Feature Request: Apply effects to group of clip instances

I have been trying to supply this feature request into the Adobe feedback form. But it appeared that it was too large to be posted in a single feedback form. So I had to split it into three distinct feedback forms.
I don't want this feature request to get lost just because those three parts can't be joined back into a single feature request again. So I'd like to post it here, requesting for comments, too...
This feature request is about applying effects to more than one clip:
a)
Currently, when selecting more than one clip, it's not possible to change any effects settings. The Effects Settings windows only shows a "Multiple clips selected" message.
Thus, I'd like to suggest the following:
When selecting more than one clip, the Effects Settings window should display any effects that apply to all the selected clips. Moreover, only those effect parameter values should be displayed having the same value across all selected effects. This on the other hand, of course, can only be displayed for effect parameters not having key frames/timing activated.
Editing any of the displayed effects' parameters should apply the new value to each currently selected clip instance.
b)
Then again, when using key frame/timing activated effect parameters, it is currently not possible to apply such effect to more than a clip, too. To apply such animated effects to more than one clip it is currently necessary to nest those clips into a separate sequence.
Thus, I'd like to suggest the following improvement:
It should be possible to apply effects not only to clips but also to a group of clips (Menu Clip > Group).
Activating animation/key framing to any of the effect settings of those effects being assigned to a clip group (in contrast to those effects assigned to any clip instance contained in the the group) will allow to add key frames spanning all clips of the group.
This way it will be possible to easily create, e.g., a zoom effect spanning several clips.
If there are clips in-between those belonging to the group, the group's effects won't be applied to those clips not belonging to the group. However, the effects' parameter values are continued to be calculated in the background.
So this example would be true:
- Available clips:
| a | b | c | d | e |
- Clips grouped into a Clip Group:
| a |   | c |   | e |
- Zoom video effect applied to the group, having two key frames added:
Key frame #1 = beginning of clip | a |
Key frame #2 = end of clip | e |
Zoom value of key frame #1 = 100%
Zoom value of key frame #2 = 400%
--> So this will be the approximated calculated zoom value when the timeline reaches following points in time:
Beginning of clip | a |:     100%
End of clip       | a |:     132%
Beginning of clip | b |: (100%)
End of clip       | b |: (100%)
Beginning of clip | c |:     174%
End of clip       | c |:     230%
Beginning of clip | d |: (100%)
End of clip       | d |: (100%)
Beginning of clip | e |:     303%
End of clip       | e |:     400%
(Unfortunately, this forum doesn't allow me to apply any kind of formatting to the example above. So I can't apply a monospace font or colouring )
When a group gets ungrouped (Menu Clip > Ungroup), effects that had been applied to the group will be assigned to each individual clip of the group. For effect parameters that had key frames/animation activated, key frames will be created at the beginning and end of each of the clips. The previously calculated values will now be inserted at each automatically created key frame to mimic the grouped effect behaviour. This operation then would finalize the Ungroup operation involving clip group effects.

Axel Dahmen

You could combine the Next/Previous Edit commands with either the Apply Video Transition shortcut or with a paste command if you had copied the transition you want.
OR... much easier if all you want is a bunch of consistent fade ins/fade outs...
On a single clip, keyframe opacity to create a fade in from the in point of the clip at the duration you like, e.g. 30 frames. Right click Opacity, and select Save Preset; give it a name, e.g. Fade In 30 Frames and set it to Anchor to In Point. Reset the effect and delete the keyframes, and then repeat this to create a fade out. Go to the out point of the clip, set keyframes, and once again, right-click Opacity and Save Preset; this time call it something like Fade Out 30 Frames and set it to Anchor to Out Point.
Now, you can simply select all of your clips in the sequence, and apply these presets by dragging them to the selection. Even though you created two presets, because you can only have one instance of Opacity on a clip, the keyframes from both presets will be added to that single effect. You have to do this with two presets--if you do it with one and use Scale, the keyframes will stretch out or compress to maintain a relative duration instead of an absolute duration.

  • FEATURE REQUEST: After Effects style Placeholders and Proxies

If you feel the needs in efficient proxy workflow, welcome to the club and don't hesitate to submit feature request.
Here is the adjusted to less than 2000 symbols feature request text:
***After Effects style Placeholders and Proxies***
It would be nice if PrPro offered AE style Placeholders and Proxies workflow. There are cases, where they are extremely useful, e.g.:
    1. Huge modern formats and resource hungry codecs. Not all machines can easily handle 2k or 4k footages, some can't get real time playback even with AVCHD. Not to mention that CinemaDNG importer was discontinued partly because of inability to get real time playback in PrPro. The issue can be resolved via rendering previews, but that's not always the most efficient workflow.
    2. In multicam editing issues mentioned above increase dramatically. Rendering preview for every camera angle is simply impossible. Although PrPro offers offline clips workflow, an editor can't easily see if the clip is currently linked to a source footage or a proxy, and switching between sources and proxies involves several steps every time one needs to switch: selecting assets, making them offline, right-clicking again to link to other media, locating files on a disk; while in After Effects it's just one click once a proxy is set.
    3. Adobe Dynamic Link. PrPro communicates with AE projects via single instance of headless AE, which creates a bottleneck and entails the need to render DI for complex comps. Although AE allows to set DIs as proxies and, hence, enjoy the best of both worlds, instantly switching between DI and dynamically linked comp and no needs to replace anything in PrPro timeline, with hundreds of dynamically linked comps PrPro timeline becomes unresponsive and takes forever to render (for my rig test 30 min sequence built out of 935 dynamically linked comps, which are just source footages in their own comps, hence, the equivalent to rendered DIs set to proxies, takes around 27 hours to render, while 30 min sequence built out of the same 935 source footages renders in real time). Meanwhile, PrPro doesn't currently allow to link offline dynamically linked comps to rendered DIs.

As the person who maintains the feature request database for After Effects, I can confirm that the number of times an item has been requested is a major factor when we consider what to work on next. So are other factors, such as how hard the feature is to implement and maintain, how much testing is involved (often the larger concern than programming time), whether the request conflicts with something else that we are already working on, and so on. It is true that we consider not just raw numbers of requests but the details of who is making the requests---e.g., whether the requests are coming from animators or compositors, beginners or experts.
I can only speak for the After Effects team, but the Premiere Pro team works much the same way (which is unsurprising, since we are in the same group and have overlapping team members).
We also try to give some visibility into the most requested items with posts like this:

Irregardless of the Premiere Elements version...
I do not believe you are doing anything wrong. I have not found it possible to copy a Timeline clip to which Time Remapping has been applied and use Paste Effects and Adjustments to other selected clips on the Timeline to achieve the same fast or slow motion for more than one clip at a time. For one thing the duration of the Time Remapped clip is different than those that have not gone through Time Remapping.
And, you cannot select more than 1 clip at a time to be taken into the Time Remapping workspace.
Also, special considerations need to exist for Pan and Zoom Tool for its pan and zoom effect applied to more than one photo at a time.

I will think about this some more. But, at this moment, it appear to be it is what it is.

  • Feature Request / After Effects

Feature Request from Advanced Level User.
    1. Copy and Paste Comp settings to Other Selected Comps
We are creating Motor Shows for major Automotive clients and often need to resize animated stings etc. in various different formats and clients often change things whenever they like.
When a client says could you change the resolution of that master render or the framerate then it would be great if you could copy composition settings and apply them to all the nested compositions that you choose. This should be similar to copying footage interpretation and pasting the info to a selection of video assets.
To elaborate, take the scenario where you have a file rendered at 1024x768 @ 30fps. The client says please make it PAL 720x576. Simple: you just put the master output into another comp and scale down to the new size. The 25fps would be reducing frames so that should be fine also. Now the client says they need a 1280x720p @ 50fps version that they forgot to tell you about. Now you could put the 1024x768 comp into the new 720p size and crop top and bottom. But you would have to scale UP the width from 1024 to 1280. Increasing the framerate would only work if you switched on collapse transformation in all of the nested comps, lets assume there are 50 of these due to the nature of this streamlined composite. Collapse Trans. or Grow Bounds is of course an option but not always relevant. Often the only way is to trawl though a chain of Nested comps and manually change size, framerate etc. The process of neatly nesting and working at the highest resolution needed is good practice. But often clients do not tell you about that 'big' version they need too, so speaking in hindsight is of little use. It happens often.
If you could simply change the size of the master output comp and then copy it's settings, select all the nested comps in the Project Window and then paste the settings into all the nested comps you would have saved a lot of time.
    Shari.

    Dear Steve,
Thank you for that superb feedback. It was a great place to start and eventually I arrived at a script called selected_comps_changer.jsx by Chris Green.
If anyone else needs it then it is here:
    http://www.crgreen.com/aescripts/actual_scripts/Selected_Comps_Changer.jsx
It does exactly what it says on the box.
    Many thanks again,
    Shari.

  • Applying effect to multiple master clips in bin

Basically I would like to apply the timecode reader effect to multiple master clips in a bin so that I can batch export those clips to an external drive for the director to take and watch at home.
I know how to apply an effect to multiple clips in a timeline, but is there a way to do it right to multiple master clips in a bin?
Right now my process is to duplicate the clips for a scene as new master clips in a separate bin, one by one apply the timecode reader (as favorite effect) to each clip, then batch export those clips to the external drive.
As I get to the scenes with many many clips, applying the effect gets a bit tedious. Just hoping there's a faster way I'm not thinking of or unaware of.
    Thanks.

It always seems like a strange thing to do, but the standard for these kinds of things seems to be to put everything on the timeline, apply the effects (you know how), and then drag them off the timeline into a fresh bin.
It's very quick and does the job just fine, but always somehow feels.. wrong.
If there were a way for a timecode reader to be applied by Compressor, then it would be much more of a batch thing. But I don't think there is.

  • Feature request: Frames Per Second info for clips / Warning when exporting

I know that this may not be the right place to post, but I think many of us users would agree that this feature would be useful in iMovie. Especially for new users who are not even familiar with terms like "frame rate".
Let's assume you import a video from your digital camera. You are not an expert in this field, so you edit the video in iMovie. Then you export it using QuickTime. The final video is jerky... and this can be due to incorrect frame rate settings.
It would be nice if iMovie provided some warning if you are trying to import video at a different frame rate setting than your original video source. Just a pop-up saying "Your video was recorded 29.97 frames per second (FPS) and you are trying to export it into 25 FPS. This can cause some playback issues."
Maybe even suggest the correct frame rate setting for the export. Apple's software is always trying to make things easier. I think regular users do not even know about "frame rates", so it might be a good idea to warn them.
Also, how can you tell what FPS are your sources in iMovie? There is no way to tell what FPS was the clip recorded in. To find out, you have to go back into iPhoto, then drag the clip into QuickTime and only there you can select "Get Info" and find the recorded FPS for the specific clip.
This seems like a lot of trouble to go through, just to find out a very basic information about the clip.
I would like to see some functionality like this added to iMovie. I think many of us users would welcome this feature.
    What do you guys think?

  • How do I apply effects to groups?

    Thanks

  • Applying Effects: Dragging the Only Way?

Is dragging the only way to apply effects / presets to a clip?
Are there no keyboard methods / shortcuts to do this?

As Harm says, there is only one, the Default Transition (that can be changed).
The closest that one can come to semi-automation would be to drag any/all Effects to, say the first Clip, and make any settings changes there. When you are satisfied with the Effects and their settings, Rt-click on it an choose Copy. Select all other Clips to which you would want the same Effects and settings applied (Lasso'ing them will work in most cases) and once Selected, Rt-click on these, choosing Paste Attributes. Done.
Consider the number of Effects that ship with PrPro, plus the common ones that folk add. There are no enough possible key combos to cover half of them, even if you remapped everything to just Effects. Unfortunately, PrPro (unlike PS) does not do scripting.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Can't disable new feature "collectively trim and fade grouped clips"

If somebody knows how to either disable this new functionality or override it with a keystroke please let me know.
This new feature is great, except for that I can't trim grouped clips in multi-track view the old way (from version 2.0). You used to be able to adjust the boundary of a single clip in a group - now it adjusts the boundary of all clips in that group.
    This is a deal-breaker for me. :(

    Incidentally:
    >on a more generic note, I'm seeing changes like this more and more in the software industry. Developers haven't got a clue how people use their software. When it comes time for V.Next they seem to rather enjoy removing functionality just because they themselves don't use it.
Adobe have very much been caught out by this in the past - which is why features that have been removed from Audition (eg the play list, and the whatever it was phase-shift function) have been put back, pretty much entirely due to end-user pressure. During development cycles, it's impossible to consult all of the end-users, although there are a couple of ways in which anybody can have a say - one is in the 'feature requests' forums, both here and at AudioMasters, and occasionally there's also the odd thread about specifics, which the developers also get to see.
One of my own pet peeves about this isn't so much the features that get altered (I can cope with that), but the lack of pre-settable options available. There are lots that could easily be there, like the amount of dBs of 'dip' in the centre of stereo panning, and an option to have the 'Solo' buttons working correctly by default (which they don't at present, IMO). Generally it's a lot of these little things that make the difference, often more so than the big ones. People like to have software set up for their own particular convenience, and Adobe should take a
careful note of that - I think it's more significant than they might realise.

  • How do I apply a transition to a group of clips?

    Hi,
I want to apply a transition to a group of clips. I know how to select a group of clips, but I have not found how to apply the same transition on all of them. Can this be done in FCE?

let:s say I want to apply the default transition to the group, how do I do it?
Place the playhead at the start point in the Timeline.
Select a group of clips that are contiguous.
Drag them to the Canvas Overlay, Overwrite with Transition.
Note: Media Handles must be available or you will get a warning message.
And do I understand wright that I could also do it with a unique transition that I would place it in my >Favorites Bin? How would I do that?
A Favorite works differently. There's no way to alter the Default transition in FCE. The Default is always a one second dissolve.
To make a Favorite you can open an existing transition in the Timeline by double clicking it or just open a transition into the Viewer directly from the Browser. Existing is best as you can setup to see any changes in the Canvas.
It opens in the Viewer with the controls showing.
Placing the Playhead over the transition in the Timeline will give you immediate feedback of the changes in the Canvas.
Make any adjustments like timing, angle, color etc.
Look for a small hand icon at the top right of the Viewer.
Click and drag this to the Favorites Bin.
You will now see the new transition available for use with any new values.
This Favorite can now be used as a transition in the usual way.
There is no way to add the Favorite to more than one clip at a time.

  • Feature Request: Adobe, please make After effects CC keyboard shortcuts customizable as in Premiere

I'm making this feature requests because I've tried the only two known methods for customizing keyboard shortcuts in After Affects and neither of these work in CC:
    • 2008 video tutorial on Creative Cow Forum for modifying the After Effects Keyboard shortcuts text file - unfortunately this doesn't work in AE CC
    • a youtube tutorial about how to install KeyedUp for After Effects - tried this but also not able to change any shortcuts in AE CC
One of the things I love most about Premiere Pro CC is how many keyboard shortcuts you can customize. You can even do this in Adobe Audition.
So why not in After Effects?
Adobe please bring this feature to the next update of After Effects CC.

    Hi Todd,
Sorry I replied to you in the Creative Cow forum. Just in case you didn't see my reply there, I'm reposting it here:
Essentially after following the tutorial video very carefully, modifying the shortcuts, making sure there are no traces of other instances of the old shortcut, I save the file then when I reopen AE, I get this window:
Then when I check the folder housing the shortcuts text file I see that my modified shortcut text file simply got renamed "old" at the end of the line:
See second line in window "Shortcuts.txt.old" -> that's the file I modified. It looks like AE simply spawned a new default shortcuts file titled "...Shortcuts.txt"

  • Feature request: Connect a clip in between other clips shortcut

One of the things that slows me down the most when editing in FCPX is the ability to connect a clip and have it go where I want it vertically in the timeline (above or below other connected clips in the timeline). It would be GREAT to be able to just hover the mouse pointer in the space in between two clips in the timeline and then hit a shortcut key (similar to Q) a "Connect Between Clips" shortcut key to connect a clip and have it go into that space.
If you feel this feature request would benefit you as well please submit a feature request to Apple.
    Thank you!

The photos didn't upload so here they are again.

  • Top feature requests for After Effects in 2012

Here's an article that I just posted about the top feature requests for After Effects made in 2012.
Please do make sure that you submit any feature requests here. Feature requests buried in a forum thread can get lost, but feature requests made here will certainly be tracked and retained.

I can't give a definitive answer regarding what we will or won't deliver in a specific future version of After Effects.
I think that buying Test Gear is a good idea, but that's just my personal opinion.

  • Applying effects to multiple clips or an entire sequence on a separate video track

I'm looking for an easy way to apply effects on a separate video track.  In AVID I would just drag and drop the effect preset onto a blank layer.  Or if I wanted the clip to affect just a few clips, I would add two edits (similar to razor blade) on a separate video track and drag the effect preset between those edit points.  Is there a way to do this in Premiere Pro?  Running CS 5.0.4.  Thanks for the help!

Well, depending on what you want to do, you might actually be able to use a clip instance of one sort or another.
One option is Transparent Video (File > New > Transparent Video); by itself, Trans. Video doesn't do anything, but some effects can be applied to it and will generate an output. This doesn't work with all effects, so you'll have to experiment. Check here for more: Create a transparent video clip
Another option would be to use a Color Matte (File > New > Color Matte) or Black Video (File > New > Black Video) clip. These do have an effect by themselves, so you could apply any effect you wanted to them, and then possibly use a Blending Mode to apply it. Black Video is common for this purpose, with something like the Add mode. Again, not perfect, but it will depend on the effect you're trying to achieve.
Unfortunately, we don't have anything like AE's adjustment layers in Premiere Pro. That would solve your problem, quickly.

  • Applying effects erases clip

When I apply some of the effects to a selected clip, the clip goes black and is erased. I'd been doing everything the same as always when this started happening out of nowhere. I've tried downloading imovie HD6 again but it's doing the same thing. Any advice?

    Thanks for your questions:
I'd say 90% of the clips. I imported them from a miniDV tape. All original. My computer is nearly brand new with 2.8 GHz processor, 4MB cache, 4GB Memory and 448 GB available (according to "about this mac")
I haven't found rhyme or reason for those that cut to "all black" other than they all have the letterbox fx. The clip starts fine, then cuts to all black.
This has also happened in other projects I've done. Ken Burns was one of the other effects. I dare not add any other video fx for fear I'll kill the clips that are still hanging in there.
As for work-around, I am just not dumping my trash now. I am not closing the app at all. I am praying I can at least get this project in some form for export.
Where is the logical, systematic, simple explanation for why iMovie does this or how I can just get through this darn project with a cohesive finished result without opening it and finding several clips are now black. iMovie 06 has been around long enough - they should have an answer to this by now.
"Nothing Works" unless I want to test each and every setting, mouse click, nose pick, action and in what order. The "two things" tried include removing library files and repairing permissions a few times, converting each and every clip back to original (more than 75 clips), saving, reapplying effect, rerendering and resaving each clip.
Isn't that enough? I'm just a lowly consumer looking to piece together a little video of clips. I just want it to work.
And it is a "waste of time" as it has now taken me 4x longer to burn this dang thing than it should. I'm just bitter at this point.
