FCPX is not fully utilizing CPU.  Slow Rendering.

When rendering in FCPX, I notice in the Activity Monitor that FCPX is only using 38-43% of available CPU and the rest of the CPU muscle is sitting there "idle."  Does any one know how to correct this problem?  This is nonsense.  I should be rendering quickly and right now I am not moving faster than my 3 year old iMac with a 512 MB graphics card.
I've spent a bank roll on a top of the line 2012/13 iMac and external drive setup:
3.4 Ghz i7
32MB RAM
3 TB Fusion internal drive (only running system softward and other applications that are NOT opn when I am runing FCPX)
My FCPX files are on a Pegusus R6 12 TB Thunderbolt drive
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2048 MB graphics card

As far as I know, FCPX uses the GPU for rendering in the timeline now...
Not sure, if it’s of any help...?

Is there a way of getting any more horse power from my computer?  I have invested in this solution as i need to turn around clips very quickly but at the moment the performance is not living up to my expectations.

  • WLS slow while machine not fully utilized

    Hello,
can anybody please help us with pointers on where to look in case of
    the following symptoms:
We have WLS 5.1SP8 on HPUX, jvm 1.2.2.04 connecting to Oracle and
    Informix
The WLS seems to be slow, even when the CPU utilisation is around 50%.
    It never goes to
full 100%. It very much seems like a configuration issue, the question
    just is which one...
The tiers in front and behind also report low cpu utilisation.
    Current config:
max 80 concurrent requests allowed by client.
Oracle database pool 128 (I know it is too large, planning to reduce)
    maxthreads 96
    Weblogic oracle OCI driver
    many thanks in advance
    madis

While I do not agree that, in general, 96 threads is too many (it may or may
not be and this is very dependent on the hardware/OS/JVM/application -- I will
say that I have never used more than about 125 even with applications running
very high transaction rates), I do think that Charlie is on the right track.
A quick test that I always do to help isolate the problem is to drop one of our
example servlets (e.g., SessionServlet) into the server and run the load test
against this. Since it does no backend access and very little CPU work, it
lets you see if your are able to push requests into the server fast enough to
fully utilize the server. Often times, this is where the problem lies and is
much easier to isolate than application/database issues (unless you've built
your code in such a way that you can measure and/or short-circuit pieces of
    functionality).
Once you verify that you are able to push enough requests into the server to
fully utilize it, then I would go back to testing the application (and see if
any application and/or back-end access issues come into play).
    Hope this helps,
    Robert
    Charlie Therit wrote:
The short answer is that even though you have 96 threads configured, you
don't have enough runnable threads to keep the CPU(s) busy (on any tier).
Combined with the fact your WLS appears to be slow, I'd guess that your
requests are likely blocking/queueing instead of being serviced. You need
to get an idea of what your server is doing with the requests. For
example, try obtaining periodic thread dumps of the JVM to see what
    activity is taking place.
In a multi-tier configuration, WLS may not be only place to investigate.
It is possible that you have poor database response time and therefore each
thread is waiting for a response. This seems plausible since you state
that you have 128 connections and therefore each thread could be blocking
on a database response. In that case, you might actually need to increase
the thread count or tune the database so that your time spent waiting is
    reduced.
Since you report that all tiers are underutilized, some serious
investigation is in order. Have you monitored the network traffic?
Perhaps the amount of data being passed between tiers is significant and is
having a congestion effect? Perhaps the database server has a poor disk
layout and is spending considerable time servicing requests? Problems with
network routing between servers? As you can see there are many possible
conditions that could result in the situation you report. I've listed only
    a few possibilities.
    Hope this helps,
    -Charlie

  • Macbook pro slow with 1tb external hard drive not fully utilized

I have a 13" macbook pro (late 2011 model) 8GB ram (1333mhz) and 500gb sata drive. I use photoshop CS6 and Lightroom quite frequently and all my images are stored on a 1tb external seagate drive. The drive is 70% full but the macbook is not able to open folders. The drive does show up in the finder but seems blank though all the files are on it. I do not keep much on my internal hard drive so the computer is not inundated with data in anyway. Please let me know how I can fix this

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
{ diskutil list; echo; diskutil cs list; } | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
If any personal information appears in the output, anonymize before posting, but don’t remove the context.

  • Oc4j not fully utilizing all cpus

We are running some performance testing in anticipation of deploying our application to production.
We are doing quite a lot of XSL transformations in our app -- the user logs in, we use their id to find the proper XML record (about 8k in size) stored in our database, then using the XML record we retrieve two XSLTs also stored in the database (80kb and 24kb). We have a static util XSLHelper class which receives the XML plus the first XSLT as input (Strings) which returns an XML string, then we call the XSLHelper again with that XML plus the other XSLT as input. Finally the resulting string output is HTML which we display to the user.
During our testing, we noticed that one CPU is pegged to 100% while the other is barely used at all. It seems like Oc4j is only spinning the XSLHelper calls off into a single cpu rather than splitting the load across both cpus.
I'm curious if anyone has any experience with this kind of thing and can share how they resolved the issue, so both CPUs were used as desired?
    Thanks.

Just set the number of processes (default islands) for your OC4J to 2. The setting can be found at the server properties of your container in the enterprise manager website.

  • RAM is not fully utilizing in G430

    Hi guys
    yesterday i brought G430 , and i upgraded the RAM to 4gb
after installing windows xp , i checked the RAM size it showing only 2.98 GB
why it is showing this much difference
PS: i didnt install any drivers
    thanks in advance

That must be because your OS is  a 32 bit one.32 bit OSe's donnot have the capacity to use the entire RAM you have put in.They have limitations on how much memory it can "recognize"

  • Motion in FCPX - click lag, hanging, tortuously slow rendering

    Hello Colleagues,
I have 2 iMacs of different generations, both up-to-spec and up-to-date on OS, FCP, and Motion.
I am experiencing very poor performance when using Motion "generator" graphics: lag, hanging, slow renders, and sometimes even crashing.
I have verified folder permissions, verified fonts, eliminated all converted events/libraries from pre-10.1 - pretty much everything except uninstalling, trashing prefs, and reinstalling fresh.
Still, FCP seems to be FIGHTING ITSELF, with iStat showing that more than half of CPU effort is being used by "system" instead of "user" at any given moment (when Motion assets are present and enabled).
The performance is far poorer than it ever was on FCP7 with Motion 4, and it is far worse than FCP10.0.x with Motion 5 (one of my machines was previously used with FCP7, however, the newer one has been FCPX since its unboxing day in early 2013).
Does anyone have any suggestions for the next step in troubleshooting this problem?
    Thanks,
    Eric - CoralVision

Yay it's Luis and Russ! Hello colleagues!
Luis: I tink I posted a link to one of the troublesome assets for you, but I limped through the completion of that project by keeping the inspector closed. I still suffered lots o click-lag, spinny balls, and, at the end, an overnight render, but I got through. This was on a 90minute show choir concert that had about 12x 8 second lower 3rds, and about 3 minutes of full screen titles, rolls, and credits. All of the FCP generator assets were made by me from scratch in Motion5. The current post relates to a similar problem, but on a different machine with different assets. The current complaint is from my slightly older iMac (lower power than the new one but still quite capable when using the former versions of this software), and the generators came from Motion projects which were originally created in Motion4. So unless there is something wrong with my practice in using FCPX generators, something in common across the 4 or 5 projects where I have experienced similar problems, I think that a corrupt template is an unlikely explanation.
Russ: I run my systems stock - that is to say that the only 3rd party plugins I have installed are the Canon EOS and XF plugins I use for ingesting media. I don't have any plugins related to MoGraph, editing, rendering, or memory management. These are custom generators that I am creating, chasing the "template" functionality I used to enjoy between Motion and FCP7. So yes, user generated custom generators - and I have had similar problems with several batches of varying complexity and varying origin.
For now I will just have to adapt, observe, and troubleshoot. I have a sneaky feeling that I am doing something wrong in the way I am setting up the motion projects for publication, but I will surely announce it loudly if I learn anything new.
    Thanks for checking in, fellows!

  • Disc Utility not responding and running slow.

I'm running 10.5.1 on my macbook pro and am having problems with disc utilities. When I open DU, it takes a long time to recognize my HD and external HD's. When it does recognize them and I click on one, nothing happens for about 1 minute or so. Then the HD becomes highlighted and the icon bar disappears.
I searched for problems with DU not working or working slow and found some stuff about SUID, nothing of that nature is happening here. I need to format a new HD and repair disc permissions and I can't get even that far.
    Thanks for any help!

Check the system.log for entries for Disk Utility, DiskManagement, installdb, repair_packages. You can also query the asl database with the Console app. Run the Activity Monitor app and check for stuck processes.

  • When rendering a project, FCPX did not stop at 100% but appeared to keep rendering - when it reached eleven thousand something, I quite FCPX (it allowed me to quit).

When rendering a project, FCPX did not stop at 100% but appeared to keep rendering - when it reached eleven thousand something, I quite FCPX (it allowed me to quit).

The background tasks indicator just kept going and going... 200, 300... 400... 600...800... When I opened the background tasks window, the only process it said was active was rendering.
I clicked on "stop" but it ignored me, kept counting on and on....  1000... 2000,,, 5000 I clicked Pause, it didn't ignore me but still kept counting...  7000... 10,000...
I went to my activity monitor on my mac and from what it said (like, 97% or so idle), I surmised that it actually had stopped rendering.  So I quit FCPX - no problem, no "not responding" or "force quit" or anything.
My external harddrive was still whirring (that's where my project is stored) so with much trepidation I ejected it: no problem...
After my question I (agian with much trepidation) opened FCPX, did some editing, rendered, exported, without problems.
But I'm concerned about what might have caused this bizarre behavior and what to do if it happens again.
    any thoughts???

  • "Activity Monitor" utility does not update the "CPU Time" column in real ti

If I use Activity Monitor to display "All Processes", why doesn't it update the "CPU Time" column in real time? It updates the "% CPU" and others, but not the total "CPU Time". I have all columns viewed if that matters. However if you double click on a process in the Activity Monitor window, the details about the process are displayed in another window (number of threads, ports, CPU Time, Context Switches, Faults, etc), and as long as that detail window exists, the "CPU Time" column is updated in real time in the main Activity Monitor window. Is this a bug or a feature?? Does Leopard do this also? Have lots of free memory so that is not an issue. Thanks...
    -Bob

I noticed the same behavior reported by Bob: Not regarding the "process filter" or the "update frequency" selected "CPU Time" column is only updated when details dialog is open. I noticed it just today (which triggered the search here), I wonder if this "feature" has been always present or maybe activity monitor is getting lazy?

  • After Effects CC 2014 only using 30% of CPU when rendering

I've scoured the internet for details but there's surprisingly little help when it comes to After Effects and performance.
Basically, I built a new workstation awhile ago with the hopes of really speeding up my video editing as I was starting to do a lot more. Here are the specs:
    Core i7-4930k
    32 GB RAM @ 1600MHz
    Stock GeForce 780
Samsung 840 EVO 500GB OS drive
Crucial 240 GB SSD for Scratch Disk
3TB WD Red for Mass Storage
    Windows 8.1
I must say that I've been quite disappointed so far with the setup when it comes to the CPU, especially After Effects. I would think the 6 core would greatly outperform my old 4 core, but I've found hardly any performance improvements, and in fact have seen it perform worse in a number of situations. And I think the issue is that somehow, After Effects is not fully using the CPU. Whenever rendering or previewing, all 6 physical cores as well as the 6 logical cores hover around 30% usage. Never any more. And yet, the comp it's rendering could be chugging away at maybe 2-3 frames per second, and it could clearly go faster with more CPU usage. Heat isn't throttling anything as all the cores are still at a very cool 48-50 C, and this is just pretty basic air cooling. It's definitely not being pushed that much.
I don't think it's the CPU itself as Maya gladly takes up as much CPU as possible and my render times on that have improved dramatically. After Effects however (and Premiere when not using GPU effects) can be quite slow. It's especially frustrating when other older, clearly slower computers end up rendering my comps faster.
Is there any info at all out there as to why this is? Any advice on troubleshooting? I've tried many things and can't think of anything short of maybe it being an OS issue and having to reformat (which would be quite a pain).
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Martin, I don't know if there's anything Todd or I can say to change your opinions. We try to represent how After Effects works, and why the After Effects team chose to make it work that way, in a way that all users can understand so you can get back to creative work as fast as possible.
What tends to rub us the wrong way are your assertions and accusations about that. For example:
If you guys spent less time listening to the voices you want to hear, and more time on the 'yes some time difficult to hear' but nether the less valid concerns of experienced users, you would have addressed this fundermental flaw years ago.
We gave constructive feedback whilst part of that program and none of it was ever addressed. There seemed to be a weird attitude to any criticism which didn't fit the given narrative.
I'm sure you probably see it differently and it is great to hear it is being addressed.
That last statement is quite true, your perspective is your own. From our perspective, your statements do not reflect how the After Effects team interacts with After Effects users, either the users in our prerelease program or users who are not a part of that program. Fact is that we spend a lot of time talking with users: in forums, at user groups, on the phone, via email, and by visiting work sites. We take notes and discuss as a group what we learned, and use that feedback to guide the future development of After Effects. It's not all sunshine and roses, we hear plenty of negative things about After Effects. This is important as it helps us understand how to make After Effects better. At the same time, we're also cognizant that we have many different types of users with different needs and workflows, and we can't make all users happy all of the time.
What I think is not visible to you, or to most After Effects users, is how we prioritize the development of After Effects. There are many factors that go into that, starting with input from users but also including (in no particular order) fixing bugs and general improvements, industry trends, changes in hardware and software environments, maintaining a large and complex codebase (some of which is shared with other Adobe applications), maintaining interoperability with other applications (both Adobe and non-Adobe), and ultimately delivering a product that people want to use. To see how all that comes together is harder to communicate; really, you would need to sit down with us and watch us work.
The more relevant point here, Martin, is that you appear to disagree with how much priority we've given to performance improvements in After Effects. You indicate that you would prefer that we had started on this work a long time ago.
All work we do in After Effects comes at the cost of work we don't do. I'm confident that you're like me in that you have a long list of enhancements, beyond performance, that you'd like to see in After Effects. But the After Effects team is relatively small for such a complex application, and the scope of the performance-related improvements we are currently making is huge, a massive re-wiring of the application. Doing this work in a reasonable amount of time, with the number of people that we have, with as few moving parts as possible, is tricky. In that context I hope you can see that it has not been easy for us to justify putting the entire team on this effort and doing no other work, no creative features, no workflow improvements, no fixing of long-standing bugs and gotchas, etc. What is important is that this work is now in progress.
On that note, I need to temper any expectations that you may be building based on this conversation. We're laying the groundwork for the future of After Effects, and the first iteration of performance improvements that you see next year might not meet your expectations if we hype it up too much. We plan to share specific detail when we get closer to a public release, but suffice that what we are doing now is absolutely necessary for even better things to come later.
We understand your frustrations, that you'd like After Effects to be faster. We're working on it, and we appreciate your patience. We also appreciate constructive comments and questions.

  • Slow Rendering

Is anyone else experiencing slow rendering since updating?  I am looking at my activity monitor and it's not hardly using any ram while rendering.  This is absolutely frustrating!

Unless you're dealing with large format still images rendering doesn't use RAM it uses the CPU and in some instances the GPU.

    Bruce,
Sorry, I forgot to mention that the WSDL was generated by querying the URL
of the deployed webservice. If there is something missing from the WSDL,
it may be due to servicegen, or a problem with deployement. All of this
used to work in WLS 7.0 sp1.
I submitted this case (459937) to BEA Support on 11/12/03 and have given
them my EJB jar file so they can reproduce the problem using servicegen.
I would appreciate any input you can provide to resolve this problem, but
you can let Support handle it from here if you wish.
    Thanks,
    Tony

    Hi Tony,
Could you clarify your starting point; i.e. do you begin with WSDL or
    from java?
In looking at your WSDL, on the surface I'm concerned that the imports
should be something like <xsd:import namespace="..."
schemaLocation="myschema.xsd"/> so it may not be including your
    definitions.
    Thanks,
    Bruce

I have datatypes that extend classes in a different package. When I
use WLS81 ANT task clientgen to generate client-jars from WSDL files
obtained from web services generated by servicegen, the superclasses
are not fully qualified in the generated java code, nor are there
import statements for the superclasses. This causes the generated
code to have compile errors. Other dependencies are fully qualified in
the generated code, but the superclass is not.
There mayThe WSDL is included below. Specifically,
com.starcomsoft.pp.database.BaseHelper does not get a fully qualifed
reference in the generated java code.

  • HP Photosmart Premium All-In-One driver software will not fully install

After downloading and installing the full version of the printer driver (both from on-line site AND from purchased driver CD), the software appears to download fine, but will not fully install.  I have run Print and Scan Doctor and tried on-line support, uninstalling, reinstalling the drivers and have tried on-line HP support.  My new computer (HP Envy 715 xt) is less than 3 weeks old.  I am running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit.  The printer/scanner/copier/fax worked fine on my old computer which ran Windows XP.  I have tried everything - HP on-line support will not speak to me without charging me, even though my computer is brand new - they insist the problem is with the printer, which is out of warranty.

    Hello Deb!
I would recommend performing an L3 uninstall, and reinstalling.
I am listing the L3 uninstall steps below:
    -Launch your temp folder
    -Go to the 7z folder
    -Go to the util\CCC folder
    -Launch the uninstall_L3.bat file
Please let me know the results!

  • Windows 8.1 Pro - Flash Pro: Menu's and window selection panes do not fully render, or are misaligned. Same with the stage

This bug makes the program virtually unusable for anyone using Windows 8.1.  I have a dual screen setup : 1920 x 1200 and 1920 x 1080 on the other, AMD Radeon HD 5700 Series drivers (Latest versions), running on a Windows 8.1 Pro OS.  When you attempt to view the various menu option panes, the windows themselves are not rendering fully, or you are hidden.  Also the stage is shifted as well to the lower right, making the program almost unusable. I have tested this on a Mac, as well as on a windows 7 machine and this does not occur there.  So it appears to be only within a Windows 8.1 Pro machine.   I have attached screen shots of what I am seeing.  Notice in the first image, we are looking at the new document pane. You cannot see the options fully and they are shifted to the right out of view.  The next image shows both the stage, shifted right, as well as the Document Pane.  The options are not fully visible, and clipped off.  The window itself is not re-sizable.  I have cleared the appdata, and re-installed the program. Same result.  I attempted to troubleshoot this via chat, however your network kept losing connection. Please let me know if anyone is suffering from this, and any resolution. Thanks!

Thank you sir!  The scaling was the issue, and the solution.  By clicking on settings->Screen Resolution-> Text and Font link ->  It was defaulted to 125%. For anyone else who has this issue, set it to 100% and it will resolve these issues.
    Thanks again! Back to development
