FCP7 to Premiere Pro FULL CONVERT

Like many other FCP editors, I'm fully converting to Premiere Pro (PP). This is due, for me personally, FCP still being disgusting behind the times in blu-ray authoring and I have more demand for blu-ray projects now.
I've seen the tutorials on using XML to convert back and forth between the 2 programs, but those only concern sequences in projects.
I'd like to FULLY convert everything to PP. This will include all clips that have been named and organized, though not used in any current projects, and literally try to make mirror copies of the projects.
Also, some clips are several years old and were captured from tape based media in Final Cut Express 4 as HDV 1080i60. These same clips were not converted to pro res when I purchased FCP7 last year. I'd like to have them converted to pro res if that's possible.
Is there a way to perform this? To be able to have all FCP projects become PP projects, without losing the naming structure of the imported clips and also convert every clip to pro res?
Thank you in advance for any and all assistance.

First of all, welcome! We'll try to ease you in...

As far as I'm aware--and I've only done a few FCP -> PPro transfers--you can only bring sequences from FCP across, and not whole projects. That's because, if I'm remembering correctly, that an exported XML is only reflective of a sequence and not of a project. Anything in bins and not used in a sequence would be ignored.
That said, a workaround of sorts would be to create temporary sequences in FCP of all your footage that you want to transfer, and then export those sequences as XML. Not sure if you'll get bins or not, but you should be able to preserve all or at least most of the information you've entered for the clips in PPro.
If you haven't already, definitely download the trial version (fully functioning for 30 days) and do some test runs. I will be totally upfront and tell you that the XML process is not a 100% accurate process, but it's gotten better with each release, and I think it's pretty complete now, as of CS5.5.
Also, some clips are several years old and were captured from tape based media in Final Cut Express 4 as HDV 1080i60. These same clips were not converted to pro res when I purchased FCP7 last year. I'd like to have them converted to pro res if that's possible.
Will you be using PPro on a PC or Mac? If you're staying on the Mac, and you have FCP installed, you'll be able to use your HDV clips directly in PPro without the need for any additional steps. If you're uninstalling FCP, or switching to a PC, Apple HDV is a no-go unless you purchase a third-party decoder like Calibrated{Q} XD Decode. You can thank Apple for that one I have or have been working on a way to losslessly rewrap Apple HDV clips for use in Premiere Pro (going from MOV to MTS), but it's not 100% yet and since I'm on Windows, I don't know how well it would work on the Mac.
Regarding your second point about converting: Premiere Pro doesn't do that. Ever. It's not like FCP where you're usually forced to transcode or rewrap on import. With Premiere Pro, if you can import it, you can edit it. It's got pretty broad support built-in, but you can extend that with the installation of other codecs; simply having QuickTime installed will let you import ProRes, or installing something like the Calibrated XD Decode component will let you deal with things like XDCAM or Apple HDV MOVs that are not natively supported. So again: if you can get the Apple HDV MOVs into Premiere Pro, you're not really going to benefit from converting them (unless you're switching to another platform and don't want to shell out for the decode component).
Hope that answers some questions, and again, if you haven't downloaded the trial, I'd highly recommend taking it for a spin.

  • Audio incorrectly translated in XML from FCP7 to Premiere Pro

    Hi,
I'm sure others are dealing with this also, XMLs from FCP7 to Premiere 6.0.2 not translating audio levels correctly. I'm working on 10 episodes @ 30 min each and the rough cut of approx. 450 to 500 shots, all the audio is faded to -999db!?! Is there a work around for this? Whern I export an XML from the newly created Premiere project and import that into a new Premiere project, there's crazy keyframes all over the place so I really don't know what's going on!
Any advice would be so much appreciated!
    My system -
    Mac pro 4,1 - OS 10.8.3
    Premiere pro 6.0.2
    Drivers up to date...
    Thanks in advance,
    danny

    Hi Kevin,
Yes I have filled out a bug report. I've since learned a 'fixit' though, which is to select all the audio and right-click and choose 'Remove Effects' from the menu and then click 'Volume' from the 'Intrinsic Effects' section and click 'Ok'. This set all volume back to 0db. I'm just moving over to Adobe from many years in FCP (common scenario at the moment...) and as such, still learning all the little tricks etc.
    Cheers,
    danny
EDIT: Obviously if you're importing a rough cut from FCP7 this 'fixit' doesn't work because all audio work will be lost. I've had to set a key frame on each audio clip to maintain all the audio work that had been done... Very frustrating!

  • Open fcp7 in premiere pro?

Way??? or no way? I've tried and it hasn't worked. But maybe someone knows a way to do it????

Note that it's a pretty good conversion, but not always perfect.  Not every effect/transition will carry over.  Might want to re-watch the project after it's converted to make sure it looks as expected.
I had an issue when this feature was first introduced (CS4?) back in the mini-DV days where my timecode slipped by a few seconds on clips in my sequence.  Likely not an issue by now, but something to watch for.

  • Premiere Pro CS6 - video noise in the exported file

    Hi everyone,
Im trying to make the transition from FCP7 to Premiere Pro CS6. I edited my first project with Premiere Pro and exported the sequence. However I noticed that the exported file had more video noise than the original clips.
The material is shot by Canon 5D Mark III and edited natively in the Premiere's timeline. Then they are exported to ProRes 422. After noticing the noise I exported the sequence as "match the sequence settings" and it created the .mpeg file. Same thing, there was noise. I then tried another other formats of that same clip and transcoded the Mark III footage to Xdcam EX 1080p before sending to premiere. Same thing, no matter what I did.
The only way i got the exported file to look the same as original file, was to convert the files before sending to ProRes 422, then edit those files in Premiere in the sequence thats settings are XDCAM EX 1080p and then to export it to ProRes422.
Do you have any thoughts for this. The noise I'm talking about is not a huge amount of noise but definitely noticeable if you look the FULL-HD material.
I really hope there is some setting I missed. Im using Mac pro 2009 and Macbook pro 2011.
    Thanks

    Hi Thomas
Try exporting by enabling "Render at maximum depth" and " Use maximum render quality" in the export dialogue window.

  • Lifting the 12 min clip length limit in Premiere Pro

    Hi everyone,
my client edits long clips in Adobe Premiere Pro CS5. According to his description, after the first 12 min the clips are grayed-out and don't play. I didn;t have a chance to work with long single shots in Adobe Premiere, but the client told me he heard from someone that there's a setting somewhere in the program that allows the display of the longer clips. I would appreciate if someone in the Forum could point me to that setting.
    Thanks in advance,
    Dimitri Vorontzov

Okay, still had no chance to see it with my own eyes because the guy having the problem is out and about with his crew and keeps his office locked in the meantime, but he's still begging for help and gave me some info over the phone. the info is as follows:
    – he's working with .mp4 files in Premiere Pro CS5
    – apparently, Premiere Pro automatically converts five 12-min long files shot as one take into one-hour clip
    – while the project is open, the 1-hour clip plays fine
    – when he leaves the project and re-opens it later again, the first 12 minutes of the 1-hour clip play normally, and the rest of the 48 min are grayed-out and do not play.
    – if he razors off the non-playing 48 minutes to keep the 12-min clip that plays normal, and extends the 12-min clip back to 1 hour length, it becomes the full, normally playing 1-hour clip (until the project is closed)
His question is: are there any settings that can fix/prevent the problem?

  • Which color models do Premiere Pro and After Effects use?

    hello,
I had a problem with a psd-file that I used in Premiere and AE: when I imported the AE-composition with the mentioned psd-file into my Premiere-sequence, where the psd-file was also used, the color of my psd-file looked different. It seemed that the two "instances" of my psd-file did use different color models.
On the Adobe-help-page I found an entry with the following info: "... After Effects works with the RGB (red, green, blue) color model. AdobePremiere Pro, however, works with the YUV color model. When you work with a dynamically linked composition, Adobe Premiere Pro either converts it to YUV or retains the RGB colors, depending on the output format." (http://help.adobe.com/en_US/premierepro/cs/using/WSbaf9cd7d26a2eabf53ab041041081290f-7fe8. html)
BUT: I found another entry in which it says that "... Premiere internally works with  RGB..." (http://help.adobe.com/en_US/premierepro/cs/using/WS6693F22C-C06E-431a-A634-62343C65BA7B.ht ml#WSbaf9cd7d26a2eabf53ab041041081290f-7fbb)
    Can somebody help me?

I believe Premiere Pro will keep the YUV color space on all YUV material (normally only video, still images are usually RGB) for as long as it can, all the way through the pipeline to export.  But there are some things which can force an internal RGB conversion, like the addition of an effect which does not work in the YUV space.  So far as I'm aware, once converted to the RGB space, it will stay there until an export forces a conversion to another color space.
So the PSD should start out as RGB and stay there both in AE and PP, until an export to a YUV format forces a conversion.
The difference you see between the programs may come about because AE is color managed, whereas PP is not.

  • After Effects AND/OR Premiere  Pro CS5 ?

    Hi guys,
I am quite new, I have only done one videoproject and that was in Premiere Pro CS4. Now I got a new machine and have both Premiere Pro CS5 and After Effects. I have started learning AE from some videos and it is quite impressing what you can do there.  So I hope I can use AE to  improve my videos.
My question is, shall I do the project in PPCS5 and then connect to AE for making special effects on clips or shall I do the whole project in After Effects ?
If I choose AE for the project, will I miss some functions from Premiere Pro?
    Many thanks in advance !
    Sven

    Thank you guys!
You put me on track, expecially with the link!
From beginning I am just taking care of  old videos that noone look at because not edited so most of the time just crap.
I want to edit them, try to improve color and sharpness but also add some funny elements so they are more interesting to watch.
I have 30 videos from my daughter, each 1 hour and 8 of my own (really crap) and 8 VHS from a friend. That is just to start with.
Start Adobe Premiere Pro from within After Effects and capture footage for use in After Effects. (See Use Adobe Premiere Pro for capture (Production Premium and Master Collection only).)
Use Adobe Dynamic Link to work with After Effects compositions in Adobe Premiere Pro without first rendering them. A dynamically linked composition appears as a clip in Adobe Premiere Pro.
Use Adobe Dynamic Link to work with Adobe Premiere Pro sequences in After Effects without first rendering them. A dynamically linked sequence appears as a footage item in After Effects.
Start After Effects from within Premiere Pro and create a new composition with settings that match the settings of your Premiere Pro project.
Select a set of clips in Adobe Premiere Pro and convert them to a composition in After Effects. "
So with a testvideo I will start using these 5 different methods so I learn when to use which one!
And I also have 4-5 videolessons to watch.
    Thanks again!
I probably be back soon with more questions!

  • Premiere pro not opening xml files

    Hi Everyone,
We are transitioning from Final Cut Pro 7 into Adobe Premiere Pro CC. I have exported all my FCP projects as XML Files. I saved the XML files to an external harddrive that I am using to import files into PP on a PC. When I imported the XML files into PP, I was not able to access any files at all in the project. After looking online for answers, it occurred to me that I would need to backup all the source files along with the XML files.
I am in the process of identifying those source files and copying them to the external harddrive that i will be using to edit on Adobe Premiere Pro. The previous videographer did a shoddy job of organizing files, and I am noticing that some projects and their related scratch disks are often in different locations (different Harddrives, some on the original Mac harddrive).  In an effort to keep to make our transition to Premiere Pro as painless as possible, I am backing up all NLE related files (render files, capture scratches, source media files, etc) onto one Harddrive. Is this all necessary?
Is there any blog or article online that i can reference on how to transition from FCP7 to Premiere Pro that addresses source material that is spread out on many storage devices?

    Hi Mike,

Not really, Just know that in FCP, you can move media to a single location using the Media Manager. Once media is moved, a FCP XML file will point to that that drive when opened in Premiere Pro.
    Hope that helps,
    Kevin

  • Understanding FCP7 (from a Premiere Pro background) - Need help

    Hello all,
I have spent the better part of the past 5 days doing a couple video edits of projects that I had already completed in Premiere Pro CS4, in an effort to learn Final Cut Pro 7. I have a few observed differences that I am hoping the FCP veterans can help me understand. I am not new at all to video editing but I am neophyte when it comes to FCP7.
As resourceful as I think I am, I cannot find any references to others who have observed these differences which makes me wonder if the issue is mine entirely.
    *Previewing sequences is time consuming*
The same project that I completed in PProCS4 works to simply press play in the canvas to see the preview without needing to render. I am using the same elements in both projects. FCP7 will not attempt to play the preview unless I render (which seems to be taking 30 minutes to an hour for the particular project I am working on).
*Adding graphics or text layers have a two-minute limit in the timeline*
Unless I am prepared to copy/paste the 2:00 clip numerous times in the timeline or know ahead of time to extend the duration in the preview window before adding it to my sequence, I will be out of luck. I don't seem to be able to simply grab the right handle on the clip and extend it out to match the timeline of my full sequence if I so desire.
*Imported clips behave differently in each application*
As you may have read in another thread, I was having troubles with an imported WMV file that works fine in my PProCS4 installation, but required me to use MPEG Streamclip to convert it before I could use it without audio/video sync issues.
Please don't hear me saying one application is better than the other as I fully expect that they each have their place, but I feel like I am struggling unnecessarily with basic functionality in FCP7. I am sure it's a training issue. I am hoping you all can help me better understand.

OK...here's where you are making a very basic mistake. Final Cut Pro is a broadcast format based editing system. Meaning that it deals with video that meet video production standards. DV (720x480), Broadcast SD (720x486), HD (1280x720 and 1920x1080) and 2K and 4K (film) standards. Anything that doesn't fall within those standards aren't really well suited for FCP. So your 1024x768 sequence setting, and file type won't be the best way to test out and learn FCP. Those are computer monitor dimensions.
Premiere might be well suited for what you are currently working on. But if you want to start learning FCP, I suggest waiting until you have a video production based format to work with, and that you capture that footage with FCP, not another NLE.

  • How to send a project from Premiere Pro to be opened on another computer in FCP7?

The crux is I have this project in Premiere Pro CS5.5 which contains the original MOVs and time adjusted movs that I nested and turned into F4Vs, so it contains movs and f4vs with 1 aiff file and I need to send the work to the director(who has FCP7 and works on a Apple computer) so they can key out the green screen and grade it in FCP7. I prefer no to send 1 big file because there are lots of fast flickering cuts so would take alot of time to go through it pretty much frame for frame. So it would be eaier if they could view it as a project file in FCP7 like I can see it in Adobe Premiere Pro. I haven't done this before as you can tell but someone must of tried doing this before so how is it done?
My project settings in Pro are
    Editing mode: DSLR
    Timebase 25.00 frames/second
    FRame size 1920 x 1080 vertical 16:9
Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square Pixels (1.0)
    Display Format: 25fps Timecode
    Sample Rate:48000HZ
    Dispaly Format:Audio Samples
    Video Previews
Preview File Format I-Frmae Only Mpeg
    Codec: Mpeg I-Frame
    Width 1920
    Height 1080
Please help I really appreciate any advice, I've tried converting the f4vs into apple pro res but no video converter or media encoder will let me even if i imort the pro res preset.

Duplicate the project with referenced events onto the external hard drive.

  • New to Premiere Pro - Demo at home, Full version at work. Overlap?

    Hi,
This is my first use of this forum so I will start by saying hello! I will most likely be here a few times picking the collective genius of everone - I've started in my new job as videographer for a major car manufacturer
and have gone from using Final Cut Pro X on my home system to Premiere Pro CS6 and all the other CS6 programmes. I've downloaded the demo/ trial version of CS6 onto my home mac
to accquaint myself with the interface etc so I can begin using my employers full programme at a respectable pace.
I was wondering this, if I may ask - I've an MP4 video I'm trying to convert to WMV and cannot locate the 'Windows Media' setting in the preset/ output type when I try and export from within Premiere Pro OR Media Encoder.
Is this codec/ output option not available as I'm using a trial version? I'm hoping so as it would explain my confusion...
Thanks for any replies, I've been looking all over and googling etc but cannot locate a concise answer to my quandry. I wish to maintain optimum quality for the conversion so I'm not keen on using random conversion programmes that come up in searches online.
For what it's worth, I'm using Mac Pro/ OSX Lion on my home computer. Windows 7 at work.
    Thanks!
    M

I don't have a Mac so did not save a link, but there was a recent (in the past 2-3 weeks?) discussion about this
As I remember, WMV is not an output option on a Mac... unless you buy a plugin to add the option
I do NOT remember the name of the company that sells the plugin

Does it not play at all or cannot you get the audio in the timeline?
Did you copy the entire card to the hdd and then imported the file via the Media Browser?
Did you source patch the audio tracks?

  • Premiere Pro CS3 Capture Question (Firewire to USB Converter)

Does Premiere Pro CS3 support capture through a Firewire to USB Converter?  More specifically, we have one particular PC laptop that does not have a firewire port, only USB 2.0.  So we were thinking of getting a firewire to USB converter.  Will that work for capturing footage from our Mini DV camera?
Camera is Canon XH-A1S HD and a firewire cable will be running from this camera to the firewire to USB converter, then a USB cable will be running out of the converter into the dual core laptop with Windows 7, 4GB RAM, Nvidia 460M video card.
    Thank you!

Might work then again it might not. Have not heared of any positive results. In other words imo its a waste of money.
You need a real firewire connection.

  • Premiere Pro 1.5: Best analog to digital converter for BNC?

Recently I've been looking for an external analog to digital converter (that connects via firewire)that will work with Premiere Pro 1.5 for capturing uncompressed digital video from any source, whether it be BNC composite from a U-Matic to S-VHS via S-Video (either DIN or Y/C BNC) to Betacam SP BNC Component.  It would also be nice if it could import digital sources (i.e. DVCPRO 50/Digital Betacam) as well by SDI.
I've looked at a few by AJA or Blackmagic, but I'm not sure if they would work with Premiere Pro 1.5 on Windows XP SP3.
