save As" box a message pops up on top that says "Adobe Reader is not Responding"  It locks up all of my IE windows, not just the one with the PDF doc.
I then need to go Task Manager and stop the IE task.  All my browser windows are then closed.
That is the only way to recover from the "Adobe Reader is Not Responding" message.
This was not happening in previous versions of Reader.
Tolls/File/File Save As always worked properly.
    I have installed IE 11 (11.0.9600.17690)

  • Firefox is already running but is not responding - Cannot run Firefox on multiple machines with in a network (parent.lock)

Environment - Single File Server & 6 workstations.
I have a single generic user account/profile and log on to all 6 workstations at the same time (1 user, 1 password, 6 workstations).
I need to run firefox on all the workstations with the same user and user profile.
However, as soon as one user opens firefox all the others get the message "Firefox is already running but is not responding" and can not open the browser. No other workstations can open Firefox. I can only run 1 instance of Firefox in this scenario. How can I run it on all 6 with a single user account?
I have been back to the server and deleted the parent.lock file but it is recreated again as soon as someone open a firefox browser and the problem starts al over again.
Please - How can I get a single user with a single profile to run firefox on 6 workstations simultaneously?
    Thank You

hello timfarr, you cannot do that - many essential databases (like bookamrks, passwords etc.) in your profile are not designed to be accessed by different processes at the same time...

  • My "caps lock" key and "P" key do not respond on my 2009 macbook pro unibody

I recently bought a used macbook pro for university. When I bought it the guy who had it before me was running windows 7 on the machine. (why ruin a mac with windows software? I have no idea) I love macs and everything about them so I decided to wipe the hard drive clean and run OSX like any other normal mac user... well now the "caps lock" and "P" keys do not respond at all!!! I've checked my keyboard settings and keyboard and character viewer and its only those keys that do not respond!! Any ideas how I could reset the hardware? (I have a feeling he had to configure the keys to windows software) And yes, I did see the keys work when I bought it!! Does anybody know apples policy on applecare? like what would I need to bring in to redeem it? (I know this computer is warrantied until 2013)

I got the exact same roblem- you can see that, "p" missing in the word problem.
And Caps lock doesn't work either.
A few hours ago, I had problem with Shift keys. They were stuck, I don't know which one but everything would be capatalized and minimizing windows would be very slow. Then the repairman at a Mac Support center (authorized reseller, no Apple stores here) took off the back cover and cleaned a small chord or something and the Shift problem vanished and this one appeared. The guy thinks it's related to keyboard- must be!- and I need to change it. Could there be any other option?
ps: I copied and pasted all the 'p's in this piece.

  • Elements Organizer Not Responding - Locks when gets to "100%"

This is simply unacceptable.  If I understand right, EVERYONE who uses Organizer finds it does not work properly when you have a lot of pictures (I have lots).  It locks as the app starts, while it searches <watched folders> - gets to 100% then "Not responding" error shows.  I can't go in and tell it to stop watching folders, since it is locking.  Ideas anyone, before I return this and get a refund?   And shame on Adobe for allowing this to continue - there is someone who owns this function in the software development group, and they need the opportunity to find new career challenges.

    Which OS? Please refer to:
